From newborn to a year old?
Well I obviously know about diapers.
I have 4 boxes of them. I want to know what my baby will need.

Answer
I love my baby monitor, It's night vision, an I can watch him and hear him, and it's portable. So I can always keep an eye on him.
His crib bumpers, he's 3 months old an rolled on tummy an scoots across the crib till he rams his head in it, the bumpers really help his little head lol.
The light up singing sea horse. After a few minutes the light and music fades.
The blankets from the hospital are the best spit up rags ever!
Small plastic crates keeps his toys, diapers, meds organized. Plus I have 1 I throw dirty diapers in an I clear that out daily.
And his exasaucer, being only 3 mo. he can stand, but no balance good.. But in the exasaucer he can dangle his feet, stand if he wants to with it's help, and turn in circles to see the other toys.
His bath seat, it has the right incline on it, so he won't slip out, an a net back/bottom so soap an water don't get stuck be hind him.
His massage chair/bouncy seat, not for him, for me. It feels great when your ankles are swollen, just turn the vibrator on, place your feet in the seat an set back with baby an a bottle.

What was your homebirth experience like?

Just out of curiosity; I'm not pregnant.

Thank you in advance... and please give details.
=)
FutureFarmersWife what an excellent answer! So thorough. And I admire your bravery in choosing a home birth for your first birth. Wow!

Answer
My home birth was, in a word, incredible. It was exactly what birth should be. No interventions. No impatience on the part of the midwives. Nobody telling me what I could or couldn't, should or shouldn't do. No being stuck with an IV. No monitoring, other than periodically checking for the baby's heartbeat with the doppler and being examined for dilation.
My labor lasted approximately 26 hours, about 18 hours of that real, hard labor.
I went gradually into labor the evening of December 27th. My midwife's assistant came over about 11:30 p.m. to check me and get an idea if this was the real thing or not. My contractions were closing in on 60-90 seconds long and 5 minutes apart. After she came and was there a little while, the contractions began to piddle out. Well, I was NOT going to let this labor stop! I was ready to have my baby and wanted to get the show on the road. So my husband rubbed the pressure points above my ankles and that got things moving again. The contractions continued to get more aggressive throughout the night, but I slept in between most of them. Didn't get much sleep though. Finally morning came. I moved around a lot, rocking in my rocking chair, "baby dancing" (no, not the TTC kind of baby dancing! Obviously, we'd already done that!), squatting, rocking on hands and knees, etc. Sometime that morning, my midwife had me eat a granola bar (when/if I felt like it) to keep my blood sugar up. About 10 a.m., she checked me and said I was dilated to 6 cm. I had been almost to 3 cm. the night before, so it was kind of discouraging to know that I had only gotten 3 more cm. in the last 10 hours. Oh well, as the midwife said, the last bit usually goes a lot faster than the first. I guess, considering it took me several weeks to get to 2 cm. and 12 hours more to get to 6 cm., the last 4 cm. DID go a lot faster. But it sure didn't seem like it. It took me 9 more hours to dilate completely. About 2 p.m., I was checked again and was told I was at 7 cm. After this, I really lost track of time. It was hard, hard labor by then. On paper my transition lasted 6 hours and 10 minutes. I spent a good part of that time in the tub. The hot water helped me relax and eased the pain. It was at this point where the only thing that kept me from freaking out, tensing, fighting, and screaming was focusing on my breathing, looking into my husband's eyes as he breathed right along with me. Several times, the pain was so intense, that my vision started to get hazy and it seriously felt like I would pass out. Thankfully that would only happen for a few seconds at a time and only for 5 or 6 contractions. The second to last time I was checked, I got out of the tub and stayed out, choosing to labor on the toilet instead. This is where my real mental transition began. I totally felt that this was never gonna end. That I couldn't make it to the end. The only thing that helped other than breathing was concentrating on one contraction at a time, instead of looking at all the contractions to come. It was towards the end of this stage that, had I been in the hospital, I probably would have crumbled and got the epidural. Thank goodness, even in the hospital I would have been too far dilated to get it. My midwives assured me that every woman went through this stage and that I was very close to pushing stage. I didn't believe them. I figured, since it had taken me this long to get this far (I think I was at 9 cm. at the time), it would take me several hours yet. So I danced, leaning against a doorway, moaning, praying. Mind you, I wasn't fighting the pain, just dealing with it. Finally, Pam (the midwife) said it would probably be a good idea to check me again. So I laid on the bed and she told me I was pretty much complete with a small lip. She told me I could give little grunts to see if that would move that lip aside. The grunts felt good and before I knew it, I had my first, full-blown pushing contraction. OH. MY. GOODNESS! One of the best feelings in the world! And with that one push, my baby's head was RIGHT there. There was so much pressure that I pushed without even waiting for the next contraction. In the back of my mind, I knew that pushing that way was a good way to get a tear, but I didn't care. I just wanted my baby OUT! I remember hearing the two midwives talking between themselves that we would probably have this baby around 9 p.m., about 2 hours away. A 2 hour pushing stage is very average for a first-time mom. Well, I did it in 8 minutes. I proved the midwives' adage that "a slow starter is a fast finisher." WithOUT tearing! I think I pushed 5 times before my son was born, never even stopping for the head. I fully expected Pam to tell me stop sometime during that lovely burning feeling, but she never did. So I kept pushing. I ended up with something similar to a brush burn. Definitely not the tear I was dreading.
As soon as my baby was out (like, literally, with seconds), before the midwife even had the chance to

How do you get better reception on a baby video monitor?

KMCelio

I just bought a Summer Video Monitor and it doesn't work without static between two rooms in our small condo. I am hoping there is a way to improve reception, because right now I can't even keep it on at night because the static noise is so great, and when I turn the monitor on the picture is pretty fuzzy and jumps in and out. Any advice?

Answer
Try unplugging any electronic devices between the transmitter and receiver, see if something is causing interference.

What is the best baby video monitor around $100?

I need one that's clear and has a decent picture. I just really want to get the cheapest one I could but I don't want to compromise quality..links would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Answer
I got the summer day and night. it was a bit more than $100 but I am happy with it. the thing is that we really only use it at night, so the color aspect of it really doesn't matter much for us.
we bought ours new on ebay and saved about $50 off the price which got it close to the $100 you want to pay.

