NaturalNews) A report published in the International Journal of Microbiology has verified once again that Monsanto's genetically modified (GM) crops are causing severe health problems. A legal challenge issued against Monsanto forced the multi-national agriculture giant to release raw data revealing that animals fed its patented GM corn suffered liver and kidney damage within just three months.

http://www.naturalnews.com/z028388_GM_crops_kidney_damage.html
Hundreds of sheep have died in India after grazing on cotton plants after the BT Cotton was harvested.

Answer
I've looked into this study and, statistically speaking, it is a textbook case of a Type I error. In science, we call this type of error a 'false positive'. In other words, there was a weak correlation between the liver damage and the consumption of Bt toxins that could have just as easily been attributed to chance. Therefore, it is illogical to jump to conclusions and declare that a causal relationship exists.

There are many, many other tests, on the other hand, that indicate that the toxin is perfectly harmless. Think about this for a second. The Bt toxin is naturally produced by Bacillus thurengiensis. This is a very common bacteria; it is found in most soils and on many plant surfaces. We have been eating this bacteria, along with the Bt toxin that it produces, for thousands of years. Bt corn has had the gene that codes for Bt proteins spliced into it. When these normally harmless proteins are exposed to alkaline conditions they change conformation and latch onto the walls of the intestinal tract, causing cells to lyse and eventually killing the animal. Many herbivorous insects have very alkaline intestinal tracts. Humans and other mammals, on the other hand, have acid to neutral intestinal tracts. In our GI tract, the protein remains in its harmless natural conformation.

I agree that GMO's need to be more heavily monitored, especially the ones that are modified to produce pharmaceuticals. IMO, they should only be grown in isolated hothouses so they cannot cross-pollinate with our field crops. But Bt crops and RoundUp ready crops are both harmless. When we grow Bt crops we don't have to use pesticides, which can be very damaging to the surrounding ecosystem and to the consumer.

When we plant RoundUp ready crops, then we can use RoundUp exclusively. I've studied herbicides extensively in college. Some of them are horrible chemicals, staying in the soil for years. Some of them will burn human skin if they touch it, basically popping our cells like balloons. Others, mostly auxin-based herbicides, can be carried on the wind for miles, burning the new growth of entire forests. Glyphosate (RoundUp) is a very safe herbicide. It isn't dangerous unless you drink large amounts of it (which would be incredibly stupid), breaks down in the soil after about three days, and doesn't leech nearly as easily as many other, more dangerous herbicides. It's only harmful to the environment if it gets into wetlands, where it can injure amphibians. But that can be avoided by using best management practices.

Some GMOs are dangerous. Many are actually helpful: they reduce the use of more dangerous herbicides and pesticides. Please don't throw out the baby with the bathwater.

Answer
Baby Monitor is BT's first entry into this market. Digital technology means crystal-clear sound quality and no interference. The Baby Monitor Plus has extra features in addition to the Baby Monitor, including an LCD, five lullabies and a temperature monitor. A range of up to 300 metres (in ideal conditions) and an Intercom feature means that a constant link is maintained between parent and baby.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Gerry Baby Products Company, of Thornton, Colo., is announcing a voluntary recall of approximately 990,000 Model 602 Gerry Deluxe Baby Monitors. Wires inside the monitor may be improperly connected, resulting in the product overheating with the possibility of the monitor causing fire. Another contributing factor is when blankets or other bedding are placed around or on top of the monitor blocking ventilation.

Gerry urges consumers to read all product warnings and instructions accompanying all monitors. Consumers should not place any monitor in the crib, among blankets or bedding, or in any position that interferes with ventilation for the monitor.

Gerry is aware of one fire without injuries involving a Model 602 monitor with this manufacturing error. This information was brought to CPSC's attention by a member of the International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI). In addition, CPSC has also received reports alleging Model 602 Baby Monitor involvement in two other fires, including one with a fatality and an injury, and 13 incidents of the monitors getting warm to the touch, including one skin burn. Gerry stated that only one report (no injuries) of these 16 claims was conclusively determined to have been caused by the Model 602 monitor.

The two-piece monitor sets resemble walkie-talkies. The monitors have pale gray and royal blue plastic casing. A red "on" light and a blue "Gerry" label appear on the front of each monitor. The back of the monitors are embossed with "GERRY DELUXE BABY MONITOR MODEL 602" and the manufacturer's date code. The date code appears as a circle of numbers, with an arrow pointing to the number of the month and the two-digit year number on either side of the arrow. This recall involves monitors with date codes "8806" (June 1988) through "9005" (May 1990).

Juvenile product and baby supply stores and department stores sold the recalled monitors nationwide from June 1988 through May 1990. The monitors were packaged in blue cardboard boxes labeled in part, "Gerry Deluxe Baby Monitor...Listen to Your Baby from any Home Location...Gerry Baby Safetronics..."

Consumers who own Model 602 monitors should contact Gerry toll-free at (800) 672-6289 for instructions on how to return the recalled monitors for a free replacement monitor. For more information, consumers should call Gerry, or write to the company at Attn: Building R-602 Recall, 1500 East 128th Avenue, Thornton, CO 80241.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission protects the public from unreasonable risks of injury or death from 15,000 types of consumer products under the agency's jurisdiction. To report a dangerous product or a product-related injury and for information on CPSC's fax-on-demand service, call CPSC's hotline at (800) 638-2772 or CPSC's teletypewriter at (800) 638-8270. To order a press release through fax-on-demand, call (301) 504-0051 from the handset of your fax machine and enter the release number. Consumers can obtain this release and recall information at CPSC's web site at http://www.cpsc.gov or via Internet gopher services at cpsc.gov. Answer
Depends if you include the set up costs. If you include things like a crib, stroller, bathtub, towels, cloth diapers (should you use them), wetbags (for cloth diapers), change table, ....etc.. then it can be quite $$ If you don't then it's not too bad as long as you breastfeed.

Here is what we paid for things (and we did NOT go expensive!!)

