How can we keep my elderly grandmother (who has alzheimer's) in bed at night?

Steph

We need a safe way to keep her from getting out of bed. She's broken 2 bones in the past 6 months due to getting up at night and slipping on the hardwood floors. Sleeping medication is out of the question, and we already have bed rails, a baby monitor, and motion detector.

Answer
Unfortunately in most nursing homes they have to use restraints to prevent elderly people from getting up and injuring themselves.

Is salmonella something i should really be concerned about?

Gigi

I have a baby pet turtle. The other day i was siphoning his tank and i got some water in my mouth. I quickly spit, brushed my teeth, and used mouth wash...but is it possible that this could be a cause of salmonella? I woke up feeling sick. I've had diarrhea and continuous stomach pain. That's it though. Should i be really concerned and go to the hospital?

Answer
Turtles very often carry Salmonella. Usually, Salmonella does go away on its own though, so give yourself some time. And very often it is not treated with antibiotics even if you do go to a doctor.

Occasionally though, the Salmonella infection is severe and sometimes people do wind up in the hospital (usually the elderly or the very young).

Monitor how you are feeling and if it lasts longer than a few days or you develop blood in the stool, then go see a doctor.

Do you have a TTC success story to share with me?

DH and I have been TTC for the past 11 cycles now. I'm currently on CD 7, waiting to O. Anyway, I have been feeling pretty low lately. I was wondering if there are women out there with TTC success stories/blogs/journals online to share with me. I don't want to quit, but need lots of inspiration to continue on this journey.

It would mean so much to me. Thanks a lot.

Answer
Hi Nadia ... yeah, similar story. I'm now a year into charting and last month was the worst - really sad, depressed about it all, as I have 3 pregnant friends right now, and it was so easy for them. So, I sent a teary e-mail to my friend because I remember her trying for 2 years. She told me that the first month they used a fertility monitor, they got pregnant! I'm going to try that this month for the first time -- hey we all need to keep our hopes up, eh?! Maybe think about using OPKs which are pretty cheap online (around $0.85 each test if you buy 30). I'm on day 4 waiting to ovulate, so let's keep each other posted as we go through this one! Best of luck : and baby dust *~*~*~*~*~*

Teens: Is it weird if I am always reading parenting blogs and articles?

EcoGurl

I am also looking in the Parenting section of Yahoo Answers too. I just think it's interesting the different theories people have about raising kids, and I also want to be prepared if I want kids. I'm 16.

Answer
I don't think it is weird at all! I did the same thing when I was your age and I'm even doing it now, to keep up with trends because my children are starting to talk marriage as adults!

For me, my interest has always been genuine, as yours seems to be. I have always wanted to be the best mom. Now I want to be the best mom-friend to my grown kids and their special people. When the time comes, I want to be the best grandma to our little ones. It is, indeed, interesting how people raise their kids in all sorts of ways and have different beliefs and methods for dealing with challenges. You sound like a very insightful person.

Want some advice? Don't stop! You are learning the most important stuff you will ever use in life, from the best teachers. Most of all, you're reading! (Busted! I'm an English teacher!) When the time comes for you to have kids of your own, you will have a very good foundation for learning more through experience. You'll know what might happen if you do this or that, and you'll make informed decisions. Your friends who are not reading up on this stuff will come to you for advice, which is a lot of fun! Maybe you won't be fearful of the crazy things that happen to all parents at one time or another; wouldn't that be great?! Confidence in parenting is very important, since children derive their sense of safety from parents who are calm and can deal with life without freaking out.

That all said, one thing I caution you about is monitoring your feelings about having kids when you are so young. It is great that you want to be a parent: you're learning about it and you're taking the responsibility seriously. If you aren't very careful about what is going on in your thoughts, though, you may become a parent way too soon. That is not a good thing at all--not for you, the other parent, or for a child.

So enjoy learning, but be sure you are not "gah gah" for babies. I can speak from experience. I have sons and daughters, and I can't imagine my life without them all. When they were little, I wished they were born with pause buttons! It is much better to be a parent who has earning power and some life experiences than to be a 20-year-old parent in a bad marriage without a college education, a steady job, skills for the workplace, or a way to provide for the child you spent your childhood dreaming of having someday.

Check list for baby registry?

