Now then, is it my motherboard, cpu, or video card?

clipjammer

Ok, with the help of you guys I have determined that my PSU is fine. I tested it in another computer a little bit weaker than mine. It got everything up and running fine. Next, I tried putting the PSU back in the computer with the possibly fried mobo. This time I took the vid card out and plugged the monitor cable into the onboard video. (I just wanna see the BIOS baby!) Still nothing, the feared "Black screen" of my monitor showing no response to the computer disheartens me. Next I tried putting in a weaker video card into the mobo. Still nothing. Now, if my mobo is fried, it won't utilize the video card and gimme a BIOS output right? Now, the cpu isn't in charge of putting out a video output, so if I take that out and still nothing gives me a BIOS screen then it is my mobo and I should look into purchasing a new one? I have a 2.66ghz cpu, 1gb ram, 2HDDs 100gigs total, DVD+-RW, 256mbRadeon9550 Video Card, 500watt PSU, ATX case, can anyone recommend a cheap (under $100) motherboard?

Answer
to be honest with you since i dont have the pc in my shop its gonna be hard to diagnose but im gonna go out on a limb here and say this.

if you have no screen at all and the computer beeps. then you COULD HAVE a bad monitor or cable or even a bad vid card. however it sould also just be a bad setup in the bios itself. id try to do like the other guy stated. if the computer will show you a bios then try to reset it all back to default.

if all you get is a black screen and no beeps and no lights on the drives at all then dude i hate to tell you this but its time to get a new mobo. that puppy is cooked.
if you get a short beep then long beeps then short again then its the memory most of the time.
a long beeeeeeeeep menas you have a cpu problem(either its cooked or not getting power)
however as i stated if you have no screen at all then more than likely you will need a new mobo.
also please note you may need to dump it all. the mobo the cpu and the memory.
sometimes a bad power supply(or one to small) can cause a computer to work but will slowly kill the thing. for instance if you have a 250 watt psu and runing 2 hdd 1 gig and 2.66 gig chip then its too little
however you stated you have a 500 this should be sufficient for oyur neeeds. id still have it checked out by a pro to see if it has any problems though. it could be a 500 and still be pushing only a limited amount or be getting to hot.

now about a new mobo. id check out tiger direct or global for a cheap one. plenty of stuff for the budget minded that still kick ass.
good luck dude.

I wanna give birth under water. Is it true that one feels not very much pain or no pain at all?

Answer
Most people find great comfort and repose with water. Perhaps because we begin our lives surrounded in liquid in the womb, this basic familiarity stays with us throughout our lives.

Human beings are comprised primarily of water, and many special characteristics we have link us to aquatic mammals, perhaps carrying the memory of a time when the human species had an âaquatic interlude.â A three-day old fetus is 97 percent water, and at eight months the fetus is 81 percent water. By the time a human has grown to adulthood, the adult body is still 50 to 70 percent water, depending on the amount of fatty tissue.

Human beingsâ natural alliance with water is best witnessed in human babies who can swim naturally and easily long before they learn to sit up or crawl. During their first year of life, babies will calmly and happily paddle underwater, gazing around with eyes wide open. When they need to breathe, they naturally paddle toward the surface of the water before taking a breath. Babies instinctively know not to breathe while their heads are still submerged underwater. They wait until they reach the surface of the water before breathing. It seems to be only later that humans lose these instincts and become more prone to drowning.

For thousands of years women have been using water to ease labour and facilitate birth. Wherever there has been even slightly warm water, there have been women bathing in it, using it ritually, and finding great comfort in it, especially in labour.

Soaking in a tub of water to ease labour sounds inviting to most women. If the water is where a woman wants to be and there are no complications, then in the water is where she will feel the most comfortable. When it is time to birth the baby, there is no reason to ask the mother to get out of the water.

When a woman in labour relaxes in a warm tub, free from gravityâs pull on her body, with sensory stimulation reduced, her body is less likely to secrete stress-related hormones. This allows her body to produce the pain inhibitors âendorphinsâ that complement labour. Noradrenaline and catecholamines, the hormones that are released during stress, actually raise the blood pressure and can inhibit or slow labour.

