Baby monitor for ipad?

N

I am looking for a baby monitor camera to use on my ipad. The one I have now uses a monitor screen but my house is too big and it is now out of range. I want a monitor to use with wifi so I can see my baby on my ipad. I would like one with the same features as my current one. One that pans, and I can talk back to the baby when shes crying. I've found one so far, (Motorola Blink1 Wi-Fi Video Camera for Remote Viewing with iPhone and Android Smartphones and Tablets ) but looking for other options and personal feedback. Thanks!

Answer
I have Foscam ip camera at home and still using it after a year. Initial setup wasn't easy, but when you're done with setup it works properly. Here you can find more info on baby monitors / cameras : http://babyneedslist.com/health-and-safety-products-baby-monitors/

Poll: Do you think that two-month-olds should have iPhones?

Q. Or would it be better for them to have an Android?

Answer
I say a baby monitor will be much better

Built new desktop, need wireless?

Tigger

Hi guys. I built a new desktop, and now I need internet. I can't use wired connection for reasons. Right now I'm using a TEW-645UB Trendnet adapter. It works but it only picks up a few bars, and it's laggy in game. I'm using my desktop for gaming.
Is there a better adapter out there?

Answer
That Trednet model is a decent High Power Wireless N Adapter with full backwards support for IEEE 802.11b/g, and support for latest IEEE 802.11n Draft standard. It is likely that the position of the router is causing thee problem.

I would certainly try and improve things by repositioning the router [I have suggested several things below] before rushing out to buy a new adapter that may or may not improve your signal.

It would obviously have helped if you had given details on the make and model of the router and whether it supports draft n wifi standard and if it has "Dual Band" support for broadcasting simultaneously on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequency bands.

There are several things you can do do try and boost signal strength; To start with the basic rule is to position the router as high as possible and there are as few walls as possible between it and the PC.

Things you can do to improve signal strength

1] Try changing the broadcast channel from the wireless setup interface for your router/modem.You can normally access this by typing "http://192.168.0.1/" into your browsers search bar and then look for the wireless settings menu.
You don't say if your router can use the 5GHz frequency or just the 2.4GHz. The best channels in the 2.5GHz spectrum are 1,6, 11, or 13 as they have less overlap with the other channels.

There is a useful article here about how to get the best performance by selecting the best channel.: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/21132/chaâ¦

If you have an android smarthphone, or a friend does, then install the Wifi Analyzer app free from android market and use it to scan for the best channel and change your routers broadcast channel accordingly. This app will also show you all the wifi signals in range that your neighbours are using, so you can select a different channel to them, making a stronger signal for you. https://market.android.com/details?id=coâ¦

2] You can use a tool like Nirsofts totally free WirelessNet View to look at all the local wireless signals that are within range and may be competing with your own router and interfering with reception. from here: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wireless_neâ¦

3] You can buy a Wi-Fi booster like D-Link 645 Smartbeam, here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/D-Link-DIR-645-Wâ¦
Devices such as these can actually boost the wifi signal by using multiple beams that bounce of the walls and are intelligently directed toward whatever device [smarhphone, laptop, tablet] you are using on wifi.

4] If your using the 2.4GHz frequency and not the 5GHz then other devices that use this frequency band can also interfere with your reception [eg baby monitors and microwave ovens use 2.4GHz]. Try and make sure that none of these devices are situated between your router and your PC

Why is my internet so much slower on my laptop?

Danny G

I'm with virgin, both my computer & my laptop are connected to my via wireless connection. But my laptop gets but a small fraction of the speed my computer does.

Any ideas on how to sort this out?

Answer
I assume that although you say both the laptop and desktop use a wifi connection that they are not situated in the same place. It is likely that the signal strength will vary in different positions in your house. If the router supports the latest draft n wifi standards and so does the wifi adapter in your desktop then check that your laptops adapted supports 8011n too. If it only supports earlier wifi standards like 8011.g then this is much slower and the reason for the difference.

If the wifi chip in the laptop also supports the 8011n wifi standard then there are several things that can affect wifi signal and things you can do to try and improve things

To start with the basic rule is to position the router as high and as centrally as possible in your house.

Try and make sure that none of these devices are situated between your router and your wifi receiver eg laptop, tablet, smarthphone etc

what's the best type of baby monitor?

penmaster

we're having our first baby and we're not sure of all the listening monitors out there, which one is best?

Answer
From my ConsumerReports.Org subscriptions:

Baby monitors
Baby monitors are an extra set of ears--and, in some cases, eyes--that allow you to keep tabs on your sleeping baby. There are two basic types: audio and video/audio. Both operate within a selected radio frequency band to send sound from the babyâs room to a receiver. Each monitor consists of a transmitter (child unit) and one or more receivers (parent units). Video/audio monitors have a small wall-mounted or tabletop camera to transmit images to a video monitor.

A baby monitorâs challenge is to transmit recognizable sound (and/or images) over a distance with minimal interference--static, buzzing, or irritating noise--from other electronic products and transmitters, including cordless phones that share the same frequency bands, cellular phones, appliances, and even fluorescent lights. Interference can also be hearing someone elseâs conversation, which makes it difficult, if not impossible, to decipher the sounds coming from your monitor. Interference can also mean fuzzy reception in video monitors. Overall, interference is probably the biggest complaint parents have about baby monitors.

