pregnant needs baby ideas. ladies?! please help!?

Jess

I am 5 months pregnant and I am going crazy getting things ready for the baby. The baby was not planned but we are still excited for its arrival. The problem is that I am so stressed out that I don't even know what I need!

My husband made me a list of what I need but it does not seem like much. This is what is on his list:
sippie cups
utensils
plates
formula
diapers
clothes
toys
crib
diaper bag
mobile
monitor
bottles
highchair
safety gates
pacifiers
Am I missing anything?

How much do baby supplies cost all together? I just moved in a new house with my husband about 8 months ago and I am worried I might have trouble getting enough money for the baby.

Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

Answer
sippie cups - not till about 9 mos old
utensils- ? You will need some little spoons after the babies a few months old
Plates- for whom, adults eat from plates
Formula - only if you don't breastfeed, which I highly recommend. It's economical, it's healthier, you lose the weight faster, etc. etc.
Diapers
Clothes- just onesies, jammies and socks are necessities
toys- not many for a newborn, you can pick them up slowly and second hand toys many times have almost no wear
crib-get it second hand from craigslist or classifieds
Diaper bag- any large shoulder bag will do
Mobile - fun to have but definitely not a necessity
Monitor- nice to have but definitely not a necessity (get it second hand)
Bottles- only a couple if you breast feed
Highchair- not until the baby can sit up
Safety gates- not until the baby is mobile at five or six months
Pacifiers- maybe, if baby doesn't suck his/her thumb
Am I missing anything-yes first I'll list necessities then I'll list the things that are just nice to have.
**car seat
*infant tub- if you're not a pro it's difficult to bathe a newborn without one, I like the one that fits in the kitchen sink.
*blankets, about six receiving blankets and at least two regular baby blankets depending on your climate.
*burping cloths or substitute a pkg. of cloth diapers
*you'll need several sets of comfy pajama type clothing, babies dirty they're clothing often so how many changes of clothing you have will decide how often you are washing clothes
*2 sheets for whatever bed the baby sleeps in
*Toiletries such as diaper cream, baby wash/shampoo (I love the lavender one), baby powder, baby lotion

Things that are nice to have
*portable crib/bassinette- I like the one that's an all in one portable crib/bassinette and changing table, You can set it up in your room for when the baby's a new born and everything will be at your fingertips in the middle of the night.
* Carrying sling or pack
* One set of hand covers
* Stroller, possibly one that works with your infant car seat
*waterproof cloth mats, to lay under them so that you don't have to change their sheets as often

I'm sure I can think of other helpful things, I have six children you are more than welcome to email me. Also remember, many very nice things are available second hand at a tremendous savings.
Congratulations!

got my 1st smiley face on clearblue ovualtion kit today. and baby danced wed, and today..but?

Answer
it is frustrating when they do that but try not to worry about it too much. i would do one more bd just to cover your bases. you can o up to 36 hours from a + opk.
also try preseed - helps a lot.
we used a fertility monitor in preference to opks as its much more exact and economical.

good luck

Baby monitors help needed!?

Kandii kid

Has anyone used either the Roger Armstrong video Baby Monitor or The Cocoon 2.4GHz wireless baby monitor!?
And if so what did you think about them?
Pros and cons about them?

Answer
I haven't tried those but I have a great suggestion. The Mobicam is awesome! It's audio/video, has night vision and you can hook it up to your tv. Plus there is extra software that you can get so that you can watch it on the internet when you're not home...

Can babies have nightmares?

Mommyto2

My 7 month daughter usually "talks" a little bit when getting up in the middle of the night to nurse. Last night TWICE she woke up screaming (which has happened before BUT...), but not just any scream, it was shrieking as if someone hurt her. I RAN to her thinking she was hurt, but as soon as I picked her up she was okay after a couple more tears. She is also teething her top teeth now, so it could be that. Its just a scream I have never heard before...
Christopher- I didnt think I had to say no ignorant answers, but of course you added one. Please...be serious people.
SGElite- speak with her??? She is 7 months old, she cant tell me whats wrong! Her room is set at 68* and she has footie pjs on...shes not cold

Answer
Hi - yes babies of this age can start to have night tremors. Check out the site, www.babycenter.com or www.parents.com and search on night tremors. Both of my sons had them and they would let out this god awful shriek in the middle of the night - it was typically very quick and often less than two or three actual shrieks in a given night. With my first son, I didn't know what they were so of course I ran into his room each time, and rocked him in my arms for a bit - usually ended up in waking him up and then became difficult to put him back in his crib. With my 2nd son, the first time I heard them I looked at our monitor which has a visual display and saw that he was fine, asleep and I left him be - I did not run into his room like I did with our 1st son. He eventually outgrew them by the time he was 9 - 10 months old. Google it too and you'll find a lot of articles on the topic, it's very common. Good luck!