Crib (plain - is not convertible) - $200
Organic mattress - $120
Stroller (given to us as a gift from family) - $600
Car seat (convertible rear-facing to front facing) - $300
Change table (second hand) - $30
Cloth diapers (all brand new but you can find used on various sites) - $400
wetbags for diapers - $20
Throw rug for nursery - $20 (Ikea has good cheap stuff!)
Crib sheets (3 sheets) - $30
**I did not buy a crib set as it's a waste of money - can't use the blanket anyway since it's a suffocation hazard and they recommend that you not use the bumper pads).
Change pad for change table (gift from family) - $50
Change pad covers (x2) - $30
Face cloths (Ikea) - $10
Hooded baby towels (second hand) - $5
Breast pump (manual) - $90
bottles and nipples - $20 (We don't have many since I almost only breastfed but sometimes my husband gave him a bottle of breastmilk)
Baby bathtub (gift from family) - $15
Large receiving blankets (shower gifts) - $50
Bassinet and sheets (bought off a friend) - $10
Swing - free from friend (these can cost a lot!!)
Playmat with dangling toys - free from friend
Highchair - free from friend (although these can cost up to $200)
Clothing - I bought all second hand except a few items - $150 for the whole year, including winter jumpers and toques, mitts..etc. I also got a lot of hand-me-downs from friends and new items at the baby shower
Moby wrap (shower gift) - but they usually cost $40
Boba 3G carrier - $120
Suze's kindercoat - $150 (so I could carry my son on my back during the winter)
Burt's bees soap - $9.00/bottle (about 6 bottles/year, if that)
bum cream - $10/year (although my little guy didn't get rashes really)
wipes - $80/year
Baby food - this starts at 6 months old and it can be about $50-70 a month because you're trying new foods that they may or may not take LOL
Rattles and teethers - $30
Sippy cups - $25/year
baby cutlery/bowls - $20
bibs - I only bought kushies nylon ones so I could wash them in the sink after each meal - $20
Big toys (like the fisher price kitchen, piano, story chair..etc - I got used) - $120
Books (used and new) - $100 (we started to read to him very early)
playpen (I bought used) - $40
Blankets - free from baby shower
rocking chair for the nursery - second hand - $5
Tylenol/gripe water/steamer...etc - $50
monitor - $40 (I didn't get the video monitor)
Crib mobile - $35
small stereo for nursery (to play nursery rhymes) - $30

I can't think of anything else but I am sure there were other things! It can be REALLY expensive if you choose to make it so or it can be quite cheap! Don't forget that a lot of stuff you get from your baby shower (as long as you have one). Buying second hand stuff is often the best way to go, except car seats - never buy used carseats since you don't know if they've been in an accident or not (once they are in an accident they must be thrown away). There have also been recalls on cribs, toys, stroller..etc so you have to check to see if there are recalls on anything before purchasing from people.

which of the following is not an example of radio technology? answer choices below!?

Andrea M

a.baby monitors b. cellular phones c. internet d. both b and c e.all of the above.

Answer
Dear Andrea M.,
Answer is a. baby monitors. Baby could be monitored by CCTV (Close Circuit TV). While cellular phones and internet are examples of radio tech utilization. Cellular phones works use radio wave in frequency around 800, 900, 1800, and 1900 MHz, while several internet connections use radio wave as well, eg. through satellite, or through cellphones (EDGE, GPRS, 3G, 3.5G).
Thank you very much Andrea M.

My husband and I are expecting our first child in 2 weeks. We are trying to find a kind of digital/video baby monitor that has 1 camera we can point at his crib, but with two receivers/video monitors that way we can each have one? Or to put one in our bedroom and one downstairs. Does anyone know of something like this? Thanks.

Answer
Summer Infant makes a monitor with two receivers - it is called Complete Coverage and you can get it at Babies R Us, Target and buybuyBaby.

Where can I find Baby Focus Digital Video Monitor instruction manual?

Christina

I had received a Baby Focus Digital Video Monitor from BabiesRus for my baby shower.. went to test it out today, as my due date is in 5 days, and the screen doesn't show a picture at all, however the light turns on. When I went to refer to the instruction manual I realized there wasn't one included! Can anyone help on how to get the screen to work or where I can find a manual online? PLEASE & thank you!! (She will be here any day!)

Answer
if you can't find the info online at the manufacturer's website, return the product for one that has all required materials..... get a refund. your own eyes, ears, & intuition are much better than tech.

I am not pregnant. This is a protect for school.

What is the annual cost the first year to raise a baby?

Second question. Im going to give you a list of newborn items. Tell me which items are TRULY NECESSARY.

Crib
diaper changing table
rocking chair
baby monitor
baby bathtub
bottles
bottle brush
bottle drying rack
baby swing
pacifiers
infant bouncer
swaddling blanket
play mat
play pen
carseat

Answer
Crib
Carseat
Bottles
Swaddling blanket
Play mat (can be used on floor as changing mat too)
These are the basic basic needs for me. You can get by without the others but not these.

The annual costs for a baby each year is different for every person. Some woman breast feed which is cheaper than formula. Others use cloth diapers which are cheaper than disposable etc.
I bought a pack of 15 reusable pea pod diapers for $70. These can be used from newborn right up to 3 years, so I only bought 1 pack of disposable diapers during the first year, to see what was better. Diapers are about $10 (new Zealand dollars) a pack. Babies go through about 5-10 nappies each day in the first few weeks, and then about 3-5 a day from around 4 months to a year. So do the math and it'll give you an approximate answer (get the price of diapers from your local supermarket).
If breast fed, it cost nothing. I breast fed, but I also bought a breast pump and baby bottles for $150 in case baby needed to be left with another person etc. if formula feeding, do some research online on the average formula used a month, and then times that by 12 (12 months in a year) get a price from your local supermarket.
Clothes- this depends on where you buy from etc, but I spent about $800 on all clothes up to 12 months. (including shoes, socks, togs, pyjamas etc)
I spent about $20 or so on baby shampoo, soap and powder every 6 or so weeks, so that's about $180 a year.
I bought baby towels and facecloths before my baby was born and they lasted right up until she was four. I spent $30 on 5 towels and a couple packs of facecloths.
Bibs- got given some at baby shower, but bought a few packs for $20 around about, these lasted the whole time needed.
Bassinet/Moses basket - needed for first 8 weeks, cost me $80
Crib- needed up until about 2- cost me $250
Stroller- needed up until about 3- cost me $150
Car seat- Bought a seat that was used from birth til 4 years. Cost $150
Blankets, sheets, duvets for crib- got given some at baby shower but probably costs about $100 for a couple pairs of sheets, blankets etc
Swaddling blankets- needed for first few weeks (I used them but not necessary) depending on brand etc but I got a few muslin wraps for $30.
Baby bath- optional, but I used one. $30
Medication such as baby Tylenol, gripe water, teething gel, teething powder etc about $50 all up the first year (depends)
Baby food- baby cereals, rusks, custards and other tinned foods probably about $90 a month (depends how much food baby eats. This price is based on my baby who at 7 months ate 2 tins a day, at $1.50 each) I also bought veggies and meat, and puréed these myself for baby. (this price will depend, as some babies don't start real food until a year old) my girl at 10-12 months was eating the same foods as I was.
Some people will put their children into childcare, this is another cost.
Where I live, medical attention for under 5's is free, but many people will have to pay for this as well.
Hope I haven't forgotten anything :)
Hope I helped!

In Canada, is it illegal for someone to listen in on my baby monitor? And how likely is it to happen?