What kinds of baby monitors are available for deaf parents?

candy177

I've looked a little bit online and found a monitoring system where you basically hook your whole house into this receiver (phone, doorbell, alarm clock, baby monitor etc) that comes with light functions and a vibrating disk to put under the mattress. The baby monitor is sold separately and can be hooked up either way also. Together, all of this costs about $225-250. Do they have cheaper systems? In the 2 years that my husband and I have been together, we've never really seen the need to get anything like this for the phone and such...and since we have an apartment, we don't have a doorbell anyway.

Reason being - my husband is hearing impaired and we're thinking of having a baby in the next year and a half or so...I just want to be prepared. :) I don't think the little Fisher Price monitors that vibrate would be strong enough to wake him if I was at work...

Going to germany with some friends. We are taking two different flights that arrive at the same time, at the same airport. Thinking about bringing walkie talkies so we can find each other in the airport. Good idea, or will not work?

Answer
If you're talking about the little FRS radios that everyone is carrying around in the US... DO NOT DO IT!!! The frequencies are different between the US & Europe. The frequencies used for FRS radios, cordless phones, etc. in the US fall within the Emergency Services band in Europe. In other words, by talking on those radios, you could be interfering with police or fire department radios.

This warning is given loud & clear to all arriving US military & contractor personnel. The Polizi has broken into homes simply to seize US-made baby monitors & phones before.

What is the best hospital for giving birth in Queens/Brooklyn/Long Island, NY?

marycotter

What is important to me is having the ability to have a natural birth without the doctors/nurses pushing for meds or unnecessary c-section. Would love if they offered midwives..

Answer
Get a midwife, trust me if you want control of your birth and want it to be natural, get a midwife and do it at home. I had a nurse-midwife in hospital and it was awful. She made an appearance four times, the last time I ever saw her she caught the baby and then left. It was as bad as having a doctor, don't count on the nurses to help you, they are just there to monitor the baby's heart rate for liability issues (otherwise they would use a hand-held Doppler but wait that doesn't record the readings - see liability issues). I even had to argue with the nurses about wearing my own nightgown! The day of your labor and birth belong at home as long as your pregnancy is low risk. I had a low risk, non-medicated, completely natural labor and birth and yet I was traumatized by it because I was in a hospital, I had a midwife that was never there and I had to depend more on my mother-in-law than anyone there at the hospital. Please get a midwife and do it at home, you'll be much more comfortable there.

Get, beg, buy, steal or borrow one of these books. Even if you choose a hospital birth these books are still great reads. It shows birth as a positive, beautiful and empowering experience.

Ina May's Guide to Childbirth: Discover the Proven Wisdom That Has Guided Thousands of Women Through Childbirth With More Confidence, Less Pain, and Little or No Medical Intervention by Ina May Gaskin.

Spiritual Midwifery, 4th Edition: The classic book on home birth! The first section details the experiences of parents and midwives during the birth experience. The second section is a technical manual for midwives, nurses, and doctors. Includes information on prenatal care and nutrition, labor, delivery-techniques, care of the new baby, and breast-feeding. Consider giving birth upright so that gravity helps instead of having to push a baby up hill out of you (such as giving birth laying flat on your back) Even if you are in a hospital request a squat bar, squatting also allows your pelvic outlet to increase that crucial 1/2 - 1 inch. http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.birthdiaries.com/diary/birth061/birth061.21.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.birthdiaries.com/diary/birth061/&usg=__FjFAA9LxTJZzjljpAMCohkNA1Wo=&h=240&w=320&sz=19&hl=en&start=3&tbnid=pGQ7e9fyVyMezM:&tbnh=89&tbnw=118&prev=/images%3Fq%3D%2522squat%2Bbar%2522%2Bbirth%26gbv%3D2%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff

Also check into The Business of Being Born - ti's a great documentary.
While the United States has perhaps the most advanced health care system in the world, it also has the second-highest infant mortality rate of any industrialized nation, and many have begun to question conventional wisdom regarding the way obstetricians deal with childbirth. While midwives preside over the majority of births in Europe and Japan, fewer than ten percent of American mothers employ them, despite their proven record of care and success. How do American doctors make their choices regarding the way their patients give birth, and who is intended to benefit? Director Abby Epstein and producer Ricki Lake offer a probing look at childbirth in America in the documentary The Business of Being Born, which explores the history of obstetrics, the history and function of Midwives, and how many common medical practices may be doing new mothers more harm than good.

To be honest she has a very low attention sPan with virtually no interests. I'm not sure what to do to help her. Over the last few weeks I've showed her numerous times how to turn off the baby monitOr and she still doesn't get it! It's frustratings, it's not rocket science, it's just pushing a button as an alarm goes off if the baby is picked up before it is turned off. It's really simple. She
Claims she doesn't know how to use a computer, I've tried teaching her and she still doesnt get it. I signed her up for a computer course which she refuses to attend. I've taught her how to use an iPad...basic, she's doing a little better with that than a computer but still can't grasp the basic concepts. I don't know how to help her. I have a new baby, my dad just passed, I'm working on a degree, endless laundry, housework, will be going back to work soon but she still isn't trying to learn.

Answer
Sweetie , you shouldn't be tryin to cope with all this alone go and seek help, your family doctor should help you and give you advice and certainly put you on to someone, your mum might be depressed and needs professional help, you carry on trying to take matters into your own hands and you might go the same way , GET HELP !!! the very best of luck for you i hope she is better soon .

NEW ZEALAND DESTRUCTION!!! Global warming, Volcanoes.?

Quick question for all you Kiwi's out there. My fiancee' and I are planning on moving out there in 4 years and something came to my attention. With all this talk on global warming, scientists have shown that if half of antartica and half of greenland melt, the sea level will rise 20ft. I'm curious to know what the sea level of new Zealand is and where I could find a map of it. I want to know how that will effect your beautiful country. Next question..
I'm from the U.S. and I'm well aware of Super Volcanoes. I passively watched a documentary on one such volcano in New Zealand a while back and was curious to know its validity as well. Which valcano is it? When is it due to erupt? Thank you.