When should a baby start sleeping alone in a bedroom of his own?

Greek_Warr

Answer
My son is 7 months old and some time for naps he sleeps in his room in is crib but at night......he is in our bedroom in his playpen. I have read on my favorite childcare website Baby Center [ www.babycenter.com ] that doctors say that baby's can sleep in there own room as of the first night home from the hospital. Also, that after 6 months you do not need to use a baby monitor. That is what the experts say but..........

I have tried putting him in his own room at night and I freak out. Mind you I am very deep sleeper, my husband usually has to wake me up for the baby. So I am paranoid. My husband on the other hand has no problem with letting him sleep in his room as long as the monitir is on. SO pretty much there is a difference of opionion.

This is what I think, has your child had any problems sleeping? has your child given you any reason to give you cause for alarm? If No, then the answers is when YOU are ready. You need to be able to get a full nights rest [or you know the best amount you can get] without worrying about your little one.
If yes, wait until those problems resolve themselves first.

But, a litte unsolicitated parental advice that I am just learning......The longer you wait the worse it is going to be. Not just for you but also for your little ones. Babies are learning so much everyday at night they want to sleep where they are comfortable and change leads to long hours of crying, sometimes.

Just be prepared for whatever you chose to do. Look at the website if you get frustrated, they have hundreds of articles when it comes to children and babies sleeping, eating, dressing, walking, teething, gas problems, etc. and where and how on those things.
Good luck.

Baby Comp ..................?

Has anyone here heard of the "Baby Comp" which reportedly tells you exactly which days of the month YOU are most likely to conceive and also tells you which of those three-ish days you are more likely to conceive a girl or a boy?

Does anyone know where it can be had for cheaper than this link? http://only-in-canada.com/BabyComp-Fertility-Monitor-BabyComp/M/B000NR4E3Y.htm

This is in line with the Church's theology of the body and NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING.

Please let me know --
Yes, I have "Taking Charge of your Fertility"

I see there are more like-minded folks out there than I thought.

Answer
There is a book called Taking Charge of your Fertility. With the book there is a software where you input your daily findings such as cervical mucus and softness and so on and so forth. It touches lightly on gender selection as well.. I got a book on gender selection called "How to choose the sex of your baby." I followed those two books and the software after two years of trying to concieve. I already have a little girl so I wanted a boy hence the gender selection. Well about two months into following all the steps i got pregnant and am expecting a baby boy in three weeks.
I can tell you that the book and the software was not awful cheap but to me it was worth every penny. Best of luck to you

Can a non-resident Canadian deliver a baby free of charge in Canada?

R M

As I am a Canadian citizen working and living abroad (out of canada) married to a non-canadian wife, and we are expecting a baby soon. My question is, if we choose for my new baby to be given birth and delivery take place at a hospital in Canada, do we have to pay for the hospital and any further medical care associated with the delivery and the baby health. The reason of my question is based on the fact that non-resident Canadians are not eligible for the healthcare system in Canada and do not hold a health card issued by the province.

Answer
Do you mean "have a baby at a hospital" or do you actually mean "deliver someone else's baby"?

In the former... No. If you go to a hospital pregnant, they will ask for your provincial health care card. If you have a study or work permit then you would have been eligible to apply for one. If you don't have one of these, they'll ask for proof of private (presumably travel) insurance. If they don't have this, then they are asked for a credit card number or bank card to make payments. Most visitors entering Canada visibly pregnant would be asked for a doctor's letter confirming the due date and proof of travel insurance. A typical hospital delivery runs around $3000 assuming no complications and only a short stay for the mother in the hospital.

If they can't pay, they would be billed and typically Citizenship or Immigration Canada would be contacted regarding why they are in the country pregnant without insurance. Those entering Canada from countries requiring a tourist visa as well as student or work permits would have submitted to medical tests and typically been denied the visa/permit or had the visa date limited to avoid the due date and required to have medical insurance.

If you are asking about actually delivering someone else's baby... again No. Health care in Canada is managed by the individual provinces and, while each has different rules on practicing medicine, all provinces require midwives to be certified and licensed within the province. All require midwives to have either a medical degree or to complete a four year Bachelors program at university, undergo clinical exams, perform specific practicums, be monitored by the province, and carry certain insurance. Most also have fairly strict procedures in terms of certain tests which need to be performed prior to a home birth.

If you are talking about a woman going into labour in an emergency situation... sure anyone can help her delivery a baby.

Baby monitor for ipad?

N

I am looking for a baby monitor camera to use on my ipad. The one I have now uses a monitor screen but my house is too big and it is now out of range. I want a monitor to use with wifi so I can see my baby on my ipad. I would like one with the same features as my current one. One that pans, and I can talk back to the baby when shes crying. I've found one so far, (Motorola Blink1 Wi-Fi Video Camera for Remote Viewing with iPhone and Android Smartphones and Tablets ) but looking for other options and personal feedback. Thanks!

