Whats the best baby monitor?

Kelly Vibe

I am having my first child soon and would like a monitor that has good sound and picture quality day and night so i can make dinner ect and just look at my hand held monitor instead of going in the other room to see why he is making noise.

Answer
angel care, i get so much more rest knowing that angel care is monitoring my baby girl, it takes a little bit to get used to adjusting the sensitivity of the monitor so you dont get false alarms but its the best monitor out there, plus you can use it on into the toldler years when your kido sneaks out of bed the alarm will sound,

the alarm sounds if the monitor does not detect motion or breathing after 20 secs

there is not picture on this monitor but rather a motion detection system, when you go to sleep at night you know rather or not your baby is still moving and ok

will you pls show the block diagram of the baby monitor machine design?how it works?

Answer
Baby Monitor is BT's first entry into this market. Digital technology means crystal-clear sound quality and no interference. The Baby Monitor Plus has extra features in addition to the Baby Monitor, including an LCD, five lullabies and a temperature monitor. A range of up to 300 metres (in ideal conditions) and an Intercom feature means that a constant link is maintained between parent and baby.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Gerry Baby Products Company, of Thornton, Colo., is announcing a voluntary recall of approximately 990,000 Model 602 Gerry Deluxe Baby Monitors. Wires inside the monitor may be improperly connected, resulting in the product overheating with the possibility of the monitor causing fire. Another contributing factor is when blankets or other bedding are placed around or on top of the monitor blocking ventilation.

Gerry urges consumers to read all product warnings and instructions accompanying all monitors. Consumers should not place any monitor in the crib, among blankets or bedding, or in any position that interferes with ventilation for the monitor.

Gerry is aware of one fire without injuries involving a Model 602 monitor with this manufacturing error. This information was brought to CPSC's attention by a member of the International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI). In addition, CPSC has also received reports alleging Model 602 Baby Monitor involvement in two other fires, including one with a fatality and an injury, and 13 incidents of the monitors getting warm to the touch, including one skin burn. Gerry stated that only one report (no injuries) of these 16 claims was conclusively determined to have been caused by the Model 602 monitor.

The two-piece monitor sets resemble walkie-talkies. The monitors have pale gray and royal blue plastic casing. A red "on" light and a blue "Gerry" label appear on the front of each monitor. The back of the monitors are embossed with "GERRY DELUXE BABY MONITOR MODEL 602" and the manufacturer's date code. The date code appears as a circle of numbers, with an arrow pointing to the number of the month and the two-digit year number on either side of the arrow. This recall involves monitors with date codes "8806" (June 1988) through "9005" (May 1990).

Juvenile product and baby supply stores and department stores sold the recalled monitors nationwide from June 1988 through May 1990. The monitors were packaged in blue cardboard boxes labeled in part, "Gerry Deluxe Baby Monitor...Listen to Your Baby from any Home Location...Gerry Baby Safetronics..."

Consumers who own Model 602 monitors should contact Gerry toll-free at (800) 672-6289 for instructions on how to return the recalled monitors for a free replacement monitor. For more information, consumers should call Gerry, or write to the company at Attn: Building R-602 Recall, 1500 East 128th Avenue, Thornton, CO 80241.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission protects the public from unreasonable risks of injury or death from 15,000 types of consumer products under the agency's jurisdiction. To report a dangerous product or a product-related injury and for information on CPSC's fax-on-demand service, call CPSC's hotline at (800) 638-2772 or CPSC's teletypewriter at (800) 638-8270. Can anyone recommend a good baby video monitor with pan/tilt feature?

Apey

Answer
The Samsung SEW-3037W is a great video monitor with pan/tilt and zoom features. It also comes with night vision, good quality audio and good battery life. You might also want to consider the Levana Astra. This model has really good battery life.

