Is it bad to have baby's room upstairs while you sleep in the basement?

Q. My friend wanted me to get some other people's opinion....

Her husband and she sleep in the basement and her 8 month old son sleeps upstairs in his room. They keep all the doors and windows locked....the dog (a Chow) sleeps upstairs in the kitchen as well. And they have a video baby monitor.

Do you think it is unsafe?

A. No i think it's fine as long as they have considered all possible dangers and done something to prevent them i dont see a problem with that situation.

How often do multiples births work out?
Q. I was under the impression that having more than two babies at once was very dangerous and usually resulted in children with serious medical problems.

But lately I've been hearing about septuplets (7 babies) and octuplets (8 babies) born healthy. How common is this? What percentage of multiples births actually work out?

A. As far as octuplets born there has only been two sets and 1 died from the first set. I haven't heard too many sets of septuplets. It is very dangers the more babies you carry. Most doctors will advise selective reduction to ensure the babies you do keep will be carried as close to full term as possible to ensure the babies won't have issues such as blindness and lung issues. Women that high order multiples are put into the hospital very early for bed rest and are highly monitored.

My baby has a paralyzed vocal cord and can't make any sound. Any suggestions on products to use at night?
Q. I am looking for a product to use at night so I can know when my 6-week old son is moving even though I can't hear him. I want something that can go in the crib or something that can monitor him and notify me when he is moving so I can attend to him.

A. The only thing I can think of is those toys you can get that when bubs starts moving they play a song to help resettle the baby...not sure where you can get them

If you leave this question open for a bit (a couple of days) I'll do some research and also ask my collegues (I am a speech pathologist so I have some contacts that might know something) and I'll get back to you

EDIT....my understanding of the angel care monitor is that it alerts you if the baby is NOT moving/breathing....I had a similar monitor so I am assuming they are they same

EDIT....

Sorry, I haven't really been able to come up with much. I researched the toy I was talking about and I guess it's no surprise that it is voice activated so kinda useless for you. The other ideas some colleagues came up with included:

*** Having some sort of noise maker attached to bubs....would need to be something safe and attached in a way that it could not come off and cause any danger to bubs... something so that when bubs wriggles, it makes a noise....the con of this is that bubs might wiggle but not actually wake.

*** Co-sleeping as someone suggested.... either in your bed or in an arms reach style cosleeper.

*** similar to the noise maker idea.... having something crinkly under the sheet so that when bubs moves it makes a noise.

There are some products out there however they require intentional movements....good for when bubs is a bit older but right now, he is unable to intentionally push a button.

I hope that helps some and I'll continue to keep my ear out for anything that might work in your situation....good luck!

How can a tame out my baby Savannah Monitor?
Q. He/she i dont know what it is is a very agreesive animal always hissing hippping but no really snapping. only in her cage out of it is kinda the same but she is a little more tolorible but harldy at all, it is a very small lizzrd i would say about 10 inches. Any one wanna help me?

A. Time and patience.

A small animal like that is of course going to be terrified of something 10x the size of it and is going to defend itself.

If you havent done already, leave him completely alone in the tank for a week or so to settle in and start eating properly. If you have done, then just ignore that bit ;)

If you are afraid of getting bitten or whipped then wear thick gloves, pick up the monitor and hold him firmly so he cannot escape but not so much as to hurt him. After a while he will calm down in your grip; when he does put him back in his tank. Monitors are clever; this will teach him that flipping out will not get him back where he feels safe.

When i got my baby i sat in the bath (...not water) with him. There was no way he could escape - i sat very very still and let him wander about wherever her wanted. That way he could get used to my smell and my presence and know i wasnt going to hurt him.
Things like this take time and after a week or so of daily 'baths' and seeing me every morning and night to switch his lights on and off he started to settle and hiss less.

Just be patient - every day put the time in to handle him and eventually he will realise you are not going to hurt him. Dont be jumpy about things either; as you grow more confident so will he.

Do not hand feed either.
This will get the monitor to associate your hands directly with food and he is highly likely to bite you even if you dont have food.
I use tongs to feed mine; he associates the tongs with food and me with exploring time.

I've had him since he was a 6 inch whippy, hissy little gremlin, now he is 2ft+ and soft as anything!

What difference do all the Wireless Internet Laptop Cards have? Which is the best? Why ?

Q.

A. They all use 802.11.
The difference is that some have 802.11 a, 802.11 b, 802.11 g or 802.11a/b or 802.11 a/b/g.

802.11b and 802.11g standards use the 2.4 GHz (gigahertz) band, operating (in the United States) under Part 15 of the FCC Rules and Regulations. Because of this choice of frequency band, 802.11b and 802.11g equipment will suffer interference from microwave ovens, cordless telephones, Bluetooth devices, baby and security monitors, amateur radio and other appliances using this same band. The 802.11a standard uses a different 5 GHz band, which is clean by comparison. 802.11a devices are not affected by products operating on the 2.4 GHz band.

802.11a is best at home but not all public access point transmits in 802.11a.

we found some baby cotton tails and we know the mom but she wiln't go back the are only 1 day old?
Q. we know what they eat but will they sevive

A. i'll give you the same answer i give everyone who calls me to take their bunnies.

chances are, mom is still caring for them. unless you have a confirmed dead body, assume she's still around. the momma only comes twice a day to feed them (after dark & right before dawn), and you aren't likely to notice it when she does. the rest of the time, she leaves them where they are.

it doesn't matter if you have touched them or disturbed the nest - she will not abandon them for smelling you on them. your scent pales in comparison to the babies' scents. theirs overpowers yours to her nose, so she will in all likelihood come back to feed them just as she did before. just leave them where they are (or put them back if you have moved them) so she can keep caring for them.

caring for wild baby bunnies is not as simple as giving them clover and grasses or warm milk formula. babies do NOT respond well to the shock of different food and being handled by humans. even if you do everything right, more than likely they die. the trauma that the change brings is simply too great for them to survive. even i have a difficult time keeping more than a handful alive, and i've been doing it for years with training and close vet monitoring.

their BEST chance at survival is to leave them for mom and keep an eye on them & keep kids & pets away from the nest. give them a few days to see if they are still looking good. if you see a dead mom somewhere near, then call your state's DNR/Wildlife Services they'll get a hold of a rehabber to care for them.

otherwise, the chances of them surviving (especially if they are only a day old) are very close to zero. leave them be. the mom will be back.

My 4-year-old has been displaying behavior issues. Is this normal?
Q. Sorry in advance for the long description!

My 4-year-old daughter has always been a very high energy, high maintenance child. She is very intelligent and highly imaginative, but she needs constant stimulation and demands a lot of attention, which is difficult, because my husband and I both work full time. Recently, she's been displaying some behavior that concerns us. Every time I turn my back, she does something to make her 1-year-old brother cry, whether it means taking a toy he's playing with or restraining him somehow (including picking him up, blocking him in with pillows, etc). She gets frustrated easily and cries over everything that upsets her (which may very well be normal 4-year-old behavior).