What is waterbirth?
The act of giving birth in water is so incredibly simple. A mother submerges herself in warm, body temperature water during her labour. If she feels like giving birth in that warm buoyant state, there is no need to ask her to leave the water.

The baby has grown in a fluid environment for the past 9 months. Babies adjust very well to being born in a birth pool. Waterbirth is miraculous.

How long is baby in the water after the birth?
Here in the US, practicioners usually bring the baby out of the water within the first ten seconds after birth. There is no physiological reason to leave the baby under the water for any length of time. There are several water birth videos that depict leaving the baby under the water for several moments after birth and the babies are just fine.

Physiologically, the placenta is supporting the baby with oxygen during this time though it can never be predicted when the placenta will begin to separate causing the flow of oxygen to baby to stop. The umbilical cord pulsating is not a guarantee that the baby is receiving enough oxygen. The safe approach is to remove the baby, without hurrying, and gently place him into his motherâs arms.

What is the temperature of the water?
Water should be monitored at a temperature that is comfortable for the mother, usually between 95-100 Fahrenheit (35C-37.7C). Water temperature should not exceed 101F (or 38C) as it could lead to an increase in the motherâs body temperature which could cause the babyâs heart rate to increase. It is a good idea to have plenty of water to drink and cold cloths for the motherâs face and neck. A cool facial mist from a spray bottle is a welcome relief for some mothers as well.

What prevents baby from breathing under water?
Waterbirth is simple. Within the simplicity of water labour and birth lies a complexity of questions, choices, opinions, research data, womenââ¬â¢s experience and practitioner observations.

Over the past five years as more hospitals within the United States examine waterbirth and create programs to support the use of water for labour and birth, newspaper reporters latch onto the sensationalism of this simple option and publish stories of successful waterbirths in local publications. Each reporter does their best to simplify waterbirth and at the same time answer the most common questions. Each story shows a happy beaming mother, a quiet peaceful baby and a proud father, who usually successfully set up a portable birth pool. The surprise headlines like, ââ¬Åwatery birthâ or ââ¬Åbabyââ¬â¢s birth goes swimminglyâ or ââ¬Åjunior makes a splashy entrance,â are countered with the simple stories of couples who have made this decision for themselves and are proud of it.

Can't hear the baby at night?

ItzMe

I feel horrible. I am a stay at home mom. Our daughter recently got her 4 month set of shots and has been a bit cranky. She is breastfed and will fall asleep on my breast then we'll take her to her crib. For the last two nights I didn't hear my daughter cry and my husband got up. I feel so bad! He works in the morning and I don't and I think I should be the one waking up but I can't hear. I heard him later with her and then I breastfed her and she fell asleep. I can't help but to feel horrible! PLS Help! Any moms went through the same thing? Any suggestions?

Answer
it happens to the best of us - i have an 8month old who still wakes up multiple times at night. maybe y our husband didn't mind getting up with her. you can either tell him to wake u up next time so he can sleep, get a monitor and turn it up all the way, or sleep in her room/ have her sleep in your room. hopefully she starts feeling better soon! good luck!

What are the "Baby Essentials" for the first few months of life?

Sophia's M

My husband and I are having our baby next month.
There are so many things that we might like and want..But being first times parents, What do we really need and what should we wait on or avoid all together.

So far we only have a bassinet, tons of clothing a carset that snaps into a Stroller frame.
We have her nursery painted but need to get furniture. We have been waiting on bigger stuff to see what were getting at our shower..But also we don't see the need to do it now when she will sleep in our room for a few months.

Answer
I will give you two lists. The what you need and don't as far as furniture and my basic other list. Let me start by saying that I wanted the perfect nursery with a matching set of furniture. After looking at the prices I changed my mind. My furniture doesn't match, but my nursery is still cute and functional. I would recomend the book baby bargains you can get it at half.com from $0.75 to $12. I used it to buy everything. It tells you the best brands, prices, ratings, and safety for everything.

You do not need a changing table. Try to only get things that you can use as the baby gets older and for other children. We got a 3 drawer dresser with a 2 shelf cabinet on it. It is long and low. We used the top for the changing area. I think we got it at Walmart for around $100. Get a changing pad and 2 or 3 changing pad covers. I also have a changing organizer that hangs on the wall to hold diapers, wipes, etc.

