Answer
So how do you clean an LCD monitor screen without buying any of those expensive LCD Monitor Cleaner solutions or Monitor Wipes available in the market ? We look at some proper methods and precautions before you clean the monitor [should apply to HDTVs, projection TVs and Plasma TVs as well]

Think of LCD Displays just like the soft and delicate skin of your newborn baby - Be very gentle and never put even the slightest pressure on the computer screen with your hand.

Second, you need to find a piece of soft cloth - old cotton handkerchiefs lying in your mom's wardrobe should be fine but don't try tissue papers, toilet rolls or even shower towels as the fabric will scratch your screen permanently [like sandpaper or utensil scrubbers]

Either turn the monitor off or set the background to black and hide all the desktop icons and minimize the open windows. This will easily help you identify the dirty areas of the monitor.

To prepare the solution for cleaning LCD monitors, you will need deionized or distilled water and vinegar or iso-propyl alcohol - Don't use tap water or mineral water as they could leave white marks on the screen because of the dissolved salts.

Dilute the vinegar or IPA with distilled water [1:1] and spray this liquid on the cloth. Never ever spray liquid directly onto the LCD screen. Moisten the cloth with this home made LCD cleaner and gently move the wet cloth in just one direction - from top to bottom.

Word of Caution: Be sure that the LCD screen is dry before closing it or using the computer. Do not use any solutions that contain Acetone, ethyl alcohol, toluene, ethyl acid, ammonia, or methyl chloride. Never touch the LCD screen with your fingers as this can cause the pixels to burn out. http://labnol.blogspot.com/2006/11/wipe-clean-lcd-screen-laptop-monitor.html

Answer
Unlike the standard CRT monitors with Glass screens, you are NOT advised to clean an LCD Monitor by wiping it with a piece of dry lint-free cloth since the sensitive display is likely to get scratches from dust particles.

Today i was on Facebook and noticed one of my friends is starting to build her own home studio, she just recently started recording her own songs with her guitar teacher and sells them on itunes and so far she bought 600$+ worth of music stuff and it really shows me that if you try you can succeed. Saying that i was wondering how much would it cost to get the basic recording stuff. If i ever did this it would probably be just instrumental, and what would i need?

Answer
If you want to sound truly professional, here is what you need. It's not that expensive ...

1 - Recording software and broadcast quality computer interface -
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Avid-Pro-Tools-LE-Mbox-Mini-3--3rd-Gen--106091184-i1552697.gc

2 - Studio quality headphones - http://www.guitarcenter.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40fs-Precision-Studiophones-100265885-i1126646.gc

3 - High Quality Condenser Microphone - http://www.guitarcenter.com/Rode-Microphones-NT1-A-Condenser-Mic-Bundle-105619399-i1474748.gc

4 - Microphone stand - http://www.guitarcenter.com/DR-Pro-Tripod-Mic-Boom-Stand-101810125-i1170322.gc

5 - Microphone cable - http://www.guitarcenter.com/Monster-Cable-Performer-500-Microphone-Cable-102792009-i1128678.gc

That's all you need to get started. You may also need a good CD burner (software) but, it's not required. Another extra that I highly recommend which will make you sound a lot more professional when you sing, is the BOSS VE-20 Vocal Performer. http://www.guitarcenter.com/Boss-VE-20-Vocal-Effects-Processor-105654529-i1474806.gc

Eventually you may want a high quality studio monitor but for now you can use the headphones.

You will want to learn about Tunecore and Disc Makers and CD Baby web sites and you should probably join the International Songwriter's Association.

Can I use a key to sync my iPod Nano?

apple_love

My baby brother sat on my lap top and the screen shattered. When I turn it on, all I see is colors mashed together. I plugged my ipod in, and didn't think it was charging, so I plugged it into my home computer. All of my older brother's music went on my ipod and I tried to sync it with my lap top again but I can't see the sync button. So I was wondering if there was a key on the keyboard that I could press and it would synchronize.

=) Thank you

Answer
Sorry I don't believe there is such a button. But try pressing enter, because if iTunes has opened a dialog box asking if you want to sync, pressing enter might work.

The only other thing I can think of to help is trying to took up your main computer's monitor or some othr screeen so you can see what you're doing. Some laptops have the capability to do that.
And if that doesn't work, take it to an electronics store such as best buy. As long as the hard drive still works they can copy all the stuff onto a different computer for you, although that'll cost you some money ( you'd have to call to find out how much exactly).

I am trying to make a cabinet for a tv so that the tv will rise out of it, I would like to control it either by app or less preferably a remote. Does anybody know how I could approach this? I have been told to use a rasberry pi but i'm clueless really.

Answer
I am not a programmer, but you could use existing apps to control the raising of the TV. There is an app called IP Cam Viewer that works with most any inexpensive wireless pan/tilt baby monitors (like Foscam FI8910W), from anywhere in the world via the smartphone and your WiFi router. The camera pan and tilt motors could be removed and used to operate a linear actuator switch (up or down moves a DPDT switch). I think some linear actuators come with limit switches built in. So just add a dc power supply, the linear actuator, and the DPDT switch controlled by the up/down motor of the Foscam. The camera could be focused on the screen to verify its position if you were somewhere else.

How to make old iphone 3g as Home Spy Camera?

Trueme

I have two iPhones, the old iPhone 3g and the new iPhone 4s. now i wanted to use my old iphone 3g (iOs version updated) as a Home Spy Camera and wanted to watch my kids at home live stream to my new iPhone 4s while im at work. i also got my Home Wifi network. is there any best iphone application out there for this matter? or is it possible to use my Home IP address to use and access it for this concept?