Brick

Just wondering what the laws are here, can't seem to find much information on it. The monitor transmits on 49MHz frequency. The other day I happened to catch something that sounded like a walkie talkie and it made me wonder if I'm hearing that on my monitor, could anyone be listening to our family? Hopefully no one is, but I have caught my snoopy neighbours sitting in the dark, looking into my window once. I'm now pretty weary of them.

If this monitor is easy to listen to, is there a baby monitor that anyone knows of that transmits on a frequency that would be more difficult to listen in on?

Thanks for any info!
That is correct, it's a baby monitor. It's not a magical device that stops transmitting sounds that don't originate directly from the baby or within the baby's room. It is capable of transmitting any sounds near the room. I'm well aware that my baby monitor is not secure in any way, that's why I'm here asking. My question is about it being legal or not to take advantage of this monitor and use it to eavesdrop on a family. I'm not interested in "probably" legal, I'd like to hear from someone who knows about these specific radio laws here in Canada.

Answer
It is perfectly legal in Canada to possess and use radio equipment which is able to receive broadcast provided that the information is not passed on or disclosed to another person or people. It is illegal to decrypt encrypted or scrambled communications. Laws are laid out in the Canadian Radiocommunications Act.

Police scanners are perfectly legal. So are cell phone scanners. Equipment such as baby monitors and cordless phones are notoriously cheap and only operate over a limited range of radio frequencies. It is often possible for two different sets of baby monitors to be on the same frequency and hear each other just by chance. Most operate on frequencies not easily picked up by standard two-way radios, but one with enough money one can purchase radio equipment able to pick up those frequencies. However, in most cases, someone would have to be extremely serious if they wanted to listen to your baby monitor -- or just extremely (un)lucky that their system picked it up.

In previous jobs I've had access to equipment able to pick up the darnedest things. You'd be installing some equipment on a remote mountain top and then listening to a crane operator on minute and a couple of arguing fishermen the next. People do have a habit of assuming that no one else is listening.

You can look for units which have scramblers built in. You can use wired units. You can locate it against an outside wall with a (silvered) mirror behind it. You can find one which you can lower its transmitting power -- or in which you can take off its transmitting antenna. Try walking around your house with the receiver and see how far away you can hear anything. Many units allow resetting of frequencies -- you can do this every day -- and some even to this each time it is turned on/off.

I've heard so many different, mixed reviews. I'm mostly concerned about them not working with our wireless network (which I don't know how to tweak). If anyone has a good one that works well with a wireless network that doesn't cost TONS of money, please pass on the info. Thanks!

Answer
What do you mean working with wireless network? Most baby monitors are wireless, but they don’t connect to a modem. Do you just mean without a cord or actually hooked up to a computer? I have been using Summer Infant Hand Held Video baby monitor for 6 month now and can’t complain. It sees at night and has color. The monitor is hand held so you can carry it with you where you want to. At first the battery would last 3-4 days now it lasts 2 days, then you have to recharge, but it can be on when charging. I got mine on eBay at half the cost. If you still don’t have your baby and don’t need one ASAP. Start looking for deals. I got ours 2 month before the baby was born but it took me 4 weeks to get the deal I wanted.
I’m also using a wireless connection on my laptop and there is no interference with the monitor, it’s working perfectly fine. Also it does NOT pick up cell phones, radios or other babies.

What baby monitor do you have? Are you happy with it?

Beth

This has been a toughie for me and hubby. The reviews on all baby monitors are very mixed, and neither brand nor price really seem to have anything to do with whether or not people like a monitor. Just wondering what you have and use, and maybe what you've used in the past. What have your experiences been like with those brands?

Answer
We picked up a used 'first years' one at a garage sale...it works fine...but our rooms are so close together at one end of the house, that we wind up just turning it off.

My sister used an 'Angelcare' one...it works fine too...

They're generally all pretty good...it just depends on whether you want 'bells and whistles' with it or not.

I have an older digital video camera that I really don't use very much. I am trying to find a way to hook it up in the baby's-to-be room and connect it to our TV in our bedroom.

Are there certain cords that I need? Is this possible? I'm hoping to fix it so that it is on, but not recording.

I would like to get a baby video monitor but I want it in both kids rooms with only one monitor screen. What is the best one on the market for the cheapest price. Or...is there a video system out that has only one camera that I can order a 2nd camera separate for?

Answer
Hi

Like any other products, baby monitors need to suit your lifestyle and satisfy your requirements, even to the slightest of details. So before you purchase one, try to dwell on a number of factors first. These things will not only serve as your guide, they will also help you pick out the best type or brand for your little one.

Some of the things you need to consider are:

Range
Portability
Levels of Interference
Video Monitoring Options

There are more details at the link in the source box about the Best Baby Monitors and I hope they help

I have two iPhones, the old iPhone 3g and the new iPhone 4s. now i wanted to use my old iphone 3g (iOs version updated) as a Home Spy Camera and wanted to watch my kids at home live stream to my new iPhone 4s while im at work. i also got my Home Wifi network. is there any best iphone application out there for this matter? or is it possible to use my Home IP address to use and access it for this concept?

Answer
There are many training videos telling us how to make iphone as home spy camera on line.
Um...I've found two:
1. http://www.wonderhowto.com/how-to-use-iphone-as-spy-camera-423938/
2. http://www.wonderhowto.com/how-to-make-iphone-secret-spy-camera-423940/
The second video looks like very easy to access, but I don't know if it is useful for you.

If these two ways are not fit, I suggest you to buy a Baby Monitor or Home Spy Camera. You can visit this online store:

It's a wholesaler, so its price is very low.

Best way to track my fitness with iPhone apps?

philscalis

I have a degree in exercise science and am going to school for physical therapy now and really want to track my fitness now that I have an iPhone and I know the importance of health. However, after researching apps I'm not sure the best app or app combination to use. I want to get a heart rate monitor (wahoo or polar?) and many of the apps will sync with it. I want to track calories, GPS run mapping capabilities, nutritious intake, and I want to track my strength training regimen (sets, reps, etc). The my fitness pal app seems to do some of these things and you can also tie in other apps or sync them with it. However there are so many other ones and I want to know the best way to do this if anyone can help. So far I have downloaded: my fitness pal, endomondo, fitocracy, sportstracker, runkeeper, real intelligence fitness app, and digifit icardio. If someone can help me out it would be much appreciated. I would try them out but don't want to give my info and make an account for all of these apps if they aren't what I want.

