video baby monitor for 18 month old? ?

Q. Ok, so my son is 18 months and in the mornings, i can never tell what he's up to.. Hes quiet then you hear him giggling, i'll get up to get him, and he's passed out again! So we're arguing about getting the video baby monitor to keep an eye on him in the morning and after naps. He's about to be moved into a toddler bed, and i'd like to know what the heck he'll be doing when he gets up.. Sooo do you think it's worth the money or just a simple waste?

Answer
Why bother with a baby video monitor? He is 18 months old.

My brother and his wife had one with their child, it was at the side of their bed so they could see it easily - the funny thing was that if they looked past it, they could actually see the baby in bed! What a waste of good money, just to have the newest toy!

So, unless your room is on a different floor or is a long way from the baby's room, you really don't need one.

When did you stop using a baby monitor?

Q. This is a spin-off from Too Lazy To Use Spellcheck's question about still checking on your sleeping child.

We never used a baby monitor, mainly b/c our daughter slept in our room. Even when she took naps throughout the day, I was always in the same room or the next one.

A week ago I went to a friend's house. She took me into her bedroom to show me something and I noticed she had 2 baby monitors on her night stand. She saw me looking at them and said, "One is for the baby (a few months old) and one is for Sophie." Her daughter Sophie is 6 yrs old. I thought that was a little odd, but I didn't say anything.

When did you stop using a monitor? Did anyone continue to use one as their child was older?

Answer
Didn't need or wanted to buy a baby monitor... at one point after having our second child we did consider it but after thinking it through we realized what we have known from the beginning and that it was not needed and would just be a waste of money. We don't need a device helping us monitoring our children when we are capable of doing it ourselves. We didn't have one for our first child so it make sense that we didn't need it for our second. From them being newborns to growing up to be a young child I find that we've always spent all our time watching over them constantly because giving them 100% of our attention our love is very important to us. We had our children because all our time spent making sure they are loved, feed, happy, etc is what we expect as parents now why would we want to leave them alone for minutes or hours to play by themselves? For us it is essential that we spend as much time as we can with our children, we live for them more than we live for ourselves. We are truly blessed to have our children in our lives and we intend to be the kind of parents that they need and want.

Baby Heart Monitor?

Q. I bought a baby heart monitor, I don't know if it was because it was cheap (20 dollars), but it said that i would be able to hear kicking and hiccups and stuff. I am only 4 months pregnant and it says you wont be able to hear the heart beat until 5. I was just getting ansy and wanted to make sure everything is still OK. We tried it on my belly and I heard lots of noises, then we tried it on my boyfriend and heard the exact same noises. Do they even work??
After reading your answers I guess my 20 dollars could have been better spent on CRAVINGS!

Answer
yea-some of them dont work until 8th or 9th month-it really just depends on how strong your babys heartbeat is.
and you have to be very precise & know exactly where baby's heartbeat is to actually find it .

9 times out of 10--the heartbeat you are hearing is your own.
next time you are at your doctors and he/she checks for baby's heartbeat-try to remember exactly where he heard/found it

personally I think they are a waste of money
you could always take yours to your next appt though and if the doctor or nurse has a free minute--ask them if they can find the heartbeat using whatever monitor you got.

Fuzzy baby monitors.. normal?

youbet-its

Are baby monitors supposed to sound really fuzzy? I thought maybe I just had the monitor out of range, but i tried it right in his bedroom next to the other one and it still did it.. also I am sure it is on the right channel.

Answer
Our baby monitor is three years old and gets fuzzy occasionally. I think it's the the end of the cord that plugs into the monitor. If we take it out and put it back in, it usually works. We got some gift money for our baby, who is due in November, we're going to put that aside for a new one, as we will probably quit using it with our three-year-old. However, he'll be rooming with me or us for several months after he is born.

When our monitor has its fuzzy moments, and it's not getting unfuzzy, I just make sure I can hear noises from her bedroom to hear her. (Also, her bedroom is over the living room where I sit while she is napping and I can generally hear her through the floor/ceiling.)

newborn baby checklist?

Ashley Kas

so i am a young teen mom well soon to be mom and me and my boyfriend were wondering if somebody could give us a newborn baby check list so we know what to get for our little baby we do not know if its a boy or girl yet please help us also if you have some new parenting tips for how to take care of a newborn baby plz feel free to give us your ideas we need all the help we can get

Answer
Being young I'm assuming you're not rolling in money ;) There are many "essentials" that you really actually don't need. A change table is handy and comfortable, but not necessary. You can lay the baby on your bed or on a rug on the floor for nappy/clothes changes. Unless you're living in a big place, you probably won't need a baby monitor. We've got a decent 3 bedroom home and bought one when we were expecting our first, but really, the baby cries loud enough for you to hear them anyway. Don't buy too many toys, if any at all. It'll be a long time till they'll even notice them, in which time others may have given them as gifts or you may have had their first Christmas when you can buy them for them. "Baby" towels are nice if you can afford them, but otherwise an adult towel will still do the exact same thing.