Answer
There are many training videos telling us how to make iphone as home spy camera on line.
Um...I've found two:
1. http://www.wonderhowto.com/how-to-use-iphone-as-spy-camera-423938/
2. http://www.wonderhowto.com/how-to-make-iphone-secret-spy-camera-423940/
The second video looks like very easy to access, but I don't know if it is useful for you.

If these two ways are not fit, I suggest you to buy a Baby Monitor or Home Spy Camera. You can visit this online store:
http://www.accessbuy.com/wholesale-Baby-Monitor_120.html
http://www.accessbuy.com/wholesale-IP-Camera_113.html
It's a wholesaler, so its price is very low.

How do you wake up when the baby is crying?

Aaron

My girlfriend can't ever wake up when the baby is crying and this is a issue cause I have to get up and go to work in the mornings and several times I was late just because it is almost impossible to wake her her up, right now I am having her stay at her moms which is pretty far and it is really difficult sometimes to make it to work on time because I watch the baby at nights and in the morning. The first month she was able to wake up without a problem but as I started getting up in the middle of the night and early morning to feed and change the baby the more she started not getting up now it is impossible to wake her up no matter how long the baby cries. Is there some type of baby monitor that is loud and can wake her or some kind of alrm or tips and tricks to wake her up. I mean the baby sleeps in a crib right next to the bet and I don't know what to do I worry so much when I go to work and sometimes her mother tells me that she comes home and she is crying with my girlfriend asleep.there has to be something we can do to make sure she wakes up for the baby so that we can move back home and start our family because she gets really mad when I try to stay at the house by myself and I worry when I stay at my house and believe I have to be at her parents to help even for a bit can anyone help?

Answer
That is not normal - it could be a sign of postnatal depression. Please get her to a doctor to sort this out.

What us a good schedule and ideas for babysitting?

taimie

I will be babysitting 2 girls aged 4&2. They are very well behaved.

Answer
I babysit all ages (at the moment it varies from 7 month to 14 years) for all hours and generally stick to the same routine for all...

08.00 - Waking up and independent play while I prepare breakfast
08.15 - All sit at the table to eat breakfast
08.45 - Cleaning up from breakfast
08.50 - Getting washed and dressed
09.00 - Watch TV
09.30 - Painting or colouring activity
10.00 - Go for a walk (whatever the weather)
11.00 - Wash up from the walk
11.15 – All sit at the table for snacks
11.30 - Board game or jigsaws
12.00 - Independent play while I prepare lunch
12.30 – All sit at the table for lunch
13.00 - Outdoor play for over 2’s and put under 2’s down for a nap
13.30 - Craft activity
14.30 – Wake up the napping children and read together
15.00 – All sit at the table for snacks
15.15 - Educational tasks
15.45 - Independent play
16.00 - Group game
17.00 - Independent play while I prepare dinner
17.30 – All sit at the table for dinner
18.00 - Watching a film
18.30 - Bath time for under 10's and over 10's continue with the film
19.00 - Bedtime for under 5's and over 5's return to film
19.30 - Reading with over 5's
20.00 - Bedtime for 5-10's and reading with over 10-12's and TV for over 12’s
20.30 - Bedtime for under 12’s and reading for over 12’s
21.00 – Bed time for under 14’s.

You can then spend the rest of your evening ensuring the house is cleaned up from the days activities and that the children remain in their beds.

Independent play – This is when you leave the children to play by themselves, keep them within eye shot and supervise what they are doing but allow them to explore their own imagination. Two and five year old girls will usually play make believe something still and quiet. This is your opportunity to catch your breath from the day and to get on with the other chores you need to do.

Go for a walk – No matter what the weather is you should always get the kids outside! This is important because children need fresh air and when they are trapped inside they become more easily agitated and bored. Don’t forget to wrap them up warm if it is raining or take a hat of it is sunny. You may consider collecting leave, pine cones, etc to create a nature collage at your afternoon craft project.

Outdoor play – If you have napping children then remember to take a baby monitor into the garden with you and to leave their bedroom window open in case they wake up. Outdoors you should get the kids running around to wear them out, play with a ball or race them around etc.

Educational tasks – This could include a worksheet you have printed off the internet (Just Google “kid’s worksheets” and you’ll find tonnes) or a colour matching game for younger children.

Group game – This is also important a good game is a treasure hunt, or hide and seek, something everyone can do together.

I would like to get a baby video monitor but I want it in both kids rooms with only one monitor screen. What is the best one on the market for the cheapest price. Or...is there a video system out that has only one camera that I can order a 2nd camera separate for?

Answer
Hi

Like any other products, baby monitors need to suit your lifestyle and satisfy your requirements, even to the slightest of details. So before you purchase one, try to dwell on a number of factors first. These things will not only serve as your guide, they will also help you pick out the best type or brand for your little one.

Some of the things you need to consider are:

Range
Portability
Levels of Interference
Video Monitoring Options

There are more details at the link in the source box about the Best Baby Monitors and I hope they help

Take care

How do you get better reception on a baby video monitor?

KMCelio

I just bought a Summer Video Monitor and it doesn't work without static between two rooms in our small condo. I am hoping there is a way to improve reception, because right now I can't even keep it on at night because the static noise is so great, and when I turn the monitor on the picture is pretty fuzzy and jumps in and out. Any advice?