I have a rocking chair that was also under $100. We got a Graco-Lauren 4 in 1 crib. It is one of the safest cribs and only costs $140 at walmart. I also have a Rubbermaid set of drawers for all the small stuff.

I used a Graco pack n' play playpen with the bassinet and changing area on top of it for the first 3 months. We didn't even use our nursery for anything more than a closet that whole time. It sounds like you really have just about everything you will need at first.

Here is my layette list:
The Boppy for breastfeeding, this was my best friend, take it to the hospital with you. I have multiples of some things because they will get pooped and puked on.

5 receiving blankets.
2 or 3 bigger baby blankets
6 long sleeved onesies
6 short sleeved onesies
3 sleepers
1 or 2 bag sleepers
3 newborn hats
5 pairs of socks
1 pair of gloves, to keep baby from scratching
baby washcloths
baby bath soap
baby lotion, don't use baby oil it will dry them out worse
a carseat cover
1 package cloth diapers to use as burp rags
2 packages of disposable diapers
baby wipes
non-talc baby powder
diaper rash cream
baby finger nail clippers
nose bulb
2 pacifiers
a package of bottles in case breastfeeding doesn't work out
breast pump, even a hand pump, that's all I ever used
breast milk bags
diaper pail
a baby swing would be nice but I survived without one
bouncy chair, great for putting baby in while you clean house or take a shower.
2 or 3 sheets for the bassinet
some sort of rocking chair is nice but you don't have to have one

You won't need these right away if baby is sleeping in your room
2 or 3 sheets for crib
crib mattress
waterproof mattress pad
baby monitor
changing pad
2 or 3 changing pad covers

Baby's hospital bag.
2 or 3 outfits
a going home outfit
a few blankets
a pacifier

Honestly that's about it. I could probably think of more if I tried but like I said you really only need the basics, not even everything I mentioned. Get all the rest you can, let yourself heal and recover after giving birth, don't be afraid to ask for help, and take lots of pictures. Good luck.

Wireless internet drops occasionally?

deerpoob

So this christmas I got myself a brand new laptop, works great, windows 7, completly happy with it, problem is our older router kept dropping the internet randomly, a few weeks later we upgraded the internet to the best version the company were with (Rogers, its Canadian) offered, which required us to get a new modem, which it turns out, also functions as a router, I was overjoyed, thinking the router would be more consistant, which unfortunatly it has not been.

these are the things that connect to the router:
playstation 3 (wired)
2 other laptops (both wired in a horrible attempt by my dad to alliveate the problem)
as well as my ipod touch, and laptop, which are the only two things that use the wireless part of the router/modem and althought most of the time the wireless has to go through a floor or 2, the problem still exists even if I sit about 5 feet away.

the model of the router/modem is SMC8013WG-CCR
the laptop is acer aspire 7535

the problem isnt that big, with the old router the connection would drop for 5-10 minutes one ever 2-3 hours or so, now it drops every 2-3 hours but I can actually just reconnect, as if it never actually dropped, its quite strange, but the problem also exists on my ipod, which leads me to belive the problem is with the wireless settings, and not the laptop, as the other laptops (which are wired in) work all the time.
well the router is away from microwaves wireless phones and the like, and even when I sit about 5 feet away it still drops, how would I go about working around the interference? there is simply no place I can be that is closer.
how would I got about editing the MTU?

Answer
Consider other sources of interference... such as microwaves close by or 2.4 GHz cordless phones, bluetooth, or baby monitors.

What noise sources affect wireless signals?

Dave

I've been asked to do a thing for college I know that magnetism and stuff affects signals in wires but what is capable of distorting and causing noise in wireless computer signals?

Answer
WiFi operates in the 2.4 GHz band. This band has a *lot* of consumer electronics in it: Cordless phones. Baby monitors. Microwave ovens. Bluetooth. Wireless security systems often use the 2.4 GHz band.

It's a very cluttered space.

having my baby shower for our baby girl, need some unique ideas of games to play, I like the diaper game idea with the candy bars, any others....??

