What to get for a baby shower?

dingding

I'm going to a baby shower for a co-worker in another department. She didn't want to know the gender ahead of time, so it's gender-neutral. I heard the baby's room will be "jungle" themed, but I think she already has all of that. Just looking for some ideas of things that a 30-ish working mom would definitely appreciate (~$50 budget), even if it's basic stuff.

Answer
Here are a few different ideas in your budget:

Baby monitor ($47):

Baby carrier wrap ($48):

Baby gate ($40):

Table seat attachment ($42):

Diaper disposal ($47):

Baby supplies?????????

Jessica

what all am i gonna need?? i have the main things, i just wanna make sure i am not missing anything. thanks!!

Answer
True 'needs' are very few indeed.

1. Breasts
2. A place for baby to sleep (your bed or a crib or a bassinet), plus appropriate bedding.
3. A carseat (if baby will EVER ride in a car.)
4. Diapers (cloth or disposible) and wipes (cloth or disposible.)
5. Basic clothing.
6. Basic health/hygeine supplies (mild soap, some place to bathe baby, towels, maybe some diaper rash ointment and infant tylenol.)
7. Some place to change baby (changing table or a clean pad or towel on your bed or the floor.)
8. You'll probably want some way to transport baby other than your arms (sling or carriage or both.)

Beyond that -- what you buy depends on your budget, your lifestyle and your preferences. I NEVER owned most of the stuff that many people here will claim you can't possibly live without (swing, bouncer, baby monitor, special swaddling blankets, boppy pillow, breastpump, etc.) Whether you will need them or not, I can't say.

I'm getting married in july and I need money saving tips badly.
For are 2 bed room home and we have a baby. Also I love things to look great. Lets just say I'm the kind of girl who can't go out of the house without looking like a Diva.

Answer
"Design on a Dime" is a great show to watch if you have champagne taste and a beer budget for your new house. Its on the Home and Garden channel :)

Also, consider NOT registering for a bunch of china you don't need for your wedding, and ask for donations that will go toward your down payment instead!

I agree with the other posts as well, the more you monitor exactly what you spend, the better you will be able to control it. Make sure your hubby's on board too, its impossible if only one of you are on board with the whole budget plan :)

Good luck & congrats - you can do it!

How can we reduce health care expenditures on baby boomer's medical needs next five years?

Rano S

I'm working on this topic, and would like to know exports', doctors' and individuals opinions? Please give me your opinions, thoughts, and possible solutions to reduce healthcare spending. Oldest Baby Boomers will retire next year, and this will be a big issue to national budget.

Thank you all for your help

Answer
My suggestion is to give them higher deductible plans. Usually they would be covered 100% or with a very little co-pay. If they are responsible for some of the bill they will limit their doctor visits. Don't make it too high or this may backfire.

Second, focus on preventative care. It costs more to fix a problem than prevent it. Give incentives to get checkups and eat healthy. This is hard to monitor, but let's hypothetically say that the government instead of paying ALL their premiums for medicare, they replace a small portion with vouchers for HEALTHY food. This can reduce a lot of medical problems by attacking obesity and heart problems.

What are some lizards that make good pets besides geckos?

on What Is the Best Baby Monitor?

E.K.M

I've had a leo before, but gave her away to my little cousin as a gift and geckos weren't really my type of lizards, but I do like leos, banded, and fat tails though, but what are some others that make good pets and why do they and please list more than just "bearded dragons" I know their great lizards and my cousin had one for years, but im interested in hearing about some others. I have a strong preference for agamids/iguanids, monitors/tegus and gila monsters/beaded lizards. What is on your list of "great pet lizards" and what makes them good pets?

Answer
Top ten best reptile pets besides leos and beardies.

10. Crested Gecko- Great, beautiful creatures with a friendly attitude.

9. Blue Tongue Skink- Large, amazing animals with a tameable side, and beautiful color pattern.

8. Iguana- Can grow to 6 feet +, Friendly when tamed animals, with a easy food budget, but sometimes pricy cage setups.

7. African Fat Tailed Gecko- Colidiscope skin patterns, with a friendly attitude towards all people. Usually always calm.

6. Anoles- Easy to care for, cheap, and minimum cage requirments.

5. Flying Geckos- Good calm animal, but do not like to be handled much.

4.Savana Monitor- A huge animal that should only be taken care of expeirenced reptile handlers. Good pet if you are though because of the size and personality of this animal.

