How can i get the highest possible Internet speed/dl speed?

Q. I have wlan connection with a nominal transfer rate of 54 MBit/s. Internetfrog etc. say that my dl speed is abt. 1.8 MBit/s. How can i get the most out of my connection? Or else, what do i have to change to get the highest possible speed? Thanks for any response!

A. go to speedtest.net get an accurate speed - and then make sure all your phone extensions have line filters - there is no large amounts of excess cable and make sure all connections are secure, also make sure there is no interference from microwaves other wifi networks or wireless baby monitors

A. There are two different frequencies. The 2.4GHZ and the more modern less well supported 5GHZ.

In many built aup areas where there are a lot of wifi enabled computers using the more widely supported 2.4GHZ frequency you can get signal problems, also cross over interference from other wifi devices that use the same frequency range, eg baby monitors.
Some, but not all, of the latest IEEE 802.11n capable routers can use both frequencies simultaneously and as the 5GHZ frequency is less crowded, a better signal can be acheived.
2.4GHZ does have a longer range though.

A. I think that you are asking in relation to cordless phones... In which case, there are NO 6.0Ghz cordless phones... there is however DECT 6.0 phones, which operate in the 1.9Ghz range...

When it comes to radio frequencies, the lower the frequency, the further the range, as long as all other factors remain the same. 900Mhz phones would in theory have the best range, however, they operate at lower transmitting power then other cordless phones.

From best (range, battery life, etc) to worse:

DECT 1.9Ghz - best range, least interference, unlicensed radio spectrum dedicated strictly for cordless telephones.

2.4 Ghz - next best range, however this unlicensed radio spectrum is crowded with wifi, wireless video cameras, and various other wireless consumer devices, and therefore subject to increased interference.

5.8Ghz - unlicensed radio spectrum, not as crowded as 2.4Ghz but also may contain other consumer electronics. range is limited compared to 2.4Ghz and DECT phones.

900Mhz - no security, can be listened in on any radio scanner ("police scanner") unless equipped with DSS. least range of all currently available cordless phones. Many consumer electronics such as baby monitors, and wireless intercom and doorbell systems, and garage door openers operate within this frequency range.

1st Gen cordless phones (aprox 48Mhz) - poorest range, no security, can be listened in on with a radio scanner, also shares unlicensed frequencies with baby monitors. Limited frequencies. No longer commercially available, however some (very few) of these phones are still in use.

How can i make my wireless router faster?

Q. I have a sitecom 300n wl 368. For some reason it hovers between 14-20 mbps on wireless whilst i have a wired speed of around 90mbps. The computers/laptops all have wireless N adapters.
Any help would be appreciated.

A. Your data rate will vary. 802.11n takes into account signal strength, quality, number of spatial stream in use and a few other things to determine the data rate.

Signal strength is effected by several things. Make sure the router is placed in a location that will provide the best overall coverage of your living area. If you put it one corner of your domicile, then the opposite corner will have a weaker signal. The more stuff between the route and your device will effect the strength and quality of the signal as well. If possible have the wireless router 6-8 inches away from the nearest wall (at least) and keep other objects at least 6-8 inches away as well (I recommend at least a foot). This will minimize things like signal scattering, reflections, and absorption.

Interference is the next big thing to look for. If you are using 2.4 GHz (most are) there are a lot of things that may interfere, which will cause packet loss and decreased signal quality. Microwaves, cordless phones, and baby monitors all operate in the 2.4 GHz space. Other wireless routers in your vicinity will also cause interference if they are on the same channel. You can use software like netstumbler or Xirrus WiFi Inspector to see all the wireless routers in your area and they channels they are on. Use an unused channel (either 1, 6, or 11) that isn't in use. The channel needs to be 5 channels away from the nearest channel (if possible). So if someone is on channel 2 you should be on channel 7 at the minimum (but should use 11 by convention). If all are in use, use a channel that has the weakest signal and least used. If your devices support it you might also try 5 GHz.

I have a Belkin 802 11g Wireless Card in the other PC. It is this PC that keeps loosing connection.
I have done a number of things to try to stop this from happening - from enabling to disenabling Windows to find a connection; disenabling and enabling windows zero wireless configuration.
Getting fed up now!

I have one laptop computer that won't pick up a signal, or gets a very low signal, where my other ones work just fine. I have to move it closer to the router to get a good signal.

If you go into the configuration utility for your router - I can't be more specific than this - you should be able to change the channel it broadcasts on. That may help your problem. You won't need to do anything with the computers, since they'll find the channel on their own. If it doesn't help, try a different WiFi card. They work best when they're made by the same company as the router.

Is there any software or hardware that can detect WIFI noise influences?

Q. I Have a wireless network setup, but there is a point where the wireless network get interference from somewhere that causing very slow network connections despite that Windows say that the signal strength is excellent, even radios or cellphones are acting up in that area.

Is there anything i can use to detect what it is that can cause this?