Answer
I track some of the same stuff you do, but not everything and I've tried some of the products you have, but not all. However, here's my take:

1. I use Runkeeper as my basic app. I'm primarily a runner and so are most of my friends. It links easily to facebook if you are interested in that. For me, this is how I communicate with my running community. It has some other basic cardio functions in it as well (elliptical, etc)
2. Runkeeper has a GPS function to be used with the iphone, it's generally accurate within 0.1-0.3 mile. However, when I want to be really accurate, I still default to my garmin which I can still link to my Runkeeper account. (ie, when I'm racing or want to track elevation)
3. Realize also that when you use GPS function on your phone, it will wear down the battery very quickly. I'll use the Runkeeper GPS function if I'm running or cycling an hour or less, but it's not ideal for long distances.
4. Runkeeper and probably most fitness apps will link to a heart rate monitor. However, I'd first ask why you intend to use one? As a PT, myself, I've come to the realization that unless you have a medical condition that warrants it, tracking heart rate is overly burdensome for little pay off. Just used your rate of Rate of Perceived Exertion. Whether you are doing intervals or tempo workouts, it's your exertional effort that's the real issue. Most of the established "guidelines" for heart rate during exercise were established for patients recovering from cardiac events, not necessarily for healthy adult fitness. So, unless you want to get into research about cardiac effort, I'd say don't bother. I suppose you can use it if you want to get a MORE accurate idea of your caloric burn, but I have better options for that (more later). I DIDN"T use one for years, mostly because I take a beta blocker which throws the whole target heart rate out the window anyway. I'm using one now (more on that in a minute) only because I'm pregnant and NEED to make sure my heart rate doesn't go over a certain amount (and I have arguements about that anyway). I use the iphone app with it, but haven't linked it to my RK. It does record it on the wahoo site, but I never go back and look at it. The wahoo site also does GPS and if you get the hardware, you can link it with your bike or a foot pod.
5. If you do want to use a HR monitor, I use the wahoo. My husband and I both have Garmin 910XT's and even though he got the heart rate monitor for it, he's happier with the wahoo. Again, he's not even using it anymore and I am. However, I don't even bother logging my heart rate...I use it only as a warning system. I do think I can link it with RK, but haven't bothered. Once I have the baby, I'll stop using it. Not sure why hubby doesn't like the garmin monitor...I just took his word for it.
6. Now, onto strength. RK doesn't really have a place to log this. I used MapMyRun for awhile which at least gave me an idea of how long I was weight lifting and an approximation of calories. In my opinion, if you are looking for an app that does everything, I'd say be prepared for a really complicated app. I found that the more features it has, the less user friendly it becomes. This is how I felt about MMR. For strength training, I'd consider a separate app. Same thing goes for nutrition. There are probably apps out there designed just for that which are much more user friendly.
7. Back to calorie counting. All the apps give you a basic ESTIMATION of your calories burned based on your weight and work out parameters. Even if you are using a heart rate monitor, again, this is only an ESTIMATE. Unless you are in a lab, all these tools provide estimates only. However, if you really want to know what your body is using and burning, I'd recommend the Body Media System. It's about as accurate as you can get with calorie count without having to be in a lab. The web app also has a nutritional log.

So here's my take in a nutshell:
1. Use a basic app for your cardio. Runkeeper is my personal favorite. Only use the GPS for shorter workouts
2. Use a separate GPS (I've only used garmins) if you want to be really accurate with your distance or if you are doing a long work out and simply sync it to your cardio app (like RK) from the garmin site.
3. Don't bother with a HR monitor unless you have a medical reason to do so
4. Use a separate app for your weight lifting and nutrition.
5. Consider a body media system if you REALLY want an accurate calorie count. It's expensive new, but I got a Core basic system used on ebay for $32. (myself, I'm content using the basic estimates from my cardio app).

Maybe there's an app that does everything, but I find that it gets too complicated....I don't want to spend 30 minutes logging my info.

We are thinking of getting a video baby monitor. We are wondering what is the distance the signal can be picked up. People are telling us burglars and pedophiles will drive around and pick up the signals. But what distance does it take, because we can see around our house where someone might park to view our monitor and that is in plain sight. Thanks for the help.

Video monitors don't have a long range but according to the article below, the picture is scrambled. The sound monitors can be heard as far as 900 feet, which is pretty much a small corner of your neighborhood.

How much do we need to monitor radiation in our home?

FF GURU

Ever since we had our daughter, my husband is obsessed with eliminating any sources of radiation in our house. He wants to turn off our wireless router, stop using cell phones, and stop using the video baby monitor in the nursery because he has read that all of these things give out harmful amounts of radiation, especially impacting the development of children's brains.
Is there any validity to his concerns? Or is he just being an overprotective parent?

Answer
he,s a little overboard, and misdirected. you get much more radiation on a long distance plane flight than you do from those sources. living in high elevations is a greater risk than living downwind from a nuclear power plant. you get more radioactivity from living downwind of a coal fired power plant.

What are the best non-digital baby monitors on the market?

Mrs.S

I have looked into digital monitors, but they're a little out of my price range. Does anyone know of any good classic style baby monitors? I am pregnant with my first child.

Answer
I love the Sony sound sensor baby call. It's voice activated so you don't hear the static. You do have the choice of listening to everything though. I bought a second one for my 3 yr olds room since I can't hear her if she calls out. They are only $35.00 at Target, great buy.

Baby Monitors that have the Technical Conformity Mark?

Amanda H

I'm currently living on one of Japan's islands, and we were just told we have to have a baby monitor that has a Technical Conformity Mark. Are there any baby monitors (preferably video) that I can order off the internet that do have this mark? I have no way of checking since U.S. baby monitors aren't sold on island. We're looking into buying a Japanese monitor, but they aren't firm believers in having one, so we are having an extremely difficult time finding one. And the ones we do find are just plain audio monitors that are more expensive then the U.S. video monitors. Thanks in advance for your answers!

Here's a link to a website that shows the actual mark.

http://www.tele.soumu.go.jp/e/adm/monitoring/illegal/monitoring_qa/index.htm

Answer
I believe - though am not certain - that this mark is unique to Japan as product safety specs differ from country to country. I'm not sure what the US equivalent is, but here in the UK it looks like a "CE". You should find out if a US tested product will suffice, or whether it really does have to be tested safe in Japan too.

I've just had a quick Google and found reference to a Japanese brand baby monitor with video simply called "Century Baby Monitor". Apparently you can buy it at http://www.blogcatalog.com/blog/baby-monitor-how-to-choose-baby-monitor for $99USD, but I've only had a quick glance and would certainly look into it more before purchasing as it could be dodgy. Have a look around and you may be able to find it cheaper anyway :)

I know this debate has gone for years but i am really tired of my windows xp computer! Freakin Data Execution Error won't go away and crap. Does Apple Machintosh have alot of errors like Windows>?

Answer
Been on a Mac since 1988. I (we) have 1/20th of the problems and 1/1000th of the viruses. Pop a CD/DVD in and it pops up on the screen. No C/://d/bk2C:// crap.