Answer
We cannot predict when a volcano will erupt. however Volcanoes are easier to monitor than earthquakes. There are several different methods, but all of them are based on some geological reality. We think we understand some of the processes that go on before a volcano erupts. The problem is that eruptions begin from below, in regions within the crust, often far from the surface. The trick is to find out what those processes do at the surface before the eruption actually begins, and then to look for those surface effects.
http://vulcan.wr.usgs.gov/Vhp/C1073/scientists.html this site will show you how volcanoes are monitored. Unfortunately we are unable to really tell when or how the volcano will erupt and the severity of the eruption. It is almost like saying you will have a baby boy in three years.

Also there are a few super volcanoes in the world and there is almost no telling when they may erupt, all we can really do is respect them, keep a safe distance and hope for the best. I hope I helped you.

this summer were keeping bunnies in our barn up north and....?

Brooke

were not there every single day, but pretty dang often, were also going to be raising baby phesents to relese onto the property when they are adult. But the bunnies were thinking of getting two from the omish people up there. they will be kept in cages with all the nasesities they need. i was woundering what breed of bunnie is best outdoors? i am in michigan

Answer
How often will you be there? If you aren't going to be there at least every 48 hours, then I wouldn't do it. Plus if the SPCA found out, you could be caught for abandoning them, even though technically you haven't. They will even frown upon not being there every day. Rabbits can go down hill very fast, and not seeing them everyday means you can't monitor them. Plus, you can't really just stock them up with food and hope for the best, they will become obese if you do that, because they will just keep eating fattening pellets all day. Well, if you are raising them for meat then that is fine.

It is the same with the baby pheasants, they really need to be monitored. All breeds of bunnies are kind of the same outdoors. A hardy breed might be the best though, stay away from very fluffy breeds (like angora), very fragile breeds (like Belgian Hare) and very small breeds (like Netherland Dwarves). I'd probably go for something like Mini Lops, Himalayans, New Zealands etc.

Good Luck!

My aunt asked for a new baby minitor in her baby gift registry and I was thinking of getting her the Handheld Color Video Monitor from Target. Its $199.00 and I want it to be worth the money. Is it worth it? Anyone like it/dislike it? Please give me your opinions. I think it is really neat that you can see the baby and everything, but is it too good to be true?

Answer
I disagree with the above answer. We actually have a video monitor for our 6 month old son, and it's great! With regualr monitors, all you hear is the sound. You cant always tel whats going on just by the sound you hear. With the video monitor, you can hear the sound, and see what is going on as well. Sometimes, with just a regualr monitor, you will hear somthing strange, and run in to check it out, and it really be nothing. We had many false alarms becasue sound alone doesnt answer concerns.

The video on the monitor is actually pretty clear. On some, you can actually record on it too, incase you want to use it as a security camera!

Have you ever tried at home baby heart monitors?

Willie

I am considering getting a baby heart monitor so that we can see if we can hear her heartbeat at home. Has anyone ever had any luck w/ the ones from target?

Answer
i'm not sure about the target ones but i was thinking about buying one from walmart and based on the reviews i read for it i'm unsure whether or not to go ahead and get it.
2 reviews said gave it good rating and 2 gave it bad ratings.

heres the link for the one i was looking at:
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5983010

its only $20 so i guess if it doesn't work it isn't too big of a loss. plus you can always return it.

if you do decide to get one make sure you read the reviews. they're very helpful.

so i couldn't be more of a help.

First time mom here, just registered for my shower yesterday & wondering what products are the best?

best baby monitor uk reviews

best baby monitor uk reviews image
Q. Im almost 19 weeks pregnant & had a gender ultrasound yesterday & found out that Im expecting a GIRL! So, we registered right after my appointment at Target & since Im a first time mom we werent sure on a few things to put on the registry. Im wondering if any moms can give me advice & recommendations on the following items that worked best for you & are useful.

The following are things we didnt add to the registry, but are planning to today after getting some reviews on the best ones at Target.

1) Bottles, I have no clue what types are good for newborns. Im not going to breastfeed because Im taking blood pressure meds & dont want to pass to baby, so just bottle feeding

2) Bottle sterilization - which is better, steam or microwave? And which brands?

3) Monitors - This is a very hard one for me. Is video really better? Digital? Analog? Im so clueless on this one

4) Bassinette - We plan on having baby in one in our room the first couple of months. Should I go with something neutral as we are planning to have another child in the future & dont want to have to get another if we get a girly one now & then end up having a boy later. Any certain types better than others?

5) Humidifier - There are cute animals ones at Target (I like the frog) is that a good one, or a Vicks?

6) Sling - Do babies really like these? They look uncomfortable the ones that curve across the body, like babys neck is being strained. And which brand, kind?

**** Thanks ladies, Im a first time mom & just want to get the right stuff not to waste other peoples money & have things that are useful. Baby stuff is so expensive!! Any other tips, advice on anything I forgot is helpful! ****

Answer
1) VERY Hard to choose before the baby is born. Skip adding this and just purchase 2-4 bottles yourself of your choosing, Dr Browns is a good choice but expensive or Avent or similar or also good. Once you know she will definately drink out of them then go out and buy more. If she doesn't like them you'll have wasted a lot of money having to replace them for other ones. Just keep some money aside under your mattress for when the time comes!

2)Microwave!!!! Soooo much quicker and easier. Takes like 4 mins for 4 bottles! Steam is overrated and waaay to expensive compared to the microwave one.
If you own a dishwasher, wash the bottles in hot soapy water, rinse in hot water (what you have to do before using any steriliser anyway), and throw them in the washer instead.

3) I chose just a regular one without all the bells and whistles. I only need to hear my baby and that is it. All those extra bits and pieces is just a marketing ploy. Just use a regular one with good sound clarity. Mine is a basic fisher price sound and lights monitor and it works just perfectly. Its not like I can see my baby when I'm sleeping anyway and thats really when you need it. It does have a little night light on it which I do recommend though. This is it and is great.
http://www.viewpoints.com/images/review/2009/126/4/1241601168-90347_full.jpg

4) Def get a neutral one. Dont get a pink or blue. I do like the idea of the arms reach co sleeper that the other person said but only if its on wheels and the side that juts up to the parents bed can actually be closed off so you can utilise it in other areas of the house. if you don't know what they are heres a link
http://www.totscorner.co.uk/images/Universal_CoSleeper.jpg
otherwise a normal, neutral coloured one is great. Nothing too fancy with music, vibrating, rocking or anything like that. Its a complete waste of the extra money and those functions will not get used especially as its only for the first couple of months when a newborn could care less about it lol

5) Def get the vicks one. It will last, the novelty ones will not

6) I tried slings and carriers. Gave me such a sore back and were uncomfortable and I felt less than agile and more cumbersome than when I was pregnant, if thats even possible! but others swear by them, its personal preference. I'd rather put my baby in his or her pram/stroller to be honest. It was okay when they were less than 12 weeks old but after that it just made me way too sore.
Apparently the contoured slings are fine for them because when you think about it they are all scrunched up in the womb so being in those slings is apprently no different. I wouldn't use one personally

Hope that helps! Good Luck!!