The Motorola MBP36 is also a popular choice, but I think the above mentioned models are better

Home security system vs baby monitor?

rachkw81

We are having Baby #2 in a couple of months and we live in a 2-story home, with our bedroom and main living on a different floor than the children's bedrooms. I want to be able to monitor each of my children in their own rooms by seeing and hearing them at the same time. I am also interested in monitoring them in the playroom. Has anyone found that a home security camera system to be more effective or affordable than a traditional baby monitor? If so, what is it like for you and which system did you use? Geeky dweebs and nerds are especially encouraged to reply with help.

Answer
To be honest, many baby video monitors can offer what you need. You can buy the parent unit and add more cameras as you need to monitor different rooms. I would take a look at the Samsung SEW-3037W. You can view up to 4 rooms at the same time using 4 cameras, via split screen on the parent unit. The night vision quality is good, it works over a large range and you can pan, zoom and tilt with the cameras

Best Value Baby Monitor?

Linda K

I check out some the best baby monitors recommended by consumer report, but most of them are a little expensive then I expected. Well, I'm hoping for something that is affordable and has crystal clear sound. Any idea?

Answer
I also vote for Safety 1st:)

At first, I was thinking to get a Phlips DESC baby monitor for my wife, but it's too pricey for me at that time. Anyway, after much research, I don't think you can find any better deal then this Safety First High Def Digital baby monitor for paying less then $80.

It is even better then my previous Graco iMonitor baby monitor(pretty good and cheap too). There are no static sound and the channel is pretty clear even though I have cordless phone and wireless network at home. Hope this help:)

Answer
The majority of monitors are not interactive reptiles, they are display animals. They can learn to tolerate you, but all contact should be iniated by the lizard. I starred this in the hopes that the other experienced, no-nonsense keepers will come through and offer you their wisdom as well (Varanid, Azure Child).

Do not force your monitor to be handled, it only reinforces that you are BAD. As far as sitting with your monitor in an empty tub, this seems to be one of the fads for "taming" a monitor that I hope goes by the wayside SOON. You take a lizard that is afraid of you/doesn't trust you and force it to be in a small area with place to hide and no way to escape what it sees as DANGER/PREDATOR and you are causing it tons of unneeded stress. Sounds like some serious torture to me, how about you?? Think of something you are deathly afraid of.... now imagine being forced to endure that thing with no means of hiding or escape, that's what sitting in the tub with you is for a monitor, extreme unneeded torture.

Enough stress = unhealthy or dead monitor.

Go about your business, feed, clean and water the lizard daily, ignoring it as you meet it's needs. Eventually it will get curious and come check you out... This doesn't mean it's time to pick it up, just let it check you out, eventually you can attempt touching it when it comes to you.

Hopefully you have it set up properly. These guys are not cuddle-buddies, they are wild animals. There is no value in breaking their spirit or causing them to give up, other than the self-satisfaction of keepers who think that owning a reptile is about them, not the animal. With lots of time and patience you can end up with a monitor that will check you out, allow touching, and will be a great display animal. Or you can be like thousands of other keepers and break their spirits to fulfill your desires, stress kills these guys, breaking their spirit can actually lead to a monitor who has totally given up on everything, including eating.

What is the best 2 room video baby monitor?

Kristin

I would like to get a baby video monitor but I want it in both kids rooms with only one monitor screen. What is the best one on the market for the cheapest price. Or...is there a video system out that has only one camera that I can order a 2nd camera separate for?

Answer
Hi

Like any other products, baby monitors need to suit your lifestyle and satisfy your requirements, even to the slightest of details. So before you purchase one, try to dwell on a number of factors first. These things will not only serve as your guide, they will also help you pick out the best type or brand for your little one.

Some of the things you need to consider are:

Range
Portability
Levels of Interference
Video Monitoring Options

There are more details at the link in the source box about the Best Baby Monitors and I hope they help

Take care

what's the best type of baby monitor?

penmaster

we're having our first baby and we're not sure of all the listening monitors out there, which one is best?