Q. I am going to register soon for my 1st baby shower. I know the basic things I should be registering for; crib, stroller, etc. But what are some items that are sometimes overlooked? Do I really need one of those bassinet things? Do people really use them? Should I register for a jogging stroller or is that something you're supposed to buy yourself later on? I just need help with a checklist or something lol

Answer
I do know a cradle was a waste of money for my daughter. She hated how "open" it was I think. And wanted to be snuggled. Than again, Im a strict believer in co-sleeping for the first month or so at least. Maybe a co-sleeper for in the bed with you, you could add. Depending on how you feel about that. I breastfed my first, and I wish I would have had something like that for her. So, Im getting one this time.

Where can I find information on what are considered good baby products?

Mamamia121

I am trying to register for my baby. I am so confused. There are 5 different brands of infant/newborn bottles, 15 different brands of baby monitors, 3 brands of infant care products. How do I know which is the best? I am very overwhelmed. Please help.
None of my friends have babies. My sister-in-law has two children but they are 7 and 4. This would be foreign to her.

Answer
Ask friends, family, coworkers, etc. what products they like and dislike and why and that should help you make a choice. Be sure to save receipts and shop at "return" friendly stores just in case you find you don't like a product. Target tends to have nicer things but I find they can be a bit of a pain when returning things sometimes. Wal-Mart has a much more lenient return policy.

If you want to e-mail me questions about products you're unsure of I'd be happy to share my experiences with you. I have a 2-year old and a 6-month old and I think I've tried it all! I went through the confusion with my first and got a lot of things I didn't like or didn't use/need.

Good Luck!

How do I use an old router as a wireless adapter?

Nathan

We recently moved, and our desktop PC is in a room that doesn't have any access for the internet, and the closest connections we have are on the other sides of the house. Is there a way i can use an old router as an adapter of sorts on my desktop so i dont have to run a LAN connection all the way across the house or pay for an adapter?

Answer
Depending on the router model, you might be able to configure it as a wireless bridge, http://howto.cnet.com/8301-11310_39-57529336-285/reuse-an-old-router-to-bridge-devices-to-your-wireless-network/ but for the bother, power consumption, performance, etc. You would be better served with an inexpensive USB WiFi adapter.

It is easy to add WiFi to a desktop. You can get a wireless adapter for your desktop PC, they are very inexpensive. Many are under 10 bucks. http://www.amazon.com/s/?_encoding=UTF8&tag=excharge-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957&field-keywords=wireless%20adapter%20for%20desktop&url=search-alias%3Daps&sprefix=wireless%20a%2Caps%2C377 There are two types, the easiest is a USB that just plugs in, the other is a card that involves opening the PC and installing in a card slot.

Unless you specifically need a wireless connection, I would not recommend it especially for a fixed device such as a desktop PC.

Wireless signals are affected by many factors including distance, wall density, electrical interference, directional antenna range, etc.

Wireless connection quality also varies and there is overhead involved in the transfer such as the encryption and decryption of the data used for wireless security.

You should try to centrally locate your wireless router or gateway up high and away from dense walls and electrical and 2.4 GHz wireless interference such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, baby monitors, etc.

For serious gaming or video streaming your best bet is a direct Ethernet connection. Ethernet is unaffected by wireless interference and will give you a rock solid, stable network connection.

If it is not feasible to run Ethernet cable your next best option is to use powerline network adapters. I wrote a review here: http://isp1.us/reviews/netgear-xavb2101-powerline-adapter/

Good Luck...

How do you send internet to other devices, using a computer?

Vanessa

We get internet in one spot in our house with our computer, but I would like to know if there is a way to send it the internet to other devices like home theater systems, and i-pods from the one computer.

Answer
It is possible, however often not cost effective or the best solution.

There are methods such as Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). You can set up ICS on a PC with a Internet connection and connect it to another PC or other device. This requires two network cards in the first PC. The Internet connection can be Ethernet or WiFi. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/using-ics-internet-connection-sharing. This method also requires the first PC to be active any time you need to access the Internet on the second PC.

The best solution for your application is to just add a wireless router. http://www.amazon.com/s/?_encoding=UTF8&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957&field-keywords=wireless%20router&url=search-alias%3Daps&sprefix=wireless%20ro%2Caps%2C490&tag=excharge-20
This is a efficient way to share a single Internet connection with multiple devices. The router can connect to your devices via Ethernet cables or using WiFi (wireless) connections.