I have recommended Mac to the last 20 non-computer people that were looking for computers. Like suckers, they all bought el-cheapo's from chain stores with s/w they will never use. 85% said they should have listened.

If your going to use it seriously, invest the $$ into a good computer w/o the scanner, printer, baby monitor, camera, microphone, alarm clock/microwave options and a ton of useless s/w. No to mention the rediculous s/w upgrades every week.

Once you go MAC, you never go back :)

Before this pregnacy my sister lost her baby during child birth. The doc said she had toxins and her uric acid was high.Is it safe for her to have another baby am worried please advise. She is 43years old.

Answer
Anyone over the age of 40 is considered a high risk pregnancy first off. High blood pressure during pregnancy is caused by 1 of 3 things...

Chronic hypertension: A woman can have high blood pressure before she gets pregnant. Sometimes a woman has high blood pressure for a long time before she gets pregnant, but she doesn't know it until her first prenatal check-up.

Preeclampsia: This condition can cause serious problems for both the mother and the baby. It only happens in the second half of pregnancy. It causes high blood pressure, protein in the urine, blood changes and other problems. (The only cure for this type of high blood pressure is delivery of the baby)

Transient hypertension: Some women just get high blood pressure near the end of pregnancy. They don't have any other signs of preeclampsia.

As far as Toxins go, I am not sure what you are referring to, but I will take a guess most toxins would be an environmental toxin that the mother was exposed to in the early stages of pregnancy, but pre-eclapsia, can cause a dangerous state for both mother and baby.

Here is some more information I thought you might find helpful

What Are the Effects of High Blood Pressure in Pregnancy?
Although many pregnant women with high blood pressure have healthy babies without serious problems, high blood pressure can be dangerous for both the mother and the fetus. Women with pre-existing, or chronic, high blood pressure are more likely to have certain complications during pregnancy than those with normal blood pressure. However, some women develop high blood pressure while they are pregnant (often called gestational hypertension).

The effects of high blood pressure range from mild to severe. High blood pressure can harm the mother's kidneys and other organs, and it can cause low birth weight and early delivery. In the most serious cases, the mother develops preeclampsia--or "toxemia of pregnancy"--which can threaten the lives of both the mother and the fetus.

What Is Preeclampsia?
Preeclampsia is a condition that typically starts after the 20th week of pregnancy and is related to increased blood pressure and protein in the mother's urine (as a result of kidney problems). Preeclampsia affects the placenta, and it can affect the mother's kidney, liver, and brain. When preeclampsia causes seizures, the condition is known as eclampsia--the second leading cause of maternal death in the U.S. Preeclampsia is also a leading cause of fetal complications, which include low birth weight, premature birth, and stillbirth.

There is no proven way to prevent preeclampsia. Most women who develop signs of preeclampsia, however, are closely monitored to lessen or avoid related problems. The only way to "cure" preeclampsia is to deliver the baby.

How Common Are High Blood Pressure and Preeclampsia in Pregnancy?
High blood pressure problems occur in 6 percent to 8 percent of all pregnancies in the U.S., about 70 percent of which are first-time pregnancies. In 1998, more than 146,320 cases of preeclampsia alone were diagnosed.

Although the proportion of pregnancies with gestational hypertension and eclampsia has remained about the same in the U.S. over the past decade, the rate of preeclampsia has increased by nearly one-third. This increase is due in part to a rise in the numbers of older mothers and of multiple births, where preeclampsia occurs more frequently. For example, in 1998 birth rates among women ages 30 to 44 and the number of births to women ages 45 and older were at the highest levels in 3 decades, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. Furthermore, between 1980 and 1998, rates of twin births increased about 50 percent overall and 1,000 percent among women ages 45 to 49; rates of triplet and other higher-order multiple births jumped more than 400 percent overall, and 1,000 percent among women in their 40s.

How difficult are panther geckos to care for?

Natalie

I'm 13 years old an want to get a panther gecko(s). Are they social, like can I have 2 and they won't hurt eachother? Can I hold them? Do the crickets HAVE to be alive, or can I feed them live and dead crickets/insects. And lastly if I get a boy and a girl can they have babies? And if anyone has any other information I would appreciate it!!! Thanks in advance!

Answer
SPECIES DESCRIPTION:
Leopard Geckos have been one of the most popular reptiles in captivity for over thirty years. They are one of the easiest beginner geckos to take care of. They are moderately handle-able, but are more for looking at and enjoying.

SIZE:
Leopard geckos are generally between 6 and 8 inches, although some reach nearly a foot. Hatchlings are between 2 and 3 inches, and are usually harder to raise and work with. Adult males are usually 7 to 9 inches and weigh between 70 and 85 grams. Adult females are usually 6 to 8 inches and weigh 65 to 75 grams.

LIFE SPAN:
Leopard Geckos are some of the longest living Geckos in captivity. Leopard geckos can live 10 years if properly cared for, although some males reach 20 years.

TEMPERATURE:
Leo's are from dry, arid climates, so their overall temperature needs to be with in 80 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. A special reptile light bulb from a pet store or a regular house bulb will be sufficient. Leopard geckos do not need any sort of special UV light since they are most active at night, which is the best time for viewing their natural behavior. Special under tank heating pads may be used, but must be used with caution due to the risk of burning the gecko's underside. Under tank heaters are best under a reptile carpet or a 1 inch thick layer of sand.

DIET:
Leo's are carnivorous. They eat small insects and on rare occasion, baby "pinky" mice. "Pinky" mice should only be feed to adult Leo's, and again only on rare occasion. Feeder insects include crickets, mealworms, superworms, and as occasional treats, waxworms. Leo's do best on multiple food sources rather than the same, monotonous meal at each feeding. Feeder insects should be gut loaded if possible to insure best nutrition for your Leo. Gutloading is the process of feeding insects with nutritious substances. Commercial insect feed or vegetables such as potatoes, lettuce, and other greens are sufficient. Feeder insects should also be dusted with a calcium powder that includes vitamin D3, and a vitamin powder. Calcium is especially important for juveniles and egg carrying females. Females carrying eggs take the calcium from their bodies to form the egg casings.