Baby Shower Games and Activities

Who Can Make The Mommy-To-Be's Baby?
(Materials: Baby Magazines, Scissors, Glue Sticks, Paper)

Divide your guests into groups 3 and give each group 3 baby magaizines (you can get these for free, usually, at local pediatrician offices or even the local hospital). Have them cut out pictures of different baby parts (eyes, ears, hair, smile, body, feet, etc.) and put together a picture of what they think mommy's baby will look like. Have the Mommy-To-Be judge the final results based off of what she thinks the bundle of joy will resemble. Give prizes to the winning team. This is a lot of fun and a really popular (yet not overdone) baby shower game!

Letters to The Baby
As the guests walk to the table (or designated location)where the gifts are being placed.....have a special station set up on the side of the gift table. At this station have cute baby themed stationary laid out with some nice pens. Beside the stationary have a card out asking each guest to take a few moments to write a note to the new baby. When the guests have finished writing their notes, have a tray or basket provided to place them in. Once all the guests have written their notes....the hostess can then choose one or two, at random, to be chosen for a prize (this could be your shower's door prize). When the shower is over these notes can be placed in a scrapbook or album to be enjoyed by the parents now and by the baby years down the road. Sweet and sentimental and sure to be treasured by the new family!!!

How Many Diapers in the Diaper Cake?
If you have chosen to have a diaper cake at the baby shower, play a fun game where guests guess how many diapers are in the cake! Make sure your diaper cake provider tells you how many diapers they used (so you don't have to try and count them all yourself!). Better yet, order your cake from Diaper Cakes by Becca and the amount of diapers will be listed on the "recipe" included along with your diaper cake (and we always try to make it a random, not-easy-to-guess number!)! The guest that gets closest to the actual number wins a prize.

Baby Shower Bingo (a classic favorite!)
(Materials: Bingo Templates *see below* and pens or markers)

1) Print out a few more Bingo template cards than you think you will need.
2) Fill in the blank squares with registry items and common baby shower gifts (ie: diapers)
3) Distribute a Bingo Card and Pen/Marker to each guest at the baby shower
4) As the parents-to-be open their gifts the guests will mark their cards if they have it on there.
5) Whoever gets a completed row horizontally, vertically or diagonally will win a prize!

help baby savana monitor?

Pedro

can i keep it warm with just a heat pad. its a 10 gallon tank

Answer
The very simple basics for savs ~

~large custom enclosure (minimum 4x4x2)
~2 feet of diggable substrate (DIRT)
~A basking spot that achieves a surface temp of AT LEAST 130F (aim for 135 or so)

A 10g is not even a good starter enclosure for a sav. Heat pads are useless in a proper set-up. Invest now in the proper enclosure and husbandry equipment rather than having to continually upgrade to finally get to the proper enclosure. Here's a link to some great enclosures that are actually relatively cheap and work great ~

http://www.proexotics.com/FAQ2.html#lizard_monitorhousing

Read through all the lizard FAQs, it's got some great advice. Be aware that most monitor info online is crap. Before using any suggested husbandry read through the entire care sheet or article and see if all of the other info is any good.

EDIT: Posted my response before I read through your other questions. Take the monitor back and get a leopard gecko. You need A LOT more experience before taking on a monitor. Do research and get ahold of local keepers, visit them and observe how to care for a sav properly... Even better, volunteer with a reptile rescue. I work with one and I think that volunteers coming in and learning from hands-on experience is great, it means that I probably won't end up with one of their lizards later on because they know what they are getting into beforehand.

EDIT (AGAIN): VARANID ~ Thanks for catching my mistake on the size thing. ~ooops!!~ Am taking breaks from studying for PSYC and SOC tests by coming to Y!A, feeling a lil fried. :-) Posted a great size enclosure for a beardie, not monitors.

My ackies are doing amazing!! And yes, I'll be dealing with eggs soon. :~) Didn't even think about breeding conditions and dirt temps when answering this question.... Just pictured an enclosure that someone was trying to heat with only a UTH (have actually seen that one more than once in rescues!!). Thanks for your clarifications.

Are there any dual camera baby monitors?