Many people would be likely be surprised at how many active connections their wireless router has. I have dozens. Cell phones, tablets, iPods, game consoles, laptops, desktops, ROKU boxes, Internet enabled devices such as TVs and audio receivers, and the list goes on.

That being said,

Go here http://speedtest.net and test your Internet connection speed.

This is your Internet speed. No wireless router, or connection method can make it any faster.

If you are going to have multiple users or simultaneous devices such s ROKU boxes to do HD streaming such as Netflix, then you'll want a minimum of 10 Mbps or faster.

Your Internet bandwidth is shared among all of the users of your LAN. So any bandwidth others are using will be deducted from the total WAN (Internet) bandwidth that is available to you.

In simple terms, the more users you have the more speed will be required. Streaming video, such as Netflix and Hulu require a lot of bandwidth. Here are the minimum recommendations from Netflix. https://support.netflix.com/en/node/306

The only way to Improve your Internet speed is to upgrade your plan or switch to a faster ISP.

WIRELESS ROUTERS:
Wireless signals are affected by many factors including distance, wall density, electrical interference, directional antenna range, etc.

All of these factors will affect your actual wireless range. As wireless connection quality varies the connection speeds are renegotiated. The WLAN connection may start at 150 Mbps and end up at less than 10 Mbps or drop entirely.

2.4 GHz WiFi connections also experience interference from microwave ovens and cordless phones which interfere with the 2.4 GHz band.

Dual band routers have multiple wireless radios enabling broadcast on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands simultaneously. Using the 5 GHz band cuts down on interference from cordless phones and microwave ovens.. Not all devices can use the 5 GHz frequency. Many laptops and other devices only operate at 2.4 GHz. Thus the need for dual band routers.

You should try to centrally locate your wireless router or gateway up high and away from dense walls and electrical and 2.4 GHz wireless interference such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, baby monitors, etc.

Your best bet is always a direct Ethernet connection. Ethernet is unaffected by wireless interference and will give you a rock solid, stable network connection.

If it is not feasible to run Ethernet cable the next best option would be a set of powerline network adapters http://isp1.us/reviews/netgear-xavb2101-powerline-adapter/

You plug one in by your router and one in the room where you need access and connect them to the devices with standard Ethernet patch cables. The network signals are transmitted over your existing home electrical wiring which will not be affected by wireless interference. There is still overhead in the connection but it is much more stable than WiFi.

Good Luck...

Im going to be a first time mom & my baby's nursery is on a different floor in my house. Im looking for the best portable baby monitor, possibly a picture one. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Answer
I would go for a basic sound only monitor. When I was setting up my nursery we bought a motion and sound monitor. I found it to be useless for a new born as the baby was too small to set it off. It needed an adult or something bigger to set it off as it needed big movements (a hand waving in front of it.) I have one by fisher price that came with 2 speakers and the base. It is really good and picks up all sounds (it is so sensitive that it picks up the grand father clock chiming in the dinning room!) I love it. It only cost us about $80 from baby target.

Can you use a different baby monitor and receiver?

yournamehe

The transmitter on my baby monitor is going bad. Can you use a different transmitter and receiver so long as they are the same mhz? What if they are two different brands?
Just because its a baby monitor does't mean I'm using it to monitor a baby so if anyone feels the need to preach about me not wanting to buy a new set save it for when some one actually ASKs for your opinion. (not you rich, but I'm sure you've seen the people I'm talking about at yahoo answers).

Answer
Your best bet is to buy a matching pair. They are fairly cheap, but would work better, since they are made for each other to the company specs.. When you are thinking about the safety of a baby, for me, price is not important.!!

What is a baby monitor and how it works?

Amina L

I have an elderly client with this baby monitor. Is it possible to move it just like any other electronic by unplugging it and plugging it in another room? So that if I move from room to room I can still monitor that person. I do not want to mess with it by taking it off without knowing anything about it.
I would like to plug it in another room where I can turn on light and read, not to disturb the client and still hear hear her via the monitor.