SHOPPING SECRETS

Feel free to skip this purchase. Some parents are reassured by the constant surveillance of a babyâs every whimper and movement. Others find it nerve-racking and feel like they have to be hypervigilant. Decide which category youâre in before you go shopping. A monitor isnât a must-have. If you live in a small house or apartment or want a break when your baby is sleeping--which is legitimate--itâs OK not to have one.

Consider your home and lifestyle. You may appreciate a monitor with both sound and lights, so you can âseeâ your babyâs cries. The louder he cries, the more lights light up. If youâll be taking business calls during naptime, for example, it can be helpful to turn the sound down low and rely on the lights. A video monitor can serve the same purpose, though we believe an audio monitor with lights can suffice. Similarly, if you live in a large house, you may want a monitor with two receivers rather than just one. In general, look for monitors with features that make it easy to move about, such as a compact parent unit that clips onto your belt. Try it on before buying, if possible; antennas have been known to poke the wearer.

Factor in your phone. To minimize the possibility of interference, choose a baby monitor that operates on a different frequency band from other wireless products in your home. A 2.4GHz cordless phone and a 2.4GHz monitor can interfere with each other. The 2.4GHz frequency band is widely used for cordless phones.

Consider digital if you have nearby neighbors with babies. If you want to be sure the sounds transmitted by your monitor are heard only by you and not by neighbors who might have a similar model (or a cordless phone using the same frequency band), go with a digital monitor, not an analog one. This will also ensure that the sounds you hear are coming from your baby and not the neighborâs. Analog monitors operate on a particular frequency band, much like a radio, sending signals from monitor to receiver in a straight shot. Digital monitors, on the other hand, encode the signal as it travels between the monitor and the receiver, making it nearly impossible for the sounds to be heard by others, and reduces the possibility of running into interference from other electronic devices. (Learn more about wireless interference.)

Learn the return policy. Before you buy or register for any wireless product, such as a baby monitor, be sure the store will let you return or exchange it, in case you canât get rid of interference problems. If you receive a monitor as a baby shower gift and know where it was purchased, try it before the retailerâs return period (usually 30 days) runs out.

WHATâS AVAILABLE

The major brands of baby monitors, in alphabetical order, are: Evenflo (www.evenflo.com), Fisher-Price (www.fisher-price.com), Graco (www.gracobaby.com), Mobicam (www.getmobi.com), Philips (www.hearmybaby.com), Safety 1st (www.safety1st.com), Sony (www.sony.com), Summer Infant (www.summerinfant.com), The First Years (www.thefirstyears.com), and Unisar BébéSounds (www.bebesounds.com). Prices range from $15 to $200 for audio monitors, $100 to $200 for audio/video monitors. The higher the price, the more features and frills.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Among the models we tested, the digital baby monitors are top-rated. Short of DECT technology, thereâs no guarantee against interference with either digital or analog monitors, although digital monitors are less susceptible and more private. One digital model in particular, the Philips SCD 589, is loaded with features, and since it operates in the fairly lightly used, for now, 1.9GHZ frequency band, itâs unlikely to pick up interference. However, at $200, itâs pricey. (See our full report on this model.)

If you anticipate interference and want to spend less than $200, buy a less-pricey digital model thatâs not in the same frequency band as other wireless products in your home, and consider models with more than two channels. The other digital monitors we tested were very good: The Graco iMonitor ($90) has two parent units; a similar version with one parent unit is available for $60. The Summer Infant Secure Sounds ($50) is a good choice for privacy, though, like the Graco iMonitor, it has fewer frills than the Philips SCD 589. See our full monitor Ratings (available to
subscribers
) for details.

We suggest avoiding the Evenflo WhisperConnect Sensa ($50). It has a Pet Sensor, which is designed to alert you to any unusual movement around your babyâs crib--a cat or other pet climbed in, say. That feature worked well, but you can easily keep pets away from the crib by closing the door to your babyâs room. In addition, we found that one of the three samples we tested had an annoying problem: The âout of rangeâ alarm would go off at random. This happened over and over again with that particular sample, and once or twice with one of the other two samples we tested.

The audio/video monitors we tested have small color screens, and unlike earlier models, reasonably good pictures. However, we found them to be susceptible to interference, particularly from microwave ovens in use. Some models, such as the MobiCam ($190), let you tape to a VCR or watch your monitor on the television set. But overall, we donât see much need for a video baby monitor.

Highest rated one was the Philips Digital SCD 589 for 200$, the next one right after that was the The First Years Digital for 50$.

Best Baby Monitor?

I am researching monitors. I am looking for one with a camera, but I know some of them work better than others. Any suggestions on which one gives the best picture? Which one has less static? I've heard so many different reviews. I found one that I really like....

http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2943603&fromRegistryNumber=44067222&product_skn=760504

But the price is a bit high. I am also looking for 1 that has the option to add a 2nd camera. I have a 3 year old daughter also, and it would be nice to be able to watch her too.

Answer
We own this camera and overall LOVE it. We really like the fact that the screen is large. We tend to get a clear picture although sometimes there is some flickering. We remedy this by just moving it a little bit. It does not pose much of a nuisance for us. We can also move it around the house and not worry about it sucking up a ton of batteries (this was a major issue with our previous monitor - it just gobbled up batteries). We have never gotten images of other people. No issue there.

