care worker with elderly....can anyone mention some SKILLS?

I need this 4 my placement report...and i cannot find any...thx?

Answer
I have worked thru Hospice and on my own and for a National Company. I have certs in medicine assistance, cpr and first aid. You will need to read well, show compassion, do bathing and change diapers and move your client around often to avoid bed sores. Read to them and do laundry and cook and clean and using a baby monitor will give you peace of mind. You need to nap when they nap--if you are doing in home care. You need to know how to deal with friends and relatives, know how to deal with death and what to do when it occurs and have a strong heart and broad shoulders. I have also cooked and cared for mental patients in a private facility. You need to know that their privacy counts. You may have to clean up some horrid messes without a peep. Common Sense is very important.

Has anyone seen the show "The Baby Borrowers" ?

For those who have seen it, what are your thoughts?

For those who are unaware of what it's about, please read below and tell me what you think?

Each week a teenage couple aged 18-20 will set up a home and become parents beginning with a baby, then a toddler, pre-teens, teenagers, and finally elderly adults over the course of one month. The couples will participate in pre-natal classes prior to the arrival of the baby, every three days the couples will advance to the next stage. Some couples may have an only child while some may have the responsibility of taking care of siblings.[1] There are no eliminations or prizes (with the exception of experience).

Married couples volunteered to participate in the experiment by letting the teenage couple "borrow" their child. They would deliver the child to their home, offer advice about how to respond in certain situations and gave a manual with instructions (i.e. child likes/dislikes, favorite food or toys, when to feed them, etc.) The couples cared for the child (or children) away from their parents for 3 days. The parents stayed across the street in a home and were able to monitor their child and the couple on surveillance video that was set up all around the home. If at any time they felt they were needed or wanted to help, they were able to step in. A professional nanny also stayed with the couple and their child and monitored them. The nanny was only allowed to "shadow" to ensure the safety of the child and could only come forth in the event of an emergency. Once the age turned to the teenagers, there was no more parent or nanny monitoring.

I think it's a good idea. Like most of us, I just don't think teenagers put alot of thought into what parenting will actually be like. They live life with their head in the clouds and when told that it's not right for having babies at 15, one of their justification is 'Girls did it in the old days". Well, they were also married, had nothing else/weren't allowed to DO anything else and didn't need two incomes to survive.

I'm not bashing accidental teen mothers so for those of you who are, please don't be offended. I'm simply saying that teen girls who DO want to get pregnant.. the naivety is just incredibly frustrating.
There is no monetary gain, simply experience and hopefully a valuable lesson.

Answer
I think it's good for the teens but I don't think it's healthy for the loaned out babies. It's stressful and confusing for them to be taken from their home and put with strangers like that who don't know what they are doing. I mean I know their parents are in the next house watching them on TV and can intervene at anytime, but the babies don't know that and would still be confused.

Baby Monitors... but for the Elderly... Post-Op?

Q. Hey everyone! Hope you're having a great day... =)

I am probably going to move in to take care of an 88 year old lady who just had a hip operation. Thing is, she likes her privacy, and I do need to do a lot of work online (though I will be in the same house, still).

So I thought it'd be a good idea to use something like a baby monitor to keep next to her, so she can call me when she needs me, or I can hear her if she stumbles, etc.... is there something that she can wear, maybe attached to her clothing or around her neck, too, where I can keep an ear on her, other than some type of baby monitor? We're looking for something low-cost but reliable, too.

I appreciate anyone's ideas very, very much -- THANK YOU!

Love,
Jaxxy. =)

i need to find some kind of keychain, necklace, or watch. that my mom could press and i would have a receiver in my room to alert me incase she falls. is there anything like this in the market?
lifealert is good but i kind of wanted something that she would carry and its connected to a receiver that will alert me that she needs me.

Answer
Yes lots of stuff. They have panic button watches and monitors much like one uses in a baby's room. There are necklaces as well. You can buy online or at your Pharmacy. Check out LifeAlert.