My daughter is usually pretty good about letting me leave her at day care in the morning. (She and her brother attend the same day care center.) However, the past two times I have tried to leave her with her grandmother (whom she adores, and who adores her), my daughter gets hysterical. This morning, when I tried to leave, she began crying and clinging to me and asked me, "What happens if Mee-ma turns off all the lights and I get scared?" Mee-ma has never done that before! My daughter's imagination seems to be running away with her. She often poses frightening scenarios like this to me. More than once, she has expressed concern that a member of her family is going to die.

My daughter has also recently been giving me a lot of trouble going to bed at night. We have a well established routine, but even after I get her into bed, it takes 30-60 minutes or more to get her to go to sleep. She comes up with every excuse in the book to come out of her room or get me to come in. She and her brother share a room, so her behavior sometimes results in her waking the baby. Her newest "surefire" method to get me into her room is saying plaintively (so I can hear it over the baby monitor), "Nobody likes me. Nobody wants me around." Of course, I can't sit there and let her say these things to herself; I have to go in and comfort her.

My mother-in-law says this is the same behavior my husband displayed when he was young (especially tormenting the baby, which he did to his sister). However, when he was my daughter's age, his father had a stroke, and their family was thrown into turmoil. His mother was diagnosed bipolar, and he and sister were also diagnosed with the disorder. My husband had a very difficult childhood and was even sent off to boarding school as a teenager due to his behavior. Our family life is stable in comparison. I am loathe to consider the idea that there could be something "wrong" with my little girl, but it concerns me that she is displaying this kind of behavior and I am looking for some advice. I'm trying my very best to be patient with her, because she is a very special, intelligent, sensitive girl who needs stability, patience, and understanding in her life.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

A. I don't have any kids but i would try just spending some time with your daughter. take her to a movie or something 4 yr olds like. maybe just bond and talk to her... the behavior does not sound that bad though... good luck..

Fair Settlement for Car Accident?
Q. My wife & unborn child were in a car accident 5 weeks ago. The girl at fault swirved into oncoming traffic due to self admitted driver inattention(swirved to miss a line of stopped cars)and struck the drivers side of my wife's car as she was turning left onto our street. My wife was rushed to the hospital & spent an hour in the ER and 5 hours hooked to a fetal monitor. My wife's left wrist was injured(X-ray taken at hospital showed no breaks but sprained). The baby had a steady heartbeat, but they could not say with certainty if she was uninjured. Our baby was born 9-8-07 and seems to have no injuries from the accident.

The girl at fault never notified her insurance company of the accident. We had to notify them after getting the police report. All our calls to her insurance company went unreturned for 3 weeks, when they finally gave us a rental car. They wrote us a check for our car(totalled). I'd rather not involve a lawyer so I want to know what an acceptable offer would be.
They offered a reasonable amount for the car. $4,250 for a 1996 Toyota Camry with 250,000 miles. We took the check, but have not signed a release. They have not made an offer for pain and suffering, or injuries as they were waiting for the baby to be born. Our insurance paid for medical bills which we need restitution ($2000). BTW, the girl at fault has still not contacted her insurance company, and all contact numbrs they have for her are disconnected.

A. wow, i sure like coastcowboy, he is on the money with his answers.

as for the value of your camry sounds pretty good for the year and number of miles; you can go to NADA and Edmunds site and put in your auto for the value of your auto. there is a "misnomer" that insurance companies use kelly blue book. they dont, since blue book is for retail or pristine autos, not the normal car we all drive. the insurance company should have provided you with the details of how they came to value your auto;
ie; options, miles, wear/tear etc;
it should also note they did a comparison of other vehicles like yours in your area;

as for signing the release, it should only be for the auto only.

as for your wife injuries, congrats to your new baby. the insurance company wanted to verify that the baby was ok before any injury settlement would be offered. the emergency room did what they were supposed to do to verify your baby was not in harms way and your wife had a wrist sprain that was probably fine after a week; so they will offer a settlement to repay the medical bills your insurance paid and a "little" to your wife for her pain/suffering; but dont expect to take a vacation on this offer or you will be paying your credit card bills 6 months from now;

i have worked for 4 different insurance companies; 3 of them were "non standard", which means the people are high risk;
it is not uncommon for these insureds to not report an accident; their premiums are usually 2 to 3 times more than a "standard" policy would charge for the same coverage. it is not uncommon for these people to have 2 or 3 accidents w/in the 6 month policy.

the insurance company has a contract with the insured; they must 1st verify with the insured the details of the accident to verify she was at fault. since this girl did not report the accident, nor did she cooperate, they had at one point to make a decision to accept liabilty and pay for your damages and rental car. you are lucky that they did; since the policy states that the insured must cooperate in the investigation of any claim; they could have denied your claim for non-cooperation and i have worked in companies that have done this; at that point, your insurance company would have stepped in, subrogated her insurance company or gone after the girl individually.

be thankfull, they are trying to settle.

Why does WIFI lose quality and speed the longer you stay on?

Q. Seriously, I'm computer retarded and just wondering why it does that. It goes from 54mb/sec to 10 or less sometimes.

A. If you speed is dropping then it is nothing to do with how long you have been connected it must be down to another problem.

Generic advice for improving wif reception [you give no info on the router or what device you are connecting with]

To start with the basic rule is to position the wifi router as high and as centrally as possible in your house.

1] Try changing the broadcast channel from the wireless setup interface for your router/modem.You can normally access this by typing "http://192.168.0.1/" into your browsers search bar and then look for the wireless settings menu.
You don't say if your router can use the 5GHz frequency or just the 2.4GHz. The best channels in the 2.5GHz spectrum are 1,6, 11, or 13 as they have less overlap with the other channels.

There is a useful article here about how to get the best performance by selecting the best channel.: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/21132/cha

If you have an android smarthphone, or a friend does, then install the Wifi Analyzer app free from android market and use it to scan for the best channel and change your routers broadcast channel accordingly. This app will aslo show you all the wifi signals in range that your neighbours are using, so you can select a different channel to them, making a stronger signal for you. https://market.android.com/details?id=co

2] You can use a tool like Nirsofts totally free WirelessNet View to look at all the local wireless signals that are within range and may be competing with your own router and interfering with reception. from here: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wireless_ne

3] You can buy a Wi-Fi booster like D-Link 645 Smartbeam, here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/D-Link-DIR-645-W
Devices such as these can actually boost the wifi signal by using multiple beams that bounce of the walls and are intelligently directed toward whatever device [smarhphone, laptop, tablet] you are using on wifi.

4] If your using the 2.4GHz frequency and not the 5GHz then other devices that use this frequency band can alsso interfere with your reception [eg baby monitors and microwave ovens use 2.4GHz]. Try and make sure that none of these devices are situated between your router and your wifi receiver eg laptop, tablet, smarthphone etc

Why is my internet so much slower on my laptop?
Q. I'm with virgin, both my computer & my laptop are connected to my via wireless connection. But my laptop gets but a small fraction of the speed my computer does.

Any ideas on how to sort this out?