3.Brown Basilisk- A swift, agile runner, the brown basilisk relies on lightning fast bursts of speed to attack and surprise its prey. A awesome, dragon like animal! Would make a very cool pet.

2.Chinese Water Dragon- Chinese water dragon babies that are only 4 or 5 inches long may be kept in a 10-gallon aquarium, but they will eventually need to be moved to a larger terrarium. Amazing color and very cool to watch.

1. Chameleon- A beautiful and exotic color changing reptile. They are very easy to tame, but could be a little pricey.

Hope this helps!

What age should i be allowed to shop for my own clothing?

ohsnapz797

soo...im 15 but my mom is really strict and i can't even buy simple jeans by myself. she monitors all my clothing...eventhough im an A student and if she let me shop by myself i would get things that go along and pertain to my own style. im greatful that my mom loves me...but sometimes i feel so stressed and worked up i want my own space. what do i do?

Answer
I'm a fifteen year old girl and fashion is my life! I love it! I have a $40.00 a week shopping budget and i get to use on what and where I want to! My suggestion to you is talking to your mom and letting her know that your not her baby doll and that she can't just dress you forever, but in the nicest most gentle way possibly of course(: I also suggest asking her if you can prove that you can shop by yourself, first by letting her come with you pick out all your own things create outfits and after you try them on and figure out what fits you and goes with your style going out to show her that you are totally capable of doing this and that the outfits are up to her standards! Next i would say you could go shopping by yourself and if you come home and she doesn't like what you bought, no because she doesn't like the style or the trend but if she thinks it is inappropriate or to "sl***y" then you can go back to the store with her and let her give you another chance to exchange it for something else like an alternate piece that fits the style and trend of the outfit that you were going for, but something she approves of! baby steps! I hope this works! because i have no idea what i would do if i couldn't shop and buy what i wanted!

Do I need a router to go with my cable modem for a wireless connection to my desktop?

JD

I am using a NetGear WiFi adapter on my desktop (budget build) with the Time Warner supplied wireless modem, and it works well, but I no longer want to pay the lease fee. I am reading good things about the Motorola SB6141 modem. Can I purchase just that modem to use with my wifi adapter, or must I get a router too?

I am open to getting the modem/router combo if I must or even a separate router and modem. What are some of the pros and cons? I am on a relatively slow connection: 3 megs from Time Warner, and I am relatively happy with it. Could a new modem improve my wifi connection (although that is secondary to saving money)? As long as I don't go backwards in performance I am happy.

Thanks--John

Answer
Yes, the SB6141 does not have wireless routing functionality.

Two types of Internet devices are commonly sold.

1. Combination modem / routers, often called gateways.

2. Stand alone routers which can be connected to a stand alone modem.

You'll either have to buy a cable gateway or purchase a standalone cable modem such as the SB6141 that can be connected to a standalone wireless router.

The second option gives you more versatility. Router speeds and features change much more frequently than cable modems do. If you have separate units you can upgrade one if you like.

I would recommend the Motorola Surfboard line.

GATEWAY:
Motorola SBG6580 Gateway (Combo Modem/Router) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007GZ2QKO/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B007GZ2QKO&linkCode=as2&tag=excharge-20

CABLE MODEM:
Motorola SB6141 Cable Modem (Modem Only) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007IMPMW4/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B007IMPMW4&linkCode=as2&tag=excharge-20

I have Cox Cable 50 Mbps Internet and have had good luck with a DOCSIS 3.0 Motorola SB6120. It is just a older model of the SB6141. Here is a review I wrote a few years ago when I bought it. http://isp1.us/reviews/motorola-sb6120-surfboard/

If you go this route, there are many WiFi routers to choose from.

It pretty much comes down to what features you want and how much you want to spend.

As far as the brand goes, the brand is not as important as the model. Some manufacturers release a good model but the next is crap. I would look at the Amazon reviews of models that interest you. Even if you don't buy from Amazon the reviews will tell you a lot about which models to avoid. Look for at least 15 or more reviews with a 4 star or better rating. Read a few and see if they sound like the particular model will work for your application.

For under $50, this Medialink is the most popular and highly reviewed model. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A3YN0Z0/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00A3YN0Z0&linkCode=as2&tag=excharge-20

As far as performance goes,

No router or connection type will change your 3 Mbps Internet speed. This connection bandwidth is shared by your entire home network via your router.

For example, If you have a 3 Mbps Internet plan and one user is utilizing 2.5 Mbps of the bandwidth to stream a Netflix movie that only leaves 0.5 Mbps for all of the rest of the users on the network.