Warning though: It does not have the best audio. The lowest setting is somewhat loud for my tastes. However, we did not care about the audio as we can hear our baby cry just fine. Also, there are also only two channels with this monitor so you don't have a lot of room to search for a better connection.

If you want great audio to go with the screen, I would recommend looking into some monitors with small screens. The only downside to those is the battery issue.

On a final note, I would absolutely recommend investing in a video monitor. We used to have a regular audio monitor but kept rushing in every time we heard the baby cry. Unfortunately, many times she was just yelling in her sleep and we were the ones waking her up. The video monitor allows us to see if she is really awake or just in transition sleep. Lately, she has been rolling over in her sleep and it allows me to keep track of her. Great purchase!

Baby monitor with camera?

Q. I'm having my first child in December and my mom and I are looking at baby monitors and we found on that had a camera and shows you a live image of the baby. My mom was pretty impressed by this as they weren't around when I was a baby. But they are outrageously priced! I think she wants to get one for me anyway, as this is her first grandchild and my mom's the type to spend way too much. So I was wondering does anyone else have these? Worth the price? Are they any good?

Answer
I actually did this, but I used a wireless ip camera. When my son was 9 months old we had to move from a condo to an apartment with no washer/dryer hookup. So I had to leave the apartment to do the laundry a couple doors down and needed a way to see what my son was up to in between loads. I agree that the video monitor setups are very steep. And something worth noting is that every single one I've seen on shelves is not a secured network. So that video signal is open for others to view nearby. I use(d) a dlink IP cam that is networked securely to my home wireless network and accessible via smartphone. It cost about 30 bucks and 15 minutes of setup and I was up and going. I've had this setup for almost 3 years now and it's been helpful. I don't think I've had any memorable absences, but it's a nice piece of mind to make sure my son was sleeping safely when I had to leave the apartment for a moment.

I'm not sure which baby monitor to get? First time mum and I worry a lot, please help!?

I'm due in October and am just looking for a baby monitor. I have read that the Tommee Tippee and Angelcare (not sure which models) both with sensor pads, and the BT 150 are good. I'm not sure about the sensor pads, I have heard they give a lot of false alarms, plus I don't want to be too paranoid. I know they can be useful for premature babies or those with health conditions, but what about full term healthy babies, is there any need?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer
If you are already a worrier the more things your monitor "checks", the more things you're going to worry about. When the breathing monitor isn't going off you'll wonder if it's really working, with video you'll spend your day watching the monitor.

I would suggest a good quality audio monitor with 2 receivers. What will work best for you depends on where you live, in an apartment complex, a house, near an airport...etc.

If you don't have to worry about interference then a model like the Fisher Price "Lights and Sounds" is a great choice. Always rated highly and about $40. It's the model I've used for over 3 years with no problems. If intereference could be a problem, skip the 900 MHz models and go with one in the 2.45 a 2.54 GHz range. The prices are almost the same, and with the 2.xx GHz models you're pretty much guaranteed no interference.

A couple of good choices in that range are the First Years "True Choice digital monitor" ($80), and the Graco "I-vibe" ($90). Both have 2 receivers so you can leave one in your bedroom, and have one to carry around.

Hope this helps,

Alan

Are plain, old baby monitors adequate?

Mariposa

I'm being a bit proactive and have decided to educate myself on all these baby gadgets. I had a pregnancy that ended in a miscarriage, so even though I was only pregnant a short time, I remember how stressed I was trying to figure out all of this stuff.
So my question is... I thought baby monitors were a dime a dozen. Never knew there were motion sensors, 49 mhz and 900 mhz, video, laptop viewable, etc etc etc. The reviews saying how some mother's felt their babies lives were saved by the motion sensors got me into "paranoid-mommy-to-be" mode. When I was little, everyone had those Graco, lights when the baby makes noise versions. Does anyone find that these are perfectly adequate for their babies, or are the motion sensors/video models really a better choice? Keeping in mind that I'm trying to restrain myself from one day spending thousands of dollars on things a baby will use for a year. :)

Thank you!

Answer
I didn't use one - we live in an apartment, were never going to be that far from the baby, I'm skeptical about gagetry, and I had a sixth sense that alerted me whenever my little one had a hiccup in the next room.

If I'd had a big house I might have gotten a simple monitor, but I think a lot of these things are designed to separate you from your wallet ...and will surely rob you of more sleep than you can afford in general.

Just my $.02 - and I know how it feels to be prenatally paranoid. I'm sure I had plenty of my own issues although this wasn't one of mine. :)

what is the best baby monitor to buy?

RyanA

I don't care about price. We would like one with video and sound...unless the video is of poor quality.
Thanks!

Answer
Although it does not have video, the Angelcare monitor is what I used for both my children.

http://www.angelcare-monitor.com/english/hispeed/angelcare.html

It has a movement monitor that you slip under the mattress and sound monitor combined that is ULTRAsensitive. I was always scared that my babies would stop breathing during the night. I felt it was better than a video monitor since you can't sit in front of the video monitor 24/7, (and you certainly can't watch it while YOU are asleep,) but you will certainly hear the alarm on this monitor! Very reliable, gave me peace of mind and overall one of the best monitors I've ever owned.