Check out The LifeLink panic button system. The panic system user is provided with peace of mind knowing that emergency assistance will be onsite by simply pressing the emergency call button on the small wireless medallion.

What is a baby monitor and how it works?

Amina L

I have an elderly client with this baby monitor. Is it possible to move it just like any other electronic by unplugging it and plugging it in another room? So that if I move from room to room I can still monitor that person. I do not want to mess with it by taking it off without knowing anything about it.
I would like to plug it in another room where I can turn on light and read, not to disturb the client and still hear hear her via the monitor.

Answer
A baby monitor can be 1 way , 2 way, an now they even have one with a camera attached. It usually has a base that you keep with the baby and a hand held you can walk around with. The 2 way allows you to hear the baby and speak back if you want. They work really well and its a great way to keep track of babies and small children while in another room or doing house work.
I have used these many times working in healthcare having elderly patients.

I have a baby pet turtle. The other day i was siphoning his tank and i got some water in my mouth. I quickly spit, brushed my teeth, and used mouth wash...but is it possible that this could be a cause of salmonella? I woke up feeling sick. I've had diarrhea and continuous stomach pain. That's it though. Should i be really concerned and go to the hospital?

Answer
Turtles very often carry Salmonella. Usually, Salmonella does go away on its own though, so give yourself some time. And very often it is not treated with antibiotics even if you do go to a doctor.

Occasionally though, the Salmonella infection is severe and sometimes people do wind up in the hospital (usually the elderly or the very young).

Monitor how you are feeling and if it lasts longer than a few days or you develop blood in the stool, then go see a doctor.

What are the benefits or side effects from taking Zoloft?

hillaryc59

My husband has been depressed and is considering asking a doctor for a prescription for Zoloft.

Now, we've heard both good and not so good things about Zoloft.
I'd appreciate any feedback from anyone out there, including physicians on Zoloft. How long before it starts to take effect or you notice any results. Drug interactions etc.

Thank you!

Answer
Zoloft is an antidepressant and it didn't do much for me.

According to Drugs.com: http://www.drugs.com/zoloft.html
"You may have thoughts about suicide when you first start taking an antidepressant, especially if you are younger than 24 years old. Zoloft is FDA-approved for children with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). It is not approved for treating depression in children. Your doctor will need to check you at regular visits for at least the first 12 weeks of treatment.
Call your doctor at once if you have any new or worsening symptoms such as: mood or behavior changes, anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, or if you feel impulsive, irritable, agitated, hostile, aggressive, restless, hyperactive (mentally or physically), more depressed, or have thoughts about suicide or hurting yourself. SSRI antidepressants may cause serious or life-threatening lung problems in newborn babies whose mothers take the medication during pregnancy. However, you may have a relapse of depression if you stop taking your antidepressant during pregnancy. If you are planning a pregnancy, or if you become pregnant while taking Zoloft, do not stop taking the medication without first talking to your doctor....

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: skin rash or hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:

* seizure (convulsions);
* tremors, shivering, muscle stiffness or twitching;
* problems with balance or coordination; or
* agitation, confusion, sweating, fast heartbeat.

Less serious Zoloft side effects may include:

* drowsiness, dizziness, weakness;
* nausea, diarrhea, dry mouth, or changes in appetite or weight; or
* decreased sex drive, impotence, or difficulty having an orgasm.

This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Tell your doctor about any unusual or bothersome side effect....

Before taking Zoloft, tell your doctor if you are using any of the following medicines:

* tramadol (Ultram, Ultram ER, Ultracet);...

Zoloft is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). It works by restoring the balance of serotonin, a natural substance in the brain, which helps to improve certain mood problemsâ¦.

Caution is advised when using Zoloft in the ELDERLY; they may be more sensitive to its effects, especially low blood sodium levels."

Serotonin is the neurotransmitter that is most often increased or decreased when trying to treat sleep disorders and Fibromyalgia. It has to be monitored carefully when taking Tramadol because of the increased chance of seizures. There are other drugs that can cause harmful interaction as well as alcohol.