Answer
I have Foscam ip camera at home and still using it after a year. Initial setup wasn't easy, but when you're done with setup it works properly. Here you can find more info on baby monitors / cameras : http://babyneedslist.com/health-and-safety-products-baby-monitors/

How to make a Video baby monitor?

i dont kno

Can someone please tell me how to make a video baby monitor? The only problem is i dont have any fancy gadgets, like an iphone or ipad or ianything! lol.
i have an extra laptop and i have an old webcam. could this work to make a video baby monitor??
i want to be able to connect to it somehow from my laptop that iam currently using, like skyp or something??
Iam very bad with computers lol
I understand what your saying and thats why i dont want to spend any money on this. But if i can figure out a way to do it with stuff i have laying around i would like to see him, and not have to sneak into his room to see him. ( because yes i will be going in to look at him, i have from day one and i dont think that will stop for quiet awhile)

Answer
I can't help you with any of the technical stuff, but I wanted to say that video baby monitors are quite useless. Its one of those baby items that is totally unnecessary.

What's important is that you *hear* your baby wake up and cry for you. Its not important to *see* your baby - after all, you will be very, VERY tired yourself. Its not like you'll be up all night watching your baby sleep.

Does a deactivated iphone still function as an ipod touch?

Angela Ava

I just upgraded from a 1st generation to 3GS. I want to take my old iphone and use it as an educational device for my son - animal pictures, kid's songs, kid's games, etc. I'd even like to use it as a baby monitor if it will still function on wifi. My AT&T dealer said not to hook it up to itunes because it is deactivated. What does this mean? Is the phone still useful?

Answer
yes...when i used to work at best buy a kid stole a model iphone and it is able to be used as an ipod touch.

has anyone used the Respisense clip on baby monitor?

troubledin

I asked this last night but no one had used or knew about this type of monitor. It clips on the baby's diaper and is supposedly more reliable and easier to use than the sensors that go on top of or under the crib mattress. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Here is the website: http://www.respisense.com/en/index.php
"Respisense monitors the breathing efforts of a baby. If the breathing effort stops, slows down too much, or becomes too shallow, the built-in stimulator the Tummy Tickle will gently stir baby to breathe, failing which a loud alarm will alert the nearest adult. Respisense monitors are particularly suitable for babies at home, but can be used almost anywhere. No other baby monitor allows the freedom of movement that Respisense does. The award-winning and patented invention is so compact and light that it can be used wherever your baby may fall asleep."

Answer
after my older twin died from SIDS, we had my younger son on a monitor. it was annoyingly loud, and he was always fine, they set it wrong at the hospital.

if your baby isn't at risk for SIDS (newer research links it to a damaging of ear sensors for CO2 at birth, which fits the bill in my son's case) and if you take the precautions, its not worth the money or the worry.
but if your diaper wrapping techniques are tight, and you want to have nightmares involving beeping horribleness, and if you believe your child is at risk for breathing difficulties, by all means use it. you might try punching the name of the product in combination with 'reviews' or consumer feed back into your favorite search engine.

Why the difference between USA and UK?

Mom of E a

In my search to find the perfect bottle/pacifier/breastpump/crib/baby monitor/etc. I have noticed that several companies sell the same exact product in the USA and UK, but by different names. Also, I have found that on American websites they show something neat that I would like to try only to find out it is only sold in the UK. I wonder why they do that? Any thoughts? :)

Answer
This is likely due to the difference in consumer product safety restrictions between the two regions. I have provided links to the respective organizations in each country.

When did you stop using a baby monitor?

J

This is a spin-off from Too Lazy To Use Spellcheck's question about still checking on your sleeping child.

We never used a baby monitor, mainly b/c our daughter slept in our room. Even when she took naps throughout the day, I was always in the same room or the next one.

A week ago I went to a friend's house. She took me into her bedroom to show me something and I noticed she had 2 baby monitors on her night stand. She saw me looking at them and said, "One is for the baby (a few months old) and one is for Sophie." Her daughter Sophie is 6 yrs old. I thought that was a little odd, but I didn't say anything.

When did you stop using a monitor? Did anyone continue to use one as their child was older?

Answer
Didn't need or wanted to buy a baby monitor... at one point after having our second child we did consider it but after thinking it through we realized what we have known from the beginning and that it was not needed and would just be a waste of money. We don't need a device helping us monitoring our children when we are capable of doing it ourselves. We didn't have one for our first child so it make sense that we didn't need it for our second. From them being newborns to growing up to be a young child I find that we've always spent all our time watching over them constantly because giving them 100% of our attention our love is very important to us. We had our children because all our time spent making sure they are loved, feed, happy, etc is what we expect as parents now why would we want to leave them alone for minutes or hours to play by themselves? For us it is essential that we spend as much time as we can with our children, we live for them more than we live for ourselves. We are truly blessed to have our children in our lives and we intend to be the kind of parents that they need and want.