I cant believe it, they MISSED something on my ultrasound! shallow amniotic fluid? can someone help?

Bogan Mum

Ok, il give the scenario quickly. 37 weeks, fundal height (tummy measurement) is only at 34weeks and baby is measuring at 34-35 weeks on ultrasound and her measurements are well below average and only just above the 5% emergency line, her weight has been guessed around 4lb 2oz. if you want the full picture go to my questions and read the one where it says "feel like they arent doing enough to find out whats wrong with my baby". please dont question my due dates or shyt like that as its all explained in the question i said.

Went to hospital today to get monitored and for a better scan to check the amniotic fluid levels and to make sure blood is getting to the baby. They SAID everything was fine and to come back in 2 weeks for another scan and if she hasnt grown then they will induce me then.

However, just got a call from my midwife (its 9.15pm) saying that they (hospital) were reviewing my notes and pictures from ultrasound and noticed that my pools of fluid were too low for 37 weeks?

Now what does that mean? I took a couple of guesses. Does it mean that im further on than they think? Because going by my period my due date would be the 9th november (making me 39 weeks on monday) but at my 6 week scan they put me back to the 18th november (making me 37 weeks 2 days today). Or does it mean that i could be leaking amniotic fluid and not noticing?

Honestly i wish they would just get her out of me so i can stop worrying. Im so fcuked off, honestly!

Answer
Low amniotic fluid can be caused by a few things. Problems with the placenta, leaking or ruptures with the membrane, post date pregnancy (which you don't have since you're early, not over due), dehydration, hypertension, preeclampsia, diabetes and can also be caused by a birth defect with the baby if the kidneys are not developed properly since the amniotic fluid is made up of her urine at this point.

At this point, your best option would be to have your baby delivered unless they give you options on how to raise the level of fluids.

If I were you, I'd go through with your delivery and if you were planning on having more children, switch to an OB (I didn't notice if you were in the UK/Australia or not) or switch midwife since your midwife has left you hanging with a diagnosis that to us can sound like the end of the world without a resolution or explanation as to what's going on.

Please call your midwife and have her explain all of it to you until you are fully satisfied with her explanation and then ask her what the next course of action is until you are satisfied with her answer.

epidural/ Pregnancy Help?

Harpreet V

What will you suggest having baby with epidural or without epidural. please share your experience.
Or should I go in with open mind and if it gets too painful then go for epidural otherwise not.

Is epiduaral painful?

Also when you go into the hospital and they check you in and check the blood pressure, monitor the baby what else they do? Do they insert IV even through you decide not to have pain medication.

Answer
Depends on what part of the world you are living in - it's completely different in America say, as opposed to Australia/New Zealand. - So to answer your question - this is such a personal choice! I encourage mums to prepare their mind and body for a drug free birth, but some mums think this is utter crap (pardon my language) and so I will support them 100% down the epidural path - it's her birth/her choice I say! If you do want to go drug free though - start preparing, either by doing breathing/relaxation exercises or meditations. A marathon runner doesn't just run a marathon without training his mind and body and neither should a woman labour without preparing her mind/body. Its a powerful moment in your life - be ready! In America, it seems everyone is "lucky" enough to get an IV - in Oz and NZ, you would never do that to a woman unless she was at risk. Epidurals don't hurt - it's just the local that they put in before the epidural (local stings like a really angry ant bite!). Take care and all the very best xo

Answer
Seek couples counselling, immediately. It is vitally important to address his need to control; this may well be at the heart of the matter. Threaten to end the relationship, if he won't attend (I predict that he will resist strongly, and may be difficult, in session, at least, at first). It is HIS insecurity, and distrust of you/women, that is responsible. If you don't address this problem now; then expect things to get worse!

Demand one night out, a week, with female friends. View, as applicable, young women's depression, pages R, & V: WOMEN TO WOMEN, teen depression, and eventually the rest of section 2. Take the depression quiz on page J, in section 2, at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris and if positive, print, and take to a doctor, to eliminate medical causes, and find about about respite care; avoid antidepressants, if offered. Weight loss tips, and a free hypnotherapy link is in section 56.

It's important to regularly monitor, and deal with a negative internal monologue (self talk), or mental process, such as disturbing thoughts, images, impulses, or emotions, by the process of (a): recognising it, and (b): challenging it immediately. Technique For Re-Programming Negative Thoughts: When you notice something negative, such as: "I can't do this/ am never going to get over this!" or: "Why am I always so pathetic/useless/such a loser?" or even an image, emotion, or a memory; recognise that it is being generated from the negative part of your mind. Having identified and labelled it, visualise a large, red, flashing, "STOP!" sign, and/or possibly a stern faced person wagging an index finger at you in a negative manner, then say to yourself as forcefully as you can, even aloud in a big voice, if alone: "I know this tactic: GO AWAY FOR A WHILE !!!" You may want to use either: "ruse", "ploy", "game", or "trick". In the case of an image, visualise a large "STOP" sign, or your preferred version.

Some people go so far as to keep a wide rubber band in their pocket, then put it around their wrist, when they catch themselves backsliding, stretch and release it, as a method of reprogramming their mind sooner, but I don't regard it as being strictly necessary. Remember to remove it, afterwards, if you use this method. Most people are suggestible, to some degree, so you could either seek professional hypnotherapy, or, quicker, cheaper, and more conveniently: http://www.hypnosisdownloads.com has: Stop Negative Thoughts

How can we quiet down the baby in the middle of the night? She is not crying but cooing very loudly?