Answer
Try unplugging any electronic devices between the transmitter and receiver, see if something is causing interference.

Katie

If you were to add a special smoke detector, door bell lights, vibrating alarm clock, TTY, and other technologies, how much would that cost?

Answer
I am 100% Deaf.. So from experience
A TTY is VERYYYYY out dated, it is hardly used now. We have Video Phones now and the VRS (Video Rely Services) They are provided by the government by agencies such as Sorenson VRS or Purple communication or ZVRS. All require a TV or Computer and a high speed internet hookup. That cost is your own responsibility to provide. (19inch flat screen 299$ best buy, Dell ultrabook 699$ internet ATT 56$ with cell serivce a month)
The alarm clocks very in price depending on what other features you would like it to have. a basic alarm only function can be found between 25-60$ the more fancy one that can attach to lights or smoke detectors and provide multifunction I have found to be about 200$
The door bells are an easy hook-up and can be applied to all lights or certain ones in the house each adapter is about 10$
The smoke detectors can be bought at about 65$ for each room you want one in, or you can have a universal system installed professionally for about 500$
Baby monitors can be attached to the alarm clock as a separate function otherwise I find them hard to use.
For the cell phone, I have VRS on my Iphone and a discount on my bill because I do not need a voice plan. unlimited texting. there is also face-time and other things like skype and google plus. Also with phones there is a nation wide program called Cap-tell (if the Deaf person can and willingly uses voise to communicate) that captions everything on a landlines phone(or cell phone is you have sprint) that the hearing person on the other line is saying
ummm thats about it from what I can think of. Other wise for appointments and class and college stuff like that and for more direct communication I use a ASL (sign language) interpreter.
There are also High power hearing aids, cochlear implants and the BAHA (bone anchored hearing aid) if you want to try and "restore" some hearing, or use residual hearing you may have. but note these methods are case to case and are not always effective and can fail

Our Internet Connection is very bad and we are thinking of getting a new router. Any Suggestions.?

Trevor

We have a Belkin N450 Router. We have at least 10 Devices connected and the Router can handle it, we want to buy a new one of upgrade it. We have a Computer, 2 Ipads, 3 Iphones/Ipod, Xbox, Kindle Fire. What would you recommend.

Answer
Upgrading the router will not improve your Internet connection.

How fast is your Internet connection?

You can measure your Internet speed here: http://speedtest.net

That being said,

A wireless router connects two separate networks and manages the traffic between them.

In most home network applications the router connects your local group of computers and devices known as the LAN with the Internet, commonly called the WAN or Wide Area Network.

For example, If you have a 5 Mbps Internet connection, the maximum shared Internet bandwidth available to all of the devices connected to the router will be 5 Mbps.

Any bandwidth others users or devices on your connection are using will be deducted from the total WAN (Internet) bandwidth that is available to you.

If you have a 5 Mbps Internet connection and one user is utilizing 4 Mbps of the bandwidth to stream a Netflix movie, that only leaves 1 Mbps for all of the rest of the users on the LAN.

In simple terms, the more users you have the more speed will be required. Streaming video, such as Netflix and Hulu require a lot of bandwidth. Here are the minimum recommendations from Netflix. https://support.netflix.com/en/node/306

Many people would be likely be surprised at how many active connections their wireless router has. I have dozens. cell phones, tablets, iPods, game consoles, laptops, desktops, ROKU boxes, Internet enabled devices such as TVs and audio receivers, and the list goes on.

Fast wireless routers and connections are designed to stream large files on your LAN quickly. The high speed routers permit fast transfer of files between devices connected to your LAN, however WAN speed is still limited by your ISP. The only way to Improve your Internet speed is to upgrade your plan or switch to a faster ISP.

If you still want to upgrade for other reasons other than Internet speed,

It pretty much comes down to what features you want and how much you want to spend.

As far as the brand goes, the brand is not as important as the model. Some manufacturers release a good model but the next is crap. I would look at the Amazon reviews of models that interest you. Even if you don't buy from Amazon the reviews will tell you a lot about which models to avoid. Look for at least 15 or more reviews with a 4 star or better rating. Read a few and see if they sound like the particular model will work for your application.

For under $50, this Medialink is the most popular and highly reviewed model. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A3YN0Z0/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00A3YN0Z0&linkCode=as2&tag=excharge-20

If you want to spend a little more, many routers support "Dual Band". http://www.amazon.com/s/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&keywords=dual%20band%20router&linkCode=ur2&qid=1374595143&rh=n%3A172282%2Cn%3A541966%2Cn%3A300189%2Ck%3Adual%20band%20router%2Cp_72%3A1248879011&rnid=1248877011&tag=excharge-20

Dual band routers have multiple wireless radios enabling broadcast on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands simultaneously. Using the 5 GHz band cuts down on interference from cordless phones and microwave ovens.. Not all devices can use the 5 GHz frequency. Many laptops and other devices only operate at 2.4 GHz. Thus the need for dual band routers.

In any case,

You should try to centrally locate your wireless router or gateway up high and away from dense walls and electrical and 2.4 GHz wireless interference such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, baby monitors, etc.

Wireless signals, including 2.4 and 5 GHz, are affected by many factors including distance, wall density, electrical interference, directional antenna range, etc.

All of these factors will affect your actual wireless range. As wireless connection quality varies the connection speeds are renegotiated. The WLAN connection may start at 150 Mbps and end up at less than 10 Mbps or drop entirely.

