What is the exact reason you can't put the babies on their tummy to sleep? I personally think it is safer to put them on their tummy than on their back. The day I brought my baby home I laid him on his back to go to bed and he started gagging and choking (on his shit or tongue or something). So I started co-sleeping because I was terrified he was going to choke in his sleep and die. Anyway!! There has been 3 accidents where he was laying on his back and he started throwing up and started choking on his throw up. He couldn't do anything and if I hadn't been in the room he would have choked and died. (Luckily I was in the room) So I have been super paranoid about that and I always have him sleep where I can see him. But it's been wearing on me so I've been trying to have him sleep in his crib during the day (that way I can hear the monitor if anything goes wrong). But every time I put him in hs crib he only sleeps for about 30 minutes.
SO! I was doing tummy time the other day and he fell asleep on his tummy and I let him sleep. (He was in front of me the whole time) And he slept wonderfully!! So I put him in his crib on his belly at his next nap and he slept 5 hours!! He loves being on his tummy!
So I was wondering why is it safer to put them on their backs? Because to me the belly is safer. He can lift his head up wonderfully and scoot himself forwards and sidewards. So if he did throw up he could move himself out of the way.

In New Zealand they have been doing a study for 11 years. They use a mattress wrap made of polyethylene. NO baby that has slept on one of these wrapped or organic mattresses has died of sids. NONE of them. Before they started this test, New Zealand had the highest rate of crib death. (2.1 deaths for 1,000 births) Now their rates have fallen by 70%.

After reading this article and doing further study, I really think it's not how you lay the baby but the toxins in the mattress that cause the death. That would explain why having a fan on helps lower the risk. It stirs up the air so the baby isn't breathing in the toxins as much. Read the article, it's full of helpful information. I wish more people knew about it.

Also when you go into the hospital and they check you in and check the blood pressure, monitor the baby what else they do? Do they insert IV even through you decide not to have pain medication.

Depends on what part of the world you are living in - it's completely different in America say, as opposed to Australia/New Zealand. - So to answer your question - this is such a personal choice! I encourage mums to prepare their mind and body for a drug free birth, but some mums think this is utter crap (pardon my language) and so I will support them 100% down the epidural path - it's her birth/her choice I say! If you do want to go drug free though - start preparing, either by doing breathing/relaxation exercises or meditations. A marathon runner doesn't just run a marathon without training his mind and body and neither should a woman labour without preparing her mind/body. Its a powerful moment in your life - be ready! In America, it seems everyone is "lucky" enough to get an IV - in Oz and NZ, you would never do that to a woman unless she was at risk. Epidurals don't hurt - it's just the local that they put in before the epidural (local stings like a really angry ant bite!). Take care and all the very best xo

There was something going on in France a few months ago, a couple wanted to name their baby Metallica. They weren't allowed.

I about died laughing when i heard that, there's a girl my age that is named Metallica that i know of. I'm not lying at all.

It's so dumb when people want to name their baby something "different" and "Unique" by naming them something strange, or spelling it reallllllly weird. The name doesn't make the baby unique, the BABY and how the parents RAISE the baby makes it unique.

I have a sort of different name, Johnna (pronounced just like it's spelled, "John" with a "na"). I was named after my dad, John. He was the 4th one with his name in my family, and if i was a boy i was going to be the 5th. So they wanted to kind of keep it going, but not be stupid and name me like "Johnette" Or something. haha.

i can see someone naming their kid that though.

What support do you get after having a baby?

Hi, I have noticed that most of the people who are on this site are based in the States and was wondering what sort of support is offered to new mums over there... I have no intention of living over there but am just curious. I live in New Zealand and the support provided to new mums is amazing....
Everytime you have a baby, doesn't matter if it's your 1st or 10th you have the support and guidence of your midwife for the first 6 weeks. She will visit you in your home a few times a week then once a week until baby is 6 weeks. After that your bubs is refered to a Free service called Plunket. A registered Nurse sees you when your baby is 6 weeks, 3 months, 5 months, 9 months, 15 months, 2 years, 3 years & 5 years. they monitor your childs development and health and also provide any guidence or information needed. Between each plunket visit a Karitane Nurse will also see you and they also check development of motor skills and proved any info required on sleeping patterns feeding etc....
Along with the service is a Free calling number to Plunket Line that is availible 24 hours a day to answer question and provide you with info ideas and support whenever you need it.... (i called once when my daughter wouldn't sleep and they gave me some great suggestions to help settle her)
We also have a free calling health line Well Child who agian is availible 24 hours a day free of charge where a registered nurse is always available to asses any health concerns you have with your bubs and offer advice as to if medical attention need to be sought.
All our doctors visits for children under 6 are free through government funding and most prescriptions are funded to... some you have to pay a small portion for but most are free...
There is also PAFT parents as first teachers, which provided free training to anyone to help with things you can do to help your child learn and develop
Its pretty awsome support here in NZ!!!!
So whats it like where you live?
Our hospitals provied lactation consultants that can be contacted for advice and help at anystage whilst you are breastfeeding and any specialist you need to see are also free... my daughter has to see and orthopedic surgeon as she has congenital torticollis and our governement will cover all the costs involved... They also give you financial assistance for the first 8 weeks no matter what your income then if you earn below $64K a year as a family they will give you weekly payments to help with the cost of a new family... The more kids you have the more financial support you get....