Few antidepressants actually create a high in the person who is taking them, unless they are taken by someone who really doesnât need it. This is where drug abuse becomes a problem, but if a person is prescribed the medication it is because they need it and that need reduces the chance of addiction as the medical properties are exploited.

Different antidepressants act upon various people in different ways as per their disease, their biology and frankly some unknown factors. We donât know exactly how these drugs work; we only know what they SEEM to do and how effective they CAN be. The problem is that they can also not work for some people.

Taylor C

I have chosen the question : are we too dependent on life simplifying devices? Im not looking for someone to write my paper just I want to know if anyone has any Idea about some things that I should touch on in my paper

thanks in advance.

Answer
Hi Taylor,

Yes, I believe we are (too) dependent on life simplifying devices. I've bracketed the word 'too' because I believe there are some devices that add to daily life stresses and yet have a place in our life style.

Take Communications:
I guess the ability to be able to communicate with and actually see the person you are communicating with (Skype) is really a marvelous experience. (My daughter lives in Dublin Ireland and I live in Perth Western Australia, so we connect frequently using Skype).

If we look at 'e-mail', it can be seen as a 'blessing or curse'. A blessing for the speed of sending messages and receiving replies'. A curse for people who work, because in today's business climate where time = profit, many senders expect a prompt reply and this increases the stress and work-load of the recipient.

Home Appliances:
Again, the speed of preparing meals, boiling water, cooking and cleaning all are made possible through the use of modern devices.

The drudgery of laundry compared to a time before the development of 'washing machines' is a boon to those who have to do the laundry.

Devices that help to monitor that a baby is sleeping safely, that help people with 'sleep apnea disorders' offer an early warning in the event of something going wrong.

Similarily, devices that provide an 'early warning' system for the elderly who live alone or who are impaired in some way, provide a measure of early warning and not least, comfort for their families.

In the home: Smoke detectors are essential safety protectors.

Hope this helps.

How can i control my sleep?

Q. I like to sleep a lot. Sometimes i sleep for 10+ hours in a day. Some people say its not healthy. Is there any way for me to control my sleep?
thanks for your info sir, to provide more info, I am 19 years old. But, usually while sleeping, I have these dreams, and i can't seem to get out of them easily.

Answer
Ok, without getting a full history beyond "I sleep 10+ hours a day", there may or may not be a health issue here. Although the "appropriate" amount of sleep is widely accepted to be an AVERAGE of about 8 hours; there are clearly individual differences among people in what their sleep "need" is.

Beyond the individual differences, there are also age related need... babies will sleep much of the day, where as the elderly will need a bit less than the average adult. Children and teens will need a bit more than the average adult (although teens will often not get it due to poor sleep habits).

Now, all that being said, you may indeed have a sleep disorder with 10+ hours of sleep. That is quite a bit for someone who typed at least 3 sentences with proper grammer and syntax. There are some non-respiratory (the most common sleep disorder is Obstructive Sleep Apnea) that can cause people to sleep all the time and teen years is when they tend to show up. Narcolepsy and Klein Levens comes to mind, but they are rather rare, and the cataplexy (sudden loss of muscle tone resulting in collapse) that is associated with narcolepsy isn't something that is easily overlooked.

If you find that you snore when you sleep, then obstructive sleep apnea is a possibility; indicating that you may be breathing poorly (or not at all) through the night disrupting your sleep and requiring you to stay in bed tring to catch up longer. When apneics wake up hundreds of times a night to breath, they don't actually remember it generally.

Additionally, poor sleep hygeine can add to the amount of sleep you end up trying to get. If you have a poor sleep schedule (changing get up and go to bed times often), work out close to bedtime, drink caffeine late, have TV or radio on at bedtime, read in bed, etc... then you may not be getting very good sleep, and therefore needing more sleep.

NOW, with all those possiblilities thrown out, there are still more I haven't mentioned. The best thing to do is seek out a sleep disorders center in your area (they are everywhere) and get a referal from your primary care physician and have a sleep study done to determine if indeed you have a problem that may be a health risk to you. These are easy tests really, you will come into a lab before bed, they will attach a couple dozen wires to you with a little glue and you'll sleep overnight while being monitored, if narcolepsy is suspected then you may do some "nap studies" through the day also. When its all done, a sleep specialist will review the results with you determining if you do or do not have a sleep disorder.