ENVIRONMENT:
Leo's typically do not need a great deal of space, but bigger is usually better. Too big though, may cause the gecko to stray away from their food and water. One gecko needs at least a 10 gallon tank, two needs at least a 20 gallon.
Substrate in a Leo's environment must be cautiously chosen, sand especially. Sand may cause impaction(the build up of sand or other indigestible matter in the intestinal tract) in Leo's under 6 inches and should not be used. With geckos over 6 inches, the risk of impaction is still there and should be used with caution. Always monitor geckos when using sand. News paper, reptile cage carpet, and tile can also be used as a floor for your Leo.
Hides are a necessity for all types of reptiles. Hides give your gecko a place to sleep, hide, or just chill. A Leo's tank should have a hot side and a cool side. both sides require a hide, so the gecko can pick where he wants to be. On the hot side, the hide must be dry. On the cool side, the hide must be moist and humid. A humid hide can be made by cutting a hole in a Tupperware bowl turned upside down. Place damp moss or a damp paper towel in the bowl to make the hide moist. The moist hide may not seem practical for a desert reptile, but it is necessary for the gecko's shedding and respiratory system.
Enrichment items are also necessary for your gecko to be happy. Rocks, plants, and wood are great for Leo's to climb on and interact with. Rocks and any other enrichment items should not be gotten from outside. Getting objects from outside presents risks to your gecko's health. Parasites, diseases, and pesticides are all possible from "wild" items from outside. If you still want to use items from outside, they should be boiled, baked, or burned to rid of any possible hazards. After the items have been sanitized, you may place them in the gecko's environment, but they should still be used with caution. Use as few items from outside as possible.
Also do not use too many rocks and plants because the gecko may be restricted to movement and be stressed out.
The number one rule with housing two geckos together is DO NOT HOUSE TWO MALES TOGETHER! Housing two or more males together is a recipe for disaster. Both males will fight to protect their turf and the fight will go on until only one gecko is alive. Males may be housed with multiple females or alone. Females are compatible with each other and may be housed together with no problems.

T

I walk allot and i am constantly moving and doing stuff. I barely eat for I have barley anytime to with a new born. I dont want to spend hundreds of dollars for I just had baby and diapers and formula dont come cheap? Help please?

Answer
Here you go: This is from my own experience and what has worked for me. I have laid it all out for you so that others may have the success I have.

The perfect way to loose weight and monitor your progress is to use a calorie counter on a daily basis while you diet.

Energy In/Energy Out

Food Intake: 1,200 Per Day

One Pound equals 3,500 Calories

To loose one pound per day, You need to burn your food intake plus your one pound of fat

1,200 (intake) + 3,500 (Outtake) = 4,700 Calories Burn

You must burn at least 4,700 Calories everyday to loose one pound at least. It is very easy to go up and beyond 4,700 calories each day.

Best way to do this is to track your progress on a calorie counter monitor watch. If you do it by the numbers you can loose the weight. It is just a matter of changing the way you think about weight loss.

Once you start wearing your calorie counter you can see the numbers increase and you fill find yourself doing extra things in your day, like tapping your foot while waiting at the light in your car, chewing gum, singing out loud and so on onto of your workout routines. You begin to see that everything you do in your day contributes to the overall numbers needed to loose that pound.

Water Intake/Less Storage

Most people do not get enough water in their system. Water is your body's principal chemical component, comprising, on average, 60 to 80 percent of your weight. Every system in your body depends on water. For example, water flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to your cells and provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues.

Lack of water can lead to dehydration, a condition that occurs when you don't have enough water in your body to carry out normal functions. To determine if you are getting enough water use this simple formula.. Take your weight, for example 150 pounds and divide by 2. Take your answer which is 75 lbs and change it to ounces, in this case 75 ounces. That is how many ounces of water you need a day. Your body performs mostly on water. If you make sure you get enough water everyday your body will perform at top notch and your body will no longer have the cravings of junk food. You will have a better performing body system to help you work out and feel better thru out your day.

Good Food

My favorite things to eat:

Avocado Wraps

Simple: Low Carb Tortilla, Half Avocado sliced, alpha sprouts, lettuce, soy bacon...Just wrap it up and eat. You can vary the things you put inside so long as you keep it to approx 4 or 5 items. You want to make sure they are fresh, low calorie and filling. Avocado and mushrooms can replace meats in your meal and still have great taste.

Special K Cereals are fantastic. They have that sweetness that one craves and is so good for you. Calories are low. Great for even just dinner.

First thing in the morning...A Glass of Chocolate Milk. Yup!! Chocolate Milk. We all crave that "got to have" item in the morning. Milk is the best thing you can have for yourself while working out. The chocolate (and you can use Carnation Instant Milk for this but I simply use Nestle dry mix) will give you that sweet "snack" that you need. If you give your body a little bit of it and its in a control way, you will not crave sweets and junk the rest of the day.

Lean Cuisines

Fantastic food! Each meal is approx 180 t0 380 calories per box. So think about your calories. 1,200...You can still have several of these meals a day and still be under your intake requirements.

It’s all about the numbers and watching what you take in and what you burn out. And you know what..If you go over your 1,200 mark for food intake...that’s okay...you simple up your total calories burned for the day by what you took it. So long as you burn off the over all calories to be more than your food intake. Just make sure you stick too it so you can reach your weight loss goals.

Fruits and Veggies

All you want on the schedule listed below.
Bananas are my favorite. They are very filling and can make a meal all on their own.

____

Vitamins

My favorite is ONE A DAY WITH ENERGY...I am in love with this vitamin because I am just like everyone else who loves those quick fix energy drinks. But what people do not realize is that energy drinks can contain 120 to 440 calories in just ONE Can. If you think about it..That is HALF of your allowed calories for food intake. The best alternative I have found is One a day with energy vitamin. Easy to spot, it is packaged in a green label bottle. Just One vitamin a day will give you as much energy as approx. 1 1/2 cans of red bull...WITHOUT the calorie intake.
WoW..now your making progress already because you have made more room in your intake calories for actual healthy food.

_____

Soda/Carbonation

Carbonation is terrible for your system because it bloats your stomach. And when your stomach bloats, your jeans just don't fit. You can drop one pant size simply by NOT drinking any carbonated drinks all together..Take away the bloat and you have instantly just made it one pant size lower. Besides, Sodas dehydrate you and with that One a Day Vitamin, you won't need the Caffeine in the soda and it will also cut out those extra calories that you don't need.
So remove that soda and the energy drinks and just think how much calories you just instantly removed from your daily intake. I normally consume what...four sodas and two energy drinks in one day...that is a total of .... 900 calories. Of what??? Nothing...Those are horrible calories and calories that can be replaced by food which will fuel your body for your day and your workouts.

____

Your Body

Your body is like a computer. You must program your body to do what it is suppose to do so it won't crash and leave you with a virus. Your stomach is only the size of your fist. So think about it right now, Look at your hand and close your fist. Not very big is it. That is how much food you actually ONLY need to eat, each time you eat for every meal. If you eat anything more than that, you will stretch out your stomach which causes overeating and overweight.

What you need to do is eat every three hours, approx 5 to 7 times everyday around the same time. If you are always giving your body healthy and better food choices (the size of your fist) every three hours, your body will know you are giving it food. It will use that food properly. It will not go into starvation mode or store food away for later because it knows...it will get more in three hours. So what does your body do...it flushes everything out of your system because it doesn't need it.. Now it knows...you wont' forget about it and that food is on its way.