I think that it should be compulsory worldwide to provide the sort of support we in NZ get for new mothers and young children/ families....
Thank you so much for all answering... it is amazing how differnt things are over there compared to here.... We don't pay anything to have our babies... Your midwife who you see through out your prengancy and for 6 weeks after birth is funded.... and additional specialist required at birth are free (i needed an obstatrician and 2 peadiatricians plus my midwife and 2 extras... horrid birth!!!) if a c-section is required its free, if the babys needs to go to neonatal intensive care its covered... How unfair that you are expected to pay for things like this especially when none of it can be prepared for as you have no idea what will be needed at the time...

I'm a new mom and I have a 24 hour hot line with a registered nurse that I can use. Its free through my insurance. There are also free lactation consultants through the hospital I gave birth at. You call them and they call you that day or the next between 2-4 p.m. If you schedule an apt. with them, you do have to pay whatever the insurance doesn't pay.

We paid 11,000 so far for our baby, because he was in the intensive care unit for the first two weeks. So, nothing else I describe is free! Its expected in my area (Omaha, Nebraska) that you go in to see the pediatrician every week for the first month and then every two weeks for the next. After that, it varies. Since our baby was in intensive care, we had 6 approved home health care visits that we could use for the first two weeks he was home. If my baby hadn't gone to intensive care, we were going to pay 2,500 to give birth in a hospital.

We make around 50,000 in our household a year and my husband works for a well respected company (Union Pacific Railroad). If we were lucky enough to make closer to 25,000 a year, we would have all our health care paid for through the government. The government would also have paid for formula, if needed, and the rental of a breast pump. Last year, we were students and could have had everything paid for and we would have lived more comfortably than we do now with our current income. That's why everyone complains about a health care crisis in the United States!!! We will be paying off our babies bills for a very long time.

NEW ZEALAND DESTRUCTION!!! Global warming, Volcanoes.?

Quick question for all you Kiwi's out there. My fiancee' and I are planning on moving out there in 4 years and something came to my attention. With all this talk on global warming, scientists have shown that if half of antartica and half of greenland melt, the sea level will rise 20ft. I'm curious to know what the sea level of new Zealand is and where I could find a map of it. I want to know how that will effect your beautiful country. Next question..
I'm from the U.S. and I'm well aware of Super Volcanoes. I passively watched a documentary on one such volcano in New Zealand a while back and was curious to know its validity as well. Which valcano is it? When is it due to erupt? Thank you.

We cannot predict when a volcano will erupt. however Volcanoes are easier to monitor than earthquakes. There are several different methods, but all of them are based on some geological reality. We think we understand some of the processes that go on before a volcano erupts. The problem is that eruptions begin from below, in regions within the crust, often far from the surface. The trick is to find out what those processes do at the surface before the eruption actually begins, and then to look for those surface effects.
http://vulcan.wr.usgs.gov/Vhp/C1073/scientists.html this site will show you how volcanoes are monitored. Unfortunately we are unable to really tell when or how the volcano will erupt and the severity of the eruption. It is almost like saying you will have a baby boy in three years.

Also there are a few super volcanoes in the world and there is almost no telling when they may erupt, all we can really do is respect them, keep a safe distance and hope for the best. I hope I helped you.

were not there every single day, but pretty dang often, were also going to be raising baby phesents to relese onto the property when they are adult. But the bunnies were thinking of getting two from the omish people up there. they will be kept in cages with all the nasesities they need. i was woundering what breed of bunnie is best outdoors? i am in michigan

How often will you be there? If you aren't going to be there at least every 48 hours, then I wouldn't do it. Plus if the SPCA found out, you could be caught for abandoning them, even though technically you haven't. They will even frown upon not being there every day. Rabbits can go down hill very fast, and not seeing them everyday means you can't monitor them. Plus, you can't really just stock them up with food and hope for the best, they will become obese if you do that, because they will just keep eating fattening pellets all day. Well, if you are raising them for meat then that is fine.

It is the same with the baby pheasants, they really need to be monitored. All breeds of bunnies are kind of the same outdoors. A hardy breed might be the best though, stay away from very fluffy breeds (like angora), very fragile breeds (like Belgian Hare) and very small breeds (like Netherland Dwarves). I'd probably go for something like Mini Lops, Himalayans, New Zealands etc.