The baby monitor is by our heads. Our little diva is not a crying baby. She is a very happy baby. Our prince's room is next to the nursery and she keeps him up too. She coos and plays loudly for half of the night. The only time that she stops is when one of us goes into the nursery and she just smiles at us. Crying is easy, but she plays and makes all kinds of noises. She is fine, but I never want to turn the monitors off. Suggestions.

Answer
aww thats soooo cute. i suggest just turning it down a bit. if shes really crying you can hear more easily. so either that, or put it further away in the room. hopefully that helps =]

Ever get creepy interference on your baby monitor?

Cyyy

Parents, have you ever picked up creepy or odd interference on your baby monitor? I live in a very populated area and I have picked up odd interference a few times.

Answer
oh yes! A number of times.

But the weirdest one was when my oldest was young.

My husband & I were getting ready for bed one night & I turned on the monitor. He was brushing his teeth & the second I turned it on I heard a man talking. It was so clear too. He was talking to a woman. We could hear both sides of the conversation. My husband thinks it them talking on a phone, not in the same house. So he thinks we picked up their cordless phone. This in 1997 or so.

I called my husband & he came in. The couple was talking about going somewhere & a hotel. I then recognized the voice. It was one of our neighbors! But he wasn't talking to his wife!!! He actually said the womans name a few times. Plus I knew my neighbors wives voice.

We actually listened for awhile. lol I know it was wrong but it was clear he was flirting with her & you bet she was flirting back. They talked about a buisness trip and meeting up at a hotel. No clear sayings of cheating but for sure flirting. He'd tell her what to wear and mentioned perfume. My husband & I then turned it off.

I could never look at him the same after that. My husband & I never said anything to the wife either. We were not 100% sure. But a month or so later they divorced & sold their home. We actually told our other neighbors then what we had heard. They had seen signs of cheating too.

What creeped me out was . . . could they have ever heard us? Plus for just that second hearing a mans voice coming from what I thought was my daughters room really scared me.

We have some cordless head phones. They at least 8-10yrs old. But we often pick up CBs from what seems like Truckers on near by highways.

I need a baby monitor kind of device with a 3 mile range?

Isaac

I need a link to a baby monitor with a 3 mile range(actually 2 miles but some with thresh hold due to trees and terrain). or some device composed of 2 parts, one only sends audio, one only receives audio. It will be used to monitor my 10 year old sister while I am in the barn 2 miles from the house. I am open to any options as long as there is a link with it, and I'd like to spend less than $200 if possible. Thank you

Answer
There are Cell Phones that will connect with your PC..and webcam../
Look at the Lorex website.

What are some baby items you really enjoy having?

Mrs.

I'm talking about things that the baby likes, or things that make life more convienent. Not MUST haves, but things you really like having.

Answer
well, u can go to babies r us website and they have a list for ppl who are going to register..of course it has a lot of things on there that you don't need, but if you weed through you can get what you need out of it...the things i liked;found most useful, etc......

.i would def recommend:
a diaper genie 2; idk why ppl don't like them, there is NO smell in my dd 's room
changing table..will save your back, good for diap changes, clothes changes, sponge baths, etc and you have shelves to store your new baby must haves....i have canvas bins on the shelves to store things that are good to have in reach or easily available...
monitor--i like the graco imonitor, recently bought a second one for another room in the house bc i liked the other one so much, it has been working well for over 8 mos now, and it has good range, battery life, and i can hear EVERYTHING; never any interference....it works great..
boppy pillow with cotton covers, soft ones don't fit as well for some reason
lots of baby hangers, and baby hangers with clips to keep outfits together
primo euro bathtub
prince lionheart diaper depot and wipewarmer; ours works well and the wipes are still very warm when we get them to out dd's bottom; and she doesn't freak out when we are out and they aren't warmed, but seems to appreciate it when they are..
health kit: brush, comb, thermometer (not an ear one, not as accurate), nail clippers, etc.
baby meds, generic is just as good and a lot cheaper...desitin(or plain zinc oxide if you can find it)..not creamy, has less zinc ox in it....infant mylicon and tylenol
lots of diapers , make sure wherever you buy them will let you exchange them for a diff size if you need to even after the return period...brus let me do that, and buy a small pack of a couple brands to see which you prefer before you open the big boxes...wipes, lots of them, without alcohol or fragrance! we use swaddlers diapers and pampers sensitive wipes; no rashes, no reactions to their ingredients, diapers hold a lot when they have too and the netting tends to keep the wet off her bottom...
lots of baby washclothes, you may have to use them on baby's bum if it is really sensitive and gets a rash....and baby towels, but you could use your reg towels if money is an issue

swing, pref swings two ways and plugs in instead of batteries
bouncy seat
infant travel system! easy, easy, easy--we got the graco tour deluxe; it is great, folds with one hand, several seating positions, lays flat for sleep; has a big basket underneath and cup holders for mom and dad, one for baby , place for snacks for baby, and a 'pocket' up top for keys, cell phone, whatever you wanna put there...
play yard, get one with bassinet feature if you want to, easier to keep baby in your room for a while before putting them in crib in their room=we have chicco discovery and it is awesome, has more padding than most, easy to wash..machine wash, most are wipe down...very sturdy, has nightlight, vibration, etc and a flip up change table, has wooden slats that slide in under mattress for support...not that much more exp than the others and much better in my opinion
passys--she loves soothies and that is all she will take..
baby wash, again frag free, dye free
frag free , dye free laundry detergent
clothes hamper or basket
lingerie bag for socks, mittens, anything little so they don't get lost in the wash...
something to put baby toys in
extra toy links
lullaby cd and small cd player; my dd has come to love white noise, she naps with a fan and a womb bear; sleeps at night with a fan....
oh, mosquito cover for your infant carrier..it's where you can see in , baby can see out, but strangers cant just walk up and touch your baby, and they will!!!!!
all i can come up with now...LOL
diaper bags; big one for everything you may need, leave in car unless you will be somewhere a long time, and a small one to stick what you will need for a short run in so you don't have to haul the bigger one

if ffing:
avent formula dispenser; has better review than the ones made by sassy, and convert to a snack cup later...i loved it so much i bought a second one!
bottles--really liked playtex ventaire advanced when she was young, more pieces but it's easy to get them clean when the top and bottom comes off...and they vent through the bottom instead of the nip so no bubbles or foam going back up into baby's milk; they will leak if you don't put them together correctly, but we have had no probs with them and have never had to replace any parts on them..if u decide on them and have leaks, email me and i will explain how to keep them from leaking...:O)
bottle and nip brushes--i really like the ones by munchking that don't have a sponge on the end of the brush, they come in diff colors mixed with white and have a great nip brush in the handles....
drying racks--again, i really like munchkins...
formula mixer: i like dr brown's formula pitcher bc you don't shake it it is only abo