Answer
well, u can go to babies r us website and they have a list for ppl who are going to register..of course it has a lot of things on there that you don't need, but if you weed through you can get what you need out of it...the things i liked;found most useful, etc......

.i would def recommend:
a diaper genie 2; idk why ppl don't like them, there is NO smell in my dd 's room
changing table..will save your back, good for diap changes, clothes changes, sponge baths, etc and you have shelves to store your new baby must haves....i have canvas bins on the shelves to store things that are good to have in reach or easily available...
monitor--i like the graco imonitor, recently bought a second one for another room in the house bc i liked the other one so much, it has been working well for over 8 mos now, and it has good range, battery life, and i can hear EVERYTHING; never any interference....it works great..
boppy pillow with cotton covers, soft ones don't fit as well for some reason
lots of baby hangers, and baby hangers with clips to keep outfits together
primo euro bathtub
prince lionheart diaper depot and wipewarmer; ours works well and the wipes are still very warm when we get them to out dd's bottom; and she doesn't freak out when we are out and they aren't warmed, but seems to appreciate it when they are..
health kit: brush, comb, thermometer (not an ear one, not as accurate), nail clippers, etc.
baby meds, generic is just as good and a lot cheaper...desitin(or plain zinc oxide if you can find it)..not creamy, has less zinc ox in it....infant mylicon and tylenol
lots of diapers , make sure wherever you buy them will let you exchange them for a diff size if you need to even after the return period...brus let me do that, and buy a small pack of a couple brands to see which you prefer before you open the big boxes...wipes, lots of them, without alcohol or fragrance! we use swaddlers diapers and pampers sensitive wipes; no rashes, no reactions to their ingredients, diapers hold a lot when they have too and the netting tends to keep the wet off her bottom...
lots of baby washclothes, you may have to use them on baby's bum if it is really sensitive and gets a rash....and baby towels, but you could use your reg towels if money is an issue

swing, pref swings two ways and plugs in instead of batteries
bouncy seat
infant travel system! easy, easy, easy--we got the graco tour deluxe; it is great, folds with one hand, several seating positions, lays flat for sleep; has a big basket underneath and cup holders for mom and dad, one for baby , place for snacks for baby, and a 'pocket' up top for keys, cell phone, whatever you wanna put there...
play yard, get one with bassinet feature if you want to, easier to keep baby in your room for a while before putting them in crib in their room=we have chicco discovery and it is awesome, has more padding than most, easy to wash..machine wash, most are wipe down...very sturdy, has nightlight, vibration, etc and a flip up change table, has wooden slats that slide in under mattress for support...not that much more exp than the others and much better in my opinion
passys--she loves soothies and that is all she will take..
baby wash, again frag free, dye free
frag free , dye free laundry detergent
clothes hamper or basket
lingerie bag for socks, mittens, anything little so they don't get lost in the wash...
something to put baby toys in
extra toy links
lullaby cd and small cd player; my dd has come to love white noise, she naps with a fan and a womb bear; sleeps at night with a fan....
oh, mosquito cover for your infant carrier..it's where you can see in , baby can see out, but strangers cant just walk up and touch your baby, and they will!!!!!
all i can come up with now...LOL
diaper bags; big one for everything you may need, leave in car unless you will be somewhere a long time, and a small one to stick what you will need for a short run in so you don't have to haul the bigger one

if ffing:
avent formula dispenser; has better review than the ones made by sassy, and convert to a snack cup later...i loved it so much i bought a second one!
bottles--really liked playtex ventaire advanced when she was young, more pieces but it's easy to get them clean when the top and bottom comes off...and they vent through the bottom instead of the nip so no bubbles or foam going back up into baby's milk; they will leak if you don't put them together correctly, but we have had no probs with them and have never had to replace any parts on them..if u decide on them and have leaks, email me and i will explain how to keep them from leaking...:O)
bottle and nip brushes--i really like the ones by munchking that don't have a sponge on the end of the brush, they come in diff colors mixed with white and have a great nip brush in the handles....
drying racks--again, i really like munchkins...
formula mixer: i like dr brown's formula pitcher bc you don't shake it it is only abo

Wireless Network signal?

Johnny

I recently installed a wireless network in my house i have had alot of trouble with my pc getting signal i have now moved the pc onto the desk and it is better signal.I was wondering if i moved the router into the attic would it increase the signal range of the router. Many thanks
And also is there any way in incresing the ariel reception on the pci card on my pc?
id also like to add that i live in an old irish cottage and the wall's the router has to travel through is about 1 foot thick and then 2 more walls

Answer
If you have a wireless network installed in your home, you know that getting perfect reception can be tricky. Things like the simplest electrical devices can cause enough interference to reduce your wireless network range by a good 30 percent. If that is the case, don't despair. Here are some things you can do to improve your wireless network range.

