Superwoman

I have a portable hand held baby monitor and when I turn off the base and turn ON the hand held I see another baby sleeping! This only happens when my base is off. When I turn on the base, I see my babies room.

Answer
That is actually quite dangerous. When I had my son we could hear the baby over the road and it did freak me out a little.

Using a different charger for a portable DVD player?

Alice Hart

I'm about to go on a road trip with three year old and can't find the charger for his portable DVD player. I found a couple of different chargers that do fit in the device (I haven't tried them plugged in) for example the Swiffer sweeper-vac and his baby monitors. I don't know much about electronics and I don't know if it will ruin it being charged by a charger that isn't FOR it?

Is there anything I can do?

Answer
You need to find one the voltage, current, and polarity/plug of the original.

They are usually 9 to 12V, and 750mA to 2A, positive center.

Have you heard of this brand?

I am wanting to get a baby video monitor and the one I was interested in (Summer slim one) has so many bad reviews. I found one on ebay but I have never heard of the brand. Here is the link to the auction:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/110775042052?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649#ht_3607wt_936
Has anyone heard of this brand? Or do you have one like this? If so, what would you say about it? Is it a good monitor?
Thank you!
Another question, what does 2.4GHz mean?

Answer
There is no name brand, wireless is very ambiguous. I'd be wary of those 2.4GHz, systems there is no mention of encryption of the signal to the base from the camera. Since anyone with a similar receiver can view the signal if it is indeed not encrypted in some way. You should ask the seller to confirm. Also if you have a cordless phone you should check if that runs on the same radio frequency. Because possible interference might occur. If you are willing you can spend a little bit more and if have a recent wireless router you can get a wireless network camera, such as this http://www.dlink.com/category/productcategories/?cid=7 Which would be encrypted signal, could view on a computer or smartphone, and even on the internet via a private website mydlink.com. I've purchase a D-Link network camera over 10 years ago for the very same reason, to monitor my baby. Now that my babys are no longer babys I still use it to monitor my home when I am away.

Routers for home use?

Sol

I currently have a desktop at home and a wired broadband connection to go with it. What I'm looking for is a router (with modem) which will enable me to use the same connection on my laptop as well as my smartphone. My desktop is placed in the east-most room and hence there are 3 walls separating the farthest room from it. So, a router with a good range would be necessary. Also a wifi on/off button would be handy. And will turning off wifi disable the connection to my desktop as well? What brands and models would you recommend? (As far a the price is concerned I'm not looking to spend too much but don't want to buy a really cheap one either. So price range : moderate).
Any help, much apreciated.

Answer
Two types of Internet devices are commonly sold.

1. Combination modem / routers, often called gateways.

2. Stand alone routers which can be connected to a stand alone modem.

DSL and Cable modems use different technology, for this reason you can't use a cable gateway (DOCSIS) with DSL or use a DSL gateway (ADSL2+) with a cable Internet connection.

Depending on the type of service you have, you'll need the proper type of wireless gateway or a broadband DSL or cable modem and separate wireless router.

The modem or gateway must be compatible with your service provider. A stand alone router will work with any broadband Internet connection.

It is hard to find a standalone DSL modem, most devices sold are wireless ADSL2+ gateways such as this. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004NBZ98K/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B004NBZ98K&linkCode=as2&tag=excharge-20

It gets very good customer reviews and costs about 65 bucks. I wrote about it here: http://isp1.us/reviews/actiontec-gt784wn-dsl-modem-router/

For cable service, Personally I would just add a wireless router your existing modem. If you go this route you'll need to add a wireless router of your choice. The modem needs to be compatible with the ISP. You can choose practically any router, they are fairly inexpensive depending on the features you desire. http://www.amazon.com/s/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&keywords=wireless%20router&linkCode=ur2&qid=1374971707&rh=n%3A172282%2Cn%3A541966%2Cn%3A300189%2Ck%3Awireless%20router%2Cp_72%3A1248879011&rnid=1248877011&tag=excharge-20

This option gives you more versatility. Router speeds and features change much more frequently than cable modems do. If you have separate units you can upgrade one if you like.

As far as wireless range goes,

Wireless signals are affected by many factors including distance, wall density, electrical interference, directional antenna range, etc.