A. I assume that although you say both the laptop and desktop use a wifi connection that they are not situated in the same place. It is likely that the signal strength will vary in different positions in your house. If the router supports the latest draft n wifi standards and so does the wifi adapter in your desktop then check that your laptops adapted supports 8011n too. If it only supports earlier wifi standards like 8011.g then this is much slower and the reason for the difference.

If the wifi chip in the laptop also supports the 8011n wifi standard then there are several things that can affect wifi signal and things you can do to try and improve things

To start with the basic rule is to position the router as high and as centrally as possible in your house.

How to increase wifi signal?
Q. So I have a netgear wireless router connecting to my PS3. It gets like a 40-50% signal and wont always connect. How can I increase this signal? I dont really want to buy anything but will getting a cheap antenna for the PS3 do much? Should i aim the router antenna at the playstation? Making a sheet out of aluminium foil and placing it behind the router didnt seem to do much. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

wifi not working till technician is baffled?
Q. it's ok if i connect it with cabel, but the wifi has a problem.. i called the operator but she said everything is alright.. so i changed the modem, but it still won't work.. so i hired a technician to handle the settings.. it went well at first, but the problem came back.. even my technician is confused.. even the troubleshooter won't work.. what's going on? are there external wave frequencies disturbing my wifi?

do wireless landlines pick up yours or your neighbors phone conversation?

Q. i dont have unlimted minutes on my cell phone.my parents believe that if you have a wireless your neighbors could listen to the conversation know i cant talk on the phone while on the computer or go to my room im going to show my parents the anwsers please help convince them that a wireless land line is better

A. the first cordless phones operated around 48Mhz as well as baby monitors and the like...and were easy for people to listen in on your conversations.. it was not uncommon for a baby monitor to pick up your conversation, or for 2 cordless phones to hear each other....

the 900 Mhz phones solved some of those problems... but people with radio scanners (police scanners) could still listen in on your calls...

DSS technology stopped that... and many newer 900 Mhz phones come with DSS...

also most 2.4Ghz phones have DSS or FHSS, aside from that, most radio scanner equiptment only goes up to 1.3Ghz - however these phones may interfere with WiFi

5.8Ghz phones also normally come with DSS or FHSS... and again are outside the range of most radio scanners.... however, because they are a higher frequency the range is less...

DECT phones operate within the 1.9Ghz range, are immune to interference from other devices, and provide the best range, clarity, and security...

so the only way that a neighbor can listen in to your conversation with a cordless phone that you purchace today would be if you bought a 900Mhz phone that did not have DSS....

Long range cordless home phone?
Q. I used to have a 900mhz phone that had a range of several hundred feet. Now that it has dies though I have not been able to find another system that works any where near as well as my old one. I have tried two systems that work on 5.8ghz from Uniden and Pansonic but both have horrible range. I am considering tiring the new DECT 1.9ghz phones but i am not sure that will work any better for me. Whatever I get needs to be able to be purchased and possibly returned locally in the Charolote North Carolina area.
In particular any recommendations for specific phones?

A. In general, you can expect better clarity as you move from 46-49 MHz models (which are overcrowded with baby monitors and walkie-talkies) to 900 MHz models (which most homes use for cordless phones) to 2.4 GHz models. The primary benefit of 5.8 GHz models is the avoidance of interference with 802.11b wLANs and microwaves. If interference is your primary concern, make sure you purchase a fully 5.8 GHz phone.2 Otherwise, a dual transmission phone will give you better battery life.

As for range, here are some average maximum distances for the different technologies. Keep in mind that these numbers are very subjective and depend on factors such as obstructions, frequency interference, transmission technology, and even weather. The higher figure listed assumes ideal conditions are present.

46-49 MHz - 40 to 250 feet
900 MHz - 75 to 400 feet
900 MHz w/spread spectrum - 200 to 1500 feet
2.4 GHz w/spread spectrum - 300 to 2000 feet
5.8 GHz w/spread spectrum - 300 to 2000 feet

In addition to their other advantages, the 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz frequency bands are above the range that most scanners can intercept, making it much more difficult for eavesdroppers to listen to your conversations.

Does anyone know the frequincies of At&t cordless phones?
Q.

A. not understanding why you need the frequencies for...

the 1st gen cordless phones had 25 channels, around 40-50 mhz... not many of these phones are in use any longer, but the actual channels are listed many places online....

900mhz phones operate on a much larger range of channels in the 900 mhz range, with the handset and base usually using 2 diffrent frequencies, they are mostly between 900mhz, and 925mhz....

DSS was introduced several years after many insecure 900 mhz phones were already in use, and many people still have 900 mhz phones with out DSS (i have seen radio shack still selling these phones for about $20 less than a year ago) DSS encrypts the signal into a digital signal, and changes channels constantly, to reduce or eliminate possible eavesdropping.

2.4 ghz I am uncertain as to how many frequencies that these phones use, but 2.4 ghz = 2400 mhz so they are within that range... along with wifi networks, and while you are unable to change the channel your phone operates on, if there is interfearance between the phone and wifi network, you can change the channel that the wifi operates on, with the routers control pannel accessed by putting 192.168.1.1 into your web browser and entering the router user name and password *usuallay admin / password*

5.8 ghz phones operate within 5800mhz . and like 900 mhz DSS phones, and 2.4 ghz phones they are digital, and change channels automaticllay to the clearest channel, to my knowledge there is no consumer product that is capable of reciving 2400mhz or 5800mhz and listening in to these conversations.... \

DECT phones operate within 1.9ghz or 1900mhz....

as the lower the frequency the further the range, and longer battery life you will recieve, the best phones that are sold today are the 900 mhz phones, however, for security, the best phone to purchave, with the 2nd to best range is the DECT 1.9 ghz phone.. also the DECT phone will not get interfearance with your wifi network...

unsure what you need this info for.. but FYI if you plan on using a radio scanner to pick up phone conversations...
1- it is illegal to listen in on or record a phone conversation to which you are not a part of...
2- if number 1 didnt scare you... most people now have 2.4 or 5.8 cordless phones, which make it very difficult to find something to listen to (but then again, there are those baby monitors...)
3- most phone conversations are just not worth listening to any how... most conversations between people are boring..

what does 5.8 GHz cordless phones mean?
Q. what is the advantage of buying onewith these feaures?

A. 5.8 Ghz is the HIGHEST frequency available for cordless phones ... so if all other factors were equal, it would be the worse choice for a cordless phone, since the higher the frequency the less range you get, or higher battery consumption to get equal distances as a lower frequency..

however, all things are NOT equal... 2.4Ghz is an over crowded frequency, not only including WiFi, wireless cameras, baby monitors, wireless doorbells, microwave ovens, and many other wireless consumer electronics. the 5.8Ghz range is less crowded, although it does share its RF with some wireless consumer electronics. if you have WiFi it is the better alternative to a 2.4Ghz phone, and cheaper than the better alternative which would be a 1.9Ghz DECT6.0 phone..

How can I stop my cordless phone from interfering with my wireless router?