First of all, make sure your wireless router is installed in a central location, preferably mounted on a wall, and as far away as possible from other devices also running on 2.4 GHz, such as microwave ovens, baby monitors, and cordless phones. Even Bluetooth gadgets can cause trouble and affect your wireless network range. Anything from closed doors to odd corners can cause interference, so try to install your wireless router as close as possible to the source. Metal objects in general can also cause interference and affect your wireless network range, as do windows and electronics.

Once you have found the perfect place for your wireless router, try switching the channels until you find a frequency that works. Most routers come pre-programmed to run on channel 1 or 11, but they can also run without problems on other channels 6 and 11. If you suspect that your neighbors may also have wireless routers in their homes, it is possible that the interference is coming from them. Test different channels before settling on one.

If all fails, consider replacing the original antenna that came with the router. A wireless network range can benefit greatly from a hi-gain antenna, which directs all signals in one particular direction rather than a standard antenna, which is omni-directional. An omni-directional antenna can often misdirect signals towards walls, which diminishes the capacity of the router. You can also consider adding a wireless repeater, which simply amplifies the signal when positioned between the router and the computer, ensuring a better reception.

Sometimes you have no choice but to upgrade your router if you want to noticeably improve your wireless network range. Old Wi-Fi routers have an output of 11-megabits-per-second, while the latest models can reach 280 mbps.

Best Home Network Router?

Isaac Skor

Most everything is done wirelessly and up to 7 devices will be connected at once so its got to be able to handle some traffic. We will search the web, stream video, download content, and game on it. So what is the best?

Answer
No matter what router you choose, it will only be as fast as your Internet connection.

Let me explain,

A fast router or WiFi connection can not make your Internet faster.

A router connects two separate networks and manages the traffic between them.

In most home network applications the router connects your local group of computers and devices known as the LAN with the Internet, commonly called the WAN or Wide Area Network.

Your WAN speed is determined by your ISP and is measured in Mbps (Millions of bits per second).

For example, If you pay for a 3 Mbps Internet connection, you will get 3 Mbps.

No router or connection type will change your 3 Mbps Internet speed. This connection bandwidth is shared by your entire LAN via your router.

If you have a 3 Mbps Internet plan and one user is utilizing 2.5 Mbps of the bandwidth to stream a Netflix movie that only leaves 0.5 Mbps for all of the rest of the users on the LAN.

Fast wireless routers and connections such as Gigabit Ethernet are designed to stream large files on your LAN quickly. The high speed routers permit fast transfer of files between devices connected to your LAN, however WAN speed is still limited by your ISP.

Only way to speed up Internet connection is to get a faster plan or ISP.

ROUTERS:
Wireless signals are affected by many factors including distance, wall density, electrical interference, directional antenna range, etc.

Just because a particular wireless router works good at one location does not guarantee that it will have similar performance in a different location due to variance in the factors listed above.

You should try to centrally locate your wireless router or gateway up high and away from dense walls and electrical and 2.4 GHz wireless interference such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, baby monitors, etc.

Wireless routers are fairly inexpensive. http://www.amazon.com/s/?_encoding=UTF8&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957&field-keywords=wireless%20router&url=search-alias%3Daps&sprefix=wireless%20ro%2Caps%2C490&tag=excharge-20

As far as the brand goes, the brand is not as important as the model. Some manufacturers release a good model but the next is crap. I would look at the Amazon reviews of models that interest you. Even if you don't buy from Amazon the reviews will tell you a lot about which models to avoid. Look for at least 15 or more reviews with a 4 star or better rating. Read a few and see if they sound like the particular model will work for your application.

Good Luck...

newborn baby checklist?

so i am a young teen mom well soon to be mom and me and my boyfriend were wondering if somebody could give us a newborn baby check list so we know what to get for our little baby we do not know if its a boy or girl yet please help us also if you have some new parenting tips for how to take care of a newborn baby plz feel free to give us your ideas we need all the help we can get

Answer
Being young I'm assuming you're not rolling in money ;) There are many "essentials" that you really actually don't need. A change table is handy and comfortable, but not necessary. You can lay the baby on your bed or on a rug on the floor for nappy/clothes changes. Unless you're living in a big place, you probably won't need a baby monitor. We've got a decent 3 bedroom home and bought one when we were expecting our first, but really, the baby cries loud enough for you to hear them anyway. Don't buy too many toys, if any at all. It'll be a long time till they'll even notice them, in which time others may have given them as gifts or you may have had their first Christmas when you can buy them for them. "Baby" towels are nice if you can afford them, but otherwise an adult towel will still do the exact same thing.