Turk II

We use a simple wireless video monitor to keep tabs on my 2 year old son while he's napping and sleeping. Eventually he'll have a little bro or sis that we'll also want to keep tabs on. Are there any baby monitors that incorporate two cameras viewable on one remote monitor?

Answer
The one from Summer does. You can put one video on A and the other on B. Then on the monitor you can switch from viewing A or B. I figured this out when my SIL came for a visit and brought her video monitor. We had my daughter on video A and her son on B.

The Best video baby monitor?

StartingOv

We are wondering what the best Video Baby Monitor is?
We are moving into a new home where our 22month olds bedroom will be rather far from our bedroom & I feel a Video Monitor is the best thing for our situation. However, He wont sleep unless his room is almost completely pitch black so I've read that there are the Infrared vid monitors available but they are pretty expensive. Anyone have any experience with the ones with the LED/or regular lights actually on the camera itself? My son can't take light in his face and will wake up would this be a problem with these cameras?
I found a nice one on ebay for cheap because the antenna is gone off from the monitor itself do you think this would affect it? We are across the house from my sons bedroom so wondering if it would still work ok?
Anyway what is the best brand/monitor itself that you would recommend for baby video monitors?

Thanks!! =)

Answer
there's just a tiny light on them to allow the night vision to work, its not going to affect your baby I don't think. We use the summer flat screen video monitor and it works great.

Our Internet Connection is very bad and we are thinking of getting a new router. Any Suggestions.?

Trevor

We have a Belkin N450 Router. We have at least 10 Devices connected and the Router can handle it, we want to buy a new one of upgrade it. We have a Computer, 2 Ipads, 3 Iphones/Ipod, Xbox, Kindle Fire. What would you recommend.

Answer
Upgrading the router will not improve your Internet connection.

How fast is your Internet connection?

You can measure your Internet speed here: http://speedtest.net

That being said,

A wireless router connects two separate networks and manages the traffic between them.

In most home network applications the router connects your local group of computers and devices known as the LAN with the Internet, commonly called the WAN or Wide Area Network.

For example, If you have a 5 Mbps Internet connection, the maximum shared Internet bandwidth available to all of the devices connected to the router will be 5 Mbps.

Any bandwidth others users or devices on your connection are using will be deducted from the total WAN (Internet) bandwidth that is available to you.

If you have a 5 Mbps Internet connection and one user is utilizing 4 Mbps of the bandwidth to stream a Netflix movie, that only leaves 1 Mbps for all of the rest of the users on the LAN.

In simple terms, the more users you have the more speed will be required. Streaming video, such as Netflix and Hulu require a lot of bandwidth. Here are the minimum recommendations from Netflix. https://support.netflix.com/en/node/306

Many people would be likely be surprised at how many active connections their wireless router has. I have dozens. cell phones, tablets, iPods, game consoles, laptops, desktops, ROKU boxes, Internet enabled devices such as TVs and audio receivers, and the list goes on.

Fast wireless routers and connections are designed to stream large files on your LAN quickly. The high speed routers permit fast transfer of files between devices connected to your LAN, however WAN speed is still limited by your ISP. The only way to Improve your Internet speed is to upgrade your plan or switch to a faster ISP.

If you still want to upgrade for other reasons other than Internet speed,

It pretty much comes down to what features you want and how much you want to spend.

As far as the brand goes, the brand is not as important as the model. Some manufacturers release a good model but the next is crap. I would look at the Amazon reviews of models that interest you. Even if you don't buy from Amazon the reviews will tell you a lot about which models to avoid. Look for at least 15 or more reviews with a 4 star or better rating. Read a few and see if they sound like the particular model will work for your application.

For under $50, this Medialink is the most popular and highly reviewed model. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A3YN0Z0/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00A3YN0Z0&linkCode=as2&tag=excharge-20

If you want to spend a little more, many routers support "Dual Band". http://www.amazon.com/s/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&keywords=dual%20band%20router&linkCode=ur2&qid=1374595143&rh=n%3A172282%2Cn%3A541966%2Cn%3A300189%2Ck%3Adual%20band%20router%2Cp_72%3A1248879011&rnid=1248877011&tag=excharge-20

Dual band routers have multiple wireless radios enabling broadcast on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands simultaneously. Using the 5 GHz band cuts down on interference from cordless phones and microwave ovens.. Not all devices can use the 5 GHz frequency. Many laptops and other devices only operate at 2.4 GHz. Thus the need for dual band routers.