Answer
On February 1st, 2012, I was home for work not feeling well. My fiance left for work at 7am. At 10am, I got a call from his sister. He had been in a head on car crash and was air lifted to a hospital an hour and a half away from where I lived. The hospital had gone through his phone to find someone to call, and had first tried "mom" and "dad", but they were on a cruise in the Bahamas and didn't answer. Next they called "grandma" who gave them his sister's number, and she finally he called me. The accident had occurred just 5 miles from our home, and I was only just hearing about it now. I called my mom to give me a ride, as I was crying so much I knew there was no way I could drive. On the way I called the hospital to see if they could give me information. They said they couldn't say anything about his condition, but that I'd better get there fast, and then asked me what religion he was. I was absolutely convinced that he was going to die before I got there. When I finally did get there, he was in a coma with a fractured skull, broken neck, broken pelvis, and lacerated liver. His brain was swelling and they had to put a halo on him and a pressure monitor in his brain. We called our pastor and he came immediately to pray with us. I had never been so scared in my life. They planned a surgery to fuse the broken vertebrae in his neck, but they couldn't do it until his brain stopped swelling, so for now it was just sit and wait. I ended up getting a room at the place across the street from the hospital, and spent a week and a half just waiting, not knowing if he would have brain damage or be paralyzed. When the swelling finally went down and he started to wake up they did surgery which was successful. After surgery they finally removed his breathing tube and I got to talk to him. He couldn't move his right arm, but he could move everything else and he had no brain damage. After months of physical therapy, he regained movement in his right arm and got his halo off just in time for our wedding.

June 9th, 2012 we got married. Our pastor married us, the one who was there the night of his accident. It was very emotional, and I had never been so happy.

On September 19, 2012, I found out that I was pregnant with our first child. Since then we have just been going to doctor appointments, slowly putting the nursery together, and anticipating the birth of our baby in May 2013.

I'd say it was one hell of a year.

why cant i focus at work?

Laura

on july 11 2012 i gave birth to my stillborn son. since then mt boyfriend and i have had lots of problems and its affecting my work. i cant focus, i cant remember anything and i cant concentrate. i feel paranoid, depressed and anxious.. it really sucks i work as a fulltime pharmacy tech so its very important to focus, and i keep making silly mistakes which are leading me into getting fired. what should i do? i seriously need adice

Answer
I had a stillborn in April of 2012. I'm so sorry for your loss. My baby died of a cord accident (so they think) at 41 weeks with no warning in a low-risk pregnancy. First came numbness, feeling a little better and functional, then two months later every joint in my body began hurting, which brought depression and severe anxiety. I know how paralyzing it can be.

First, see a doctor and a therapist. If you're having depression that arises from a situation, there are drugs you can take in the short term to calm you down, though your doctor will monitor your levels to make sure you're not taking more than is wise. Ativan is a drug that was recommended to me, and it calmed me within 10 minutes when a panic attack would arise. It made me sleepier, but it didn't inhibit my ability to function.

The hazy thinking can be from depression. I'm not pushing anti-depressants, and I don't recommend them to just anyone, but if you're not functioning due to what's happened to you, then you're the person for whom these drugs were invented. It helped me a lot. It got me out of crying hysterically all day and feeling like life was pointless-- to realizing that there is still hope, and though it hurts, life moves on. Your doctor might put you on something like Celexa or Zoloft.

But I'm preaching to the choir if you're a pharmacy tech, I guess. All I know is that the drugs have helped. It's been five and a half months since my daughter died, and I'm now slowly tapering off my anti-depressants, and I very rarely need an Ativan anymore. The mental clarity since beginning the anti-depressant was pretty noticeable. It was like a fog lifted after a few weeks. Maybe that will help you on the job?

Best wishes to you. I'm so very sorry.

Can someone use a video baby monitor to see inside my apartment?

paparazzi_

I have a video baby monitor that has excellent range, but it got me thinking, couldn't someone buy the same monitor and switch to the same channel and see inside my apartment if they wanted to?

I have the "Summer Infant Day & Night Handheld Color Video Monitor" and I know it can work with an extra camera (if I bought one)... so in theory, couldn't that work for my neighbors too?

Answer
It may be possible my sister discovered she has the same baby monitor as her neighbour. One night she just put my niece to bed went and layed down and went to sleep. She woke up a few hours later by this time is was about 1am and her husband was in bed as well now. When all of a sudden she heard a low man laugh coming from the monitor she woke up her husband half screaming and told him to get the baby. He got up realising something was wrong and ran into the nursery and picked up my niece and bought her into their bedroom. They couldn't find the source of the noise and so the baby was in her room for the rest of the night. Then my brother-in-law was talking to them the next morning and they discovered they have the same baby monitor and they can hear them sometimes too and they freaked out when they first discovered it. I'm guesssing that the video one's though would be different because they have the camera but anything is possible, perhaps you could ring the company and ask them about it.

Why is my babys heart beat slowing down?

trina81

Im 32 weeks pregnant and very concerned as i do know that babys heartbeats do slow down later on in pregnancy but his heartbeat is slowing right down for about a minute then it goes back up again. I thought buying this baby heart monitor would put my mind at rest but now it just seems like its making me more concerned would really like some advice please ty
kat

Answer
How much is it dropping? 110-160 beats per minute is considered normal, according to the gynecologist I work with (and also according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists).

The baby may be falling asleep, or moving around such that the detector isn't reading it properly at that moment. A heart rate is also supposed to vary somewhat, it's termed being a reactive heart rate, and is what they would look for if they were monitoring you in a hospital.

If you're concerned though, call the labor and delivery nurses at the hospital you're going to.