A. The easiest way is to use a Spectrum Analyzer. Used to be they were very expensive and only used by those who professionally work with Wifi but there are some units out now that anyone can use and afford. Wi-Spy is one of those available http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/electronic/c240/
Metageeks also have several units that give a complete band view even some advanced units that are very very good . http://www.metageek.net/

In some cases a program like NetStumbler is all that is needed to find interfering AP's within range. That will give you a list of channels and SSIDs and strength of the AP's within range.
http://stumbler.net/ its just software that works with compatible wifi cards. This isn't as complete as a full spectrum scan as it won't show phones, baby room monitors, cameras etc that may be on the same channels.


How can I stop my cordless phone from interfering with my wireless router?

A. Each device uses the same frequency band (as do garage door openers, baby monitors, Web cams, ....).

You can change frequency bands for one or the other. Use a 5Mhz phone, or a 5MHz band WiFi gear (802.11a).

Reduce the relative signal strength seen by the 802.11b/g stuff you've got. Move the phone to the other end of the house. Move the laptop (or whatever) closer, leaving the phone in the same place, ... Add an antenna (probably a corner reflector (chicken wire may be a perfectly sensible material) for the rubber ducky type of antenna design most commonly seen) to both ends of the WiFi link (you may not have to physically crack open the radios at either end, but note that this dodge increases signal strenght in one direction (and does the same to receiver sensitivity). Since both the phone handset(s) and the mobile WiFi device (a laptop, probably) is also mobile, this isn't any kind of universally adequate dodge. Find a way to reduce the phone's signal strength (probably not possible to non-techie types) unless it's possible to say, put soeme absorbing or reflecting material between the phone and the WIFi radios. An experimental bronze foil covered wall, perhaps. Ought to work well if you can keep the two radio types out of each other's effective range. May not be possible in some kinds of interior decorating environments. consult with those in charge before trying anything like this.

Another dodge ito try to arrange that the WiFi antennas are a 90 degree polarizatino difference than the phone antennas (as usually used; if you have sprawling teenagers, this may not be predictable).
Since both devices operate (or probably do) in a spread spectrum mode, each will appear to the other to be a general increase in the noise level against which they must work. Changing channels (if possible) isn't likely to be very effective. Too much noise, no radio receiver will be able to make sense of what it hears.

Does a low signal strength make my connection worse in Modern Warfare 3 on PS3?
Q. I meant low signal strength from my router.

A. Yes. The lower the strength of the signal, the slower it will be.

To increase signal strength, you need to remove sources of EMI (electromagnetic interference) such as baby monitors, 2.4GHz phones, microwaves as well as possibly moving the router to a better spot to decrease dead zones in your coverage area. You can try moving the router closer to the PS3 if that's an option.

Other options include installing a bigger antenna, a directional antenna or adding a wireless access point.

And another way is to eliminate WiFi completely by using Powerline technology. You can use the electrical wires of your house to transmit data. You would need an adapter on each end, though.


Why is my bluetooth internet connection unstable?
Q. I'm using a laptop and a cellphone to connect through the internet with GPRS. When I use USB cable, the connection is 100% stable and fast. But when I use the bluetooth to connect the cellphone to the laptop, the connection speed drops to 10-20% of its optimal speed. Besides, it's so unstable that there's no data transfer at all sometimes (a lot of times actually!).

Please advise me what's possibly wrong with the bluetooth connection.

A. Aside from lousy or defective equipment, it could be interference.

Bluetooth uses the 2.4GHz band, which it shares with cordless phones, wifi, microwave ovens, wireless security cameras, baby monitors, you name it.

Then you have people with data-doubling wireless routers with in-line amplifiers that will stomp all over the spectrum.

If you're moving from place to place, city to city, and have the problem equally everywhere, then you can probably safely rule out wireless interference. You could also try disabling the wifi card in your laptop just for kicks, in case that could be creating interference locally.


do wireless landlines pick up yours or your neighbors phone conversation?
Q. i dont have unlimted minutes on my cell phone.my parents believe that if you have a wireless your neighbors could listen to the conversation know i cant talk on the phone while on the computer or go to my room im going to show my parents the anwsers please help convince them that a wireless land line is better

A. the first cordless phones operated around 48Mhz as well as baby monitors and the like...and were easy for people to listen in on your conversations.. it was not uncommon for a baby monitor to pick up your conversation, or for 2 cordless phones to hear each other....

the 900 Mhz phones solved some of those problems... but people with radio scanners (police scanners) could still listen in on your calls...

DSS technology stopped that... and many newer 900 Mhz phones come with DSS...

also most 2.4Ghz phones have DSS or FHSS, aside from that, most radio scanner equiptment only goes up to 1.3Ghz - however these phones may interfere with WiFi

5.8Ghz phones also normally come with DSS or FHSS... and again are outside the range of most radio scanners.... however, because they are a higher frequency the range is less...

DECT phones operate within the 1.9Ghz range, are immune to interference from other devices, and provide the best range, clarity, and security...

so the only way that a neighbor can listen in to your conversation with a cordless phone that you purchace today would be if you bought a 900Mhz phone that did not have DSS....