Any mommies use the Angelcare motion sensor baby monitor?

Sweetpea h

Its a baby monitor with a motion sensor in the crib to tell you if your baby stops breathing. I think this is a great idea, but its pricey. has anyone used it? is it worth the money?

http://www.angelcare-monitor.com/United-States/en/home

Answer
I have one. They are not bad but I would also look into the Snuza monitor. It is the same amount of money but since it clips onto the diaper it is more portable. Also, I have had fewer false alarms with it. I hope this helps!

Can't hear the baby at night?

ItzMe

I feel horrible. I am a stay at home mom. Our daughter recently got her 4 month set of shots and has been a bit cranky. She is breastfed and will fall asleep on my breast then we'll take her to her crib. For the last two nights I didn't hear my daughter cry and my husband got up. I feel so bad! He works in the morning and I don't and I think I should be the one waking up but I can't hear. I heard him later with her and then I breastfed her and she fell asleep. I can't help but to feel horrible! PLS Help! Any moms went through the same thing? Any suggestions?

Answer
it happens to the best of us - i have an 8month old who still wakes up multiple times at night. maybe y our husband didn't mind getting up with her. you can either tell him to wake u up next time so he can sleep, get a monitor and turn it up all the way, or sleep in her room/ have her sleep in your room. hopefully she starts feeling better soon! good luck!

What are the "Baby Essentials" for the first few months of life?

Sophia's M

My husband and I are having our baby next month.
There are so many things that we might like and want..But being first times parents, What do we really need and what should we wait on or avoid all together.

So far we only have a bassinet, tons of clothing a carset that snaps into a Stroller frame.
We have her nursery painted but need to get furniture. We have been waiting on bigger stuff to see what were getting at our shower..But also we don't see the need to do it now when she will sleep in our room for a few months.

Answer
I will give you two lists. The what you need and don't as far as furniture and my basic other list. Let me start by saying that I wanted the perfect nursery with a matching set of furniture. After looking at the prices I changed my mind. My furniture doesn't match, but my nursery is still cute and functional. I would recomend the book baby bargains you can get it at half.com from $0.75 to $12. I used it to buy everything. It tells you the best brands, prices, ratings, and safety for everything.

You do not need a changing table. Try to only get things that you can use as the baby gets older and for other children. We got a 3 drawer dresser with a 2 shelf cabinet on it. It is long and low. We used the top for the changing area. I think we got it at Walmart for around $100. Get a changing pad and 2 or 3 changing pad covers. I also have a changing organizer that hangs on the wall to hold diapers, wipes, etc.

I have a rocking chair that was also under $100. We got a Graco-Lauren 4 in 1 crib. It is one of the safest cribs and only costs $140 at walmart. I also have a Rubbermaid set of drawers for all the small stuff.

I used a Graco pack n' play playpen with the bassinet and changing area on top of it for the first 3 months. We didn't even use our nursery for anything more than a closet that whole time. It sounds like you really have just about everything you will need at first.

Here is my layette list:
The Boppy for breastfeeding, this was my best friend, take it to the hospital with you. I have multiples of some things because they will get pooped and puked on.

5 receiving blankets.
2 or 3 bigger baby blankets
6 long sleeved onesies
6 short sleeved onesies
3 sleepers
1 or 2 bag sleepers
3 newborn hats
5 pairs of socks
1 pair of gloves, to keep baby from scratching
baby washcloths
baby bath soap
baby lotion, don't use baby oil it will dry them out worse
a carseat cover
1 package cloth diapers to use as burp rags
2 packages of disposable diapers
baby wipes
non-talc baby powder
diaper rash cream
baby finger nail clippers
nose bulb
2 pacifiers
a package of bottles in case breastfeeding doesn't work out
breast pump, even a hand pump, that's all I ever used
breast milk bags
diaper pail
a baby swing would be nice but I survived without one
bouncy chair, great for putting baby in while you clean house or take a shower.
2 or 3 sheets for the bassinet
some sort of rocking chair is nice but you don't have to have one

You won't need these right away if baby is sleeping in your room
2 or 3 sheets for crib
crib mattress
waterproof mattress pad
baby monitor
changing pad
2 or 3 changing pad covers

Baby's hospital bag.
2 or 3 outfits
a going home outfit
a few blankets
a pacifier

Honestly that's about it. I could probably think of more if I tried but like I said you really only need the basics, not even everything I mentioned. Get all the rest you can, let yourself heal and recover after giving birth, don't be afraid to ask for help, and take lots of pictures. Good luck.

I cant believe it, they MISSED something on my ultrasound! shallow amniotic fluid? can someone help?

Bogan Mum

Ok, il give the scenario quickly. 37 weeks, fundal height (tummy measurement) is only at 34weeks and baby is measuring at 34-35 weeks on ultrasound and her measurements are well below average and only just above the 5% emergency line, her weight has been guessed around 4lb 2oz. if you want the full picture go to my questions and read the one where it says "feel like they arent doing enough to find out whats wrong with my baby". please dont question my due dates or shyt like that as its all explained in the question i said.