Answer
From my ConsumerReports.Org subscriptions:

Baby monitors
Baby monitors are an extra set of ears--and, in some cases, eyes--that allow you to keep tabs on your sleeping baby. There are two basic types: audio and video/audio. Both operate within a selected radio frequency band to send sound from the babyâs room to a receiver. Each monitor consists of a transmitter (child unit) and one or more receivers (parent units). Video/audio monitors have a small wall-mounted or tabletop camera to transmit images to a video monitor.

A baby monitorâs challenge is to transmit recognizable sound (and/or images) over a distance with minimal interference--static, buzzing, or irritating noise--from other electronic products and transmitters, including cordless phones that share the same frequency bands, cellular phones, appliances, and even fluorescent lights. Interference can also be hearing someone elseâs conversation, which makes it difficult, if not impossible, to decipher the sounds coming from your monitor. Interference can also mean fuzzy reception in video monitors. Overall, interference is probably the biggest complaint parents have about baby monitors.

SHOPPING SECRETS

Feel free to skip this purchase. Some parents are reassured by the constant surveillance of a babyâs every whimper and movement. Others find it nerve-racking and feel like they have to be hypervigilant. Decide which category youâre in before you go shopping. A monitor isnât a must-have. If you live in a small house or apartment or want a break when your baby is sleeping--which is legitimate--itâs OK not to have one.

Consider your home and lifestyle. You may appreciate a monitor with both sound and lights, so you can âseeâ your babyâs cries. The louder he cries, the more lights light up. If youâll be taking business calls during naptime, for example, it can be helpful to turn the sound down low and rely on the lights. A video monitor can serve the same purpose, though we believe an audio monitor with lights can suffice. Similarly, if you live in a large house, you may want a monitor with two receivers rather than just one. In general, look for monitors with features that make it easy to move about, such as a compact parent unit that clips onto your belt. Try it on before buying, if possible; antennas have been known to poke the wearer.

Factor in your phone. To minimize the possibility of interference, choose a baby monitor that operates on a different frequency band from other wireless products in your home. A 2.4GHz cordless phone and a 2.4GHz monitor can interfere with each other. The 2.4GHz frequency band is widely used for cordless phones.

Consider digital if you have nearby neighbors with babies. If you want to be sure the sounds transmitted by your monitor are heard only by you and not by neighbors who might have a similar model (or a cordless phone using the same frequency band), go with a digital monitor, not an analog one. This will also ensure that the sounds you hear are coming from your baby and not the neighborâs. Analog monitors operate on a particular frequency band, much like a radio, sending signals from monitor to receiver in a straight shot. Digital monitors, on the other hand, encode the signal as it travels between the monitor and the receiver, making it nearly impossible for the sounds to be heard by others, and reduces the possibility of running into interference from other electronic devices. (Learn more about wireless interference.)

Learn the return policy. Before you buy or register for any wireless product, such as a baby monitor, be sure the store will let you return or exchange it, in case you canât get rid of interference problems. If you receive a monitor as a baby shower gift and know where it was purchased, try it before the retailerâs return period (usually 30 days) runs out.

WHATâS AVAILABLE

The major brands of baby monitors, in alphabetical order, are: Evenflo (www.evenflo.com), Fisher-Price (www.fisher-price.com), Graco (www.gracobaby.com), Mobicam (www.getmobi.com), Philips (www.hearmybaby.com), Safety 1st (www.safety1st.com), Sony (www.sony.com), Summer Infant (www.summerinfant.com), The First Years (www.thefirstyears.com), and Unisar BébéSounds (www.bebesounds.com). Prices range from $15 to $200 for audio monitors, $100 to $200 for audio/video monitors. The higher the price, the more features and frills.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Among the models we tested, the digital baby monitors are top-rated. Short of DECT technology, thereâs no guarantee against interference with either digital or analog monitors, although digital monitors are less susceptible and more private. One digital model in particular, the Philips SCD 589, is loaded with features, and since it operates in the fairly lightly used, for now, 1.9GHZ frequency band, itâs unlikely to pick up interference. However, at $200, itâs pricey. (See our full report on this model.)