Answer
A baby monitor can be 1 way , 2 way, an now they even have one with a camera attached. It usually has a base that you keep with the baby and a hand held you can walk around with. The 2 way allows you to hear the baby and speak back if you want. They work really well and its a great way to keep track of babies and small children while in another room or doing house work.
I have used these many times working in healthcare having elderly patients.

Answer
I love the Sony sound sensor baby call. It's voice activated so you don't hear the static. You do have the choice of listening to everything though. I bought a second one for my 3 yr olds room since I can't hear her if she calls out. They are only $35.00 at Target, great buy.

Can your neighbors listen in on your phone conversations with a baby monitor ?

Lady

If you're on your cordless phone in your home? I've heard that its possible for neighbors with baby monitors to do this to their neighbors, and I wouldn't think this would work, unless my cordless phone acts as a monitor.

Answer
It's possible if the phone and the monitors work in the same broadcast frequency.

Most do not, however. Modern cordless phones operate in the 2.4ghz wavelength, and older ones operate in the 900mhz wavelength (the newest ones operate in the 5.2ghz wavelength, but don't worry about those).

Most baby monitors work in the 300-900mhz wavelength, so a few of them *can* pick up on older cordless phones, but those that do are few and far between... especially becase every phone and monitor is coded to only pick up a very specific frequency around their specified range... so crosstalk is less likely.

I have a fisher price baby monitor with 2 receivers but one was dropped and broken. If I get a different brand will the fisher price monitor work with it on the same channel?

Answer
Probably not. Baby monitors work on three different frequency bands, and even withing the same band use different channels and different ways of matching up to each other.

How bad is it to not sterilize bottles or water for infant formula?

best baby monitor babycenter image

Susan S

I have a 9 week old daughter who I breastfeed but supplement with formula 1 oz to 3 oz daily. I JUST READ at BabyCenter.com that the water is supposed to be boiled first when making powdered formula but we've NEVER done this. We use filtered tap water. I also never boiled her bottles in water before first use -- only washed them in hot soapy water. My daughter has been healthy. But what have I put her at risk for?

I can't believe this would be so important that no one told me I had to do this. Is sterilizing water that important or just another suggestion out there?

We have community water ... a well that feeds the community and is monitored by a private company. We use a filter on our tap too.
I am waiting for a call back from my pediatrician...
I supplement due to a low milk supply. Yes, I pump, using a Medela Doubl Electric Pump. I also take Fenugreek and Blessed Thistle. Please just answer the question.

Answer
No you haven't put her at risk. My baby's doctor told me that giving her regular water from the tap helps build up immunities. I was using nursery water for the first few months and still do here and there. I didn't boil my bottles either just washed them in hot water as well. So far she seems to be doing fine no problems. I think its just a suggestion to sterilize things. I had a friend who sterilized everything that had to do with her baby for the first year. That baby is now allergic to everything and is always sick.. If your really worried about using tap water just buy Nursery water with added Fluoride. Hope this helps

When should a baby start sleeping alone in a bedroom of his own?

Greek_Warr

Answer
My son is 7 months old and some time for naps he sleeps in his room in is crib but at night......he is in our bedroom in his playpen. I have read on my favorite childcare website Baby Center [ www.babycenter.com ] that doctors say that baby's can sleep in there own room as of the first night home from the hospital. Also, that after 6 months you do not need to use a baby monitor. That is what the experts say but..........

I have tried putting him in his own room at night and I freak out. Mind you I am very deep sleeper, my husband usually has to wake me up for the baby. So I am paranoid. My husband on the other hand has no problem with letting him sleep in his room as long as the monitir is on. SO pretty much there is a difference of opionion.

This is what I think, has your child had any problems sleeping? has your child given you any reason to give you cause for alarm? If No, then the answers is when YOU are ready. You need to be able to get a full nights rest [or you know the best amount you can get] without worrying about your little one.
If yes, wait until those problems resolve themselves first.

But, a litte unsolicitated parental advice that I am just learning......The longer you wait the worse it is going to be. Not just for you but also for your little ones. Babies are learning so much everyday at night they want to sleep where they are comfortable and change leads to long hours of crying, sometimes.

Just be prepared for whatever you chose to do. Look at the website if you get frustrated, they have hundreds of articles when it comes to children and babies sleeping, eating, dressing, walking, teething, gas problems, etc. and where and how on those things.
Good luck.