Went to hospital today to get monitored and for a better scan to check the amniotic fluid levels and to make sure blood is getting to the baby. They SAID everything was fine and to come back in 2 weeks for another scan and if she hasnt grown then they will induce me then.

However, just got a call from my midwife (its 9.15pm) saying that they (hospital) were reviewing my notes and pictures from ultrasound and noticed that my pools of fluid were too low for 37 weeks?

Now what does that mean? I took a couple of guesses. Does it mean that im further on than they think? Because going by my period my due date would be the 9th november (making me 39 weeks on monday) but at my 6 week scan they put me back to the 18th november (making me 37 weeks 2 days today). Or does it mean that i could be leaking amniotic fluid and not noticing?

Honestly i wish they would just get her out of me so i can stop worrying. Im so fcuked off, honestly!

Answer
Low amniotic fluid can be caused by a few things. Problems with the placenta, leaking or ruptures with the membrane, post date pregnancy (which you don't have since you're early, not over due), dehydration, hypertension, preeclampsia, diabetes and can also be caused by a birth defect with the baby if the kidneys are not developed properly since the amniotic fluid is made up of her urine at this point.

At this point, your best option would be to have your baby delivered unless they give you options on how to raise the level of fluids.

If I were you, I'd go through with your delivery and if you were planning on having more children, switch to an OB (I didn't notice if you were in the UK/Australia or not) or switch midwife since your midwife has left you hanging with a diagnosis that to us can sound like the end of the world without a resolution or explanation as to what's going on.

Please call your midwife and have her explain all of it to you until you are fully satisfied with her explanation and then ask her what the next course of action is until you are satisfied with her answer.

Building a Computer...Can you help me!?!?

EB1285

Ok so i am currently running a Pentium 4 dell factory 8300 desktop computer.
http://reviews.zdnet.co.uk/hardware/desktops/0,1000000968,10004197,00.htm I updated the graphics card last year to a very nice ATI card, and i also added another 512 stick of Ram. Everything is fine on it, but i just want more speed/power/reliability. So i am wanting to build myself a new computer and purchase the parts off of new egg. My question is what all do I need to buy, and what can i steal from my old comp?

I figure the new Core Duo processor is a must. (2.0 GHZ)
I also am going to get a new tower. (This will come with a power supply).
I will steal my old graphics/video card as well as mouse, keyboard, speakers, and monitors.
Do I need to buy a CD-Rom, CD-RW, CD-DVD or can i steal these too?
Motherboard? If so how much memory usage do i need for serious gaming?
Sound card, can i steal this from the Dell?
Ram, I currently have a gig of ram in the other comp, can i steal these too?

Answer
ok well first. the core duo is nice but it will not work on your current mobo. the core duo is a lga type (which has not pins)
so you will need a new mobo. next yes you can use your optical drives(dvd cd)
you will probably need to use different memeory as well. most mobos use ddr2 which is much faster. i would go with at least 2gigs of this.
next get a seriousl graphics card with at least 256 and either agp2 or a pci express. i recomend either stealth with a radeon chipset or a realy nice nividia card.

also not to knock new egg but you might want to try global first they tend to have a little better slection on cases and on prices they are alot lower than most places.

one last thing when you get your new mobo, tower and stuff make sure you get at least 2 case fans. one push back and one pull in front to keep this monster cool. eithr that or do what i did and put yourself togethr a system with these parts.

intell core duo extreme
3 gig of ddr2
2tb hardrive(sata)
stealth graphics card with radeon 9800 running 512mb pci express
volcano temp and tach case fans
water cooler
850 watt power supply
asus motherboard (ifogot the number)
a 37" lcd screen
wireless mouse and kb
linksys 2.4 ghz wireless dsl setup

this baby kicks a>>
good luck dude
let me know how it goes ok. and hey dont burn down the house doin it like i almost did with my first build 10 years ago.lol

help my newborn has an apnea monitor?

My daughter is 10 days old and on an apnea monitor. She has only been home for three days, she was born at 36 wks and spent the first week in a children's hospital because she inhaled fluid during delivery. There were no problems caused by this she was just on an antibiotic for seven days then sent home. She is on the monitor because in 2002 I had a little boy that passed away in his sleep when he was two months old. I am sure the monitor is the best thing for her and it does easy my mind. However, the monitor has gone off several times since we have been home. She seems to be fine every time it goes off. I called her nurse and he said it sometimes does just go off. We have only been home for three days and I'd say it went off about 20 times since we brought her home. It drives me crazy, my heart stops every time I hear it go off. Her father and I are so afraid to leave her side. I'm afraid to be home alone with her because I just panic when I hear it. Her father is calmer than I am and just goes over to her and picks her up and makes sure she is ok. I always want to run to the phone and call someone. I am so afraid she will be unresponsive every time I hear it. Does anyone else have a newborn on an apnea monitor that goes off all the time? And how do you deal with it? How long do they usually keep newborns on the monitors? I know its whats best for her and I'd be going even crazier if she didnt have it. I am just so afraid of her and the monitor right now and she has only had it for three days I know we still have a long way to go.

Answer
My daughter (3rd child) has had her apnea monitor for 20 months now. We are just about to give it up. What brand is yours? We use the Babysense ll. The monitor we use does go off from time to time, and we do the following checklist:

1. Check all connections. Sometimes if the cords aren't plugged into the alarm it will go off continuously because the alarm box is not recieving any electronic signals.