Your best bet is always a direct Ethernet connection to the router, especially for fixed devices that don't need mobility. Ethernet is unaffected by wireless interference and will give you a rock solid, stable network connection.

Good Luck...

What is the best recording software for PC?

best hd baby monitor
on Dropcam HD Wi-Fi Wireless Video Monitoring Camera
best hd baby monitor image

Oleg

I have tried multiple recording softwares and none seems suit me.

I want to start a YouTube channel, but they stop me in that.

- Bandicam, problem is (for me at least) bad sound quality.
- Fraps, huge file size.
- Dxtory, crashes my game when I attempt to record.
- BB FlashBack, it has lag, can't even handle the game.

So I'm looking for a good recording software to use for games like CoD, Minecraft, World of Wacraft and such. It would be good if it provided lower file size (as Bandicam), free if possible, good quality sound/video quality + provides me good FPS.

Thanks.

Answer
There are a number of good "Screen Capture" recording software.. the problem is, most games lag or show hesitations on 'screen capture' software.. especially if the game of high quality like "call of Duty"..

You can remedy these by having a really powerful computer:
pump up the ram to max, the graphic card to max and anything that makes a gaming computer better to max..

while keeping the quality of picture lower, like setting the game graphics to lowest settings, and the quality of recording to lowest settings with standard definition SD instead of high definition HD..

All of which will produce a poor quality video..

To improve the recording quality, you may consider lightweight, simple or less sophisticated Screen Capturing software that require less system resources (less memory, less processor power, etc..) like FastStone screen capture video recoder http://www.faststone.org/FSCaptureDetail.htm and CamStudio screen capture video recorder http://camstudio.org/ which are baby software in comparison with high-end expensive tools that may and may not work as you hope, like: Camtasia (the best software for screen capture video recorder) at http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia.html , Adobe Premier http://www.adobe.com/PremierePro‎ and Corel VideoStudio at http://apps.corel.com/lp/emea/webinar/index.html‎ ..

The problem is always that there is not enough resources for both high quality games and screen capture video recording especially if your computer is not up to the challenge..
and you may have to sacrifice the quality if you wish to use software to record the game..

The answer is going hardware.. what most gamers on YouTube do is set up a camera behind them while playing in front of the monitor or the TV screen..

YEAACH, I know.. but to produce HD quality picture, consider Hardware screen capturing devices.. and you'd need three things:
1• upgrading your Graphic card to the ones that support HDMI first (but read a bit about HDCP in Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hdcp )..
2• buy a good Screen Capturing device.. my experience is with Hauppauge HD PVR http://www.hauppauge.com/site/products/data_hdpvr2plus-gaming.html
3• devices like Hauppauge require a second computer or a laptop to perform the actual recording, but it doesn't have to be a high end computer.. my old laptop 5 years old with no 3D graphic card can do just that.. (just borrow your friends' laptop for a while, I hope its not a big deal)..

See the picture below, and instead of the Xbox being connected to the Hauppauge device, imagine your gaming computer is connected through that plug instead.. and the laptop is the second computer that runs the Hauppauge device..
Oh and by the way the TV is just optional.. you don't have to have the HD TV connected..

4• if you encounter an HDCP problem (that's why I ask you to read a bit about them)..
99% of the time, HDCP is not an issue while recording a game from a PC HDMI output but there is this 1% of the time that HDCP is an issue..
Most professionals remedy that by buying HDMI splitters that has the ability to override the HDCP protocol and cancel them.. or use additional professional tools like HDfury 2 or HD fury 3.. http://HDfury.com

And that's how professionals do it..
All the best.. and good luck

Can I stll get pregnant and have PCOS?

beautiful3

My dr jus advised that Ihave PCOS. I have hd my period for the last 6 weeks on and off and she prescribed Yasmin for me. I am scheduled to see an endocrinologist in about a month. I have only been pregnant once and I have been trying since I lost teh 1st baby a year ago. I am scared that I will never be able to have children. Is it possible for me to still have kids and have PCOS?

Answer
It is possible to have children with PCOS, but it's also more difficult to get and stay pregnant. It's a great thing that you're seeing an endocrinologist, who is often more prepared to manage PCOS symptoms than a gynecologist is. The endocrinologist will probably monitor a number of things-hormone levels, blood sugar and insulin use, and so on, and help decide on a course of treatment and management. This is very likely to include drugs like metformin, which helps maintain healthy blood sugar levels, and restores ovulation in many people, and clomid which makes you ovulate. While some doctors are reluctant to keep you on metformin when you are pregnant, it also may reduce the risk of miscarriage for those of us with PCOS by as much as 45%.

One of my favorite resources for PCOS information and support is Soulcysters.com, a website entirely about and for women with PCOS, with treatment information and message boards and everything. I've found some great support there when I've needed it.

Good luck, and best wishes. I hope it works out well for you.

Angel

Went to my OBs office for my appointment. I'm at 27 weeks and the midwife was using the external monitor to listen to the baby's heartbeat and she was having a hard time finding a spot that was steady because the baby was moving like crazy. She said she kept getting an echo. I go in for my ultrasound tomorrow and because of having to reschedule a few times this will be my first one. I'm just wondering if it's possible that I'm carrying twins and that the echo she was hearing was a second heartbeat. I have felt a lot of movement with this pregnancy, more so than with my entire pregnancy with my first child.