If you anticipate interference and want to spend less than $200, buy a less-pricey digital model thatâs not in the same frequency band as other wireless products in your home, and consider models with more than two channels. The other digital monitors we tested were very good: The Graco iMonitor ($90) has two parent units; a similar version with one parent unit is available for $60. The Summer Infant Secure Sounds ($50) is a good choice for privacy, though, like the Graco iMonitor, it has fewer frills than the Philips SCD 589. See our full monitor Ratings (available to
subscribers
) for details.

We suggest avoiding the Evenflo WhisperConnect Sensa ($50). It has a Pet Sensor, which is designed to alert you to any unusual movement around your babyâs crib--a cat or other pet climbed in, say. That feature worked well, but you can easily keep pets away from the crib by closing the door to your babyâs room. In addition, we found that one of the three samples we tested had an annoying problem: The âout of rangeâ alarm would go off at random. This happened over and over again with that particular sample, and once or twice with one of the other two samples we tested.

The audio/video monitors we tested have small color screens, and unlike earlier models, reasonably good pictures. However, we found them to be susceptible to interference, particularly from microwave ovens in use. Some models, such as the MobiCam ($190), let you tape to a VCR or watch your monitor on the television set. But overall, we donât see much need for a video baby monitor.

Highest rated one was the Philips Digital SCD 589 for 200$, the next one right after that was the The First Years Digital for 50$.

When to quit using a baby monitor at night?

lovelylady

My DD is 4 month old. We dont use a monitor right now because she sleeps in the same room (1 bedroom rental house only 560sq ft) We bought a 1200sqft house and will be moving when she is just over 5 months old. My question is how long did you personally use a monitor for? We own one so its Ill use it for naps cause I could be anywhere at nap time in the house but her bedroom is right across from ours. Im thinking it might work best just to leave both bedroom doors open at night? Im sure we'll try it out either way and see what works but a little input is nice. Thanks.

Answer
My daughter will hit 5 months on Sunday, and we do exactly what you are talking about...her bedroom is across the hall from ours. I DO close both doors, becuase if she actually cries, I can hear her through it, but if she's just babbling, its not loud enough to wake me up (If i"m awake I can hear it).

The baby monitor sits plugged in in the living room, so that if shes napping and i'm watching tv, i can see it light up and hear her. Works perfectly!

Anyone else have a baby who talks to themselves at night?

LuvMyLife

My almost 5 month old has started waking up way too early talking to herself. She isn't crying but of course it comes through the monitor and she is just talking. Any ideas what to do? Should i just turn off the monitor because she is not upset...
I don't really mind her talking it is just that my poor husband has to sleep for work. I am a SAHM so it is not a big deal to me! I think it is so freaking cute just not at 2:30am!

Answer
Your baby is doing really good if she is already babbling at 5 months. Just let her be. She is practicing with her words and sounds. If you want to turn off the monitor that is fine, you will hear her if she gets upset. Or you could just lay back and listen to the sweet "stories" your dear one is telling you or the wall or the animals in the room. My 1yr old wakes up about 5:30 everyday and talks to the bunny in her bed. The more she practices the quicker she will learn her sounds and may start talking earlier.

It is such sweet music to hear our childrens voices.

I just upgraded from a 1st generation to 3GS. I want to take my old iphone and use it as an educational device for my son - animal pictures, kid's songs, kid's games, etc. I'd even like to use it as a baby monitor if it will still function on wifi. My AT&T dealer said not to hook it up to itunes because it is deactivated. What does this mean? Is the phone still useful?

Video baby monitor with ip capabilities?