2. Check baby has not rolled off off sensor pads. (Obviously in your case this is not an issue)

3. Check there are the required amount of sensor pads being used at a time. For a newborn you use one. For an older baby who moves around (rolls/crawls etc) use two. That way if they roll off of one it won't go off.

4. Check batteries. Make sure you use alkaline batteries.

5. Check the sensor pad is positioned on a flat surface.

I'm not sure in your case, but my alarm also goes off if the breathing rate drops below a certain rate, and also obviously if the alarm box recieves no movement signals

I have noticed if I have a fan on in the room the monitor picks that up as movement, so when I pick the baby OUT of her cot the alarm WONT sound. Check that aswell if you have a fan or airconditioner in your room. To test this, turn your fan/airconditioner on without the baby in the cot. If the alarm does not sound it is picking up on the air flow as 'movement'.

The fact your baby is so young may mean she has an errattic breathing pattern. If that is the case it should get better over time. In the meantime, to be thorough, document times and dates of the alarms, and also how your baby reacted to you picking her up etc and present to your peadiatrician.Thats what I had to do. They will not give a sleep study here in Australia without that. My 20mth old has a sleep condition (found through using the monitor) that was only jusyt diagnosed. I am so glad I brought the alarm.. who knows.,.

Good luck, if you have any questions feel free to ask. The first thing I did before disturbing my baby's sleep and turning off the alarm was to check the colour of her lips and nose. If they look normal she is more than likely OK :)

ANYONE USE THIS FOR THEIR baby? i hear its good?

its suppose to beep if your baby doesnt move for 20 seconds or more? i hear it gives peace of mind

Answer
My sister-in-law had one.
Very good if you are nervous, it goes off if baby has not took a breath for 20 secs not moved for 20 secs. My niece had stopped breathing twice when she was 4 days old and then at 3 weeks old due to a cold! My sister was a complete mess cos she was so frightened to put her down so the health visitor got her one on loan. She had a similar one for every child she had after that, good job really, it saved my nephew when he was 7 weeks old as he stopped breathing.
I am, thankfully, never experienced it but if i did, i know i would buy one! Reagrdless how much it cost if it saved my baby. (or my mental state)
When baby is old enough to move the chance of cot death is greatly reduced anyway. It still happens, dont get me wrong but most cot death tends to happen in very small babies, the majority of.

Thanks!

Early Warning Signs??

Kenai

Are there any early warning signs that a woman will be going into labor soon?? (other than her water breaking and the bloody show thing).
I have been leaking down there for the past 2 days.... could that be my water?

Answer
I'm 39 weeks, and my nurse told me that diarrhea and flu-like body aches could be symptoms, just as much as the bloody show of the mucous plug and increased discharge as well as your water breaking. If you have any concerns about creepy aches and pains, just go to the hospital. The worst thing they'll do is monitor you for about an hour then send you home, and there's nothing to be embarrased about. Trust me, I went a week ago just because I was cramping really bad and got scared. I felt like a geek, but at least I know now that me and my baby are okay. This is my first child, so I think I'm just as clueless as you are (no offense), my main objective is to be patient, I will KNOW when I'm in labor and so will you! GOOD LUCK!

Where can I get a graphics tablet?

English Na

I need, well want, a graphics tablet, around A4 in size, and above all it needs to be cheap.
Does anyone know where I could get one in the UK?

Answer
I know where you can get a Really Decent one, for a nominal price. They should ship to the UK.
http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=WP4030&cat=MOU

You may think, "It's too cheap to be any good. It must be a toy."

Nope!
1.512 levels of pressure sensitivity for the pen.
2.Tablet 'Hotspots', offer shortcuts to programs and menu commands.
3.Pen scroll function to browse documents and web pages

Pen is cordless. Contains a battery. One AAA battery. All kinds of software comes with it. (Pen Commander, Annotate for Word, PenSigner, Annotate All, PenMail, XP handwriting recognition support in Microsoft Word and Outlook, Adobe Photoshop CS (Trial), Corel Painter IX (Trial) [Probably newer versions of Adobe and Corel, now]

(Just reading off of the box, of mine)

I have had only ONE problem with it so far.

IT"S TOO INTRICATE!!
I'm so spoiled, (Or used to), with just using my mouse cursor for my Photoshop, that this digital tablet just draws TOO fine!
I can draw hairs on the human body, and make them look real!

I mean you can get down to ONE pixel!
This is for digital image editing. If you're going to draw freehand, this baby will do that easily. There's so many features, it's going to take me a while to use them with ease!

I wanted to check out a digital graphics tablet, for my Photoshop. I thought, hey, this isn't too expensive to see if I want a better one.

It works as good as the expensive ones!

All you need is a 3 inch by 4 inch space on the tablet. Your monitor is your drawing board.

Just my 2cent's.

How do I connect to a Modem that is in another room?