In any case,

You should try to centrally locate your wireless router or gateway up high and away from dense walls and electrical and 2.4 GHz wireless interference such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, baby monitors, etc.

Wireless signals, including 2.4 and 5 GHz, are affected by many factors including distance, wall density, electrical interference, directional antenna range, etc.

All of these factors will affect your actual wireless range. As wireless connection quality varies the connection speeds are renegotiated. The WLAN connection may start at 150 Mbps and end up at less than 10 Mbps or drop entirely.

Your best bet is always a direct Ethernet connection to the router, especially for fixed devices that don't need mobility. Ethernet is unaffected by wireless interference and will give you a rock solid, stable network connection.

Good Luck...

Hot to set up a sound system throughout the house?

kitty98

This house is already pre-wired: it has in-ceiling speakers in the master bedroom, bathroom, garage, and patio (these are 80W). Every set of speakers has its own volume control. Plus there are also 6 speaker hook ups in the living room.

I want to set up capable of playing different things at the same time, ie. if I want to hear music in my bedroom, while my roommate watches a movie in the living room. How can I do this? what good receiver can handle this? I need a receiver capable of handling 2 or more different sources at the same time.

I also need a surround sound sys for the living room. It has the cables, but not the speakers. Recomendations?

Do I need an amplifier too, or the receiver alone can deal w this?

I'm pretty new w all this, so info w baby steps will be greatly appreciated :-)

Answer
I have provided links below with tutorials and diagrams for multi room applications. You will need a receiver with dual zone capabilities. You do not say if your volume controls have impedance matching. If they are impedance matching controls you will only need to add a fairly beefy two channel amp (which you will connect to your receiver's zone two preamp outputs) to drive the speakers in the bedroom, bathroom, garage, and patio. If these volume controls do not do impedance matching I recommend you get a multi channel amplifier (you will need at least eight channels) which you will connect to the zone two preamp outputs. This will give you MUCH better performance in your bedroom, bathroom, garage, and patio than trying to drive all 4 pairs of speakers by your receiver's zone 2 output (low power). You do not need a speaker selector (switch) since you have volume controls unless you want to use this for impedance matching. I would not recommend it for that purpose though (signal loss). Either go with an impedance matching block or (BETTER) go with the multi channel amp. Since volume controls usually don't provide much information on the front and since you are pretty new to this you may need to find out who installed the system to find out if these controllers are impedance matching. Worst case scenario an installer can look at the back of the controllers to tell you if they are impedance matching. People who do multi-room on the cheap usually go back eventually to upgrade their system. Best to do it right to begin with.

Recommendations for your home theater:
1) Do a lot of comparison listening and pick what sounds best to you.

2) Be sure to listen to brands such as M&K (I like these alot), Monitor Audio, and B&W on the higher end. On the slightly lower end try brands such as Boston Acoustics, Klipsch, and Paradigm.

3) Recievers: I like Denon (sound quality). Onkyo, Yamaha, and Harmon Kardon are good too.

what's the best of the best babyphone / baby intercom / baby monitor thingy ?

Michael V

what's the best of the best babyphone / baby intercom / baby monitor thingy ? I've heard that I need to buy something with DECT and that there are also systems that monitor the baby's breathing etc... what's the top of the line system ?

Answer
I was also looking for a good baby monitor, and my husband and I wanted a combined video/audio one.

After much researching around and reading lots of reviews, we're going to get the:
Swann SW233-WDM VBM-330 Digital Video Baby Monitor
It costs about AUD$260.

These were our criteria for selection:
Audio - good microphone
Color video and reasonable screen size
No interference or use of multiple channels
Night vision (at least a few meters)
Thermometer a plus
Multiroom monitoring if possible
Portable receivers
Transmitter - non-battery powered
Motion sensor for stop of movement
Underwriters Labs mark for safety
Intercom
No LED flahes on camera
No Auto-mute

The Swann model does not necessarily fulfil all the criteria, but the most important ones it does fulfill, and it fulfills the most of our criteria.