All of these factors will affect your actual wireless range. As wireless connection quality varies the connection speeds are renegotiated. The connection may start at 300 Mbps and end up at less than 20 Mbps or drop entirely.

Just because a particular wireless router model works good at one location does not guarantee that it will have similar performance in a different location due to variances in the factors listed above.

You should try to centrally locate your wireless router or gateway up high and away from dense walls and electrical and 2.4 GHz wireless interference such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, baby monitors, etc.

For serious gaming or video streaming your best bet is a direct Ethernet connection. Ethernet is unaffected by wireless interference and will give you a rock solid, stable network connection.

No matter what you decide to buy, as far as the brand goes, the brand is not as important as the model. Some manufacturers release a good model but the next is crap. I would look at the Amazon reviews of models that interest you. Even if you don't buy from Amazon the reviews will tell you a lot about which models to avoid. Look for at least 15 or more reviews with a 4 star or better rating. Read a few and see if they sound like the particular model will work for your application.

Good Luck...

I've noticed that recently, tons of traffic cameras have been installed on Highway 95 in Florida where I live. There are so many, practically every section of road will be within reach of the cams. But I also noticed that there is some sort of flat panel transducer that is pointed roughly at the road on each camera pole. What would those things be for? They remind me of the transducers used in E-Pass lanes. Could they be used to monitor our movements?

Best place to buy a Bearded Dragon?

best baby monitor to buy 2013 image

Samantha

I've always been interested in buying a Bearded Dragon ever since my friend from long ago had one and allowed me to hold him. I fell in love! In the past I have bought snakes from Petco and a Reptile Store, but I have heard that the best place to buy a reptile is at a reptile show/expo. I heard their reptiles are healthier and that there is a better selection of the reptiles. Is this true? I definitely don't want to buy an unhealthy Bearded Dragon, and I don't want to pay an insane amount for it.

I live in Tulsa, Oklahoma and I believe we have a Reptile Show/Expo a few times a year. So, my main questions are: Where are best places to buy a reptile? What is the typical cost for a baby Bearded Dragon? Thank you.

Answer
We carry them on our website, and visit reptile shows all over the country every year.

Here is a link to check out the beardies we have in stock and to get an idea on price:

Turtle Beach Tango Issue with bluetooth?

Q.

sooo, early this year i bought the Tangos because my old headset was destroyed by my own stupidity.... anyway, now whenever I try to talk in them it you can barely understand me because it comes out in a static sort of sound. The Tangos are new (as i bought them, so 3-5 months old), they've always have worked before today, I have tried "turning it on and off again", I looked at the TB website but their were no listings for this problem, the audio for games and such works fine, I can hear people, I tried to get dust out of the detachable mic part, I think somethings broken but I don't know what part specifically to replace. I figure/hope that the local community here that has a turtle beach or something knows. no other problems, just static when ever my bluetooth is on for it. NOTE: it might have something to due with internet connection as that seems to be going weird lately, due to too many devices on the internet at one time.

Answer
Same here; got tired of the blue masking tape holding my DPX-21's together. The EFT's are a major league upgrade and world of difference.

First, don't discount the obvious; make sure your Chat button settings are on Chat 1 or Chat Main (left earpiece). If that's good, then try flashing the firmware with the latest version (even if you're using the current one). If you've never updated, now's the time.

Make sure the cables on the transmitter are secured properly also.

The mikes on the EFT's are pretty hard to screw up, so I'd be looking at a firmware, software, or setting fix. If you haven't yet downloaded the firmware update, here's what you need to do:

1. Create a TB Community account:

http://www.turtlebeach.com/community/preset-community

2. Download and install the Tango Advanced Sound Editor and User Guide:

http://www.turtlebeach.com/assets/presets/tools/ASE_20130314.zip

http://www.turtlebeach.com/assets/presets/tools/ASE_UserGuide_2013_FINAL.pdf

3. Once installed, connect your EFT headset using the USB data cable (NOT the long power cable; they're marked), then start up the ASE program.

4. Click the “Check for Firmware Updates” button and let it do its thing. The procedure is on page 6 of the ASE user guide.