Answer
Your midwife should have detected 2 seperate heartbeats if you were carrying twins. Some fetuses are just alot more active than others. My son was active so much I thought I was carrying twins as well, but it's normal. The echo is a sound in the uterus (hard to tell what sound exactly it was), perfectly normal. See what the ultrasound technician tells you and go from there. Good luck.

Ever get creepy interference on your baby monitor?

C

Parents, have you ever picked up creepy or odd interference on your baby monitor? I live in a very populated area and I have picked up odd interference a few times.

Answer
oh yes! A number of times.

But the weirdest one was when my oldest was young.

My husband & I were getting ready for bed one night & I turned on the monitor. He was brushing his teeth & the second I turned it on I heard a man talking. It was so clear too. He was talking to a woman. We could hear both sides of the conversation. My husband thinks it them talking on a phone, not in the same house. So he thinks we picked up their cordless phone. This in 1997 or so.

I called my husband & he came in. The couple was talking about going somewhere & a hotel. I then recognized the voice. It was one of our neighbors! But he wasn't talking to his wife!!! He actually said the womans name a few times. Plus I knew my neighbors wives voice.

We actually listened for awhile. lol I know it was wrong but it was clear he was flirting with her & you bet she was flirting back. They talked about a buisness trip and meeting up at a hotel. No clear sayings of cheating but for sure flirting. He'd tell her what to wear and mentioned perfume. My husband & I then turned it off.

I could never look at him the same after that. My husband & I never said anything to the wife either. We were not 100% sure. But a month or so later they divorced & sold their home. We actually told our other neighbors then what we had heard. They had seen signs of cheating too.

What creeped me out was . . . could they have ever heard us? Plus for just that second hearing a mans voice coming from what I thought was my daughters room really scared me.

We have some cordless head phones. They at least 8-10yrs old. But we often pick up CBs from what seems like Truckers on near by highways.

I have 3 smartphones in my home, 5 laptops, 2 ipads, and one smart vizeo tv.
I have a D-link DIR-850L Wireless router...
(The router is located in the family room, and most of the devices stay downstairs near the router, the smart tv is upstairs though....i don't know if this makes a difference)

What devices should be connected to the 2.4ghz and which devices should be connected to the 5ghz network..?

Thanks for any help! :)

Answer
It's incredible what people don't know about dual speed routers. You also want a "simultaneous" dual speed router so it will support both at the same time. Otherwise it will only run at the lower speed.
~
All 802.11b and g devices run on 2.4GHz only. That is also where a lot of your other devices run like Bluetooth, baby monitors etc.

5GHz is for 802.11n and has a higher speed and less interference. Great for video streaming & gaming. Nothing, repeat, NOTHING, can share both & "double the speed". No such animal.

Your router has no relationship to what your ISP uses.

How to make a Video baby monitor?

i dont kno

Can someone please tell me how to make a video baby monitor? The only problem is i dont have any fancy gadgets, like an iphone or ipad or ianything! lol.
i have an extra laptop and i have an old webcam. could this work to make a video baby monitor??
i want to be able to connect to it somehow from my laptop that iam currently using, like skyp or something??
Iam very bad with computers lol
I understand what your saying and thats why i dont want to spend any money on this. But if i can figure out a way to do it with stuff i have laying around i would like to see him, and not have to sneak into his room to see him. ( because yes i will be going in to look at him, i have from day one and i dont think that will stop for quiet awhile)

Answer
I can't help you with any of the technical stuff, but I wanted to say that video baby monitors are quite useless. Its one of those baby items that is totally unnecessary.

What's important is that you *hear* your baby wake up and cry for you. Its not important to *see* your baby - after all, you will be very, VERY tired yourself. Its not like you'll be up all night watching your baby sleep.

I'm trying to be more natural and eco-friendly any tips?

Answer
There are a gazillion things to do.

I've really been trying to cut electrical use over the last year. We've replaced every bulb in our house with Compact Fluorescent or regular fluorescent bulbs. We've planted trees near windows, installed room darkening shades, weatherstripping, and window tint to keep rooms from heating up so the AC doesn't run as often. We bought a 7 day programmable thermostat so we can have the AC adjust throughout the day automatically so we're not needlessly cooling when no one is home. We're diligent about turning off the computer every night, turning off lights, keeping doors and windows open during nice weather, and turning off fans when no one is in the room (fans don't make the room cooler, they just make it feel cooler - a sort of wind chill factor).

We bought a remote control power controller called Bye-Bye Standby from Amazon. With a click of the remote you can kill the phantom power used by your electronics. I can turn off all my electronics and then kill the power with this thing and hear the electronics really turn off. Of course this uses batteries, but our outlets are not reachable behind our freecycled entertainment center, but I guess you can't win 'em all.

Prior to doing all these things, our previous low on our electric bill was right about $100. We've since had electric bills in $60-$70 range, and once even hit $50 right on the head. So, obviously we're using less electricity. Most all these changes don't cost a whole lot and actually pay for themselves in the long run.

I mentioned Freecycle before. Search for a Freecycle group in your area. This is a recycle program in which people give away stuff to each other for free, no strings attached. Our local Freecycle is actually run through a Yahoo group. We've given away old pots/pans, clothes, baby stuff, a computer monitor, etc. and have gotten stuff like a lamp and a basketball hoop. So, instead of this stuff ending up in the landfill, it's still being used and it was all free.

Also, go to the library to get videos and books, rather than buying them or renting them online. Because you are borrowing from the local library fewer of the videos and books need to be produced so less paper or less plastic is used and it saves on transportation costs. Our library is about 2 miles away. Netflix, Amazon, etc. are several states away so to get something from them requires a lot more fuel to get the same thing to me. Best of all, the library is free.