Best way to track my fitness with iPhone apps?

best baby monitor app image

philscalis

I have a degree in exercise science and am going to school for physical therapy now and really want to track my fitness now that I have an iPhone and I know the importance of health. However, after researching apps I'm not sure the best app or app combination to use. I want to get a heart rate monitor (wahoo or polar?) and many of the apps will sync with it. I want to track calories, GPS run mapping capabilities, nutritious intake, and I want to track my strength training regimen (sets, reps, etc). The my fitness pal app seems to do some of these things and you can also tie in other apps or sync them with it. However there are so many other ones and I want to know the best way to do this if anyone can help. So far I have downloaded: my fitness pal, endomondo, fitocracy, sportstracker, runkeeper, real intelligence fitness app, and digifit icardio. If someone can help me out it would be much appreciated. I would try them out but don't want to give my info and make an account for all of these apps if they aren't what I want.

Answer
I track some of the same stuff you do, but not everything and I've tried some of the products you have, but not all. However, here's my take:

1. I use Runkeeper as my basic app. I'm primarily a runner and so are most of my friends. It links easily to facebook if you are interested in that. For me, this is how I communicate with my running community. It has some other basic cardio functions in it as well (elliptical, etc)
2. Runkeeper has a GPS function to be used with the iphone, it's generally accurate within 0.1-0.3 mile. However, when I want to be really accurate, I still default to my garmin which I can still link to my Runkeeper account. (ie, when I'm racing or want to track elevation)
3. Realize also that when you use GPS function on your phone, it will wear down the battery very quickly. I'll use the Runkeeper GPS function if I'm running or cycling an hour or less, but it's not ideal for long distances.
4. Runkeeper and probably most fitness apps will link to a heart rate monitor. However, I'd first ask why you intend to use one? As a PT, myself, I've come to the realization that unless you have a medical condition that warrants it, tracking heart rate is overly burdensome for little pay off. Just used your rate of Rate of Perceived Exertion. Whether you are doing intervals or tempo workouts, it's your exertional effort that's the real issue. Most of the established "guidelines" for heart rate during exercise were established for patients recovering from cardiac events, not necessarily for healthy adult fitness. So, unless you want to get into research about cardiac effort, I'd say don't bother. I suppose you can use it if you want to get a MORE accurate idea of your caloric burn, but I have better options for that (more later). I DIDN"T use one for years, mostly because I take a beta blocker which throws the whole target heart rate out the window anyway. I'm using one now (more on that in a minute) only because I'm pregnant and NEED to make sure my heart rate doesn't go over a certain amount (and I have arguements about that anyway). I use the iphone app with it, but haven't linked it to my RK. It does record it on the wahoo site, but I never go back and look at it. The wahoo site also does GPS and if you get the hardware, you can link it with your bike or a foot pod.
5. If you do want to use a HR monitor, I use the wahoo. My husband and I both have Garmin 910XT's and even though he got the heart rate monitor for it, he's happier with the wahoo. Again, he's not even using it anymore and I am. However, I don't even bother logging my heart rate...I use it only as a warning system. I do think I can link it with RK, but haven't bothered. Once I have the baby, I'll stop using it. Not sure why hubby doesn't like the garmin monitor...I just took his word for it.
6. Now, onto strength. RK doesn't really have a place to log this. I used MapMyRun for awhile which at least gave me an idea of how long I was weight lifting and an approximation of calories. In my opinion, if you are looking for an app that does everything, I'd say be prepared for a really complicated app. I found that the more features it has, the less user friendly it becomes. This is how I felt about MMR. For strength training, I'd consider a separate app. Same thing goes for nutrition. There are probably apps out there designed just for that which are much more user friendly.
7. Back to calorie counting. All the apps give you a basic ESTIMATION of your calories burned based on your weight and work out parameters. Even if you are using a heart rate monitor, again, this is only an ESTIMATE. Unless you are in a lab, all these tools provide estimates only. However, if you really want to know what your body is using and burning, I'd recommend the Body Media System. It's about as accurate as you can get with calorie count without having to be in a lab. The web app also has a nutritional log.

So here's my take in a nutshell:
1. Use a basic app for your cardio. Runkeeper is my personal favorite. Only use the GPS for shorter workouts
2. Use a separate GPS (I've only used garmins) if you want to be really accurate with your distance or if you are doing a long work out and simply sync it to your cardio app (like RK) from the garmin site.
3. Don't bother with a HR monitor unless you have a medical reason to do so
4. Use a separate app for your weight lifting and nutrition.
5. Consider a body media system if you REALLY want an accurate calorie count. It's expensive new, but I got a Core basic system used on ebay for $32. (myself, I'm content using the basic estimates from my cardio app).

Maybe there's an app that does everything, but I find that it gets too complicated....I don't want to spend 30 minutes logging my info.

Have you had your membranes stripped during pregnancy?

Machelle

Hello, I am 38 weeks 2 days pregnant. I went to my doctors today and I am 3 ci dilated and the baby's head is very low. The doctor stripped my membranes and monitored me for a couple hours and nothing happened. What is your experience with membrane stripping, should this help me go into labor sooner?
oh and this is my second pregnancy , my little boy is 6 .

Answer
i had mine stripped at 37 weeks or so cause i was really really uncomfortable and had been for like the last trimester. so my OB did it. nothing happened for me.. it was uncomfortable and i started bleeding and spotting.... i went for my next app the next week and she induced me because my fluid was really low... so it didn't work for me, however i hear from a lot of women that it does work to naturally induce. i hope it works for you cause i know how you feel and it would be nice to finally get the pregnant thing over with and start with mother hood.. CONGRADS mommy to be.... i hope all goes well and GOD bless your little one!!!

I have seen articles and reports that T-Mobile will carry apple products in the new year (2013). When can I expect to see the iphone 5 on T-Mobiles network?

thanks

Answer
I let my friend (coworker) who owns an iPhone 5 use my Note 2 just to compare, and showed him how to use it.

I then asked him why people prefer iPhone 5 over the customization that Android gives. He had no answer to that (he did attempt to say that the iPhone was simpler to use, and I described that the it was true that even babies could use the iPhone, but the Android only takes a day to customize to ones wants and needs), just that he never knew Android had gotten so good. He then offered to trade me his iPhone 5 and a gaming screen he had previously used for his triple monitor setup. I stoutly declined.