Lastly, you can't rule out RF interference either. Make sure you haven't added any new electronics near the transmitter unit that can cause RFI; new cordless phone base, microwave (if you're a hardcore gamer), baby monitor, etc. Even a new Router; if you've installed a new Router or bridge, you may need to adjust the Channel frequency band to a higher offset frequency above 2.4ghz, which is what the BT frequency is. Remember, anything that can generate RFI will interfere with a BT transmission.

Worst case, call TB support - they're pretty good about taking care of customers who buy their high-end units. Did you get the freebie TB earbuds a couple of months ago as a bonus?

I have a baby monitor system and the camera plugs into the wall. I want to hook it up to batteries so that it is wireless. The input of the a/c adapter for the camera is 120VAC and the output is 12VDC. Would it work if i cut the 2 wires going to the black a/c adapter box thing, put one wire on the end of 8 connected AA batteries and the other wire on the other end of the 8 connected AA batteries?

Answer
yes you can... but.....

You need to know how much current the camera uses, this will tell you if you can use AA batteries of if you need D batteries.

The wall wart has a positive and a negative. You can cut the wire away from the wall wart and connect it to a battery box.

You can buy the battery box from:

www.parts-express.com

What is the best hospital for giving birth in Queens/Brooklyn/Long Island, NY?

marycotter

What is important to me is having the ability to have a natural birth without the doctors/nurses pushing for meds or unnecessary c-section. Would love if they offered midwives..

Answer
Get a midwife, trust me if you want control of your birth and want it to be natural, get a midwife and do it at home. I had a nurse-midwife in hospital and it was awful. She made an appearance four times, the last time I ever saw her she caught the baby and then left. It was as bad as having a doctor, don't count on the nurses to help you, they are just there to monitor the baby's heart rate for liability issues (otherwise they would use a hand-held Doppler but wait that doesn't record the readings - see liability issues). I even had to argue with the nurses about wearing my own nightgown! The day of your labor and birth belong at home as long as your pregnancy is low risk. I had a low risk, non-medicated, completely natural labor and birth and yet I was traumatized by it because I was in a hospital, I had a midwife that was never there and I had to depend more on my mother-in-law than anyone there at the hospital. Please get a midwife and do it at home, you'll be much more comfortable there.

Get, beg, buy, steal or borrow one of these books. Even if you choose a hospital birth these books are still great reads. It shows birth as a positive, beautiful and empowering experience.

Ina May's Guide to Childbirth: Discover the Proven Wisdom That Has Guided Thousands of Women Through Childbirth With More Confidence, Less Pain, and Little or No Medical Intervention by Ina May Gaskin.

Spiritual Midwifery, 4th Edition: The classic book on home birth! The first section details the experiences of parents and midwives during the birth experience. The second section is a technical manual for midwives, nurses, and doctors. Includes information on prenatal care and nutrition, labor, delivery-techniques, care of the new baby, and breast-feeding. Very informative stuff.

Consider giving birth upright so that gravity helps instead of having to push a baby up hill out of you (such as giving birth laying flat on your back) Even if you are in a hospital request a squat bar, squatting also allows your pelvic outlet to increase that crucial 1/2 - 1 inch. http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.birthdiaries.com/diary/birth061/birth061.21.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.birthdiaries.com/diary/birth061/&usg=__FjFAA9LxTJZzjljpAMCohkNA1Wo=&h=240&w=320&sz=19&hl=en&start=3&tbnid=pGQ7e9fyVyMezM:&tbnh=89&tbnw=118&prev=/images%3Fq%3D%2522squat%2Bbar%2522%2Bbirth%26gbv%3D2%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff

Also check into The Business of Being Born - ti's a great documentary.
While the United States has perhaps the most advanced health care system in the world, it also has the second-highest infant mortality rate of any industrialized nation, and many have begun to question conventional wisdom regarding the way obstetricians deal with childbirth. While midwives preside over the majority of births in Europe and Japan, fewer than ten percent of American mothers employ them, despite their proven record of care and success. How do American doctors make their choices regarding the way their patients give birth, and who is intended to benefit? Director Abby Epstein and producer Ricki Lake offer a probing look at childbirth in America in the documentary The Business of Being Born, which explores the history of obstetrics, the history and function of Midwives, and how many common medical practices may be doing new mothers more harm than good.