Jack

Twin baby girls on the way and my wife and I are looking for a video baby monitor. I would happily throw down some more dough if they made a video baby monitor with ip capabilities so I can watch them at work. I would buy just a good ip camera but I cant find anything that can link a wireless handset to it. If there are any solutions without having both a monitor and then a separate camera please let me know. Thanks.
The ip setup isnt the big deal. The problem is that we'd like to set up a portable monitor (as seen with regular vid baby monitors) to use around the house. The home portable monitor would be the primary use, while the ip settings will be my selfish way to still be with all three of my girls =)~... Let me know if theres means to accomplish =) thanks.

Answer
I have heard of a friend-of-friend who uses the following setup as a dog monitor (to watch the dog from home via webcam) which might work for you:

1. wireless IP camera setup to view whatever you're after,
2. create a skype account to run at home,
3. set the skype account to use the IP camera for video calls and
4. set the skype account to auto-answer incoming video calls.

he can then video-call from his own skype account at work to the dog's account and see what's going on throughout the day. and the camera can be moved to a new location without moving the computer.

the catch is, you can't operate the panning of the IP camera via skype. if you need this, perhaps something like Team Viewer might be better - it's a remote desktop app free for non-commercial use, that will let you remote in to your home computer and access the IP camera controls that way (Team Viewer is REAL easy to use).

for your case, I suppose you'd want sound as well, so seek out an IP camera with mic (if you want to hear them) or with both mic and speakers (if you want them to hear you too).

**Edit** Oh, I see what you mean - you want a portable receiver unit with a screen to relay the video to. I had a poke around and came up with not alot.

I can find wireless cameras with receivers (usually 4 cams + 1 receiver) - ie. glorified baby monitors,
and I can find a couple of iPhone apps to receive a signal from an IP Camera (see links below), but no IP Camera portable receiver.

When will tmobile come out with the iPhone?

sockssoxs1

I have seen articles and reports that T-Mobile will carry apple products in the new year (2013). When can I expect to see the iphone 5 on T-Mobiles network?

thanks

Answer
I let my friend (coworker) who owns an iPhone 5 use my Note 2 just to compare, and showed him how to use it.

I then asked him why people prefer iPhone 5 over the customization that Android gives. He had no answer to that (he did attempt to say that the iPhone was simpler to use, and I described that the it was true that even babies could use the iPhone, but the Android only takes a day to customize to ones wants and needs), just that he never knew Android had gotten so good. He then offered to trade me his iPhone 5 and a gaming screen he had previously used for his triple monitor setup. I stoutly declined.

This sounds like I'm just trying to spite you because even if the events that I have just tried to describe are false (and they are not), they are impolite.

So I won't educate you on the benefits of the Note 2, and Android as an OS, and why I'm not here to start a war, but merely to inform you that iPhone is definitely starting to fall off as a feature full phone every generation. Every generation, the iPhone is declining. I won't speak of it anymore, and just try answering your question without killing myself over how much a tech geek like me needs to tell you how much better Android is. All you have to do is research and use google anyway if you wanted to know, right?

So about iPhone on T-mobile. You probably won't be seeing the iPhone 5 likely appear in next month. After that, they will be very eager to get the iPhone 5 if they truly are considering offering the iPhone 5 (they already offer the Galaxy Note 2, though... OOPS what am I saying?!?!). So around 3-4 months? Yep very likely.

But don't buy a phone on a contract. You will end up paying more. Do you wonder why contracts lock you in and lower the price on phones? It's not really because they want you to stay (well yes they do), but that they gain a better profit anyway. They lock you into a plan that is very bad compared to prepaid plans so every month you will be shelling out tons more money for tons less service. Let's say you pay $90 every month for the same service you get at $49... There you go. 2 year contract = 12+12 = 24 x 40 = 960. You will be shelling out an extra $960 along with the small fee you payed with the phone when you signed your contract ($200 maybe?).

See, I'm just trying to educate you on what choice you should take: prepaid.

Prepaid? Look at Straight Talk, Solavei, T-mobile Prepaid (hidden because they like you using contracts), there are many great options. Check them out.