-A good stash of newborn size nappies (in case you don't want to go to the shops for the first week or so)
-Baby wipes (don't just buy the cheapest you can find, because they probably won't work. They'll be ridiculously thin and dry out as soon as you open the packet - found this out the hard way. But you also don't need the most expensive and fancy ones either.)
-Not sure what climate you live in, but have a few jumpsuits and other clothes in both size 0000 and 000 (if you see them on special) because they'll probably fit in the 0000 and you want them ready to go, but they might come up as big bubbas and need the 000. DO NOT take any tags off until you're about to dress them, that way what doesn't fit/get used and can be taken back for a refund (if you kept the receipt) or you can swap them for clothes that do fit.
-Plenty of cloths and/or bibs for wiping up baby spew
-2-3 baby wraps (I would go with muslin in case your baby is born during warmer weather and you still want to wrap them. If where you live is cold, you can always warm them up with an extra blanket or warmer clothes under the wrap)
-2-3 baby blankets
-cot
-if baby is born in colder weather, about 2 beanies to keep their little head warm
-a pair of mittens is good to keep hands warm and prevent their nails scratching them, but not really necessary if your budget doesn't allow for them.
-Baby bath wash (my favourite is Johnson & Johnson Top to toe)
-Baby powder and nappy rash cream (you don't want to only buy these once your baby has a rash, you'll want them handy so you can deal with it immediately and not have to wait till the next time the shop is open)

For you - plenty of maternity pads and breast pads (if you run out and send your boyfriend out for more, you should give him the packet to take to the shops with him so he comes back with the right ones).

Parenting tip - ask everything! No matter how silly it sounds, if you're unsure, ask. And be specific if you need to be. Good luck :)

Newborn: Baby Monitor?

Poestalker

As of now my 2 week old sleeps in our room but Im almost ready to put him in his crib. The monitor creeps me out. Its childish but it truely scares me. I tried it out for a hour earlier this week and just couldnt even fall asleep. With the distortion and white noise and his odd noises it just kept me awake...

Any advice??

Answer
You can usually change the frequency on the moniter so ther is less interference. Also, you can turn down the volume on it - you won't hear the white noise, but a crying baby will come through very clearly :)

Mommys on the go - monitors?

Does anyone know of a monitor I can leave with a baby sitter and see it on my phone ? Is there such thing. !?

Answer
There are many Internet cameras but you need to have a connection to the Internet, most likely broadband (cable, DSL phone line, satellite) Internet Service Provider (ISP).

There are iPhone or Android phone apps that can be run to take periodic pictures and send them automatically to your smart phone by email or other means. I am not a smart phone user but I am sure you can search for those. http://www.pcworld.com/article/242576/how_to_use_your_ios_or_android_smartphone_or_tablet_as_a_wireless_network_camera.html

First time mom here, just registered for my shower yesterday & wondering what products are the best?

Q. Im almost 19 weeks pregnant & had a gender ultrasound yesterday & found out that Im expecting a GIRL! So, we registered right after my appointment at Target & since Im a first time mom we werent sure on a few things to put on the registry. Im wondering if any moms can give me advice & recommendations on the following items that worked best for you & are useful.

The following are things we didnt add to the registry, but are planning to today after getting some reviews on the best ones at Target.

1) Bottles, I have no clue what types are good for newborns. Im not going to breastfeed because Im taking blood pressure meds & dont want to pass to baby, so just bottle feeding

2) Bottle sterilization - which is better, steam or microwave? And which brands?

3) Monitors - This is a very hard one for me. Is video really better? Digital? Analog? Im so clueless on this one

4) Bassinette - We plan on having baby in one in our room the first couple of months. Should I go with something neutral as we are planning to have another child in the future & dont want to have to get another if we get a girly one now & then end up having a boy later. Any certain types better than others?

5) Humidifier - There are cute animals ones at Target (I like the frog) is that a good one, or a Vicks?

6) Sling - Do babies really like these? They look uncomfortable the ones that curve across the body, like babys neck is being strained. And which brand, kind?

**** Thanks ladies, Im a first time mom & just want to get the right stuff not to waste other peoples money & have things that are useful. Baby stuff is so expensive!! Any other tips, advice on anything I forgot is helpful! ****

Answer
1) VERY Hard to choose before the baby is born. Skip adding this and just purchase 2-4 bottles yourself of your choosing, Dr Browns is a good choice but expensive or Avent or similar or also good. Once you know she will definately drink out of them then go out and buy more. If she doesn't like them you'll have wasted a lot of money having to replace them for other ones. Just keep some money aside under your mattress for when the time comes!

2)Microwave!!!! Soooo much quicker and easier. Takes like 4 mins for 4 bottles! Steam is overrated and waaay to expensive compared to the microwave one.
If you own a dishwasher, wash the bottles in hot soapy water, rinse in hot water (what you have to do before using any steriliser anyway), and throw them in the washer instead.

