How to make a Video baby monitor?

Can someone please tell me how to make a video baby monitor? The only problem is i dont have any fancy gadgets, like an iphone or ipad or ianything! lol.
i have an extra laptop and i have an old webcam. could this work to make a video baby monitor??
i want to be able to connect to it somehow from my laptop that iam currently using, like skyp or something??

I understand what your saying and thats why i dont want to spend any money on this. But if i can figure out a way to do it with stuff i have laying around i would like to see him, and not have to sneak into his room to see him. ( because yes i will be going in to look at him, i have from day one and i dont think that will stop for quiet awhile)

I can't help you with any of the technical stuff, but I wanted to say that video baby monitors are quite useless. Its one of those baby items that is totally unnecessary.

What's important is that you *hear* your baby wake up and cry for you. Its not important to *see* your baby - after all, you will be very, VERY tired yourself. Its not like you'll be up all night watching your baby sleep.

I do **NOT** care about your personal viewpoints on parenting, nor, if you think Baby Registries exist. Even I know baby registries exist! And they are called just that.

Why do you need a high tech monitor? Why, indeed do you really need a monitor at all?

Baby will sleep in your room for the first 6 months or so, so you can easily hear him/her. And unless your house is huge, you will have no trouble hearing baby when s/he cries.

If you feel you must have a a monitor, any inexpensive one will do the job. (And if you are set on a fancy expensive one, you don't register for it. That's not the kind of thing you'd expect friends to buy for you.)

My point is simply that new parents tend to think that they 'need' tons of stuff. And usually, once baby arrives, they learn that much of the stuff they have bought (or been given) is, at worse, useless, and at best, not worth anywhere near what they spent on it.
Babies cry when they need something. You will hear your baby cry. You really DON'T need a monitor to hear it. And for safety sake, (or for ease of breastfeeding) you will want baby to sleep in your room for the first 6 months or so, so you can easily SEE baby and don't need a video link either. They money you plan to spend could really be spent in other ways.

EDIT: So far as I'm aware, surgeons don't spend a lot of time studying infant care during their residencies. So how does the fact that she's a surgeon mean she automatically knows that you need a video monitor that integrates with an Iphone?

Does a deactivated iphone still function as an ipod touch?

I just upgraded from a 1st generation to 3GS. I want to take my old iphone and use it as an educational device for my son - animal pictures, kid's songs, kid's games, etc. I'd even like to use it as a baby monitor if it will still function on wifi. My AT&T dealer said not to hook it up to itunes because it is deactivated. What does this mean? Is the phone still useful?

I am 100% Deaf.. So from experience
A TTY is VERYYYYY out dated, it is hardly used now. We have Video Phones now and the VRS (Video Rely Services) They are provided by the government by agencies such as Sorenson VRS or Purple communication or ZVRS. All require a TV or Computer and a high speed internet hookup. That cost is your own responsibility to provide. (19inch flat screen 299$ best buy, Dell ultrabook 699$ internet ATT 56$ with cell serivce a month)
The alarm clocks very in price depending on what other features you would like it to have. a basic alarm only function can be found between 25-60$ the more fancy one that can attach to lights or smoke detectors and provide multifunction I have found to be about 200$
The door bells are an easy hook-up and can be applied to all lights or certain ones in the house each adapter is about 10$
The smoke detectors can be bought at about 65$ for each room you want one in, or you can have a universal system installed professionally for about 500$
Baby monitors can be attached to the alarm clock as a separate function otherwise I find them hard to use.
For the cell phone, I have VRS on my Iphone and a discount on my bill because I do not need a voice plan. unlimited texting. there is also face-time and other things like skype and google plus. Also with phones there is a nation wide program called Cap-tell (if the Deaf person can and willingly uses voise to communicate) that captions everything on a landlines phone(or cell phone is you have sprint) that the hearing person on the other line is saying

That being said,

A wireless router connects two separate networks and manages the traffic between them.

Dual band routers have multiple wireless radios enabling broadcast on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands simultaneously. Using the 5 GHz band cuts down on interference from cordless phones and microwave ovens.. Not all devices can use the 5 GHz frequency. Many laptops and other devices only operate at 2.4 GHz. Thus the need for dual band routers.

In any case,

You should try to centrally locate your wireless router or gateway up high and away from dense walls and electrical and 2.4 GHz wireless interference such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, baby monitors, etc.

Wireless signals, including 2.4 and 5 GHz, are affected by many factors including distance, wall density, electrical interference, directional antenna range, etc.

All of these factors will affect your actual wireless range. As wireless connection quality varies the connection speeds are renegotiated. The WLAN connection may start at 150 Mbps and end up at less than 10 Mbps or drop entirely.

Your best bet is always a direct Ethernet connection to the router, especially for fixed devices that don't need mobility. Ethernet is unaffected by wireless interference and will give you a rock solid, stable network connection.

Q. Of course, many of you will answer "no" to this question, but realistically a large chunk of Americans do it.

Put on TV all day for toddlers.
Hand over the iPads.
Hand over the smart phones with games.

This stuff wasn't around when WE were toddlers.

In my opinion, children, young young children shouldn't be exposed to the electronics at all. But you can't hide it, so maybe monitoring the usage to a time limit a day, or a week.

What's your opinion? Are you one of those electronic babysitters?

A. Im in Australia and I will happily admit that my nearly 3 year old gets our Ipad and our Iphone if I need to get something done, normally maximum of 30 minutes, most definately not all day! And its a distraction/something fun for them to do while mummy is busy and cannot play with them right away.

Once my jobs are done, it's right back to playing on the swings/drawing/painting/tea party's/building cubbies etc..

Q. I have been having contractions for weeks, almost all day just at random times. Today they are in my back too, I thought only real contractions could be felt in your back, not BH. Last night I had to go to L&D because the baby had not been moving around, but they said everything was fine, however contractions were showing on the monitor. Do Braxton Hicks show on the the monitor too?

A. Time them for an hour, if they're occurring consistently and lasting about 1 minute in duration, then they might be real labor. After timing them call your doctor for advice.

You can do some things to help labor along. Remember to drink plenty of water to prevent labor stalls and slow labor. Walk alot, rotate your hips slowly while standing, do squats while holding on to something sturdy to help you balance and get some good rest too if you can. Walking alot will allow gravity to help speed your labor, hip rotations and squats will help your pelvis to open and make it easier for the baby to transition to the birth canal.

Write down the starting time when your stomach tightens.
Then write down the time it stops. (How long was the contraction)
Doctors will ask you how close your contractions (from beginning of 1st contraction to the beginning of the next contraction) are and how long they are lasting.

Q. i'm almost 38 weeks prego and i woke up last night with awful cramps and they kept getting worse so i called my dr when they opened and they said to come in so i did and they had me on the monitor and it showed me having ALOT of regular contraction (like 6 within 20 mins) but my cervix is still only at 1 cm. does anyone know whats going on? according to the monitor, im in labor but my cervix says otherwise. any answers are appreciated! thanks!

A. Sounds like early labor. There are some things you can do to help labor along. Be sure to drink plenty of water to prevent slow or stalled labor. Walk alot to allow gravity to help things progress. Squats and slow hip rotations will open your pelvis and make it easier for the baby to transition to the birth canal.