Shop at a local fruit and vegetable stand if possible. We go to one that is about 6 miles round-trip out of my way. However, the prices are cheaper than the local grocery store and most of the produce is local, unlike the grocery store which is more international. So I'm saving money and it's better for the environment because the products don't have to be shipped as far prior to consumption.

Complete the recycle circle. When possible, buy 100% post-consumer paper, or paper-packaging. Buy things made out of recycled plastic like plastic "wood" boards rather than pressure treated/chemical treated wood.

Buy things made out of bamboo, which is a fast growing, rigid grass that can be used like wood and in place of wood, so fewer slow growing trees need to be chopped down.

Have illicit drug addiction/usage rates increased or decreased over the years?

Q. I am having trouble finding comprehensive statistics regarding drug use that go back a number of years. Any sources of information would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
The two surveys that cover this are Monitoring the Future and the Household Survey on Drug Abuse. An internet search will turn up various links to them. You will probably not find extensive stats that predate the Internet age.

Before you look for them, you should understand that there are a number of problems with the surveys.

The first is that people are not likely to answer a question honestly when someone asks them if they have recently engaged in criminal activity.

The second is that it depends on what you mean by increased or decreased. Drug use goes through various cycles and use of one drug may go up while another goes down.

The third is the time frame in which you ask. Again, drug use goes in cycles so you can expect to see rises in the use of some drugs for a while, with later falls in the same use. Depending on which years you pick, you would get an entirely different answer.

You should also note that when people attempt to answer this question it is often because they have a political agenda so they will pick whatever numbers suit their political point. If the numbers don't suit their political point, then government officials are prone to just make up numbers to suit them.

If you look at the really long term there is an interesting picture. Prior to 1914, all of these drugs were legal and sold over the counter in the US without restrictions. Kids could buy the drugs as easily as they buy aspirin today and heroin was even included in baby colic remedies. Even under those conditions the rates of addiction were not substantially different than they are today.

If you want to understand the subject, the best place to start is the Consumers Union Report on Licit and Illicit Drugs at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/Library/studies/cu/cumenu.htm This book details the history of the laws and describes the biggest single cause of drug epidemics. It is the one book to read it you read only one.

Are there any institutions such as the American Planned Parenthood in the Netherlands?

Dana

My sister recently moved to Amsterdam to live with her boyfriend. She does not have health insurance and is not a citizen. She just found out she was pregnant. Since she does not have a lot of money, are there any institutions that specialize in women's health that are on a sliding scale such as Planned Parenthood? Thank you for any help you can give me!

Answer
I take it you mean that your sister is living illegally in the Netherlands? That puts her and the baby in a very tricky and vunerable situation. Without living legally here she would never be able to register the birth and then her child would also fall out of the system and I really do think that's a scarey situation to place a child in.

To be part of the process which is provided to pregnant women then by she would have to have the basic health insurance which then gives her the right to visit both the doctor (the first appointment) and then afterwards the midwife service which will monitor and see her pregnancy through to term

I really don't want to preach, but as her sister I would really urge you to appeal to her sensibilities and look to the long-term. Of course she wants to be with her bf, but now there is a child involved then the needs of the child should be paramount over their own desires. It would be honestly better for the child for her to return to the US and have a quiet & unstressful pregnancy and then at the same time apply legally for the family formation visa option so that she could move to the NL with her child to join the father. If she is found to be living illegally in the Netherlands then this will jepodise her chance for a residence permit in the future, and let's face it, she can't live the rest of her (and her child's life) as an illegal immigrant and hope that neither will ever get caught (e.g. how will the child be able to register for school for example?)

As it stands the national policy on illegal immigrants means that local authorities are not allowed to help illegal alien. There are exceptions to this in the case of vunerable aliens who are homeless but your sister as an American living with a Dutch citizen would not be shown this degree of sympathy I fear

At this point it suddenly dawned on me, I was on the assumption that she would want to keep the child but was looking up what the American Planned Parenthood association was and reading I realised this was my assumption and you didn't state it either way. Do you mean that she wants to terminate the pregnancy? If so then she would have to seek a doctor to start the process anyway. Even Dutch associations offering advice e.g. CASA which offers part of the services which the APP does in this regard (if I understand what the APP does) confirms that you need to consult a doctor first and will need this referal letter in the case of a termination http://www.casa.nl/en

I'm afraid I don't know what else to recommend for her, and hope that maybe someelse has more ideas

I need a link to a baby monitor with a 3 mile range(actually 2 miles but some with thresh hold due to trees and terrain). or some device composed of 2 parts, one only sends audio, one only receives audio. It will be used to monitor my 10 year old sister while I am in the barn 2 miles from the house. I am open to any options as long as there is a link with it, and I'd like to spend less than $200 if possible. Thank you

Look at the Lorex website.

What are some baby items you really enjoy having?

Mrs.

I'm talking about things that the baby likes, or things that make life more convienent. Not MUST haves, but things you really like having.

Answer
well, u can go to babies r us website and they have a list for ppl who are going to register..of course it has a lot of things on there that you don't need, but if you weed through you can get what you need out of it...the things i liked;found most useful, etc......

