Answer
I was worried about cot death when I first had my little boy, he's 5 months now and I don't think about it at all anymore. I got the Tommee Tippee sensor mat baby monitor at the start, it's brill. The mat goes under the mattress of the crib/cot and picks up on the baby's breathing, there's an alarm on the monitor itself and if it doesn't detect any breathing for 20 seconds it sounds, apparently it has helped reduce cot death numbers. I think Angel Care have a sensor mat monitor on the market too with a room thermometer on it.

Question about infant movement/breathing sensors?

LVEnPVM

I just moved my 6-month old into her crib at night (she'd been in bed with us before that) and I'm a nervous wreck all night because I can't monitor her breathing.

I'm wondering about the infant movement sensors now and I want to know if it's worth it to purchase at this stage since my baby moves all over the place in her sleep. I place her at one end and by morning she's clear across the other end, curled up in the corner. Won't this set off the alarm all the time if she's not right on top of the sensor mat?

Please share your experiences and let me know if it works for your 6+ month old baby. Thanks!

Answer
The risk of SIDS at 6 months old has decreased so much. If your baby moves around a lot then no its not worth it. It might go off in the middle of night and freak you out. We have used ours since my son was about 2 months and I am thinking about putting it away since he can now roll in both directions.Yes it will set off the alarm.

Ours beeped last night like it was about to go off. It freaked me out I ran into the room and my son was clear across the crib. I just shut it off.

My 2 month old refuses to sleep on his back. Any advice?

sweet_octo

I tried tricking him into sleeping on his back by letting him sleeping in my arms for 20-30 mins before laying him down. He'll sleep for a max of 2 hours before realizing he's on his back and wake up screaming. I've tried everything- swing/carseat/boppy, placing him on his side with a towel or blanket infront and behind him, I even bought a foam to make him feel snug, and giving him a little cereal. He rolled over at 2 days old and again at a week old and hasn't stopped since. I think placing the blankets and foam makes him feel restricted. I can place him on his back oneway only to find him facing the oppisite way when I check on him. I even found him in the corner of the bed on his stomach with one arm hanging off. When he's on his stomach I roll him back over onto his back only to him awaking up screaming, refusing to go back to sleep no matter how tired he is. I've read all the articles on SIDs and done the research. Is there anything I haven't tried that may work? Help
Sorry, I worded my question wrong. And, as unbelieveable as it may sound, yes my baby did roll over at 2 days and also a week old. Even the nurse couldn't believe her eyes when he was in the hospital for jaundice.

Answer
My son had jaundice when he was born and had to stay in the hospital after I was discharged for 3 days. They had him under the special light, on his tummy, in just a diaper pretty much constantly for those 3 days except for feedings. Needless to say, once we brought him home from the hospital, he HATED to be swaddled and would not stay asleep on his back. We made the decision to let him sleep on his tummy. He took a pacifier (shown to help prevent SIDS) and just made sure there was no loose bedding or anything. He was born in the Winter so those blanket sleepers worked great instead of a blanket.

My son is a healthy 21 month old even though he didn't sleep on his back like he was "supposed to." Babies usually start rolling over at 4 months anyway and some will roll on to their tummies no matter how you put them to sleep. I'm sure your baby will be fine! Just make sure there are no pillows or animals in the bed and have a monitor just in case. If you're really worried, they have a baby monitor that has a sensor mat you put under the bedding, if it detects no movement or breathing for 10 seconds, an alarm will beep! Good luck!

Baby registry items?

sweetundin

I am a first time parent and I might not think of some important things to put on my registry. I want to ask more experienced moms. What proved to you to be an absolute necessity?

Thanks

Baby shower is in one month, and my baby will arrive in 10 weeks!!!