Good Luck

Yes, sibling jealousy is alive and well. It started way back with Cain and Able.
I came from a family of 7 siblings, now all grown and the older siblings retiring some are highly successful, others.. not so much.

You are probably right... you gained weight, you were sick, she seemed to skip through it all. Her kids will be perfect, her life will blossom, her kids will win the lotto etc..

You are not imagining things, there are people in this world that seem to get all the breaks.. not all the time but it seems like it in our eyes. I just stand there, scratch my head and say, "Really.... you have got to be kidding me...." as I look to the heavens for some explanation.

Well... there really is no explanation other than that's the way it is. However; I experienced something one day that made me stop that kind of thought that I want to share.

My wife needed a quick test done at a hospital so I grabbed the daughter and wife and took a 3 hr drive to a major hospital to do this test which has nothing to do with this story as the test was a no nothing... but as my wife was being tested my daughter and I went to a little tea room up on the 3rd floor. This tea room overlooked a park, had large glass windows to take in the beautiful view as the autumn colors was on the trees and an adjacent lake glowed with the fall color.

As my daughter and I sat there and sipped our tea an elderly couple walked in followed by a hospital gurney type bed with bright white sheets being pushed by an orderly. The bed had all the latest monitoring equipment attached, I.V.s tubes etc and in the bed was a man about my age who was bald, sickly thin, pale white and appeared to be suffering from an advanced disease. I suspected cancer.

His bed was gently pushed up to the window so he could see out as the older couple got some coffee and cookies. The 3 of them sat there, staring out into the beautiful trees. The elderly lady fed whom I guess to be her son a bite of cookie, he weakly smiled. Small talk ensued among them but mostly they just sat next to his bed, staring outside, spending what I can only asses to be precious remaining moments.

As I sat with my little daughter she gave me a look of concern as she had never seen anything like that and I gently smiled to assure her everything was o.k. It helped put many things in my life into perspective. What truly is important in my life. As that man was in that bed, ill, dying could have easily been me, or you, or my daughter, my wife.. you never know.

So I told myself events will happen. Some people just seem to skate, some fall on their bum and others face the full wrath of what the Terrestrial world can dump on them.

"By the grace of God, go I." I believe is the saying, Meaning it isn't my time to face the trials that that man was facing. My time will come, some time, in some way and I pray I handle it with as much grace as which was displayed by this elderly couple and their son.

Don't be a martyr, don't compare, don't complain, be happy for your sister.

Congratulations on your pregnancy. Sounds like you will make a great mom.

If you holler, do so for all those many woman that can't conceive, that pray they could be you, at that time, in that place to hold that baby.

Best wishes.

Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:

* seizure (convulsions);
* tremors, shivering, muscle stiffness or twitching;
* problems with balance or coordination; or
* agitation, confusion, sweating, fast heartbeat.

Less serious Zoloft side effects may include:

* drowsiness, dizziness, weakness;

It works by restoring the balance of serotonin, a natural substance in the brain, which helps to improve certain mood problems….

Few antidepressants actually create a high in the person who is taking them, unless they are taken by someone who really doesn’t need it. This is where drug abuse becomes a problem, but if a person is prescribed the medication it is because they need it and that need reduces the chance of addiction as the medical properties are exploited.

Different antidepressants act upon various people in different ways as per their disease, their biology and frankly some unknown factors. We don’t know exactly how these drugs work; we only know what they SEEM to do and how effective they CAN be. The problem is that they can also not work for some people.

How can I stop being jealous of my sister's ideal pregnancy?

Robin

I have that ugly linea negra line. I gained so much more weight than her. She did not have morning sickness or anything. She just complained about her feet feeling swollen and feeling more tired. I have a change in appetite. I vomit. She had an ideal childbirth too. She took the pain relatively well. I am scared I am going to be those hollering pregnant women.