-A good stash of newborn size nappies (in case you don't want to go to the shops for the first week or so)
-Baby wipes (don't just buy the cheapest you can find, because they probably won't work. They'll be ridiculously thin and dry out as soon as you open the packet - found this out the hard way. But you also don't need the most expensive and fancy ones either.)
-Not sure what climate you live in, but have a few jumpsuits and other clothes in both size 0000 and 000 (if you see them on special) because they'll probably fit in the 0000 and you want them ready to go, but they might come up as big bubbas and need the 000. DO NOT take any tags off until you're about to dress them, that way what doesn't fit/get used and can be taken back for a refund (if you kept the receipt) or you can swap them for clothes that do fit.
-Plenty of cloths and/or bibs for wiping up baby spew
-2-3 baby wraps (I would go with muslin in case your baby is born during warmer weather and you still want to wrap them. If where you live is cold, you can always warm them up with an extra blanket or warmer clothes under the wrap)
-2-3 baby blankets
-cot
-if baby is born in colder weather, about 2 beanies to keep their little head warm
-a pair of mittens is good to keep hands warm and prevent their nails scratching them, but not really necessary if your budget doesn't allow for them.
-Baby bath wash (my favourite is Johnson & Johnson Top to toe)
-Baby powder and nappy rash cream (you don't want to only buy these once your baby has a rash, you'll want them handy so you can deal with it immediately and not have to wait till the next time the shop is open)

For you - plenty of maternity pads and breast pads (if you run out and send your boyfriend out for more, you should give him the packet to take to the shops with him so he comes back with the right ones).

Parenting tip - ask everything! No matter how silly it sounds, if you're unsure, ask. And be specific if you need to be. Good luck :)

My husband and I are fighting nonstop about a baby monitor, there are several couples on our street who have babies and who will around the time we will have ours. I feel we need to spend more on a monitor so we don't pick up other babies crying on ours, and he doesn't want to spend any extra money. Can any parents tell me will I wake up if I don't have a monitor close by? Help!

Answer
I don't use a monitor at night for my 4 month old, she has been in her own room since 1 month and I hear her just fine when she wakes up. We also have a fan on in our room as well as a sound machine in hers. My husband does not wake up when she cries but I do, I think it is just a mother's instinct, we are so in tune with our little ones! I do reccomend a monitor for when you need to be doing something outside and won't hear him/her or for peace of mind when you have company or are watching tv and might not here cries over every day noise.

What is the best video/audio monitor to buy?

Nikki

I am looking to buy a video baby monitor through walmart. I am looking at the Graco iMonitor Baby Video Monitor, the Summer Infant 900 MHz 2.5" Color Handheld Video Monitor, and the MobiCam Ultra Wireless Color Video Monitor System. I have read reviews on all of them and have compared all of the features but still do not know which one would be best. Can anyone give me any input please? Thanks!!!!!!

Answer
Hi! Well since no one else answered your question I just thought to give some input from my experience. Perhaps you haven't yet had your baby? I was the very same way. I went out and planned every last product to put into my nursery: $200 bassinette, expensive travel system, breast pump set, sounds n lights baby monitor (fisher-price) etc. He won't sleep in the bassinette, the travel system is nice but the stroller that went with it is so big and bulky and so inconvenient and heavy to unload that I never us it. I used the breast pump only a few times because my milk didn't come in properly. The monitor is rarely used because I carry the baby with me everywhere in the house (in his carrier) but sometimes when I have the right batteries for it, I use it when I am outside visiting neighbors. I guess my point in saying all of this is that I think you should wait until the baby comes and you know for sure what will work for you and also you won't waste a lot of time and money on stuff that you regret and never use.

In Canada, is it illegal for someone to listen in on my baby monitor? And how likely is it to happen?

Just wondering what the laws are here, can't seem to find much information on it. The monitor transmits on 49MHz frequency. The other day I happened to catch something that sounded like a walkie talkie and it made me wonder if I'm hearing that on my monitor, could anyone be listening to our family? Hopefully no one is, but I have caught my snoopy neighbours sitting in the dark, looking into my window once. I'm now pretty weary of them.

If this monitor is easy to listen to, is there a baby monitor that anyone knows of that transmits on a frequency that would be more difficult to listen in on?

Thanks for any info!
That is correct, it's a baby monitor. It's not a magical device that stops transmitting sounds that don't originate directly from the baby or within the baby's room. It is capable of transmitting any sounds near the room. I'm well aware that my baby monitor is not secure in any way, that's why I'm here asking. My question is about it being legal or not to take advantage of this monitor and use it to eavesdrop on a family. I'm not interested in "probably" legal, I'd like to hear from someone who knows about these specific radio laws here in Canada.

Answer
It is perfectly legal in Canada to possess and use radio equipment which is able to receive broadcast provided that the information is not passed on or disclosed to another person or people. It is illegal to decrypt encrypted or scrambled communications. Laws are laid out in the Canadian Radiocommunications Act.

Police scanners are perfectly legal. So are cell phone scanners. Equipment such as baby monitors and cordless phones are notoriously cheap and only operate over a limited range of radio frequencies. It is often possible for two different sets of baby monitors to be on the same frequency and hear each other just by chance. Most operate on frequencies not easily picked up by standard two-way radios, but one with enough money one can purchase radio equipment able to pick up those frequencies. However, in most cases, someone would have to be extremely serious if they wanted to listen to your baby monitor -- or just extremely (un)lucky that their system picked it up.

In previous jobs I've had access to equipment able to pick up the darnedest things. You'd be installing some equipment on a remote mountain top and then listening to a crane operator on minute and a couple of arguing fishermen the next. People do have a habit of assuming that no one else is listening.

You can look for units which have scramblers built in. You can use wired units. You can locate it against an outside wall with a (silvered) mirror behind it. You can find one which you can lower its transmitting power -- or in which you can take off its transmitting antenna. Try walking around your house with the receiver and see how far away you can hear anything. Many units allow resetting of frequencies -- you can do this every day -- and some even to this each time it is turned on/off.

Where can I get a grant for my invention?

above the

It's a baby monitor type and I don't want a loan really. I heard the goverment gives out grants but none seem to be for inventions or child health. Help? Links?

Answer
You heard wrong. There are no grants for commercial development of anything. The grants go to non-profits that test safety. If you want to sell your product you have to invest your own money.