3) I chose just a regular one without all the bells and whistles. I only need to hear my baby and that is it. All those extra bits and pieces is just a marketing ploy. Just use a regular one with good sound clarity. Mine is a basic fisher price sound and lights monitor and it works just perfectly. Its not like I can see my baby when I'm sleeping anyway and thats really when you need it. It does have a little night light on it which I do recommend though. This is it and is great.

4) Def get a neutral one. Dont get a pink or blue. I do like the idea of the arms reach co sleeper that the other person said but only if its on wheels and the side that juts up to the parents bed can actually be closed off so you can utilise it in other areas of the house. if you don't know what they are heres a link
http://www.totscorner.co.uk/images/Universal_CoSleeper.jpg
otherwise a normal, neutral coloured one is great. Nothing too fancy with music, vibrating, rocking or anything like that. Its a complete waste of the extra money and those functions will not get used especially as its only for the first couple of months when a newborn could care less about it lol

5) Def get the vicks one. It will last, the novelty ones will not

6) I tried slings and carriers. Gave me such a sore back and were uncomfortable and I felt less than agile and more cumbersome than when I was pregnant, if thats even possible! but others swear by them, its personal preference. I'd rather put my baby in his or her pram/stroller to be honest. It was okay when they were less than 12 weeks old but after that it just made me way too sore.
Apparently the contoured slings are fine for them because when you think about it they are all scrunched up in the womb so being in those slings is apprently no different. I wouldn't use one personally

Hope that helps! Good Luck!!

>>> External Audio Interface help <<<?

Joe

hi, i'm looking to buy an external audio interface. which one should i get?
the main reason is to get the best sound quality i can out of my monitors (KRK Rokit 6s)
however it'd be good to be able to plug an instrument or mic or two in as well.
my budget is about £150 roughly (or around $230 for you Americans)
i also need help with the cabling. i think XLR is what i want, but the KRKs also have TRS (and unbalanced RCA). any advice about the different cabling would be much appreciated too.

interfaces i've been looking at already are the M-Audio Fast Track Pro or variations of and the Presonus Audiobox... any other suggestions are welcome.

Thanks!
also, it needs to be able to work with my Windows 7 (64 bit) PC and a MAC laptop i'm getting shortly

Answer
One of the things that you need to be cautious about is the stability of drivers. There are a lot of audio interfaces out there that do the job in terms of hardware and features. But their compatibility with software is horrible due to faulty drivers. Especially since you plan to use that on a 64-bit Windows 7 for a while, driver stability is all the more important.

I would advise you to buy the Focusrite Saffire 6 USB. It is available on Amazon UK for exactly £150. It has 2 microphone/instrument inputs with phantom power. And apart from RCA outputs, it has 1/4'' Phono outputs too(which is exactly the same thing as TRS. This baby's drivers are SO solid that it responds well to anything I throw at it. For my last song, it ran 24 tracks of audio with three plugins on each track! It is built like a tank, so it'll last a while too.

Now in comparison to the M-Audio Fast Track, this is far far better. My friend has the M-Audio, so I have hands on experience with both these interfaces. The pre-amps in the M-Audio are just not as good and the output is a bit muddier. The build quality is not as good, and there are a few latency issues. And more importantly, the drivers are a hit and a miss. So I would advise you to stay away from M-Audio Interfaces. Their keyboards and monitors are great. Interfaces, not so much.

I am not sure about the Presonus as I haven't used it. But this is what I found from a review. And if you are a guitar player this might effect you:

"I tried the PreSonus AudioBox recently and was extremely disappointed with it. I didn't try it with a microphone since I'm usually recording guitars direct, but the preamps are designed to ALWAYS have 20 db of gain being applied even with the input turned all the way down. I looked this up on their official forums, and it is intentional. Because of this, I was never able to get a signal that wouldn't clip when palm muting (even with passive pickups). They don't have any kind of software mixer either, so you have to buy an attenuator pad or find some other workaround.

There's also a knob that you use to blend the mix between the hardware direct monitoring signal and the regular output. Even with the knob turned all the way to the regular output side, you still get some "leak" from the direct signal coming through the monitors. This can cause feedback problems, give you inaccurate monitoring (in my situation, because I'm hearing dry/clean guitar signal at the same time as amp sim VSTs), and is just a general pain in the ass.

And just to add icing on the cake...I also discovered that the output starts digitally clipping with the output knob at only 9 O'CLOCK! Ridiculous."

So in conclusion. I will hands down recommend the Focusrite Saffire 6 USB. And if it is of any good, it is an English company based in High Wycombe (looked up wikipedia). So it is always good to work with a local company as support is far more available. M-Audio support is terrible. Enjoy!

which baby monitor is good for a long distance? read more.?