Answer
Hanns·G HH-241HPB Black 23.6" 5ms HDMI Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 DC 15000:1(1000:1) Built in Speakers - Retail
Pros: Large enough for my needs, no stuck or dead pixels, arrived promptly. Has good color contrast and displays very little if any banding

Cons: Backlight bleed on each corner with a rather large bar of light along the bottom edge. Very distracting on dark scenes, with any LCD you can expect a bit of bleed (except those fancy LED backlights) but this is a bit of above average in my books.

Other Thoughts: Can't complain too much, for a monitor under $170.00 at the time of purchase, there wasn't much to expect.

SAMSUNG 2333HD High Glossy Black 23" 5ms HDMI Widescreen Full HD LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 DC 10,000:1 (1,000:1) Built in Speakers - Retail
Pros: Crystal clear Hd satellite picture. Beautiful Monitor picture.
HDMI cable included. A great value!

Cons: Stand was awkward to put in. Power plug did not have a secure connection . I called Samsung and they sent me a new plug without a hassle. No problems what so ever since then.

Other Thoughts:
1.This Monitor/TV is 1080P. It has its own tuner...meaning it is an HD TV OR a Monitor. This product is a "steal" at this price.
2.I have a set of Altec Lansing speakers with subwoofer hooked up and the sound is wonderful. This is not a $1000.00 TV.
3.If you expect the same don't buy it. But if you are looking for a Superb picture either as a TV or a monitor and 23" 's is large enough for your needs...BUY IT! I really wanted to give it a 5 but felt it wouldn't be fair since I had to request a new power plug from Samsung.

What are some baby items you couldn't live without?

Answer
*Portable changing pads---change the baby wherever you need to!
*My JuJu Be Prepared diaper bag---a HUGE, awesome diaper bag that has everything you need! It's even big enough to be an overnight bag if you need to catch a flight! NICE NICE diaper bag!
*Fisher Price Cradle Swing---it comes in different designs but it can rock from side to side or forward and backward, which is great if your baby is picky about what direction they like to be rocked.
*Bouncers are nice too!
*Pampers "Baby Dry" Diapers---hence the name, they really do keep your baby the dryest---there has recently been a newer kind of Pampers released that is supposed to be the thinnest, dryest diaper, but in my experience, those still leak more than Pampers Baby Dry. What's even better is that apparently the Pampers company doesn't believe that Pampers Baby Dry is as valuable as Pampers Swaddlers, because they are priced differently. For example, you can get a 120 count box of Pampers Baby Dry for the same price as a box of Pampers Swaddlers about 105 count. Works for me! And just so you know, if you join the Toysrus "RewardsRus" program, you can buy 9 value boxes of (the same brand) diapers and receive the 10th free.
*Halo Angelcare monitor---I worry so much about my baby, and this wonderful monitor actually tracks your baby's breathing and sounds an alarm if it no longer detects breathing. Great for parents that constantly worry about SIDS---let the monitor do the worrying for you. It's nice to know that if your baby stops breathing, the monitor will let you know.
*My "co-sleeper." It's this little half-bed for my baby that pushes into the side of mine. It's great because it keeps your baby within arm's reach throughout the night, but keeps them safely out of your bed to prevent suffocation. I LOVE this product!
*Halo sleep sacks. Don't worry about your baby being cold, or your baby suffocating under a blanket. Just zip your baby up in one of these sleep sacks and they are safely covered.

I guess there are a lot of things that I can't live without. :)

Savannah monitor time!!!!!!!!!?

schanookie

O.K. i have decided after much thought that i am getting a Savannah monitor to add to my reptile family.

i just want some experienced owners opinion's.

set up

when its a hatchling (when i buy it) or possibly slighty older. I'm going to start it off With a 15 gal tank. Nice big hide and nice big water dish.
UVB
75 watt spotlight basking light
and Cypress mulch or reptile carpet.

when it almost gets two feet its moving on to my spare 40 gal critter cage. and when it hits just about 3 and a half or 4 feet of he/she goes to a costume made house. dint worry im good at that part have costume cages for iguana and bearded dragon.