.i would def recommend:
a diaper genie 2; idk why ppl don't like them, there is NO smell in my dd 's room
changing table..will save your back, good for diap changes, clothes changes, sponge baths, etc and you have shelves to store your new baby must haves....i have canvas bins on the shelves to store things that are good to have in reach or easily available...
monitor--i like the graco imonitor, recently bought a second one for another room in the house bc i liked the other one so much, it has been working well for over 8 mos now, and it has good range, battery life, and i can hear EVERYTHING; never any interference....it works great..
boppy pillow with cotton covers, soft ones don't fit as well for some reason
lots of baby hangers, and baby hangers with clips to keep outfits together
primo euro bathtub
prince lionheart diaper depot and wipewarmer; ours works well and the wipes are still very warm when we get them to out dd's bottom; and she doesn't freak out when we are out and they aren't warmed, but seems to appreciate it when they are..
health kit: brush, comb, thermometer (not an ear one, not as accurate), nail clippers, etc.
baby meds, generic is just as good and a lot cheaper...desitin(or plain zinc oxide if you can find it)..not creamy, has less zinc ox in it....infant mylicon and tylenol
lots of diapers , make sure wherever you buy them will let you exchange them for a diff size if you need to even after the return period...brus let me do that, and buy a small pack of a couple brands to see which you prefer before you open the big boxes...wipes, lots of them, without alcohol or fragrance! we use swaddlers diapers and pampers sensitive wipes; no rashes, no reactions to their ingredients, diapers hold a lot when they have too and the netting tends to keep the wet off her bottom...
lots of baby washclothes, you may have to use them on baby's bum if it is really sensitive and gets a rash....and baby towels, but you could use your reg towels if money is an issue

swing, pref swings two ways and plugs in instead of batteries
bouncy seat
infant travel system! easy, easy, easy--we got the graco tour deluxe; it is great, folds with one hand, several seating positions, lays flat for sleep; has a big basket underneath and cup holders for mom and dad, one for baby , place for snacks for baby, and a 'pocket' up top for keys, cell phone, whatever you wanna put there...
play yard, get one with bassinet feature if you want to, easier to keep baby in your room for a while before putting them in crib in their room=we have chicco discovery and it is awesome, has more padding than most, easy to wash..machine wash, most are wipe down...very sturdy, has nightlight, vibration, etc and a flip up change table, has wooden slats that slide in under mattress for support...not that much more exp than the others and much better in my opinion
passys--she loves soothies and that is all she will take..
baby wash, again frag free, dye free
frag free , dye free laundry detergent
clothes hamper or basket
lingerie bag for socks, mittens, anything little so they don't get lost in the wash...
something to put baby toys in
extra toy links
lullaby cd and small cd player; my dd has come to love white noise, she naps with a fan and a womb bear; sleeps at night with a fan....
oh, mosquito cover for your infant carrier..it's where you can see in , baby can see out, but strangers cant just walk up and touch your baby, and they will!!!!!
all i can come up with now...LOL
diaper bags; big one for everything you may need, leave in car unless you will be somewhere a long time, and a small one to stick what you will need for a short run in so you don't have to haul the bigger one

if ffing:
avent formula dispenser; has better review than the ones made by sassy, and convert to a snack cup later...i loved it so much i bought a second one!
bottles--really liked playtex ventaire advanced when she was young, more pieces but it's easy to get them clean when the top and bottom comes off...and they vent through the bottom instead of the nip so no bubbles or foam going back up into baby's milk; they will leak if you don't put them together correctly, but we have had no probs with them and have never had to replace any parts on them..if u decide on them and have leaks, email me and i will explain how to keep them from leaking...:O)
bottle and nip brushes--i really like the ones by munchking that don't have a sponge on the end of the brush, they come in diff colors mixed with white and have a great nip brush in the handles....
drying racks--again, i really like munchkins...
formula mixer: i like dr brown's formula pitcher bc you don't shake it it is only abo

The baby monitor is by our heads. Our little diva is not a crying baby. She is a very happy baby. Our prince's room is next to the nursery and she keeps him up too. She coos and plays loudly for half of the night. The only time that she stops is when one of us goes into the nursery and she just smiles at us. Crying is easy, but she plays and makes all kinds of noises. She is fine, but I never want to turn the monitors off. Suggestions.

Answer
aww thats soooo cute. i suggest just turning it down a bit. if shes really crying you can hear more easily. so either that, or put it further away in the room. hopefully that helps =]

We're expecting a little girl very soon and are wanting to get a puppy for her to grow up with. We're wanting a dog that's not going to be too big and is more of a quiet dog. My boyfriend's also wanting to get a hairless cat once our daughter is older so I'm thinking this dog needs to be pet friendly also. What are some good choices to look into?

Answer
None --- absolutely none. You will have your hands full with the baby and hardly need to be training a puppy too.

On top of that, dogs can NEVER be left alone with young children, they need to be monitored so nothing happens.
The kid pulls the dog's tail, picks it up, gets bitten. Not the dog's fault, but dog gets dumped usually.

Our rescue never adopts to families with small children for that reason.

You have a LOT to learn about dogs to begin with, no dog comes "pet friendly" and quiet, you train a dog, takes patience, time and lots of effort.

Please, do yourself, your baby to be, and some poor dog a favor and wait until your child is at least 8 or so before you get a dog - you are being way too ambitious at the moment - concentrate on your new baby and forget pets right now. You would be unfair to your baby and the dog to have both at this time in your life.

What to expect and prepare for my pregnant dog?

Rocketdog

I want her to be in best shape.. She is a chihuahua.

1. Is it ok we feed her cooked chicken breast pieces?
2. Does it have to be warm where she is? Im guessing yes
3. Tell me anything i need to know.