Super fast wireless routers and connections permit fast transfer of files between devices connected to your home network (LAN), however Internet (WAN) speed is still limited by your ISP. The only way to improve your Internet speed is to upgrade your plan or switch to a faster ISP.

That being said,

All wireless connections will have a slower speed than a direct Ethernet connection.

Wireless signals are affected by many factors including distance, wall density, electrical interference, directional antenna range, etc.

All of these factors will affect your actual wireless range, speed and connection quality.

You should try to centrally locate your wireless router or gateway up high and away from dense walls and electrical and 2.4 GHz wireless interference such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, baby monitors, etc.

For stationary devices such as desktop computers or devices used for serious gaming or video streaming your best bet is a direct Ethernet cable connection. Ethernet is unaffected by wireless interference and will give you a rock solid, stable network connection.

If it is not feasible to run Ethernet cable the next best option would be a set of powerline network adapters http://isp1.us/reviews/netgear-xavb2101-powerline-adapter/

You plug one in by your router and one in the room where you need access and connect them to the devices with standard Ethernet patch cables. The network signals are transmitted over your existing home electrical wiring which will not be affected by wireless interference. There is still overhead in the connection but it is much more stable than WiFi.

ACTIVATION:
Most cable Internet providers use the cable modem's MAC address to activate the modem.

Every device that has a network interface has a unique MAC (Media Access Control) address. This is usually expressed in hexadecimal such as 10:25:A4:59:EF:1C

You'll have to call your cable provider with the MAC of the new modem so they can activate it on your account. The MAC address is usually printed on a sticker attached to the modem.

Good Luck...

Where Can I find Wireless Microphones to use in plays or musicals?
Q. I am in high school and I put on musicals in my back yard every year with my friends and family. This year we would like to purchase microphones that are very small but work very well. I have a VERY SMALL budget...where can I find cheap microphones (about four)?

A. wireless Mics are not cheap.
If they are then you get distortion. Kinda like baby monitors .
Does your school have them. Maybe you or a member of your school could ask another local school to borrow a set.
Or a music store. The ones that sell instruments not cds. Even a guitar shop has them.

What should i get my best friend for her baby shower?
Q. Alright so my best friend is having a little girl...shes the first of my friends to have a baby, and i want to get her something really nice. I'm willing to spend around 200 dollars on the gift.. id like to get her something practical but something thats still pretty special. Any ideas would be appreciated, my price range is a little flexible but i dont want anything too crazy over my budget!

A. I recommend getting her an AngelCare baby monitor that has a sensor pad that goes under the babies crib mattress and is sensitive enough to tell if baby is breathing or not. If it doesn't feel movement for 20 seconds the alarm will sound. My son is over 2 and we still use his every night. It is the most practical and usefull thing that she will ever receive.

My sister's baby is due in May and I know nothing about buying gifts for babies?

Q. Do family members normally give a gift to the mum when the baby is born, or only at the bridal shower. Also, as I am male, do I send a gift to the bridal shower?

And what are nice presents to give for the baby? I think maybe just a gift voucher for a baby store, what do you think?

Thanks clever people!
Yes, the baby did become before the wedding but I do mean baby shower. Thanks

A. a gift voucher is good. new baby means lots of purchases before and after the birth. i would pick a store that you know they will shop in. sorry not telling you anything you don't already know.

however, if you are fishing for an actual present idea, i'd go with something they don't have yet but need: crib, stroller, musical mobile, baby monitor, baby toys. depends on your budget.

what is the best heat mat for a corn snake ?
Q. a mat that doesn't over heat and won't burn the baby snake

my glass tank is 15 gal and what supplies should i get for the corn. like the decor substrates etc ?

A. habistat heat mats are pretty good, as are zoomed.
if you use a thermostat, it wont overheat. thermostats connect to the heat mat, while monitoring the temperature inside the tank, then depending on the type of thermostat you have, they can either turn on the heat mat when the tanks too cold then turn it off when the desired temperature is reached, or if you have a better thermostat they can keep a more constant temperature.
i think aspen bedding is good for corn snakes...or if your on a bit of a budget paper towels work fine. you could possible put something in for the corn to climb on, a small log (not just randomly picked up from outside, they could carry infection, buy it from a reptile shop) , maybe a plant to make it look nicer? There should be two hides, one at the warm end and one at the cold end, a water dish big enough for the snake to immerse itself in if it wants to, and possibly a thermometer to check the temperature now and again.
most of the decor for snakes is down to personal choice, ive just outlined some basic needs.
hope i helped (:
