Dwarf Savannah Monitor!?

BlueTongue

I have the Monitor, 7.5".. and you'll never guess 8 months old. I am experienced with keeping monitors/tegus/blue-tongues.. and this one is SO SMALL. I feed it till it gets full, his basking temperature is at around 100 degress, and has all the correct UV.. I seen on the internet where their Bosc is not growing. People blame them for not caring for it properly, which may be the case, but not in this case. Do you guys think Bosc can have runts? I have never seen this done before. Experienced Bosc Monitor owners answer only, please. No need in smart ass answers.

Answer
Sounds like it under-fed or indeed a "runt".

Read these 2 booklet we have written on rearing baby monitor lizards:

hope these help ...

Baby's sleeping positions...?

For the past few weeks ive been having disturbed sleep due to worry of my 6 month old baby girl.

As she gets into the most awkward positions in her sleep and it is terrifying me.

She is choosing her tummy a lot which i dont really like, but if i move her she gets in an even more awkward position even on her tummy with hands tucked under her tummy.

Its getting to a point where I'm constantly waking up to check on her and I'm actually feeling safer with her in bed with me so i can keep her still.

Any advice please?

Also is it really safe now that she is on her tummy?

(She has is able to roll onto tummy and back again for quite some time )

Answer
My daughter has been the same since around 6mos.

She flips on her tummy, hands under her belly, knees bent, bum in the air.

When she started doing it, I like you, was worried and couldnt sleep. But I realised I was fighting a losing battle. I even wasted my money on a sleep positioner which on the 1st night of using - she wriggled out of.

What sort of monitor do you have? We have the Tommee Tippee Suresound with sensor mat which monitors her breathing - so that set my mind at ease a bit. However, they are almost £100 - and I wouldnt think it worth it now oaying that much. Ours was a gift when she was born.

If she can roll both ways - she is safe. The incidence of SIDS reduces at 6mos which Im sure is your train of thought. She is just as safe in her cot as she is co-sleeping..

So advice - not much, just try to relax.

Is it safe - I believe so.

baby monitor?

dirty4dirt

Any suggestions for a decent one for under 100? The reviews I've read in the $50 range haven't been great but any suggestions would be helpful.
I was looking at just a traditional monitor. I would like to spend under $50. Its hard to go by alot of reviews online because most people live in subdivisions with alot of activity.. I dont. I live in the boonies hah.. so maybe interference wouldnt be as bad..

Answer
I have the Graco Ultra Clear II Monitor with Nightlight. It was about $29 and I've been using it for 10 months with minimal problems. It gets really good reviews considering it's priced so low. Once or twice I have gotten a little static sound from it but it went away quickly and only came from the part I keep downstairs (basically the part that is upstairs with the sleeping baby has never had that problem). I do a lot of product research before I buy and it seems when it comes to non-video monitors even the pricey ones have problems.

What Is a good Baby Monitor?

Pam

I've been looking on amazon for a baby monitor but it seems like all the reviews i read contradict each other. i was hoping someone could compare the experiences they had with baby monitors and talk about which brands they loved or hated

Answer
Hi Pam,

It depends on your budget and what you want from a baby monitor. Basically there are three ways of monitoring; audio, video, or movement sensing. Generally the cheaper baby monitors are just audio ones, and the more expensive options use video. For under $100, I can recommend the Angelcare Baby Movement and Sound Monitor or for a video monitor, the Levana Jena. For higher end baby monitors, the Samsung SEW-3037W and the Levana Astra are both good choices.

baby with fever any suggestions?

jameyfcs

our 6 month old had some shots today one of them being a flu shot and the others were normal 6 month shots.tonight she has a fever of 100.8 under arm pit.is this normal?we gave her tylenol. should we go to E.R . or any other suggestions?

Answer
100.8 is not a really high fever. I would give her .8 ml of infant tylenol every 4 hours or whatever the dosage says. It is very common to get a fever after shots. I have been through lots and lots of fevers with my kids. Anything under 104 usually is not serious. Just monitor her and make sure she is alert and eating, that is the biggest thing. My pediatrician was never concerned about a fever unless it went 104 and stayed there for more than an hour or 2, and or the baby is lethargic. Your baby will probably be just fine. If she is eating and giving you wet diapers, that is good.

best baby monitor out there?

i'm finally going to try and get my son to sleep in his own room soon, even though im really nervous about it. i don't want to do that until i get a really good baby monitor though. i had two in mind... either the safety 1st high-def digital monitor or the summer infant day and night handheld color video monitor. they got pretty good reviews so those are the ones im looking at. does anyone have any other recommendations or comments?

Answer
Honestly, you don't need a video monitor. The best one out there is the Angel Care Movement and Sounds monitor. It is about $100 and has a sensor pad under the crib mattress that senses for movement. We have used that one since our son was 4 weeks old! It let me sleep better because I knew that if something were to happen, we would be alerted by the monitor (it senses for breathing). In addition, I always preferred going into his room to check on him too (with the monitor on)...I liked watching him in person rather than through a monitor. Trust me, I was freaked that something would happen, and this monitor totally helped!

Best of luck!

EDIT: I agree with the other poster here, it is useless to see the baby, and there is no need to get to a baby before he/she starts to cry. There are many times when my son will move around (I can hear it through the monitor) and will even make sounds/cry a little in his sleep and then 30-60seconds later be back to sleep. If you always run in there at every move, you will end up disturbing their sleep and actually waking them up when they are actually not awake. There are times when you need to let them "fuss" (I didn't say cry it out) for a few min so that they can learn to go back to sleep on their own. My son is 10 months, and has been sleeping through the night since he was 8 weeks old. (With small interruptions while he was teething...he has 8 teeth and the top 4 came all at the same time). He will now sooth himself back to sleep if he wakes up...sometimes with his aquarium, sometimes his soother...sometimes he even sits up and plays around and then goes back to sleep...plus...when you are sleeping you can't look at a video monitor anyway...

Any good remedies for getting rid of a headache..?

Rachel

I've had a headache all day, and I want it gone :( but I can't swallow pills and I already took baby asprin in the morning, and I took some liquid childrens medicine almost two hours ago. but it still won't go away. it's at bay right now, like it doesn't hurt as much but it's still bothering me a lot. and I can feel it like behind my right eye. and tips or remedies are appreciated. thanks in advance!

Answer
IHave you seen an orthodontist/dentist to be examined for TMJ/TMD. Tension stress from your TM joint in your jaw can make you sickly with migraines if out of place even a smidge.I got it from a jolt to my head and the tmj muscles stretched out causing sickening headaches, face pain and ear aches. Please check even with your doctor about it.

Many things can trigger a HEADACHES/MIGRAINES: using your arm in an awkward way (bowling) when you don't normally do that, lack of food (skipping meals), head resting in a hairdressers sink, going to a concert with light show, video game screen with fast movements & flashing lights, staring in the light (sun) constantly on your eyes...etc.

You may want to check your settings on all your digital items that you are using. Each device you use has a warning that MANY COMPLETELY IGNORE. Go under your settings for your screen settings on your computer, laptops, televisions, monitors, digital games, etc. AND LOWER THE BRIGHTNESS ON THE SCREEN.

Also, don't forget that all these items are a heat source and depending on how close you are to the item you are using, you are affecting your personal body sources. (ie. flickering lights affect the eyes, laptops on laps affect fluids. etc.)

You may be completely dehydrated if you aren't drinking adequates amounts of water daily. Here's a guide to help you figure out how much water you require daily for your weight.

? Your Weight Times (.5) Equals Divided By 8oz (or 1 Cup) Equals # Cups of Water/Day

⢠150lbs x .5 = 75/8 = 9 Cups of Water/day
⢠175lbs x .5 = /8 = 11 Cups of Water/day
⢠200lbs x .5 = 100/8 = 12.5 Cups Water/day

If you take your medication with an extra caffeine drink, it will hit your system faster, but that only means enough to swallow the medication and wash it down. It does not mean drink an entire can or you will suffer from extreme caffeine withdrawal (rebound migraines).

1. I used to use a combination of medications which included 400mg Ibuprofen 4x a day with food. This takes the swelling and inflammation down. DO NOT exceed1600mg in one day and you may need prilosec for stomach protection as ALL ANTI INFLAMMATORIES are difficult on the stomach. ***You can use Tylenol with Ibuprofen and Aspirin watch for daily maximums & don't exceed.

2. Robaxacet is Tylenol (acetominophen) combined with methocarbonal (muscle relaxant)...this also comes with codeine on request from the pharmacist. This only relaxes any tight muscles around the pain and helps reduce some pain. You can use Robaxacet with Ibuprofen and Aspirin, BUT NOT Tylenol as it's already an ingredient in this pill.

3. Robaxacyl is Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) combines with methocarbonal (muscle relaxant)...this has a blood thinning active ingredient and isn't ideal for anyone under age 16 years or complications with blood pressure, ailments, etc. This both takes down the inflammation as well as treats the pain. You can use Robaxacyl with Ibuprofen and Tylenol, BUT NOT Aspirin as it's already an ingredient in this pill.
------------------------------...
4. Aleve is a Nonsteroidal Anti Inflammatory (Naproxen) which will helps reduce the inflammation, and as the inflammation decreases so does the pain; BUT you CANNOT mix this drug with any of the above mentioned safely.

5. Dynamint has been used on horses legs for years, but it does an amazing job on sore neck muscles. It's ingredients are Peppermint Oil, Eucalyptus Oil , Tea Tree Oil and Calendula Oil.

6. Deep Cold Gold is an alternative rub that works very well on tight aching tendons on your upper shoulders, neck and TMJ joints.

When I was 16 years old I had severe tension headaches that made the ligament behind my ear pop out like a big ole bump. The doctor prescribed a low dose of Elavil (amitryptaline) & it was gone within days. The Elavil in high doses is used for depression but they use it for car accidents because it relaxes the muscles from whiplash.

If you experience a headache with ANY LOSS OF WEAKNESS, SLURRING, IMBALANCE or FEVER, then you need to seek medical attention immediately for a consult to make sure there isn't something more serious going on.

Why are environmentalists going crazy over the new form of mining?

Maddie

I forget what it's called but they blow up the rocks waaaaay under the earth's surface to find oil somehow, and then they just collect it.. But environmentalists are going crazy because it affects the ecosystem
(which is false, it's a mile underground and can't hurt anything)

Answer
Some people respond more to political rhetoric and not factual information. They lack the ability (or motivation) to think critically.

1. Deep-well hydraulic fracturing does not travel far enough through the rock to affect or harm fresh-water supplies. Millions of fracturing jobs and thousands of field-monitoring tests have confirmed this.

2. Statistically, the chance of even minor water contamination from fracturing chemicals in properly constructed deep wells is less than 1 in 1 million. This is documented in various studies.

3. The height of any fracture produced by hydraulic fracturing is limited by natural lithostatic, hydrostatic, and tectonic stresses, as well as frac barriers formed by overlying layers of rock with different geomechanical properties so the typical fracture height is 100-300 feet above the wellbore.

4. It has been standard practice in the industry for decades to line well bores with heavy steel pipe which is cemented around the outside of the pipe. This pipe is placed and cemented to depths that go deeper than any freshwater aquifer in the area (this is the law in most places) before any deeper drilling takes place, especially any deeper drilling that is expected to encounter oil and gas.

5. Water contamination due to spilled industrial chemicals occurs rarely, but is always associated with accidents related to road transport, leaks of on-site surface storage, or during mixing and well construction phases. These failings are already regulated, in fact in the US these come under the full jurisdiction of the Environmental Protection Agency and do not have any exemptions from the Clean Water Act.

6. In the deep wells typical of shale gas no documented examples of chemical contamination from hydraulic fracturing have been found (except for surface spills at the well site or during transport).

7. Hydraulic fracturing has not been documented to increase the presence of methane (a harmless non-toxic gas that has no odor and must reach 5% concentrations to be ignited). Poor well construction from any type of well, including a hydraulically fractured well, a conventional oil well, or even a deep water well can cause methane contamination of shallow fresh-water aquifers. Most cases of methane in fresh water aquifers are the result of biogenic methane bacteria, and/or drawdown of water pressure in the water well that allows the methane that was already there to come out of solution and be desorbed from surrounding rock. Shallow coals and thin shales found in aquifer rocks are often the source of this methane and not associated with oil and gas drilling. High pressure air-drilling is sometimes used by the oil industry, as well as the water well drilling industry, and this can stir up sediment and activate bacteria in shallow fresh water zones. More care in this type of drilling would be appropriate.

8. Chemical disclosure of well fracturing fluids is already required by law in the United States and is not inappropriate. Full disclosure is required by OSHA and MSDS sheets are required by law to be available at the well site. Most states and oil and gas drillers are now disclosing these chemicals on public websites.

9. The first fracturing job took place in 1947. It is a little late to get upset about it now because nearly 90% of the wells drilled in the world use some application of this process. Nor is shale gas something new- the first shale gas well was drilled in Fredonia, New York in 1821. Shale fracturing research was first begun in the public sector by the US Department of Energy in the 1970's.

10. Most of the chemicals used in a typical fracturing job are found in your kitchen and bathroom. Polyacrimide is used in baby diapers and as a flocculant in public water treatment plants that process your drinking water. Glutaraldehyde can be found in hospitals, and household disinfectants. Ozone and chlorine dioxide are used in municipal water supplies to disinfect your drinking water. Ozone is also emitted by your laser printer. Phosphonate is found in detergents and used as a medical treatment for bone problems. Surfactants are nothing more than a technical name for dish soap. These are the five most commonly used chemicals in a frac job.

11. Fluid forced into the well that is not part of the flow-back water is never coming back. Shales are dessicated when they have generated gas and oil and the water is chemically bound to the shale. It is not coming out of the rock- it is now part of the rock.

12. The radioactivity of shale and water coming back out of a shale is well below Federal safety thresholds. Surface rocks such as granite are probably more likely to have dangerous levels of radioactivity than shales (and this is why I will not live in a house with a granite counter top).

Here is a well written paper explaining more about hydraulic fracturing:http://www.kgs.ku.edu/PRS/Fracturing/Frac_Paper_SPE_152596.pdf

Does anyone know where I can find a blood pressure monitor with an infant sized cuff?

Samsomsims

Automatic or manual (that comes with a stethoscope), that isn't ridiculous expensive, like less than $100? I have a 5mo old with very high blood pressure. I've looked everywhere :(

Answer
Wal-Mart has one that is wrist size. It is adjustable and might work. I have one and it is very accurate. It is an Omron 962 and is on the pharmacy aisle, about $63 including tax. You can buy a stethoscope at some pharmacies, don't think Wal-Mart has those, but some pharmacies have them for about $30.

If your baby has very high BP, you should take him to the ER and let the people in the hospital get his BP under control. You don't want him to have a stroke or heart attack.

Don't buy any other model even though they might be cheaper, they are not reliable. I have had 2 other models and they gave crazy readings, not reliable. If you decide to try it, be sure you only get the Omron 962. I have found it to be accuate. I also have an Omron that I use on my upper arm and have checked it with the one my doctor uses and it is accurate. My wrist Omron also gives the same readings.

Why were Gerry and Kate McCann never prosecuted for leaving their children unattended?

BARRY N

Under the Portuguese Penal (Criminal) Code it carries a maximum prison term of 10 years.

Answer
because the restaurant they were in was 100 feet from the apartment, they left a baby monitor, and they went back to check on the children every 10 minutes, they had a nanny check in regularly in between the times they werent checking in, it was a very safe part of town, and the children were sound asleep. it was no different then someone leaving their baby in one room with a baby monitor and doing something in the yard, they took every precaution and thought the children were completely safe. they already lost their child, that is far more then enough punishment. can any parent in the world really say they have never made a mistake? i really dont think so so how can you judge these people you dont know because they made one mistake and something horrible happened, they lost their daughter, throwing them in prison wouldnt help anyone.

How should i take care of my baby Western Painted Turtles?

best baby monitor under 100
on Best Audio-Video Baby Monitor for under $100 using your iPhone, iPad ...
best baby monitor under 100 image

KoopDaKill

I have two baby Western Painted turtles. What should be doing to keep them healthy.

Answer
Paints actually only get to about ten inches...

The rule of thumb posted by one poster is correct... however, a 50 gallon tank is a decent size for a SINGLE adult Paint. Since you have two, you'll want a minimum 75 gallon to give your turtles enough space. There's really no need to buy 100 gallon tank.

You need a submerged heater to keep the water at about 80 degrees, and a floating thermometer to monitor it.

Give them a nice habitat to live in... with plenty of artificial plants floating around to hide in, and something to lay on or under on the bottom of the tank-- like a rock cave, maybe or log.

They also need a dock to bask on with a heat lamp over it-- the lamp should maintain about 90 degrees. The lamp doesn't need to be on 24/7. I turn mine on for several hours a day-- some keep the lamps on all day and only switch them off at night. Either way is fine, so long as the turtles get some basking time each day.

For their diet, I recommend Repto Min floating sticks. You can get this at pretty much any pet store. Feed them the sticks once a a day, and and another food source once a day. Try fresh lettuce greens like romaine, kale, or mustard greens. Cherry tomatoes are great, too. And though adult turtles are primarily herbivore, the occasional meat is great in their diet. Mine get worms once a week and shrimp once a week. Try night crawlers, crickets, ghost shrimp, guppies, or shad. Also, the occasional cray fish.