And 4, we have a professional coming over and we are gonna call him when she starts giving birth, but to prepare ourselves. She lives in the laundry room, nice and quiet and we talk her on walks daily.

Answer
Thats protein, yes thats fine for her!

Room temperature around 70-80 degress is good...

you must know that you need to monitor the feedings and make sure each puppie is drinking milk from the mom.

Vet bills are going to cost you, be ready

They will poop a lot, be ready to clean up a lot, get dog wipes to clean babies when they get poop on them

The mom will eat the egg sack yolk, this is normal. Let her eat it. It has nutritonal value for her.

Do not help the baby get out of the yolk sack let the mom and baby do it on their own.

Be careful trying to pick up a baby dog, mom might be defensive (normal)

If i were you,
id buy one of those plastic play pools for kids and create almost like a bed for her in it and have her sleep there until she gives birth. This gives room for all the babies to move around, and is easy to clean, rather than off the floor or a dog bed.

This is going to be a great experience for you and well worth it. You will know why when it happens. The babies are going to be so small and so cute and you will just fall in love with all of them..
It was a great experience for us, I will give you that. :D
worth every minute of our time and every cent lol

ISO baby video/audio monitors with 2 video screens to watch and 2 cameras to record 2 different rooms at once.?

I need to find a video/audio baby monitor that has 2 screens to watch from 2 different rooms. Ex...one video screen so I can watch from downstairs kitchen and one video screen for my husband to watch from upstairs office. Even with 2 video screens AND 2 cameras also, would be ideal. I can watch from kitchen and husband can watch from upstairs office as well as dual cameras to record when 1 baby is upstairs and 1 baby is downstairs. does such a creature even exist?
Can anyone recommend a good baby monitor that has these features? I need the capability to have screen/receiver in 2 different rooms at once. It would be good if I had a base in two different rooms but that's not as important as the screen. We need to be able to watch the screens simultaneously when mommy is downstairs in the kitchen and daddy is upstairs in his office. If it also has 2 bases to watch one baby in one room and 1 baby in another room would be good too but not as important as the screen/receivers. At this point, I'm ready to have the entire home wired with closed circuit monitoring throughout b/c I haven't had any luck finding what I need. :(

Answer
What is your question, Elaine? Also, have you googled to see if such equipment even exists? Why do both of you have to keep such a close eye on your baby? Millions of us raised our babies safely before these fancy accoutrements even existed!

How much did you spend on your newborn for yhe first three months?

Coolchikk

My baby hasnt come yet but I spent 800 on all necessities non were used ,had to get a bassinett though couldnt afford a crib with changer like I so desperately wanted :( a car seat, etc etc im not breastfeeding and I get free formula through wic. Also I didnt get baby monitors. So how much did you spend?

Answer
I would definitely reconsider breastfeeding your baby as it is not only good for your baby, but for your health. Breastfeeding decreases your risk of cervical and breast cancers. I would try and breastfeed. After a couple of times, if it doesn't work for you, then breastfeeding just wasn't meant to be.

Expect to change your baby's diaper around 20 times a day when they are first born. That means you will go through around 30 X 20= 600 diapers a month! I hope you have a lot of diapers stocked up. Don't open the boxes that you won't use right away- you can return them if your baby grows and doesn't fit them anymore.

Did you say that you do not have a car seat? You don't have to get an infant car seat for an newborn. Another option besides infant seats are convertible car seats. You can use a convertible car seat for a newborn provided that the harness is adjusted at or slightly below your baby's shoulders (when rear facing, the harness needs to be adjusted at or below the child's shoulders). The Cosco Scenera is an affordable convertible car seat that goes up to 35 lbs in the rear facing position and has low slots for the harness so that it is likely that it will fit your baby well. It costs around $40 at Walmart. Most babies outgrow their infant car seats with as little as 6 months of use to as much as a 1 year of use, so buying a convertible car seat would be the best option. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommends that kids ride rear facing as close to age 4 as possible. They recommend this do to the reasons below:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8gU9zzCGA8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvyIv9QVRBE

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Cosco-Scenera-Convertible-Car-Seat-Renaissance/16932760
Above link: Here is the Cosco Scenera

Most parents don't use the diaper changing station like how they planned. Trust me :)
I always found that it is much less stressful to change a baby on the floor. You don't have to worry about the baby rolling over or falling. Everyone in my family ended up changing their baby on the floor (but this is just my family).

Always buy baby clothes a couple of sizes bigger than what your baby is- your baby will outgrow these rather quickly. This means skip newborn clothes- get 3 month sizes and even a couple sizes bigger than that. (I believe the sizes start at newborn and then skips to 3 months).

Remember that babies just love being loved and cuddled. You can never give your child too much attention.

At what age should a newborn begin sleeping in the nursery?

bill

My daughter is 8 days old and has been sleeping in a bassinet beside our bed. How long should she sleep in the bassinet in the master bedroom before she can begin to sleep in the nursery? In case it matters, the nursery is across the hall from the master bedroom on the second floor of my house and we have baby monitoring video/audio equipment and we have the pads that prevent her from rolling over onto her stomach.

Answer
The people who are answering (so far) are giving you their opinions. But the AAP safe sleep guidelines (SIDS prevention) recommend that a baby be in the parents' room for 6 months or more. This is so that she can monitor your (more mature) sleep patterns. It as nothing to do with 'safety equipment" which can not substitute for a parents' presence.