Hope that helps! P.S. Swann is very good in surveillance technology.

what does this mean. ten points?

Transmission Band1.9 GHz? what does that mean when it comes to phones for examplez
American Telecom 1.9 GHz and is $36.00 a good price for this type of phone. im trying to buy a house phone that is cheap that is why im asking.

Answer
1.9Ghz is the RF that the handset and base communicate with each other.. that is the frequency that DECT phones operate on... it will provide better range compared to 2.4 and 5.8Ghz phones..

with radio waves the LOWER the frequency the FURTHER the range...

also, since DECT/1.9Ghz has been set aside for cordless communications there is no other consumer wireless devices in this frequency range such as in the 2.4Ghz range, where there is wifi, wireless video cameras, baby monitors, microwave ovens and other devices...

Baby monitor question?

Carrie

Would you rather have a video monitor or a sound-only monitor? I have a video monitor and I love it!

Answer
I have the angel care sound and movement monitor and I wouldn't have it any other way. I am not sure if you can see a baby breathing on the video monitor but with the sound and movement monitor if my baby would stop breathing it would alarm and let me know. Thank God that has never happened but it gives me a peace of mind knowing that if it did I would wake up with in 20 sec. later. Granted a video monitor would really give me an in site on what my children are doing in their room when they are suppose to be going to sleep but other then that I prefer my angel care monitor.

Does the Angel Care baby monitor really work? Does it really detect your babies breathing?

We just wanted to get some more information on how it really works. The FAQ on the site was pretty vague. Thank you!

Answer
It detects movement in the crib. Breathing = movement. But you have to remember to keep anything that would create movement artificially away from the crib. That means no mobile, no fan blowing directly on the crib (not like you would anyway), and no toys that create vibrations. If your baby stops breathing, there is no movement, and the alarm would sound off. But if something like a mobile is moving and preventing the sensor from picking up this lack of baby movement...

We have one and love it. We have a very small house and we both never really felt comfortable having our daughter sleep in our bed with us. We literally did not have the room next to the bed for a bassinet, so she was in her crib from day 1.

You can set your parent's unit to continuously monitor the noises in the room, like a regular monitor, or you can set it to only pick up noises like coughs, rolling around, and cries. This was huge for me, because with a regular monitor, I wasn't ever getting any sleep. I was listening for noises which weren't there, and the constant static would drive me crazy (static is non-existent with this).

As far as the movement part of it, we never had a false alarm. The only times the monitor ever went off was when we took our baby out of the crib without shutting the nursery unit off first. There is a setting on your parent's unit that you can turn on or off, whatever you prefer...it's a rhythmic "tick" sound. As long as it ticks, it indicates that the movement sensor is working. Or if you're like us, you can turn it off and just test it once a day. My daughter is healthy, but it gave me extra piece of mind knowing that we had it. No, it doesn't *prevent* SIDS, but it helps to keep you in check with your baby. If we didn't have this monitor, I'd be going in her room while she was sleeping all the time and putting my hand on her chest to make sure she was breathing. As a new mom, I was completely petrified of everything.

Another great feature I loved is that it detects and displays in digital format the temperature in your baby's room on your parent's unit. You can set it to sound off an alarm if the temperature in the nursery drops too low or kicks up too high, at temps specified by you.

The parent's unit is cordless and rechargeable, and the charge lasts a full day and night, and probably longer, but we've never let it go that long.

My daughter is 14.5 months and we still use the unit as a sound monitor only. After trying all kinds of monitors, even as a sound monitor I would have spent the extra money for it.

To me, the cost of the monitor is pennies to give you that extra piece of mind.

Why does WIFI lose quality and speed the longer you stay on?

Q. Seriously, I'm computer retarded and just wondering why it does that. It goes from 54mb/sec to 10 or less sometimes.

Answer
If you speed is dropping then it is nothing to do with how long you have been connected it must be down to another problem.

Generic advice for improving wif reception [you give no info on the router or what device you are connecting with]

To start with the basic rule is to position the wifi router as high and as centrally as possible in your house.

