Monitor baby on monitor while at work?

I am a first time mom and really afraid of leaving my newborn at daycare. But I work so I really have no choice. I thought if I could find a monitor with a screen that I could leave with my baby at daycare so I could see him while at work that would be awesome. Do they have those? I searched on the web but I cant find anything long distance. Only house-hold monitors. I am willing to pay a high price it really doesn't matter, I just have to find a way to ease this fear of mine. Baby is due in 2 months.

Please advise I would really appreciate it!!

don't think so, but...there are daycares that have webcams in them that you can access from a computer at any time of the day.....maybe you could find one of those...if i HAD to put my baby in daycare, that is the only kind i would leave her in....probably more expensive, but when it comes to our babies and their safety and well being, i am willing to pay for it...and crappy ppl tend to behave better when they know they are being watched...

What are your needs? Neither of these monitors will likely work in a 3 level home or in one with a lot of square feet. They just don't have the distance. I do want to say that your Fisher Price selection worked perfect for my cousin and his GF in their split level home.

If you need more distance or need it also for going outside (say to get the mail or garden), then this one would be a better choice.

Even people at e-pinions didn't like your one selection and I suspect the problem is interference in the neighborhood or within the home. As mentioned, my cousin had it with no problems after nearly 3 years. I would ignore the advice of the reviewer at Target. She has had 3 monitors and nothing works. She doesn't get a clue that it is her HOME that is the problem, not the monitors.

Are plain, old baby monitors adequate?

I'm being a bit proactive and have decided to educate myself on all these baby gadgets. I had a pregnancy that ended in a miscarriage, so even though I was only pregnant a short time, I remember how stressed I was trying to figure out all of this stuff.
So my question is... I thought baby monitors were a dime a dozen. Never knew there were motion sensors, 49 mhz and 900 mhz, video, laptop viewable, etc etc etc. The reviews saying how some mother's felt their babies lives were saved by the motion sensors got me into "paranoid-mommy-to-be" mode. When I was little, everyone had those Graco, lights when the baby makes noise versions. Does anyone find that these are perfectly adequate for their babies, or are the motion sensors/video models really a better choice? Keeping in mind that I'm trying to restrain myself from one day spending thousands of dollars on things a baby will use for a year. :)

I didn't use one - we live in an apartment, were never going to be that far from the baby, I'm skeptical about gagetry, and I had a sixth sense that alerted me whenever my little one had a hiccup in the next room.

If I'd had a big house I might have gotten a simple monitor, but I think a lot of these things are designed to separate you from your wallet ...and will surely rob you of more sleep than you can afford in general.

Just my $.02 - and I know how it feels to be prenatally paranoid. I'm sure I had plenty of my own issues although this wasn't one of mine. :)

I'm due in October and am just looking for a baby monitor. I have read that the Tommee Tippee and Angelcare (not sure which models) both with sensor pads, and the BT 150 are good. I'm not sure about the sensor pads, I have heard they give a lot of false alarms, plus I don't want to be too paranoid. I know they can be useful for premature babies or those with health conditions, but what about full term healthy babies, is there any need?

If you are already a worrier the more things your monitor "checks", the more things you're going to worry about. When the breathing monitor isn't going off you'll wonder if it's really working, with video you'll spend your day watching the monitor.

I would suggest a good quality audio monitor with 2 receivers. What will work best for you depends on where you live, in an apartment complex, a house, near an airport...etc.

If you don't have to worry about interference then a model like the Fisher Price "Lights and Sounds" is a great choice. Always rated highly and about $40. It's the model I've used for over 3 years with no problems. If intereference could be a problem, skip the 900 MHz models and go with one in the 2.45 a 2.54 GHz range. The prices are almost the same, and with the 2.xx GHz models you're pretty much guaranteed no interference.

A couple of good choices in that range are the First Years "True Choice digital monitor" ($80), and the Graco "I-vibe" ($90). Both have 2 receivers so you can leave one in your bedroom, and have one to carry around.

Where should a newborn baby sleep?

I wanted to get your opinion on where the baby should sleep, and why.

I feel like the baby should sleep in his/her room, with a baby monitor, so he/she grows accustom to it. Sure, it probably is a pain to get up and walk down the hall a few times a night. But doesn't it promote better sleeping habits?

My boyfriend thinks he/she should sleep in the room with us, in a bassinet, so he/she is close to us for safety and convenience. Won't the baby eventually expect to sleep in the room with us?

In your room.. in a bassinet or a co-sleeper. My son hated his bassinet so we got him the Snuggle Nest adult bed co-sleeper that is placed right inside your bed.. he loved it and slept there until he was 3 months. He had no problem transitioning into his crib either. He likes his crib. I am not into the Pack N Play choice for a place to sleep at night.. it is meant to be packing for playing or for a quick nap, not to be used as a bed. It's uncomfortable in my opinion. Well I always feel it is the parents responsibility to get the big things like the nursary furnature but some items to register for would be:

Moby Wrap or sling
diaper bag
bottles (if you plan to use them)
boppy pillow (I dont breastfeed but my daughter loves to be propped up on it to look around and for tummy time)
swing (my biggest lifesaver!)
playpen (I dont use it much yet because she is still young, but now that she is learning to roll it comes in handy)
humidifier (I use the Carne kind from babies r us...looks like a ducky)
your obvious blankets, towels, clothing (I suggest asking for slightly bigger clothing as people tend to get neworn or 0-3 months and your baby may not fit these things long. My daughter was never in newborn and she outgrew most 0-3 month items by 7 weeks old)
carseat (I dont know if you plan on getting a travel system or a converstable carseat. I got a travel system and I am already planning to sell it...shes 12 weeks old. I find the stroller too bulky...I use a Moby instead and I find the infant carseat a royal pain in the butt. Some people love it however and use the carseat to sit the baby in so this will be personal choice)

another suggestion I have is to register for things you wont need right away but will later. I find so many people ask for all the "now" stuff then have nothing for months down the road. Thinks like a high chair or booster, clothing for later (light sleepers and onsies are used in all seasons so it wont matter what season your child fits 6,9 or 12 month clothes) feeding bowls and spoons (I have a bowl with a handle...its great because she cant bat it out of my hands) sippy cups, potty treaining seat or toilet.....things like that.