____

Walking Buddy

This is the best thing especially for woman. Get a walking buddy. One hour everyday. Just think about how much talking, venting and laughing two woman can do together while walking and yup, you guessed it...it just burns more calories and reduces your stress. You now are more relaxed because you can talk and free yourself of whatever is frustrating you while getting into shape.

Our Internet Connection is very bad and we are thinking of getting a new router. Any Suggestions.?

Trevor

We have a Belkin N450 Router. We have at least 10 Devices connected and the Router can handle it, we want to buy a new one of upgrade it. We have a Computer, 2 Ipads, 3 Iphones/Ipod, Xbox, Kindle Fire. What would you recommend.

Answer
Upgrading the router will not improve your Internet connection.

How fast is your Internet connection?

You can measure your Internet speed here: http://speedtest.net

That being said,

A wireless router connects two separate networks and manages the traffic between them.

In most home network applications the router connects your local group of computers and devices known as the LAN with the Internet, commonly called the WAN or Wide Area Network.

For example, If you have a 5 Mbps Internet connection, the maximum shared Internet bandwidth available to all of the devices connected to the router will be 5 Mbps.

Any bandwidth others users or devices on your connection are using will be deducted from the total WAN (Internet) bandwidth that is available to you.

If you have a 5 Mbps Internet connection and one user is utilizing 4 Mbps of the bandwidth to stream a Netflix movie, that only leaves 1 Mbps for all of the rest of the users on the LAN.

In simple terms, the more users you have the more speed will be required. Streaming video, such as Netflix and Hulu require a lot of bandwidth. Here are the minimum recommendations from Netflix. https://support.netflix.com/en/node/306

Many people would be likely be surprised at how many active connections their wireless router has. I have dozens. cell phones, tablets, iPods, game consoles, laptops, desktops, ROKU boxes, Internet enabled devices such as TVs and audio receivers, and the list goes on.

Fast wireless routers and connections are designed to stream large files on your LAN quickly. The high speed routers permit fast transfer of files between devices connected to your LAN, however WAN speed is still limited by your ISP. The only way to Improve your Internet speed is to upgrade your plan or switch to a faster ISP.

If you still want to upgrade for other reasons other than Internet speed,

It pretty much comes down to what features you want and how much you want to spend.

As far as the brand goes, the brand is not as important as the model. Some manufacturers release a good model but the next is crap. I would look at the Amazon reviews of models that interest you. Even if you don't buy from Amazon the reviews will tell you a lot about which models to avoid. Look for at least 15 or more reviews with a 4 star or better rating. Read a few and see if they sound like the particular model will work for your application.

For under $50, this Medialink is the most popular and highly reviewed model. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A3YN0Z0/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00A3YN0Z0&linkCode=as2&tag=excharge-20

If you want to spend a little more, many routers support "Dual Band". http://www.amazon.com/s/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&keywords=dual%20band%20router&linkCode=ur2&qid=1374595143&rh=n%3A172282%2Cn%3A541966%2Cn%3A300189%2Ck%3Adual%20band%20router%2Cp_72%3A1248879011&rnid=1248877011&tag=excharge-20

Dual band routers have multiple wireless radios enabling broadcast on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands simultaneously. Using the 5 GHz band cuts down on interference from cordless phones and microwave ovens.. Not all devices can use the 5 GHz frequency. Many laptops and other devices only operate at 2.4 GHz. Thus the need for dual band routers.

In any case,

You should try to centrally locate your wireless router or gateway up high and away from dense walls and electrical and 2.4 GHz wireless interference such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, baby monitors, etc.

Wireless signals, including 2.4 and 5 GHz, are affected by many factors including distance, wall density, electrical interference, directional antenna range, etc.

All of these factors will affect your actual wireless range. As wireless connection quality varies the connection speeds are renegotiated. The WLAN connection may start at 150 Mbps and end up at less than 10 Mbps or drop entirely.

Your best bet is always a direct Ethernet connection to the router, especially for fixed devices that don't need mobility. Ethernet is unaffected by wireless interference and will give you a rock solid, stable network connection.

Good Luck...

(Oppositional Defiant Disorder) How can I learn different strategies to deal with him in school and help him do better with his work. I am a teacher's aide and I only have to monitor one child because the rest of the class does well and don't have a 504 like he does. He has ODD & ADHD. How can I get him to do his work without having to fight with him or have him be so defiant or so disruptive to his classmates? I am studying to be a teacher and I would like to know I have helped this child is some way or another. I have tried so many things with him, I have not yet found anything that works and I'm starting to get very fustrated with myself for not being able to to control or lessen his behaviors for the Teacher's sake. I want him to do well and I want him to make an effort into trying and know that he his able to do anything anyone else can in his class if he just tries. He makes no effort with himself and I feel bad that I can't get him to do it for himself and for his future.

Hi! I was a therapist w/troubled adolescents--15 yrs with young women in a locked long-term psych treatment facility and then took a job that ended up with a special Sp Ed. class of 8 guys with severe behavior disorders! I understand what you walked into! I had to learn a totally new way of working with these guys, as talking was like whistling into the wind! I love Piaget and his Cognitive Stages! One step below verbal communication (Concrete Cog stage) is DIAGRAMMING (pre-Concrete Cognitive stage). This is in all high tech now, and is called "IT"--Information Tech! It's getting impossible to read so many volumes of info, that technology is now diagramming the info! Much more accurate than verbal content. SOO, I began diagramming the guys' behavior patterns. They were fascinated and were volunteering to diagram some group disturbance that had just happened!! They got so good at it, that they then started drawing their Family of Origin system, where they had developed their behavioral pattern!! I applied Wm. Glasser's Basic Emotional Needs (Belonging, Power, Freedom and Fun) and the guys really responded!! These are EMOTIONAL NEEDS that need gratification daily! Then, I used Berne's term from Games People Play, to describe the vehicle (pattern) with which they obtain their emotional Needs! I stressed with them that ALL PEOPLE MUST GET THESE NEEDS MET DAILY! And that in some families, the toddler cannot get some Needs met directly. such as illness of the mother; baby-sitters, etc., etc. THEREFORE, the toddler HAS to develop his own COVERT method of getting those needs met!! This gave them validation that their behavior was PURPOSEFUL and that they weren't "crazy" as their bhv had often been called. This is a long story--and I'm starting on my book soon!! But one example was an absolutely HUGE guy, 16 yrs. old, had held off peers with a shot gun, and was very threatening with adults as well as peers. After almost a year, he ended up helping me give a workshop in KCMO at a Midwestern Symposium on B Disorders! He had developed a marvelous sense of humor; was making A's and about to transfer back to the reg HS. I wish we'd taped that!! I do have a tape of a 15 yr-old Dx'd with Asperger's. He not only diagrammed his classroom behavior, but analyzed his Family of Origin and why he'd develped his Pattern for survival!! If this intrigues you, I'd suggest talking it over with the classroom teacher and ask if you could try just a little of this. I'd sure to happy to email with you if you wanted to--and if the student were even remotely interested in trying it. I LOVED teaching--the 5 yrs prior to getting my MA in Guidance and Counseling. I got my CA teaching certificate at grad school at UC Berkeley. They always urged us to look beyond the surface bhv! The term/philosophy of Kaisen is basically, there is always a better way!! I'm retired now--but sure miss mixing-it-up w/the kids!!! AND watching them GROW!!!