Q. I have 2.4 ghz spread spectrum cordless phone that autoselects the clearest channel everytime you use the phone and there is no way to change the channel manually. I also have a linksys 2.4 ghz wireless router. Using the cordless phone renders my wifi useless 9 times out of 10. I have tried to change the routers wireless channel (possible values are 1-11 I think) but that did not solve the problem. Does anyone know what I can do to prevent this interference?

A. Each device uses the same frequency band (as do garage door openers, baby monitors, Web cams, ....).

You can change frequency bands for one or the other. Use a 5Mhz phone, or a 5MHz band WiFi gear (802.11a).

Reduce the relative signal strength seen by the 802.11b/g stuff you've got. Move the phone to the other end of the house. Move the laptop (or whatever) closer, leaving the phone in the same place, ... Add an antenna (probably a corner reflector (chicken wire may be a perfectly sensible material) for the rubber ducky type of antenna design most commonly seen) to both ends of the WiFi link (you may not have to physically crack open the radios at either end, but note that this dodge increases signal strenght in one direction (and does the same to receiver sensitivity). Since both the phone handset(s) and the mobile WiFi device (a laptop, probably) is also mobile, this isn't any kind of universally adequate dodge. Find a way to reduce the phone's signal strength (probably not possible to non-techie types) unless it's possible to say, put soeme absorbing or reflecting material between the phone and the WIFi radios. An experimental bronze foil covered wall, perhaps. Ought to work well if you can keep the two radio types out of each other's effective range. May not be possible in some kinds of interior decorating environments. consult with those in charge before trying anything like this.

Another dodge ito try to arrange that the WiFi antennas are a 90 degree polarizatino difference than the phone antennas (as usually used; if you have sprawling teenagers, this may not be predictable).
Since both devices operate (or probably do) in a spread spectrum mode, each will appear to the other to be a general increase in the noise level against which they must work. Changing channels (if possible) isn't likely to be very effective. Too much noise, no radio receiver will be able to make sense of what it hears.

i have to keep telling my wireless connection to connect?
Q. I have a ZyXel Router connected to one PC and that works fine. No loss of connection.
I have a Belkin 802 11g Wireless Card in the other PC. It is this PC that keeps loosing connection.
I have done a number of things to try to stop this from happening - from enabling to disenabling Windows to find a connection; disenabling and enabling windows zero wireless configuration.
Getting fed up now!

A. The most likely cause of your problem is radio interference. A WiFi card is just a radio transceiver, and they are susceptible to interference from other devices, like cordless phones and baby monitors, and especially, from other WiFi networks. With the proliferation of WiFi access points in neighborhoods and apartment buildings, more and more people are having this kind of problem. You should also keep in mind that the clear air broadcast limit for WiFi access points as around 300 feet. If you're inside a structure, walls, furniture, and equipment limit the range even farther. I have one laptop computer that won't pick up a signal, or gets a very low signal, where my other ones work just fine. I have to move it closer to the router to get a good signal.

If you go into the configuration utility for your router - I can't be more specific than this - you should be able to change the channel it broadcasts on. That may help your problem. You won't need to do anything with the computers, since they'll find the channel on their own. If it doesn't help, try a different WiFi card. They work best when they're made by the same company as the router.

How can i get the highest possible Internet speed/dl speed?
Q. I have wlan connection with a nominal transfer rate of 54 MBit/s. Internetfrog etc. say that my dl speed is abt. 1.8 MBit/s. How can i get the most out of my connection? Or else, what do i have to change to get the highest possible speed? Thanks for any response!
whizip

A. go to speedtest.net get an accurate speed - and then make sure all your phone extensions have line filters - there is no large amounts of excess cable and make sure all connections are secure, also make sure there is no interference from microwaves other wifi networks or wireless baby monitors

How can i make WIFI go faster because it always seems to go slow?
Q.

A. Wireless internet is typically slower than wired.

Try to minimize sources of potential interference such as radios, baby monitors and cell phones as these can all lead to signal attenuation. Other then that you can upgrade your wireless access point or your NIC (N+ is the current leading technology. Or even move closer to the access point.

How often can you listen to a babys heartbeat (while pregnant) without causing harm?

Q. I bought one of those "baby heartbeat monitor"s (like the doctors have) and we asked the doctor if it would do any harm to the baby or my daughter and he said no. But we just got it today and already, we have listened to the heartbeat like 4 times for various family members. Is that too much?

A. nope, it shouldnt hurt the baby at all, so listen your little heart out ! it wont hurt you or baby. its awesome to hear the little heartbeat and know that theres a little one inside of you <3<3

When is it the best time to buy a baby heart monitor?
Q. I am 5 in a half weeks a long and I have been told you can hear a baby's heartbeat at 6 weeks along. But some say it's very faint. When is the best time to buy one?

A. It can be very hard to hear so early. I am at 13 weeks and just a couple of wks ago (so like 11 wks along) I was at my midwives and we still couldnt hear the HB. But I had heard it back in mid dec when I had my first ultrasound. Next time I go in (end of this month) we should FINALLY be able to hear it with the doppler. So dont get to bummed or frustrated if you cant hear it yet with the use of a doppler (normal way to hear it) I wouldnt buy any monitor yet. And talk to your dr, they can offer some advice in that area. My midwife says that its best to get one of the home dopplers or use a stethoscope for listening but not anything that creates sound waves like an ultrasound because too much use can be harmful to the baby, which some of those monitors use. I have a stethoscope from work but I dont figure ill be able to hear with that for a few more weeks or even longer. But I will def be doing something about hearing the heartbeat at home so I can keep track of the baby daily...or HOURLY lol! ;)

Anyone familiar with the differences in Kawasaki disease and autism? Is one easily treated with meds vs the?
Q. other not? It sounds like J Travolta's son with a round the clock nanny, baby monitor and bathroom door that chimed when opened, he was either very sick or not safe on his own or both?

A. my daugher had kawasaki disease. it has nothing to do with autism. it is NOT characterized by seizures. it is a temporary condition characterized by vasculitis - which is basically an inflammation of veins and arteries. the sickness lasted in my daughter for about 2 weeks when she was three and then it was over. we've had to have her heart checked once a year for any abnormalities, but that is it... and her case was very very severe (she barely survived). and no, it is not easily treated. they basically treat the symptoms with a series of immune deficiency drugs and maybe some others (depending on the symptoms) and hope for the best, but cannot treat the cause since they don't know what that is.

autism as far as i know is a disorder that is not temporary like kawasaki. the things you're mentioning about the travoltas sounds more like worry over seizures or behavior (as with autism). they would do nothing in helping a kid who had had kawasaki.

the only thing that would apply to helping a kid who had kawasaki would be to have a constant heart monitor since the only known long term affects are heart defects from severe stress from the sickness at such a young age.

Normal for fetal heart rate to be slower in the morning?
Q. I am starting to monitor my babies heart rate with a doppler, is it normal for the babies heart rate to be slower in the morning, and speed up in the afternoons?

A. well its normal for it to change threwout the day, when your baby is less active it will be a little slower then when he/she is moving.