What are you supposed to do for "prizes" of baby shower games?

Q. I've been to different showers that did different things. One shower i was at, everyone won baby stuff (monitors, clothes...) and everyone gave what they won to the new mommy! I've been to another one where you won baby bottles full of jelly beans, and the other one i've been to i can't remember what the prizes were. What would you do for prizes for the games we play at the shower?
And do you have any ideas about favors?

A. It's totally up to you. I've been to some where the prizes were lotions, spa stuff, video rental gift cards, even starbucks gift cards.

Q. I was just wondering, what is better a black throat monitor or a white throat? I am going to the reptile expo and their should be tons of baby monitors for sale, what would be better? I already have a savannah that is the weirdest thing, I bought a nile, and they have been living together for the past 2 years. But anyway, what would be better with temperment?

A. ridge tailed monitors (ackies) are the best choice for a first time varanid or tegu type "pet" hands down, nothing is as friendly or inquisitive as an ackie in the whole monitor, tegu world. no discussion on this one. forget the savannah or black/white throat you need to have some monitor/tegu keeping years under your belt before you get one of these. you will fail and they will die or be you will be overwhelmed by their care and cost , probably both. here is a link to all you you need to know to get started with ackies http://www.proexotics.com/FAQ2.html#14
as far as tegus go all are fairly easy to keep its just size and temperaments that differ ( they all get big just some bigger ); blue tegus are the smallest, have nice temperament, and can subside on an all rodent diet. argentine black and whites (aka. the chacoan or giant tegu) are the most recommended species for the beginner do to there excellent temperaments and their very, forgiving of keeper mistakes. they are also one of the largest tegu species some individuals will take some fruit as well as rodents some not . the red tegu is also one of the largest along with the argentin black and white. it also shares the same excellent temperament as the arentine black and white but it is not very forgiving of mistakes in their care at all. colombian black and white tegus(common tegu) is the least recommended they are just as easy to keep as most of the other tegus ,its their temperament that are shitty. they are down right mean! here is a link to one of the most respected tegu breeder in the world bert langerwerf at http://www.agamainternational.com/

p.s. savs. and tegus need a minimum cage size of 8 feet long by 4 feet wide by 4 feet deep, a black throat monitor minimum cage size of 12 feet by 6 feet by 6 feet. those are some big cages! and feeding is EXPENSIVE . an breeding trio of ackies on the other hand needs a minimum cage size of 4 feet long by 2 feet wide by 2 feet deep ,that is a MUCH more easy to provide cage size then the others and the feeding isnt a fraction of the cost..which one is going to be cared for properly by a monitor / tegu newbie? these animals are a whole different ball game than any other herp. besides the size thing get old fast when it comes to monitors. . go ackie!


p.p.s. i guess i didnt read the whole question cause i just noticed the sav. & nile thing. monitors ARE social animals( frank retes at the goanna ranch proved this fact) but only in same species/breeding settings ( for the most part ). i agree with william w maybe you should reconsider keeping monitors

How often should I feed baby savannah monitor?

Q. Well I have a 3 month baby savannH monitor how often should I feed her and how many crickets when I feed her? Also how big will she get in a year?

A. Nice choice of a lizard there amazing. I have one and I feed it a fuzzy every week and randomly throughout the week I chuck in some roaches but I wouldn't really copy this way as it worked for me I'm not too sure it would work for you. I had mine since a baby of about 1 month old and about 3-4 months you can start to feed him pinkys. A good pinky once a month should be maximum because too many could be bad as there still young and mice are fatty and lack the better vitamins. So I'd stick with roaches or crickets . In a year it will grow to about a foot and they grow the most in 3 years so this is when you need to get a good feed

Q. Did you/do you use a baby monitor with the baby in the other room at night...or did/does your baby sleep in your room?

Do you think any either of those are a bad choice?

A. My son slept in our room with us until he was reliably sleeping through the night. After that we moved him into his own room across the hall. I wanted to keep him as close to me as possible when he was waking up often at night so that I wouldn't have to walk as far to get him and put him back to bed. Lazy, I know, but practical. He slept in his bassinet at the foot of my bed, which meant I didn't even have to get out of bed to tend to him. I just don't see any joy in getting out of bed, walking around the house, getting baby, putting baby back, and walking back to bed when you have to do it several times a night.

We moved him into his own room across the hall, left both doors open, and I made certain the baby monitor was positioned close to my head so that I would hear him. I don't know what I was thinking, but we didn't need the baby monitor at all. I mean, he was only 20-30 feet away with both doors open. When he cried, I heard him. Even in our larger home now, I can hear him cry across the house with both of our bedroom doors shut.

No, I don't think either choices are inherently bad. I do think that co-sleeping, done properly, is the safest option for a newborn since it prevents SIDS. It also helps babies sleep better.