Mista J

I have a PC that did not come with any wireless abilities. I bought a wireless adapter so that i can connect to the internet but i feel as if its running out of days and that i would be much better off just having a cable running from the modem directly, but its in another room. Like on the other side of the house. I have a laptop that doesn't really get into as much problems with the connection as my PC does which makes me think its the adapter. Also I found out thtat the one PC that is connected directly to the modem gets great internet. How can i get better internet without having to change much. Is it my possible outdated adapter? How could I resolve this.
Some of these observations may be obvious and my issue might be minor to some but i could use some help and advice.
Thanks for your time :]

Answer
To answer your titled question first. Apart from wifi you can still connect via hard wired ethernet cable if the router/modem is an another room, if you don't mind the cable clutter. You can buy 25metre even 30metre plus ethernet cables on amazon for under £10.

As regards, problems with wifi reception and reduced network speeds there are several things you can do to try and improve performance. You don't give any details on your hardware or network configuration, so general advice will have to do:

To start with the basic rule is to position the router/modem as high and as centrally as possible in your house.

This app will aslo show you all the wifi signals in range that your neighbours are using, so you can select a different channel to them, making a stronger signal for you. https://market.android.com/details?id=coâ¦

4] If your using the 2.4GHz frequency and not the 5GHz then other devices that use this frequency band can alsso interfere with your reception [eg baby monitors and microwave ovens use 2.4GHz]. Try and make sure that none of these devices are situated between your router and your wifi receiver eg laptop, tablet, smarthphone etc

Dwarf Savannah Monitor!?

BlueTongue

I have the Monitor, 7.5".. and you'll never guess 8 months old. I am experienced with keeping monitors/tegus/blue-tongues.. and this one is SO SMALL. I feed it till it gets full, his basking temperature is at around 100 degress, and has all the correct UV.. I seen on the internet where their Bosc is not growing. People blame them for not caring for it properly, which may be the case, but not in this case. Do you guys think Bosc can have runts? I have never seen this done before. Experienced Bosc Monitor owners answer only, please. No need in smart ass answers.

Baby's sleeping positions...?

For the past few weeks ive been having disturbed sleep due to worry of my 6 month old baby girl.

As she gets into the most awkward positions in her sleep and it is terrifying me.

She is choosing her tummy a lot which i dont really like, but if i move her she gets in an even more awkward position even on her tummy with hands tucked under her tummy.

Its getting to a point where I'm constantly waking up to check on her and I'm actually feeling safer with her in bed with me so i can keep her still.

Any advice please?

Also is it really safe now that she is on her tummy?

(She has is able to roll onto tummy and back again for quite some time )

Answer
My daughter has been the same since around 6mos.

She flips on her tummy, hands under her belly, knees bent, bum in the air.

When she started doing it, I like you, was worried and couldnt sleep. But I realised I was fighting a losing battle. I even wasted my money on a sleep positioner which on the 1st night of using - she wriggled out of.

What sort of monitor do you have? We have the Tommee Tippee Suresound with sensor mat which monitors her breathing - so that set my mind at ease a bit. However, they are almost £100 - and I wouldnt think it worth it now oaying that much. Ours was a gift when she was born.

If she can roll both ways - she is safe. The incidence of SIDS reduces at 6mos which Im sure is your train of thought. She is just as safe in her cot as she is co-sleeping..

So advice - not much, just try to relax.

Is it safe - I believe so.

Is this an appropriate tank for a baby red eared slider?

I got my turtle around 3 weeks ago. I know that I need to increase the tank size as he gets older. As the weather increases i have an outside habitat that he can spend some days in supervised. ( he is too small to be left alone because of predators )

Any things that I need or anything that i am using that may be harming the turtle please inform me! Thank you!

P.S I am using white paper so that he does not see the rest of my desk and get scared. Where he basks i have pictures of grass so he feels secure.

Answer
Looks like you put in a lot of work -nice, the paper is a good idea if he's skittish, over time most sliders acclimate to people quite well, The one in my son's room - 6 yrs old now - actually seems to 'watch' the computer screen - lol.

The water may 'seem' right because the little turtle is so very, well little - but in reality he needs as much swim space as he can get - at the very very least the water should be at least two times the width of the turtle in depth to allow him to right himself if he flips over. The gravel you can likely get away with for now, as he gets larger you'll need to monitor his eating of it and lookout for imapaction. Filtration should be stronger/better - even if you cannot afford to go larger he really needs more effective filtration - internal filters just don't do a good enough job with turtles.

What is the best recording software for PC?

Oleg

I have tried multiple recording softwares and none seems suit me.

I want to start a YouTube channel, but they stop me in that.

- Bandicam, problem is (for me at least) bad sound quality.
- Fraps, huge file size.
- Dxtory, crashes my game when I attempt to record.
- BB FlashBack, it has lag, can't even handle the game.

So I'm looking for a good recording software to use for games like CoD, Minecraft, World of Wacraft and such. It would be good if it provided lower file size (as Bandicam), free if possible, good quality sound/video quality + provides me good FPS.

Thanks.

Answer
There are a number of good "Screen Capture" recording software.. the problem is, most games lag or show hesitations on 'screen capture' software.. especially if the game of high quality like "call of Duty"..

You can remedy these by having a really powerful computer:
pump up the ram to max, the graphic card to max and anything that makes a gaming computer better to max..

while keeping the quality of picture lower, like setting the game graphics to lowest settings, and the quality of recording to lowest settings with standard definition SD instead of high definition HD..