I'm struggling to find a baby monitor that works in our apartment. We've tried 3 kinds and they don't work.?

Q. We always have terrible feedback and pick up other baby monitors, but never our own. I've heard there is a difference in short and long range monitors. Does anyone know anything about this, and if so, are there any monitors you recommend under $40?

A. There are two problems you may be experiencing. The first is your monitor is too low tech and is getting electrical interference or noise from electronics, power lines etc... The second is your monitor may be too "good" and has a large range, which encompasses other parents with monitors on the same frequencies.

Before you buy any monitor, make sure the store will let you return it if there is interference.

First I would try a good "low tech" monitor like the Fisher Price Surround Sound Lights and Sounds Monitor, $27.99 for 1 Receiver. It uses the 49 MHz band, which not many other things use now and could be the least expensive answer to your troubles.

If that doesn't work for you, skip the 900 MHz monitors and try the 2.45 - 2.54 GHz models, there is almost no difference in cost and a much better chance at clear reception. Models to look for are: The First Years True Choice ($40), Graco I-Vibe, Summer Infant Simply Clear Digital Audio Monitor
($49.99)

If these don't work the next level would be monitors with DECT technology. These are "guaranteed to be interference-free, and most clients who have them have had great luck with them. These usually run $80 and up. But I doubt you will need to go this route.

Hope this helps,

Alan

Sub-woofer is making a horrible noise when no media is playing?
Q. I have never had any problems with this subwoofer before. I recently moved houses and setup my system there. Everything seemed to be working beautifully until I woke up in the middle of the night to horrible feedback coming from the subwoofer. I immediately turned the power off and it stopped. So, I tried to switch the subwoofer to "Auto" mode which kind of puts the speaker in a sleep mode until it is being used. This also did not solve the problem. When music is played on subwoofer, it sounds great, but once it ends, after a while, a feedback "beat" is heard and repeated over and over. Any suggestions? This wasn't happening before the move.

A. Hmmm, it could be many things... I have a JBL speaker system with a powered sub and I had a similar type of feedback humm, but I discovered it had to do with the auto sleep mode. Oddly enough (like you) this only happened to me after moving into a new home, go figure! So aside from some trial and error with the power save feature of the subwoofer, it's time to dig deeper.

Do you get normal results when you run a test-tone test, if your head unit has this feature? First, if you don't own a second one, see if you can borrow another subwoofer and swap it out temporarily. Try to rule out an issue with the speaker itself, if another sub does the same, you have an issue with your head unit or cabling or power. Are you using a halfway decent power distribution system or power strip, like a monster power strip with good noise filtering? In the new house, where you set up your system, are there any sources of interference nearby like from utilities or appliances or computers? Are you using a good quality cable to conect the sub to the head unit? I realize it worked fine before, but it could be a cabling issue if there's an external electromagnetic interference problem near the new home that didn't exist at the old home, like from nearby communications equipment, alarm systems, wireless networks, cordless phones, baby monitors, wireless CCTV systems, etc.

Or it could be dirty power for these same types of reasons, so be sure to use a good power strip/filter. Expect to spend a few hundred dollars on a good one. Myself, I use the Monster Power HTS 3600. And make sure the outlets where you have everything plugged in is properly grounded. Use a tester or have someone who knows home electrical confirm it for you. Ideally, this will also be a dedicated 15 or 20 amp outlet with nothing else on it like lighting, etc.

How do I fix the buzz on my PS3?
Q. Ever since I got my PS3 in November of last year, it's had a light buzz that annoys the crap out of me. I've put it on three different TVs, and they all share the buzz problem, as well as lines scrolling through the picture. My question is, simply: How do I get my sound and picture working normally?

A. I had this issue as well. It seems to be interference by another electrical device. In my case it was the baby monitor. I found a new plug for that. Does your PS3 share a power outlet with something else? If so, try putting your PS3 on a power bar, or its own outlet.

How do I improve a routour range and speed and it has no attena?
Q. It's a at&t model 2wire

A. Try placing the router in a higher central location, avoid physical obstructions whenever possible, also avoid reflective surfaces whenever possible. Some Wi-Fi signals literally bounce off of windows, mirrors, metal file cabinets and stainless steel countertops, lessening both network range and performance.

Install the router at least 3 feet away from other home appliances such microwave ovens, cordless telephones, baby monitors, and home automation equipment like X-10 devices.

Likewise, install the unit away from other electrical equipment that also generates interference, such as electric fans, motors, and flourescent lighting.

1] Try changing the broadcast channel from the wireless setup interface for your router/modem.You can normally access this by typing "http://192.168.0.1/" into your browsers search bar and then look for the wireless settings menu.

What are the essential baby items?
Q. I am making my baby registry and don't know what is essential. I am a single mother so I need things that will make my life as easy as possible, but I don't know if a bottle sterilizer or something like that is a waste of time, and money. Thanks

A. Here's a good resource: http://metropolitanmama.net/2009/04/unnecessary-baby-products-a-list-of-things-not-to-register-for/

There are several other lists on the web of unnecessary baby items. Just google it.

You don't need any bottle-related items at all if you can stay home with the baby and breastfeed until the baby is eating solids (6 months). As a single mom, you probably will have to buy bottles so you can give the baby to a caregiver while you work and then you may need more of the accoutrements that go along with bottles. I don't think you need a bottle sterilizer though. Most bottles can be put through the dishwasher, and some can be boiled. You also don't need a bottle warmer, since you can just get the bottle out a little earlier than you need it and let it warm to room temperature, or put it in a bowl of hot water.

You also don't need a designated changing table. Any dresser or countertop that's a good height for you can be outfitted with a nonskid changing pad. Or get several thin change pads (the kind you can just roll up) and use them to change the baby wherever you are; bed, couch, floor, seat of the car, etc. That's probably what you'll end up doing anyway. Just make sure to never take your hand off your baby when you're changing him/her on an elevated surface. That goes for changing tables as much as anything.

Also, you don't need crib bumpers, crib bedding, pillows, or stuffed animals for the crib. The baby should have nothing in the crib except a well-fitting mattress and a fitted mattress sheet. Anything else is a suffocation/SIDS risk. There is a lot of evidence that crib bumpers are not safe for young infants and yet they're still being sold all over, so parents may not be aware of that. To keep baby warm, register for swaddle blankets, receiving blankets to swaddle baby in, or sleepsacks/nightgowns.

A baby tub is nonessential. You can take a bath with your baby, or bathe them in the sink until they are old enough to take baths in the bathtub. However, baby tubs can be a convenient item since they may make bathtime a bit more comfortable or pleasant for the baby or relaxing for you. They sell some bathtubs that look like buckets, usually called Euro baths. These allow the baby to sit up in the water and are said to mimic a womb-like environment for baby. I have never used one, but I have heard them recommended for colic.

If you have a smaller house or apartment, baby monitors are also unnecessary. Or if you have a smartphone, you can get an app that turns your phone into a baby monitor; you just need to have a second phone.