This sounds like I'm just trying to spite you because even if the events that I have just tried to describe are false (and they are not), they are impolite.

So I won't educate you on the benefits of the Note 2, and Android as an OS, and why I'm not here to start a war, but merely to inform you that iPhone is definitely starting to fall off as a feature full phone every generation. Every generation, the iPhone is declining. I won't speak of it anymore, and just try answering your question without killing myself over how much a tech geek like me needs to tell you how much better Android is. All you have to do is research and use google anyway if you wanted to know, right?

So about iPhone on T-mobile. You probably won't be seeing the iPhone 5 likely appear in next month. After that, they will be very eager to get the iPhone 5 if they truly are considering offering the iPhone 5 (they already offer the Galaxy Note 2, though... OOPS what am I saying?!?!). So around 3-4 months? Yep very likely.

But don't buy a phone on a contract. You will end up paying more. Do you wonder why contracts lock you in and lower the price on phones? It's not really because they want you to stay (well yes they do), but that they gain a better profit anyway. They lock you into a plan that is very bad compared to prepaid plans so every month you will be shelling out tons more money for tons less service. Let's say you pay $90 every month for the same service you get at $49... There you go. 2 year contract = 12+12 = 24 x 40 = 960. You will be shelling out an extra $960 along with the small fee you payed with the phone when you signed your contract ($200 maybe?).

See, I'm just trying to educate you on what choice you should take: prepaid.

Prepaid? Look at Straight Talk, Solavei, T-mobile Prepaid (hidden because they like you using contracts), there are many great options. Check them out.

Best place to buy a Bearded Dragon?

Samantha

I've always been interested in buying a Bearded Dragon ever since my friend from long ago had one and allowed me to hold him. I fell in love! In the past I have bought snakes from Petco and a Reptile Store, but I have heard that the best place to buy a reptile is at a reptile show/expo. I heard their reptiles are healthier and that there is a better selection of the reptiles. Is this true? I definitely don't want to buy an unhealthy Bearded Dragon, and I don't want to pay an insane amount for it.

I live in Tulsa, Oklahoma and I believe we have a Reptile Show/Expo a few times a year. So, my main questions are: Where are best places to buy a reptile? What is the typical cost for a baby Bearded Dragon? Thank you.

Answer
We carry them on our website, and visit reptile shows all over the country every year.

Here is a link to check out the beardies we have in stock and to get an idea on price:

I have a Toshiba laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium. I want to get a microphone for my guitar, a good pair of headphones headphones, Software, audio mixers, and anything else that would be required like USB connector or something. What brands are best? Where should I go to get this stuff. I was wondering if I had to get a different computer also. I am very new to recording. Thanks in advance.
i have $700 and it doesnt have to be professional

Answer
You need a DAW (digital audio workstation) software. A Pro Tools M-powered 8 system http://www.guitarcenter.com/Digidesign-Pro-Tools-M-Powered-8-DAW-Software-105187322-i1432585.gc - would work best on Windows 7. You will need a digital/audio interface and music quality sound card mentioned later.

A condenser microphone for voice recording and a dynamic microphone to record an acoustic guitar. Cables and mic stands. You will also need a studio monitor to listen to your recorded music. http://www.guitarcenter.com/M-Audio-M-Audio-Studio-Pro-3-Monitor---MXL-990-991-Mic-Package-888907-i1471849.gc - I have the MXL 990 and that is very fine quality microphone.

Your electric guitar and microphones can be plugged directly into the audio/digital interface that you need to interface your computer to your DAW software. http://www.guitarcenter.com/M-Audio-FastTrack-Ultra-USB-2-0-Audio-Interface-104806138-i1383564.gc - That interface also contains a music quality sound card that you will really need to produce broadcast ready music.

You will also need a good set of studio quality headphones (frequency response = 20 Hz to 20 kHz) I use these and they sound awesome and are very comfortable. http://www.guitarcenter.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-T44-Dynamic-Stereo-Headphones-244514-i1126224.gc

You'll need a USB cable but, one might be included with the M-audio interface. I recorded on alap top computer for about 6-months and then decided I wanted a seperate desktop computer just for recording music. You really do need a place to stor your music and I would seggest buying an external 1.5 TB drive just to keep your music one. Eventually you will need two drives. One to use as a back up drive.

That is the basics to do what you want to do. It's a really good idea to eventually add a MIDI keyboard workstation like the Roland Juno G. The following software is helpful if you are writing music. Band-in-a-box, Guitar Pro 6, MasterWriter, RPsoft 2000 Musicord, There are lots of plug-ins for Pro Tools and also training books and videos for it. You probably do not need a mixer because you can mix everything in Pro Tools. You might want to get a bass guitar eventually.

I'm a songwriter and I write and record all my own stuff using Pro Tools. I play guitar, bass and keyboard so I can record all the tracks myself. The drums come right from Pro Tools or from my keyboard (I have a Roland Juno G). I sing the lead and all the background parts myself. When I'm finished, I have a broadcast quality recording that could sell on iTunes, Amazon, com, CD Baby, or Tunecore. You can do the very same thing. It's easier than ever before to make a living in the music business today. When you are ready, get a MySpace page. MySpace was created for people in the music business to network with each other. Good Luck to you.

Has it now become acceptable to download music for free?

Q. Remember those lawsuits back in 2000 against napster? That was when p2p was in its baby stages.
What about in 2004 against Kazza and the rest of those others still out today? What happened to those suits, because those website/programs are still up and distributing music for free.
Has it now just become exceptable? Because it seems like those lawsuits did nothing, because those p2p networks are still up and running, along with the websites.

Answer
Nope, it is still illegal. A lot of people have changed the fact that they don't share songs for uploads on those sites now. The RIAA as people monitoring and downoading songs and have peopel upload songs in order for them to catch people stealing music. I know at a college a went to a couple years ago, 8 people were slapped with some pretty heavy fines and court because they were dowloading music p2p. P2P is only legal if the music is not copyrighted or the artist and their record company have allowed it. Usually neither of those are the case. But they keep the sites in place for the situations where they are not copyrighted. They just make you agree that YOU will not perform illegal activity using the program. Reason thing have somewhat calmed down about the arguement is there are many programs you can get now that allow you to have music but pay for it. Napster, Rhapsody, Itunes, WalMart and the list goes on.