1] Try changing the broadcast channel from the wireless setup interface for your router/modem.You can normally access this by typing "http://192.168.0.1/" into your browsers search bar and then look for the wireless settings menu.
You don't say if your router can use the 5GHz frequency or just the 2.4GHz. The best channels in the 2.5GHz spectrum are 1,6, 11, or 13 as they have less overlap with the other channels.

There is a useful article here about how to get the best performance by selecting the best channel.: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/21132/chaâ¦

If you have an android smarthphone, or a friend does, then install the Wifi Analyzer app free from android market and use it to scan for the best channel and change your routers broadcast channel accordingly. This app will aslo show you all the wifi signals in range that your neighbours are using, so you can select a different channel to them, making a stronger signal for you. https://market.android.com/details?id=coâ¦

2] You can use a tool like Nirsofts totally free WirelessNet View to look at all the local wireless signals that are within range and may be competing with your own router and interfering with reception. from here: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wireless_neâ¦

3] You can buy a Wi-Fi booster like D-Link 645 Smartbeam, here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/D-Link-DIR-645-Wâ¦
Devices such as these can actually boost the wifi signal by using multiple beams that bounce of the walls and are intelligently directed toward whatever device [smarhphone, laptop, tablet] you are using on wifi.

4] If your using the 2.4GHz frequency and not the 5GHz then other devices that use this frequency band can alsso interfere with your reception [eg baby monitors and microwave ovens use 2.4GHz]. Try and make sure that none of these devices are situated between your router and your wifi receiver eg laptop, tablet, smarthphone etc

What kinds of baby monitors are available for deaf parents?

candy177

I've looked a little bit online and found a monitoring system where you basically hook your whole house into this receiver (phone, doorbell, alarm clock, baby monitor etc) that comes with light functions and a vibrating disk to put under the mattress. The baby monitor is sold separately and can be hooked up either way also. Together, all of this costs about $225-250. Do they have cheaper systems? In the 2 years that my husband and I have been together, we've never really seen the need to get anything like this for the phone and such...and since we have an apartment, we don't have a doorbell anyway.

Reason being - my husband is hearing impaired and we're thinking of having a baby in the next year and a half or so...I just want to be prepared. :) I don't think the little Fisher Price monitors that vibrate would be strong enough to wake him if I was at work...

Hearing impaired and creative people please help!?

Q. My grandparents live in an assisted living facility, (not a nursing home, they just make them dinner, clean their "apartment" and have 'help' pullies in every room. My grandma just got diagnosed with cancer again, and were worried about her new treatment disorienting her and making her fall at night. Her and my grandpa have seperate rooms, b/c of sleep equipment noise.

Anyway, my grandpa is VERY hard of hearing, and we can't figure out how to make sure he wakes up if she needs help. She can't yell loud, she has advanced lung cancer. She fell out of bed not to long ago and had to wait until he woke up in the morning and got his attention by shining a flashlight at a mirror!!! We're so worried she'll have to lay there again if she gets up again at night and falls. (She couldn't reach the help pull and she takes her Lifeline necklace thingy off when she sleeps)

We are thinking about getting a baby monitor, but my grandpa is so hard of hearing, it probably won't wake him up
She went into a nursing home the first time she had cancer. It was it was the best one we could find in the area, on several occasions we would go in and multiple lights would be blinking for assistance, and all the nurses just stayed at the nurses station and ignored them. She stayed stuck in the bathroom for 3 hours once. My grandpa can take care of her during the day at this facility, he just can't hear at night if she falls. And it's 2 two buildings down from the hospital. She's fine during the day, but her medicine disorients her at night (and it would be permanent, grade 4 lung cancer has a 3 to 5 month life expectancy, so we would rather she was comfortable living with my grandpa) Thanks for trying, we're thinking about maybe getting a blow horn :) She won't sleep with her life alert on her neck or wrist :(
oh, and no animals allowed :(

Answer
Extend what you are calling the "Help Pull" so that it can be reached from the floor. Find a device that makes a lot of noise (a radio or some kind of bell or buzzer might work) that she could use as an alarm and set it under the edge of the bed.