You definitely need some kind of diapers, whether cloth or disposable, and you need a car seat. Actually, you only need a car seat if you are giving birth in a hospital and/or planning to take your child anywhere in a car. Someone who lives in New York might not be required to have a car seat if it is clear that they are walking home from the hospital. Otherwise hospitals require that you have a properly installed car seat before you leave the hospital. If you're having a home birth, your midwife may or may not require that you have a carseat, but of course you need one if you ever want to drive anywhere with your baby or toddler. Anyone who owns a car should own a car seat. I wouldn't register for clothes or baby blankets because you'll get tons of those as gifts. Diapers, clothes/blankets, and a car seat are really all your absolute essentials. You have a lot of freedom from there as to what products you want for convenience.

For convenience, I would consider registering for a wrap, sling, or baby carrier, wipes (these are pretty essential, but you can always get by with wet paper towels), disposable diaper sacks to control odor, towels, bottles, breast pump, breastfeeding pillow like Boppy or My Brest Friend, nipple cream, a high chair, bibs, burp cloths, grooming items like a nasal aspirator, thermometer, nail clippers, etc., stroller, crib, crib mattress, at least two sets of crib sheets, rocker/glider (for you), footstool or ottoman (for breastfeeding comfort), a waterproof mattress protector for your bed if you will nurse the baby in bed or have him/her sleep with you, breast pads, nursing tops, a food mill if you don't already have one (and want to make your own baby food), baby gate (if you have stairs or unsafe areas in your home), outlet plugs, pacifiers, baby or toddler dishes and utensils, and baby shampoo/wash.

I would also highly recommend buying a few books for your child. You'll want to read to him/her and allow him/her to handle books to promote literacy, and kids tend to chew on library books so having a few favorites at home to let your baby handle and munch to his/her heart's content is a good idea.

Bouncers, swings, jumpers, activity mats, and toys are total extras. If you have a colicky baby or one that cries a lot even if you give him/her lots of love and attention, you may want to try these distractors. By the time you have a second kid, they will probably come in handy, and they can be useful as a safe place to put the baby while you shower, etc. so it's not a terrible idea to invest in one or two of these now. But they should be last on your list, since all your baby needs to entertain him/her in the first year is you. YOU are the best, most educational, most developmentally appropriate toy your baby could ever own, so keep that in mind when picking out toys, even books.

How do you figure out what you want to do ?
Q. As a career? How do you decide what you will go to school for, what school, and what career you will like?

A. Go online and look at the websites for several colleges-state colleges, big and little state and private schools, and then look at the majors thaT those colleges offer. I didn't even know till I met my freshman roommate that you could major in speech and hearing theraspy and be a speech therapist.
You'll be surprised at all of the choices. Then, think about what your strengths are. If you're good at math and science, you might choose a chemistry or biology major. If you're good at writing, consider an English major. If you want to live in a foreign country-major in a foreign language.

Whatever you major in in college will lead you toward a certain career field.

Another suggestion, check out books from the library that include descriptions of careers and see what careers suit your personality.

Last--do your homework. Here's some info I just found by just searching the key term "top careeers of the future" in Yahoo.

Yahoo lists the info below as some of the best future career fields:

Whats the scariest thing that has ever happened to you?

Q. Mine was having a ghost or something punching my back at night when I was a kid. Whats yours?

A. Seeing my baby son lying dead in the incubator of the Special Baby Care Unit whilst the nurses who were supposed to be watching him were sat there chatting - one even had her chair touching the incubator.
He looked as though he'd been rolled in flour, he was so white.
I remember hearing the apnoea monitor going off whilst walking down the long hallway to see him. Thing is, they go off all the time, often for no real reason, so the nurses had obviously gotton complacent because of that. Even I didn't think much of the sound of it other than to notice it, seeing as they went off so often...at least until I saw my son.
Fortunately, my shout alerted them and they quickly got him breathing again. He's still strong and healthy today, years down the line.

That experience, beats hands-down any and all the experiences I've had with non human entities, including the one that physically pushed me out the gates of a church that was closed for having been the place where ritualistic sacrifices of animals had taken place. Even the fear I felt as it followed me up the road away from the church, which was very real fear, of what seemed a very real 'thing', was NOTHING in comparison.

I keep hearing these weird noises in my grandparents basement?
Q. Like, my grandparents live in a big house. They remodeled their basement 2 years ago and it looks really good. But every time I walk past it I hear these weird noises. Like shattering of glasses. I run back up stairs and forget about it cause it's kinda creepy. Or when my grandma asks me to go turn off the light I see like shadows from the corner of the room. What is it? Is it haunted?

A. Well, for starters: ghost are a reality, not just a TV idea. I know because I lived in a haunted house for over 7 years. I had seen or heard ghost on a daily bases. The thought of a ghost doesnt mean demon. Ghost are like the living; there are good ghost and bad ghost; I have witnesses both. Then there are demons;and if you believe in god you had better believe in the devil. If not thats ok to, because they surly believe in you.
I use to think that ghost were just for TV until I had the unfortunate pleasure of moving in with them. The answer to the question in the back of your mind is " YES" you can PISS Them Off; not a good idea unles you wanmt a good case of the willies.
There is also the possability that you caught a glimps of the gardian angels watching over. My second house; third ghost:` My daughter had a regular visitor untill she was 3 years old. I lived in a new house, so nobody died in there. Every day she had a conversation with someone. I could hear voices through the baby monitor. My daughter could describe the person and had a name also. I did not know the name and could not find any information on that person either. How many toddlers can make up a first and last name?

Frankly it really don't matter what anyone thinks of my story. I know the truth and that is enough for me. I do have another theroy; maby your just crazy,LOL. Seriouly though, you may just be parinoid. just kidding. enjoy your ghost.

Have you ever heard strange sounds on your baby monitor?
Q. Such as Electronic Voice Phenomenom (EVP's) from ghosts.

A. My sister has. She would pick up her neighbour's phone conversations quite often. One time it wasn't a phone conversation though... it was a knocking sound and a man's voice saying hello... nobody was at the door.

What is the ghost mumbling into the baby monitor in insidious ? ?
Q. The only part I completly understand is " I want him , I want him NOW . " But I don't understand anything else . Btw , I asked out of pure boredom . Haha (:

A. There's nothing you can do
nothing you can do

I want it !

Give me it !
Give me it !
I want it !

I want it now (roars)

Cali crying
Mother runs upstairs

I have two iPhones, the old iPhone 3g and the new iPhone 4s. now i wanted to use my old iphone 3g (iOs version updated) as a Home Spy Camera and wanted to watch my kids at home live stream to my new iPhone 4s while im at work. i also got my Home Wifi network. is there any best iphone application out there for this matter? or is it possible to use my Home IP address to use and access it for this concept?

A. There are many training videos telling us how to make iphone as home spy camera on line.
Um...I've found two:
1. http://www.wonderhowto.com/how-to-use-iphone-as-spy-camera-423938/
2. http://www.wonderhowto.com/how-to-make-iphone-secret-spy-camera-423940/
The second video looks like very easy to access, but I don't know if it is useful for you.