Diet
well as a baby its gonna eat lots of crickets meal worms and small pinkies. when it hits like 2 feet it will eat larger mice XL crickets and possibly feeder roaches, eggs, lighty cooked ground Turkey, and some boiled chicken pieces.

and fruits!!!

but im not entirely sure what kinds of fruits are best can recommend some.

Tame?

well im expectingg it to be a lil feisty in its younger years. but i will do my best to tame it, is that part hard? is your sav tame?

well is there any thing else im missing?

thx for taking the time to read this 10 points for best answer hands down

Answer
Never give a Savannah Monitor fruits, they are not Crested Geckos or Gray's Monitor. I'd prefer to give hard boiled eggs with the shell because it's less messy and has extra calcium. I'd only give pinkies every 2-3 weeks for babies and rats/mice once a month for juveniles and adults because they are very fattening. Give them raw or boiled turkey, never fried, grilled, bake or broiled. Taming is really easy if you get them while they are babies, just handle them daily, hand feed them, walk them and give them treats while you play with them.

Can i keep two different baby monitor species in the same tank temporarily?

Exact

I currently have a baby Quince Tree Monitor in an 80 gallon terrarium and i'm getting baby Black Throat Monitor tomorrow but i don't have a terrarium for him yet. I was wondering if i could keep these two babies together (If they get along) until i find a suitable cage for my black throat. Let me know!
P.S. There are tons of videos on youtube that show different monitor species interacting.
Thanks!

Answer
Anything is possible. But, monitors are usually territorial. They might not get along. You just have to try it out and see how they react to each other. Try putting them next to each other with a pane of glass between them and see what happens. Even if they don't fight you might have other problems. Black throats get stressed easily and sometimes won't even house with other black throats. Stress will cause all sorts of problems. Not eating, bad sheds. you just need to experiment. I would be surprised if it works. I assume, if you have done your research you know that a black throat will grow a lot faster then your quince. Raised properly he will be much larger within months. So don't plan on this being for very long.

Has anyone used a video baby monitor?

Pregnant w

How do they work?
What are the pros and cons?
I am thinking about buying one that you can have two monitors and see two rooms at once and was wondering how many people prefer it.

Answer
Congrats on baby #2!

I couldn't live with out my video monitor!! I have the Summer Infant Day & Night Handheld Color Video Monitor. The picture is so clear both at night and during the day. I love being able to check on my baby with out waking her. I don't even have to get out of bed unless she really needs me! I think if I only had the audio, I would have been getting up a lot more often to investigate every sound, especially during the first few months. The handheld part has a button on top so you can turn off the video screen if the light bothers you at night. Then if you hear something you feel you need to check on, simply click the button and the video comes back on. I read the reviews for this product. Many people say they could not get a signal. I never had a problem. I also read that they can interfere with wi-fi. My husband is a web developer... he never would have allowed wi-fi interference!

I highly recommend this monitor to all my friends. The only con I can think of is that I have had to change the channel due to static. Seriously, it's a flick of a button and I've had to do it maybe 3 times in 7 months. No biggie! I know you can get an extra camera for this monitor, but I don't need one yet. Here is what one person commented: "We bought a second camera to go with the monitor we already had. I love being able to switch back and forth between my two kids' rooms. Only issue is if the monitor is too close to one camera, you can have interference when trying to check on the other one."

newborn baby checklist?