Answer
Breast pump, bottles and accessories
Nappy change pad, and change mats
Nappy Bag
Nappies (as mentioned previously different sizes because they grow out of them quickly)
Books (used like a bible) - recommend On Becoming BabyWise (for sleeping routine), What to Expect in the First Year
Baby Clothes
Vests
Muslin Wraps
Baby Monitor - with sensor pad, and handset for parents room
Cot Mobile
Play gym for baby - use for tummy time, and baby to use to play when a bit older
A lightweight, easy to fold, reclinable pram
Cot sheets
Teething rings

I've heard many people are doing online baby registry's now, are you? There's one at http://www.eBabyCentre.com/registry.html

Good luck with everything, it's such a special moment!

What do you know about Baby Sensor Mats?

best baby monitor sensor mat

Fairy Dust

I am doing a little research into baby monitors. I have seen the sensor mat/pad which lies beneath the baby's matress. It goes off if it does not detect any sound/movement for 20 secs.
Now, a few concerns...
a) does it go off quite often in the night (scaring you half to death) but usually false alarms.
b) how does it sensor movement when baby is laying still? breathing movements? of which it would have to be very sensitive!
c) Do they really work?!

Answer
we had one with our daughter. it senses the breath movements. The only time ours went off was when she finally figured out how to wiggle off of it giving me a heart attack lol.

What average amount of items needed in beginning prepping for a newborn?!?

Theresa

Receiving blankets, burp rags, swaddling blankets, fancier blankets, bibs, etc.

Answer
sometimes it depends on the baby, but for any I would say that surprisingly few things are needed. it partly depends on how often you want to wash things.

I would recommend:
-1 place for the baby to sleep
-1 baby monitor (one with a sensor pad gives piece of mind)
-3 receiving blankets (I pretty much used the same things over)
-1 infant bath tub (one with it's own slant for the infant is easiest to use)
-1 baby lotion (the less perfumes the better)
-1 baby shampoo and body wash
-1 hamper (to put dirty laundry in)
-1 change table, pad & cover (if you can get one with a drawer it helps to keep everything in)
-1 box of diapers (OR at least 12 cloth diapers)
-1 diaper rash cream
-1 diaper bag (get 1 that comes with a travel change mat)
-1 breast pump (if you are nursing)
-1 can of infant formula (even if you are nursing, it's good to have for emergencies)
-nipple cream (if you are nursing it helps, it's also good to use on babies scratches as its ok for them to swallow it)
-1 thermometer
-2 pacifiers (if you use them)
-2 bottles (wide mouth if you are nursing, usually come with a pump)
-5 sleepers (at least, other outfits are more likely to be worn later)
-2 hats (at least)
-baby nail clippers
-baby Tylenol & Advil
-baby D drops
-baby hair brush
-3 infant towels (with hoods)
-2 blankets
-3 burp clothes (I never used them, but you will want more if the child is a puker)
-5 face clothes
-1 box of wipes OR at least 12 clothes for wiping
-1 diaper pail (it helps reduce the stink)
-1 bouncy seat (if you buy nothing else, I found this most helpful!
-1 infant car seat
-1 stroller (preferably 1 that fits the car seat)
-1 swing (you can get away with just the bouncy seat)
-1 floor mat (at about 2 weeks old you should start tummy time, a floor mat helps keep things safe and clean
-1 humidifier (especially helpful if you live somewhere very dry like Alberta)
-1 dresser (to put clothes & blankets in)

That is pretty much the minimum of what you want to have. a few things I found unnecessary where:
---burp clothes (I never used them, but some children throw up more)
---car window shades (I never got any, just put a blanket over the seat to block the sun)
---high chair (baby doesn't need it right away)
---bibs (I didn't use them, unless the baby drools a lot of throws up a lot, you won't either)
---toys (for a little while they won't be playing, so not a priority right away)
---too many clothes (you end up with a few favourite outfits anyway, and rarely wear other items)
---nursing pillow (I used it, but you can just as easily use a regular pillow)
---nursing cover (a blanket works too, but you might want it for going out)
---teething rings/gel (I haven't really used it)
---an infant toothbrush (I have it and use it, but you can use a face cloth to wipe their gums)
---nasal aspirator (I hate using it)
---pacifier thermometer (the nurses/doctors wanted the reading done under the arm)

Hope what helps a little!!