If these two ways are not fit, I suggest you to buy a Baby Monitor or Home Spy Camera. You can visit this online store:
http://www.accessbuy.com/wholesale-Baby-Monitor_120.html
http://www.accessbuy.com/wholesale-IP-Camera_113.html
It's a wholesaler, so its price is very low.

How do I set up my Mac's iCam to video my puppies while I'm at work?
Q. I have 4 bottle babies I would like to monitor while I am at work to see what they are up to and I have an iMac with the iCam inside. Is there a way to set it up so I can view the puppies from my work computer?

A. You can download Orb for Mac here:
http://corp.orb.com/download/Orb20Setup.dmg
which will let you stream just about anything from your computer (including a webcam) to a browser, your phone, gaming console, etc.
As long as your work doesn't block it, you can get to the stream by logging into mycast.orb.com and opening the stream with your work computer's video player, like windows media player on windows.
If it is blocked and you have a capable phone, like an iPhone, BlackBerry, etc. you can watch it there.

How much would it cost to equip a home with deaf technology?
Q. If you were to add a special smoke detector, door bell lights, vibrating alarm clock, TTY, and other technologies, how much would that cost?

A. I am 100% Deaf.. So from experience
A TTY is VERYYYYY out dated, it is hardly used now. We have Video Phones now and the VRS (Video Rely Services) They are provided by the government by agencies such as Sorenson VRS or Purple communication or ZVRS. All require a TV or Computer and a high speed internet hookup. That cost is your own responsibility to provide. (19inch flat screen 299$ best buy, Dell ultrabook 699$ internet ATT 56$ with cell serivce a month)
The alarm clocks very in price depending on what other features you would like it to have. a basic alarm only function can be found between 25-60$ the more fancy one that can attach to lights or smoke detectors and provide multifunction I have found to be about 200$
The door bells are an easy hook-up and can be applied to all lights or certain ones in the house each adapter is about 10$
The smoke detectors can be bought at about 65$ for each room you want one in, or you can have a universal system installed professionally for about 500$
Baby monitors can be attached to the alarm clock as a separate function otherwise I find them hard to use.
For the cell phone, I have VRS on my Iphone and a discount on my bill because I do not need a voice plan. unlimited texting. there is also face-time and other things like skype and google plus. Also with phones there is a nation wide program called Cap-tell (if the Deaf person can and willingly uses voise to communicate) that captions everything on a landlines phone(or cell phone is you have sprint) that the hearing person on the other line is saying
ummm thats about it from what I can think of. Other wise for appointments and class and college stuff like that and for more direct communication I use a ASL (sign language) interpreter.
There are also High power hearing aids, cochlear implants and the BAHA (bone anchored hearing aid) if you want to try and "restore" some hearing, or use residual hearing you may have. but note these methods are case to case and are not always effective and can fail

Do you think corded phones are better than cordless phones?

Q. Silly question but I was just wondering what you thought. Cordless phones are annoying. They have horrible quality, receive interference from just about any other device sharing the same network. Plus they need power to operate, so they are useless in a power outage. And there also in some ways a security breach. You can easily listen into a conversation with a baby monitor. And to top it off they lack most features that corded phones offer. So what's your opinion?

A. You clearly haven't used a modern cordless phone. A good digital cordless phone is unlikely to see any interference with much of anything, the link quality is indistinguishable from wired, and no, you cannot hear the call with a baby monitor. That's not to say that those things have not historically been problems, just that they're problems largely solved in pretty much all modern gear.

One good idea is to get a cordless phone system that does not collide with a home network or your microwave. Look for a 5.8GHz digital phone or a DECT (runs around 1.9MHz), rather than a 2.4GHz phone, which uses the same ISM radio band as your microwave, 802.11 network, X-Box 360, Sony PS3, Bluetooth phone, etc.

With that all said, yeah, I have a few wired phones as well as the cordless. Of course, this may also depend on how you get your phone service... if you're using POTS (plain old telephone system) phones, a corded phone is useful in a blackout. If you're on VoIP, FiOS, DSL, or Cable, there's a strong likelihood your network gear in the house goes down anyway, so the cordless phone is unlikely to be an issue.

I'm very happy with my digital 5.8GHz phones... one wired connection for a base station that supports up to eight handsets (I have four), phone to phone intercom system built-in, great range, enough to cover my house (4200ft^2) and the immediate areas outside (if I want to go for a walk in the woods AND talk on the phone, I'll use my cell).

What are some things I need and some things I need to know about how to care a Savannah Monitor?
Q. Please list everything I need to care for a Savannah Monitor . I have been keeping reptiles for several years but this is going to be my first time keeping a monitor lizard. It is going to be a Savannah Monitor. I haven't got one yet but I am going to get one and I need a care sheet. Please help!!!

A. BASIC INFO:
- water proof solid topped 8 x 4 x 4 enclosure, 4 x 2 x 2 for babies and juvies. The enclosure should be solid wood to hold up heat, humidity and daily use stress. A plexi glass lid can be used. You can also use a feed trough (for cattle) as a base for your enclosure.

- two feet deep of a sand/soil mixture that is slightly damp so your sav can dig. They love to burrow and shouldn't be forbidden to do so.

-130F+ basking SPOT in the cage. Air temps should be 85F hot/ 70F cool.

- Provide multiple hiding spots, stacks of plywood work wonders for this, google "Retes Stacks"

Diet:
Rodents and bugs. That's it. No dog food, meat cuts, canned food, ground meats, innards, fish, monitor diets. You won't need any of that. A healthy monitor can and should be raised on mice, rats, roaches and crickets. Sure, you can use worms, but roaches are just so much more convenient.

Read VARANID'S (now J.H.) answers for LOTS of useful monitor care tips and information, he's Y! resident monitor expert, and a damn good one at that.

Does anyone know of a cordless child monitor that keeps up with 4 children?
Q. I need something that I carry so I can hear them at all times. We have a few "friends" that I need to keep a close eye (or ear) on! I guess I'm looking for a base for me. One that I can push a button to talk to all four kids. And four recievers that are always on. If their's are on at all times, they won't have to figure out how to communicate with me; I'll always hear them anyway. Thanks!

A. Ignore the first two posters...

I, am 19 and have 3 older sisters... You need to monitor you're children and a cell isn't going to do it.

I don't know of any monitors that can monitor 4 different channels at once... Fischer Price has many cordless monitors that can monitor 2 at a time, you can check out their website for that, or even go to your local gadgets store and ask there.

I think you are looking for 2 way radios though so that you can talk back. I have no help there other than there are some baby monitors with a talk back botton on the baby's end, that might help. Babys R'us usually can help you with that.

Based on your actual experience, what is the best baby video monitor for sale?
Q. I've heard so many different, mixed reviews. I'm mostly concerned about them not working with our wireless network (which I don't know how to tweak). If anyone has a good one that works well with a wireless network that doesn't cost TONS of money, please pass on the info. Thanks!