SueWithTwo

We've just moved into a mobile home, and its 80 ft long, my daughters bed room is on one end and ours is on the other. She is used to waking up walking to me and getting in our bed... but the way we are layed out in the house now, i dont even think i would hear her wake up...and not to mention thinking of her waking up and trying to maneuver through the house half asleep (shes 20 months old).

So i've decided the best bet would be putting a baby gate in her door way or maybe the end of the hall... and using a baby monitor to hear her....

Which monitors have you had a good experience with with a long distance range? thanks

Answer
Hi! I think the basic Fisher Price sound and lights will do fine. If you just want one monitor then it will cost only $20 at the local babiesrus or wal-mart. I have one and I use it upstars and down. We have a three level townhouse that is 1,300 sq ft and I take it with me when I go to the basement to do laundry or even when I go outside to tend the garden. It works good. I also would recommend using rechargeable AAA batteries because those things use up a lot of batteries quick if they are used on a daily basis. You can get them at any dept store and a battery charger. It's worth the money too.

long-distance baby monitors?

John 13:34

my grandmother is 87 years old and can't really move around. she lives with us. my family plans on going to the beach this summer, and my dad would feel at ease if we had a long-distance baby monitor that we could use (or more pref. a walkie talkie that didn't require her to push any buttons) while she stays in the motel. it would probably be about 300 yards or so. it's pretty close to the beach. is there any device like this?

Answer
The Fisher Price Long Distance baby monitor (link below at Amazon) works only to about 100 yards (in actual use, about 75-80) and two years ago, this was the longest distance one we could find (my BIL was recovering from a stroke and my sister wanted it while working in garden). This was the longest distance baby monitor we could find. A walkie talkie is likely your best bet.

is a baby video monitor camera of 900mHz (with night vision)dangerous if placed within one foot of a baby?

Answer
If you have a nightlight in the room, you don't need one with night vision. I think those are made to be used from across the room anyway.

What baby monitor do you recommend?

J D

We are shopping for a baby monitor for our second child (our first is 6 now so we long ago got rid of her baby things). We plan to "room in" (have baby in our room in a pack n' play) for the first 6 months or so like we did with our daughter, so this monitor will be used primarily during naps and after the baby has passed the most critical SIDS risk phase. With that in mind, which monitor would you suggest and why? TIA!

Answer
I use a motorola video baby monitor and its quite great. It's night vision is pretty good.

Baby Monitor Set: Which one to choose?

Expecting

Answer
Your best choice would be the: Summer Infant D & N Handheld Color Video Baby Monitor

The price is approximately $140, and you get some great features like night vision capabilities, high quality sound and high quality color video. This unit will also transmit up to 350 ft, so you will never be out of range in your home.

Monitor baby on monitor while at work?

hOd

I am a first time mom and really afraid of leaving my newborn at daycare. But I work so I really have no choice. I thought if I could find a monitor with a screen that I could leave with my baby at daycare so I could see him while at work that would be awesome. Do they have those? I searched on the web but I cant find anything long distance. Only house-hold monitors. I am willing to pay a high price it really doesn't matter, I just have to find a way to ease this fear of mine. Baby is due in 2 months.

Please advise I would really appreciate it!!

Answer
don't think so, but...there are daycares that have webcams in them that you can access from a computer at any time of the day.....maybe you could find one of those...if i HAD to put my baby in daycare, that is the only kind i would leave her in....probably more expensive, but when it comes to our babies and their safety and well being, i am willing to pay for it...and crappy ppl tend to behave better when they know they are being watched...

which baby monitor is beter?

i need to get one and i was wondering which one you would get and why thanks would you get this one http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=7977222

or

http://www.target.com/First-Years-49MHz-Monitor-Receivers/dp/B0001GZ3VE/sr=1-13/qid=1213662627/ref=sr_1_13/601-1610678-6824921?ie=UTF8&index=target&rh=k%3Ababy%20monitors&page=1

are they both good please write as much info as possible

Answer
What are your needs? Neither of these monitors will likely work in a 3 level home or in one with a lot of square feet. They just don't have the distance. I do want to say that your Fisher Price selection worked perfect for my cousin and his GF in their split level home.

If you need more distance or need it also for going outside (say to get the mail or garden), then this one would be a better choice.
http://www.target.com/Fisher-Price-Private-Connection-Monitor-Receivers/dp/B000WU5NFA/qid=1213663234/ref=br_1_3/601-2826059-0605710?ie=UTF8&node=1041936&frombrowse=1&rh=&page=1

Even people at e-pinions didn't like your one selection and I suspect the problem is interference in the neighborhood or within the home. As mentioned, my cousin had it with no problems after nearly 3 years. I would ignore the advice of the reviewer at Target. She has had 3 monitors and nothing works. She doesn't get a clue that it is her HOME that is the problem, not the monitors.
