you could do skype. if you have a laptop, point the camera at the baby and use your phone to make a video call

Hi Taylor,

Yes, I believe we are (too) dependent on life simplifying devices. I've bracketed the word 'too' because I believe there are some devices that add to daily life stresses and yet have a place in our life style.

Take Communications:
I guess the ability to be able to communicate with and actually see the person you are communicating with (Skype) is really a marvelous experience. (My daughter lives in Dublin Ireland and I live in Perth Western Australia, so we connect frequently using Skype).

If we look at 'e-mail', it can be seen as a 'blessing or curse'. A blessing for the speed of sending messages and receiving replies'. A curse for people who work, because in today's business climate where time = profit, many senders expect a prompt reply and this increases the stress and work-load of the recipient.

Home Appliances:
Again, the speed of preparing meals, boiling water, cooking and cleaning all are made possible through the use of modern devices.

The drudgery of laundry compared to a time before the development of 'washing machines' is a boon to those who have to do the laundry.

Devices that help to monitor that a baby is sleeping safely, that help people with 'sleep apnea disorders' offer an early warning in the event of something going wrong.

Similarily, devices that provide an 'early warning' system for the elderly who live alone or who are impaired in some way, provide a measure of early warning and not least, comfort for their families.

In the home: Smoke detectors are essential safety protectors.

I want to use my cell phone with my laptop as a baby monitor for my newborn so that I can set the laptop up with the webcam on the baby & then I can watch it on my cell phone. Something similar to Skype but not Skype because it won't work with my phone. At least I can't figure out how to. Thanks!

gmail has video chat similar to skype. but then like skype, you'd still have to teach your baby to hit the "accept call" button when you call into your laptop.

Do you mean only adaptive gadgets and gizmos? Many of us don't use a lot of those.

Some of these are not "tech", but here is a fairly compleat list of things that some Deafs use.

videophone-- aka VP or VRS (has flashing lights attached)
we used to use TTY, but no one uses those anymore
"video chat" (the very newest portable VP-like device)
Skype
internet-- especially for news
e-mail
text messaging
instant messaging
vibrating watches
vibrating pagers
vibrating timers
vibrating beds
flashing timers
closed caption
CART for meetings
doorbells and phones hooked to lamps or lights that flash
front door monitors (can see who's outside)
extra rear-view mirrours on cars (required in some states)
flashing or scented smoke detectors and radon detectors
flashing baby monitors
flashing emergency weather radios
flashing burglar alarms
some wear a LifeAlert pendant
my church has HUGE monitors
more and more intersections have a flashing white light for emergency vehicles
those who can hear a bit often use hearing aids
those who can hear a bit use amplified telephones

Does anyone know of a cheap alternative to high priced nanny cams?

The reason I'm asking this question is because we are getting ready to move into a bigger house. My children's rooms will be upstairs, and I have MS so stair climbing can be very hard on me at times. I just want to be able to check on the kids from time to time without having to climb the stairs 50x a day. I've been looking into baby monitors as a cheap alternative, do you think that is the cheapest alternative? Thanks
Ahh webcams, that would work!! We do have two computers!! Thanks for the suggestion

You might be able to do something with Skype - that would allow you to monitor via a webcam and also talk to your baby.

If you were to add a special smoke detector, door bell lights, vibrating alarm clock, TTY, and other technologies, how much would that cost?

I am 100% Deaf.. So from experience
A TTY is VERYYYYY out dated, it is hardly used now. We have Video Phones now and the VRS (Video Rely Services) They are provided by the government by agencies such as Sorenson VRS or Purple communication or ZVRS. All require a TV or Computer and a high speed internet hookup. That cost is your own responsibility to provide. (19inch flat screen 299$ best buy, Dell ultrabook 699$ internet ATT 56$ with cell serivce a month)
The alarm clocks very in price depending on what other features you would like it to have. a basic alarm only function can be found between 25-60$ the more fancy one that can attach to lights or smoke detectors and provide multifunction I have found to be about 200$
The door bells are an easy hook-up and can be applied to all lights or certain ones in the house each adapter is about 10$
The smoke detectors can be bought at about 65$ for each room you want one in, or you can have a universal system installed professionally for about 500$
Baby monitors can be attached to the alarm clock as a separate function otherwise I find them hard to use.
For the cell phone, I have VRS on my Iphone and a discount on my bill because I do not need a voice plan. unlimited texting. there is also face-time and other things like skype and google plus. Also with phones there is a nation wide program called Cap-tell (if the Deaf person can and willingly uses voise to communicate) that captions everything on a landlines phone(or cell phone is you have sprint) that the hearing person on the other line is saying
ummm thats about it from what I can think of. Other wise for appointments and class and college stuff like that and for more direct communication I use a ASL (sign language) interpreter.
There are also High power hearing aids, cochlear implants and the BAHA (bone anchored hearing aid) if you want to try and "restore" some hearing, or use residual hearing you may have. but note these methods are case to case and are not always effective and can fail