A. What do you mean working with wireless network? Most baby monitors are wireless, but they dont connect to a modem. Do you just mean without a cord or actually hooked up to a computer? I have been using Summer Infant Hand Held Video baby monitor for 6 month now and cant complain. It sees at night and has color. The monitor is hand held so you can carry it with you where you want to. At first the battery would last 3-4 days now it lasts 2 days, then you have to recharge, but it can be on when charging. I got mine on eBay at half the cost. If you still dont have your baby and dont need one ASAP. Start looking for deals. I got ours 2 month before the baby was born but it took me 4 weeks to get the deal I wanted.
Im also using a wireless connection on my laptop and there is no interference with the monitor, its working perfectly fine. Also it does NOT pick up cell phones, radios or other babies.

How much do we need to monitor radiation in our home?

Q. Ever since we had our daughter, my husband is obsessed with eliminating any sources of radiation in our house. He wants to turn off our wireless router, stop using cell phones, and stop using the video baby monitor in the nursery because he has read that all of these things give out harmful amounts of radiation, especially impacting the development of children's brains.
Is there any validity to his concerns? Or is he just being an overprotective parent?

A. he,s a little overboard, and misdirected. you get much more radiation on a long distance plane flight than you do from those sources. living in high elevations is a greater risk than living downwind from a nuclear power plant. you get more radioactivity from living downwind of a coal fired power plant.

listen to other cell phone conversations with a device?
Q. how is it possible to pick up cell phone conversations with a device, or a baby monitor.

A. Only analog cell phone conversations can be intercepted with a scanner. And almost no one has analog phones anymore. The newer CDMA or GSM phones use digital encoding techniques that prevent the casual listener from intercepting the conversations.

Baby monitors will NEVER overhear cell-phone conversations. Baby monitors operate at 900MHz or 2.4GHz; cell phones do NOT operate in those frequencies. However, home cordless phones DO operate in those frequencies, and these are the conversations that are often overheard by baby monitors. Newer cordless phones use the same digital encoding used by cell phones, so a new phone won't be overheard by a baby monitor.

Is it possible for a phone with a cord to pick up other phone conversations?
Q. I know it sounds odd, but I just picked up the phone a second ago to call my friend. There was no dial tone, but I heard another conversation on the other end. I know baby monitors can pick up cell phone conversations, but can a land line? And I get it, this is weird, but thanks if you can answer or have an opinion. xD

A. cross talk happens all the time.

if the other caller "over drives" the call by screaming into the phone or if the line is flooded with water, you can get cross talk.

Is there any way to prevent my cell phone conversations from being picked up on the baby monitor?
Q. Sometimes people call me at night and my conversations get picked up by the baby monitor in my parents room. Is there any way to keep this from happening? I'd rather not them hear some of the stuff me and my friends talk about. They keep the monitor on all night and I can't turn it off.

A. Is it cell or just cordless. A baby monitor shouldn't pick up a cell phone. In either case you can get a digital cell phone or a digital cordless phone. The baby monitor may pick up the signal, but it won't be able to decode the digital signal and no one will be able to understand a word you say.

Video baby monitor with ip capabilities?
Q. Twin baby girls on the way and my wife and I are looking for a video baby monitor. I would happily throw down some more dough if they made a video baby monitor with ip capabilities so I can watch them at work. I would buy just a good ip camera but I cant find anything that can link a wireless handset to it. If there are any solutions without having both a monitor and then a separate camera please let me know. Thanks.
The ip setup isnt the big deal. The problem is that we'd like to set up a portable monitor (as seen with regular vid baby monitors) to use around the house. The home portable monitor would be the primary use, while the ip settings will be my selfish way to still be with all three of my girls =)~... Let me know if theres means to accomplish =) thanks.

A. I have heard of a friend-of-friend who uses the following setup as a dog monitor (to watch the dog from home via webcam) which might work for you:

1. wireless IP camera setup to view whatever you're after,
2. create a skype account to run at home,
3. set the skype account to use the IP camera for video calls and
4. set the skype account to auto-answer incoming video calls.

he can then video-call from his own skype account at work to the dog's account and see what's going on throughout the day. and the camera can be moved to a new location without moving the computer.

the catch is, you can't operate the panning of the IP camera via skype. if you need this, perhaps something like Team Viewer might be better - it's a remote desktop app free for non-commercial use, that will let you remote in to your home computer and access the IP camera controls that way (Team Viewer is REAL easy to use).

for your case, I suppose you'd want sound as well, so seek out an IP camera with mic (if you want to hear them) or with both mic and speakers (if you want them to hear you too).

**Edit** Oh, I see what you mean - you want a portable receiver unit with a screen to relay the video to. I had a poke around and came up with not alot.

I can find wireless cameras with receivers (usually 4 cams + 1 receiver) - ie. glorified baby monitors,
and I can find a couple of iPhone apps to receive a signal from an IP Camera (see links below), but no IP Camera portable receiver.

What can I use to transmit noise?
Q. Well long story short, I'm scaring my friend. She's my neighbor and I live in the house next to her. Basically I need something that can make noises and can be controlled from another place. I considered a baby monitor (too expensive), or some kind of walkie talkie (probably not loud enough). If there is an app or something I have an iPad or iPod touch I could leave there. There is wifi there and the house next door is within less than 10 yards away so if its some kind of radio, i can here it.
@zachary I would leave it in her closet or attic since her roommate is in on it she could help and make sure she wouldn't break it

A. I wouldn't leave an iPhone/Pad outside... If you have a friend or something that you can borrow a home theater system from, you could put one of the speakers outside facing the other house and control the volume and sounds from inside with the amplifier.

Which food give my 2year old baby boy?
Q.

A. Bless his little tummy :) Serve foods that are packed with the nutrients he needs to grow healthy and strong, and limit the sweets as much as possible.

I continue to introduce new flavors and textures to my 2 year old daughter to help her develop a taste for healthy foods. She loves all types of fruits and most vegetables.

Here are some of the things she loves:

*Breakfast: Cup of a healthy Whole Grain Cereals mixed with sliced strawberries, blueberries or bananas.
*Lunch: Vegetable soup with a piece of whole-wheat bread (she specially loves broccoli cheddar soup), baked chicken with a side of cooked carrots & mashed potatoes, or brown rice with a medley of green vegetables are a few of her favorites.
*Dinner: Whole-wheat pasta with mozzarella cheese and zucchini.

Remember, as you continue to introduce various types of nuts to your son, it is important to watch closely for any potential allergies. I would also suggest you download our free app, as food recalls are unfortunate common events that can have serious consequences on your child.

Features of the Recalls Plus App include:
Proactively delivers timely recall alerts for the items on your Personal Watch List (a personalized list of the brands and products that you wish to monitor)
Hand curates every product and food recall directly from government agencies (CPSC, NHTSA, FDA, USDA) for relevance to children and consolidates them in one place
Provides parents a simple, easy-to-use solution to track recall information and instantly share it with family and friends.

The Recalls Plus App is available for free from the App Store on iPhone and iPod touch or at http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/recalls-plus/id499200328 and can be accessed on Facebook: http://apps.facebook.com/recallsplus.