I am thinking about getting a bearded dragon, how much would all the accessories cost?

David

I've been researching bearded dragons these last couple weeks and I am interested in getting one. I am an experienced pet owner when it comes to raising reptiles. I have raised snakes, turtles, and tortoises and am considering getting a baby bearded dragon soon. I want to set his tank up before i get him, any ideas on how much it would all cost?

Answer
First of all, you need this website: http://www.beardeddragon.org

You will learn everything you need there.

Secondly, DO NOT LISTEN TO ADVICE FROM THE PET STORE!! They don't know squat about caring for exotics, so make sure you know everything you need before you go, and don't let them talk you out of something you know to be true. That's why you need the above website!

Here is a basic list:

20g tank minimum. You'll need at least a 40g breeder when he's grown, so you may want to go ahead and get the bigger one. You can block off part of it if he seems intimidated by the size.
Craigslist is a great place to find cheap tanks.

Solid substrate for the bottom - Repticarpet, paper towels, non-adhesive shelf liner, or my favorite, tiles. Tiles are great. You only have to buy them once. They are super easy to clean and disinfect. They come in a lot of colors and styles so you can customize your look. They also help keep beardie's nails filed down. Sand, especially calcium sand, or any other particle substrate poses an impaction risk and should not be used for a dragon under one year old. And then washed childrens playsand is the only safe option. Please consider these cons about sand before you make a final decision, though.

*possible impaction risk
*have to keep buying it
*heavy
*hard to dump out for tank cleaning
*impossible to disinfect (it's important to disinfect any surface your dragon has pooped on because they do carry salmonella)
*stinks
**Absorbs moisture from poop, so that fecal bacteria is left behind even after you scoop out the solid waste. You dragon walks through this fecal matter and spreads it about his cage. He ends up living in what is basically a litter box.
**The left behind fecal bacteria can cause an increased risk of parasites

You can go real cheap here, pennies for paper towels or less than $10 for tiles.

Thermometer - A temp gun or digital indoor/outdoor therm with a probe on a wire. The stick on type are useless, and it's important that you accurately monitor your temps. The probe goes directly on the basking spot, and this temp should be 100-110. The cool side should stay around 80.
Wal Mart sells the Acurite Digital Weather Station for $12. It is an indoor/outdoor therm with the probe and works perfect for this application.

Heat bulb and fixture - Lowes and Wal Mart both have metal dome work light fixtures. These work great. The bulb can be just a regular household bulb. You might need to try different wattages to see which one gives you the temps you need. Usually a 75W or 100W will do.
Bulb <$1, Fixure: $10

UVB bulb and fixture - AVOID THE COMPACT COIL. Linear fluorescents provide the best UVB (besides MVB bulbs, but you can learn about that on bd.org) and REPTISUN 10.0 (not ReptiGLO) is the best fluor bulb on the US market. You can get the fixture at Lowes or Wal Mart for a reasonable price. Make sure the fixture does not have a glass or plastic shield over the light. Glass and plastic both completely filter UVB. The bulbs are way cheaper if you order them online from somewhere like Pet Mountain.
Bulb: $30-$60 depending on which type you get. The fluor needs to be replaced ever 6 months and the MVB just once a year so the yearly costs are about the same.
Fixture: 24" fluor fixture at Wal Mart for $8, or the work light fixture for MVB for $10.

Then you'll want some cage furniture, a basking rock or log, a hide if you like (although a hide isn't really necessary), some fake greenery to make it pretty. You might want to consider something to enclose 3 sides of your tank. Some beardies freak out about all the visibility, but some don't seem to notice. I used fake bamboo blinds to do this and it looked great.

You'll need a plan for your live feeders. Again, way cheaper to buy in bulk online than a few at a time at the pet store (and healthier too, no doubt). A 20 qt or bigger plastic tub does nicely. Cut a hole in the lid and hot glue or duct tape some screen on top for ventilation. You can learn all you need about caring for your crix at bd.org, and you can also learn about other feeders.

Here's a good website to tell you which veggies are good for your dragon:
http://www.beautifuldragons.503xtreme.co…

Okay, just as important, I will give you a list of things NOT to get, no matter what the pet store tells you!

*calcium sand
*crushed walnut shells
*any substrate that has particles
*stick on thermometers
*crickets bigger than the space between his eyes
*mealworms
*compact coil UVB bulbs
*heat pad
*blue or red night light