All of which will produce a poor quality video..

To improve the recording quality, you may consider lightweight, simple or less sophisticated Screen Capturing software that require less system resources (less memory, less processor power, etc..) like FastStone screen capture video recoder http://www.faststone.org/FSCaptureDetail.htm and CamStudio screen capture video recorder http://camstudio.org/ which are baby software in comparison with high-end expensive tools that may and may not work as you hope, like: Camtasia (the best software for screen capture video recorder) at http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia.html , Adobe Premier http://www.adobe.com/PremiereProâ and Corel VideoStudio at http://apps.corel.com/lp/emea/webinar/index.htmlâ ..

The problem is always that there is not enough resources for both high quality games and screen capture video recording especially if your computer is not up to the challenge..
and you may have to sacrifice the quality if you wish to use software to record the game..

The answer is going hardware.. what most gamers on YouTube do is set up a camera behind them while playing in front of the monitor or the TV screen..

YEAACH, I know.. but to produce HD quality picture, consider Hardware screen capturing devices.. and you'd need three things:
1⢠upgrading your Graphic card to the ones that support HDMI first (but read a bit about HDCP in Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hdcp )..
2⢠buy a good Screen Capturing device.. my experience is with Hauppauge HD PVR http://www.hauppauge.com/site/products/data_hdpvr2plus-gaming.html
3⢠devices like Hauppauge require a second computer or a laptop to perform the actual recording, but it doesn't have to be a high end computer.. my old laptop 5 years old with no 3D graphic card can do just that.. (just borrow your friends' laptop for a while, I hope its not a big deal)..

See the picture below, and instead of the Xbox being connected to the Hauppauge device, imagine your gaming computer is connected through that plug instead.. and the laptop is the second computer that runs the Hauppauge device..
Oh and by the way the TV is just optional.. you don't have to have the HD TV connected..

4⢠if you encounter an HDCP problem (that's why I ask you to read a bit about them)..
99% of the time, HDCP is not an issue while recording a game from a PC HDMI output but there is this 1% of the time that HDCP is an issue..
Most professionals remedy that by buying HDMI splitters that has the ability to override the HDCP protocol and cancel them.. or use additional professional tools like HDfury 2 or HD fury 3.. http://HDfury.com

And that's how professionals do it..
All the best.. and good luck

Can a baby monitor set off smoke alarm?

Cassie

Answer
A baby monitor runs off a digital signal or an analog signal, whereas a smoke detector uses light (blocked by smoke) or ionization. There's no way a monitor could set off a smoke alarm, unless it caught fire :).

We've had a couple of scenarios where our smoke alarms have gone off mysteriously, and it's been because of a low battery. Hopefully this is your problem as well.

Where can I find a baby monitor that monitors two or more rooms?

grifken

I'm expecting baby #3 in a few months and am in need of a new monitor. I currently have a Safety 1st model 08038, which has 3 bases and 1 parent receiver. It scans between each room. It has been a wonderful monitor, but after 2 years the receiver needs to be replaced. I've looked everywhere and can't seem to find a monitor that monitors 2 or more rooms. We've tried using 2 separate monitors, but they all interfere with each other. Not monitoring one of our rooms isn't an option due to health issues. Why are these not made anymore? I've even checked ebay and amazon. HELP!!

Multiple Children / Multiple Baby Monitors?

Nathaniel'

My son is 2.5 years old and we still use a Video Baby Monitor in his room. I am due in May with my 2nd child and will also need a Video Baby Monitor in the babies room.

My question is.. If I get 2 similar systems, will the channels interfere with each other? Is there a brand that makes Dual Camera systems?

Parents that have run into this situation... what did you do?

I'm not comfortable with not having a monitor in my older son's room just yet.... so I really will need two.

Thanks for your help!
Yeah, I know he will be fine... but I'm not ready yet.
So if you are going to answer my Q, then please answer it... I don't need to hear all the other crap.

Thanks.

Answer
Neither of my kids were okay with opened door check ups, ever, if we opened the door to see if they were ok, they woke up and refused to go back to sleep. Add to that that we can't even hear the doorbell or phone while in the basement, well, monitors are a necessity and we went with video monitors so we didn't end up waking the kids all the time instead of just checking on them. My son has a sleep disorder so there was no way I wanted to interrupt his sleep if I could help it. He was 21 months when his sister was born so what we did is buy two of the basic Safety 1st video monitors. I put each kid on a different channel. I mainly monitored the baby, but if I heard something from my son, I could switch channels and see if I needed to go in to him or if everything was okay. If I needed full-time monitoring of my son, say if we were watching a movie in the basement, I put on a voice only monitor I had for him -- whatever the cheapest fisher price one is -- but I could still look at him if I needed to by flipping channels. It worked fine at the same time as the video ones. It sounds really complicated but it worked out well for us.

As for dual monitoring video ones -- I couldn't find one that worked the way I needed it to work -- thus the above. They have dual systems that will monitor more than one room at a time but you're only able to keep the receiver end on one room. Basically, doing what we did above, but I think the way we did it ended up being less expensive (I think the dual system was like $250).

You can't run two videos in the same room at the same time, even on different channels, as they do interfere and you either get static or screaming. At least the ones we tried did.