What is the hotest items or have a big demand in egypt ? in electronics ?

Q. I am from the US., traveling in 2 weeks & need to bring some hot items that i can sell there --any ideas --plus playstation 3

Answer
Well, before you travel make sure that you know that you will pay customs fees on entrance for every electrical item and your bag will be checked by the customs officers. Electrical items are hot taxing items by law. Will your profit making plan still be worth it?!
If you are able to pay duty and know exactly what you are doing...
*Wiiii and games and accessories at a good price
*i phone - people either love it or hate it
*Unusual things like baby monitors/walkie talkies
*PDAs are not for sale in Egypt but professional people do want them (HP / Palm TX / DEll 51 / etc)
* The Nokia N95 and similar phones are very popular but not sold in the major shops due to s'thing to do with it's gps

People want good high tech items at low prices.

Also remember that most things are available in Egypt now we are moving up in the world...!

So I have cable w/ a wireless router. One computer is plugged into it directly and gets 36/6. But on my laptop being wireless only gets 19/6. the upload is still at 6 mb/s. but why is the download cap dropping so much? its a Linksys E2500. It says it can take up to 300 mb/s ?!??! please help D=

Answer
There are several things that can affect wifi signal and its strength and many things you can do to try and improve things
To start with the basic rule is to position the router as high and as centrally as possible in your house.

1] Try changing the broadcast channel from the wireless setup interface for your router/modem.You can normally access this by typing "http://192.168.0.1/" into your browsers search bar and then look for the wireless settings menu.
You don't say if your router can use the 5GHz frequency or just the 2.4GHz. The best channels in the 2.5GHz spectrum are 1,6, 11, or 13 as they have less overlap with the other channels.

There is a useful article here about how to get the best performance by selecting the best channel.: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/21132/cha…

If you have an android smarthphone, or a friend does, then install the Wifi Analyzer app free from android market and use it to scan for the best channel and change your routers broadcast channel accordingly. This app will aslo show you all the wifi signals in range that your neighbours are using, so you can select a different channel to them, making a stronger signal for you. https://market.android.com/details?id=co…

2] You can use a tool like Nirsofts totally free WirelessNet View to look at all the local wireless signals that are within range and may be competing with your own router and interfering with reception. from here: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wireless_ne…

3] You can buy a Wi-Fi booster like D-Link 645 Smartbeam, here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/D-Link-DIR-645-W…
Devices such as these can actually boost the wifi signal by using multiple beams that bounce of the walls and are intelligently directed toward whatever device [smarhphone, laptop, tablet] you are using on wifi.

4] If your using the 2.4GHz frequency and not the 5GHz then other devices that use this frequency band can alsso interfere with your reception [eg baby monitors and microwave ovens use 2.4GHz]. Try and make sure that none of these devices are situated between your router and your wifi receiver eg laptop, tablet, smarthphone etc

Built new desktop, need wireless?

Tigger

Hi guys. I built a new desktop, and now I need internet. I can't use wired connection for reasons. Right now I'm using a TEW-645UB Trendnet adapter. It works but it only picks up a few bars, and it's laggy in game. I'm using my desktop for gaming.
Is there a better adapter out there?

Answer
That Trednet model is a decent High Power Wireless N Adapter with full backwards support for IEEE 802.11b/g, and support for latest IEEE 802.11n Draft standard. It is likely that the position of the router is causing thee problem.

I would certainly try and improve things by repositioning the router [I have suggested several things below] before rushing out to buy a new adapter that may or may not improve your signal.

It would obviously have helped if you had given details on the make and model of the router and whether it supports draft n wifi standard and if it has "Dual Band" support for broadcasting simultaneously on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequency bands.

There are several things you can do do try and boost signal strength; To start with the basic rule is to position the router as high as possible and there are as few walls as possible between it and the PC.

Things you can do to improve signal strength

1] Try changing the broadcast channel from the wireless setup interface for your router/modem.You can normally access this by typing "http://192.168.0.1/" into your browsers search bar and then look for the wireless settings menu.

Can you recommend a baby monitor (preferably a video monitor) that works from very long distances?

We just moved into a new house where our master bedroom is completely on the opposite side of the house from our son's room. The moniter that we have now works only sporadically (most of the time it flashes "out of range"). I really need one that will work well! It probably doesn't help that our bedroom is converted from the old garage, so there are literally 2 brick walls between our room and our son's room. Please help! Thank you!

Answer
I have a Mobi and it works great in my house. My house isn't huge but I can be upstairs and my daughter's room is downstairs on the other side of the house and it is clear. During the day the pic is in color, but turns to black and white at night. The only static has been when we have it too close to our remote controls and cell phones. It will get fuzzy but we move the items and it is fine.

Not sure if it will work between brick walls, but I have been out in our garage on my treadmill and had no problem.

Should a water monitor be on land more than in the water?

Leonard

I have a baby water monitor and for some reason he's always in the water and never on land. Can it affect him? I've seen him sneezing and a water monitor, cold blooded which suppose to e in beaming heat shouldn't catch a cold. Please tell me what's wrong. He's in a terrarium that's half water half land.

Answer
You have him set up all wrong. Yes, being in the cold water that long can affect him, and will eventually kill him because a cold lizard's metabolism is not working correctly, they are more likely to get sick, etc.

Proper set up for a hatchling/juvie water monitor ~

~large tank with several inches of diggable substrate (topsoil/playground sand mix) and a solid lid
~elevated basking surface with a temp of 125-130 (surface temp)
~temp range low 80s to low 90s
~small water dish for drinking (not soaking)
~secure hides

Your monitor is most likely soaking because it is dehydrated. Give the proper substrate, keep the dirt moist, and the monitor should turn around.

Honestly, if you don't know how to set up a juvie enclosure, or know the answer to this question yourself, you have no business owning this lizard. He will need upgraded to his adult enclosure within the next 12 to 18 months... You do realize that that will need to be a bare minimum of 12x8 feet, and tall enough to hold two plus feet of dirt, basking and climbing areas, etc?? It has the potential to top out at 6 feet, 60 pounds of serious muscle, and will be an eating machine.