Ashley Kas

so i am a young teen mom well soon to be mom and me and my boyfriend were wondering if somebody could give us a newborn baby check list so we know what to get for our little baby we do not know if its a boy or girl yet please help us also if you have some new parenting tips for how to take care of a newborn baby plz feel free to give us your ideas we need all the help we can get

Answer
Being young I'm assuming you're not rolling in money ;) There are many "essentials" that you really actually don't need. A change table is handy and comfortable, but not necessary. You can lay the baby on your bed or on a rug on the floor for nappy/clothes changes. Unless you're living in a big place, you probably won't need a baby monitor. We've got a decent 3 bedroom home and bought one when we were expecting our first, but really, the baby cries loud enough for you to hear them anyway. Don't buy too many toys, if any at all. It'll be a long time till they'll even notice them, in which time others may have given them as gifts or you may have had their first Christmas when you can buy them for them. "Baby" towels are nice if you can afford them, but otherwise an adult towel will still do the exact same thing.

-A good stash of newborn size nappies (in case you don't want to go to the shops for the first week or so)
-Baby wipes (don't just buy the cheapest you can find, because they probably won't work. They'll be ridiculously thin and dry out as soon as you open the packet - found this out the hard way. But you also don't need the most expensive and fancy ones either.)
-Not sure what climate you live in, but have a few jumpsuits and other clothes in both size 0000 and 000 (if you see them on special) because they'll probably fit in the 0000 and you want them ready to go, but they might come up as big bubbas and need the 000. DO NOT take any tags off until you're about to dress them, that way what doesn't fit/get used and can be taken back for a refund (if you kept the receipt) or you can swap them for clothes that do fit.
-Plenty of cloths and/or bibs for wiping up baby spew
-2-3 baby wraps (I would go with muslin in case your baby is born during warmer weather and you still want to wrap them. If where you live is cold, you can always warm them up with an extra blanket or warmer clothes under the wrap)
-2-3 baby blankets
-cot
-if baby is born in colder weather, about 2 beanies to keep their little head warm
-a pair of mittens is good to keep hands warm and prevent their nails scratching them, but not really necessary if your budget doesn't allow for them.
-Baby bath wash (my favourite is Johnson & Johnson Top to toe)
-Baby powder and nappy rash cream (you don't want to only buy these once your baby has a rash, you'll want them handy so you can deal with it immediately and not have to wait till the next time the shop is open)

For you - plenty of maternity pads and breast pads (if you run out and send your boyfriend out for more, you should give him the packet to take to the shops with him so he comes back with the right ones).

Parenting tip - ask everything! No matter how silly it sounds, if you're unsure, ask. And be specific if you need to be. Good luck :)

Baby Heart Monitor?

Q. I bought a baby heart monitor, I don't know if it was because it was cheap (20 dollars), but it said that i would be able to hear kicking and hiccups and stuff. I am only 4 months pregnant and it says you wont be able to hear the heart beat until 5. I was just getting ansy and wanted to make sure everything is still OK. We tried it on my belly and I heard lots of noises, then we tried it on my boyfriend and heard the exact same noises. Do they even work??
After reading your answers I guess my 20 dollars could have been better spent on CRAVINGS!

Answer
yea-some of them dont work until 8th or 9th month-it really just depends on how strong your babys heartbeat is.
and you have to be very precise & know exactly where baby's heartbeat is to actually find it .

9 times out of 10--the heartbeat you are hearing is your own.
next time you are at your doctors and he/she checks for baby's heartbeat-try to remember exactly where he heard/found it

personally I think they are a waste of money
you could always take yours to your next appt though and if the doctor or nurse has a free minute--ask them if they can find the heartbeat using whatever monitor you got.

I can find wireless cameras with receivers (usually 4 cams + 1 receiver) - ie. glorified baby monitors,
and I can find a couple of iPhone apps to receive a signal from an IP Camera (see links below), but no IP Camera portable receiver.

what type of camera is a spy camera?

iman a

im looking for a camera that you can put in one room and in another room you can see whats going on the place you put the camera in, actuallly i need it because my sister shes disabled eats all the food in the kitchen and i stay in the bedroom and cant watch her. her and my dad stay in the living room and my dad never watches her going into the kitchen. she eats all the meat cooked. i couldn't buy a lock for the refrigerator because i dont want to deal with opening it all the time it should be easy access. so what type of camera can do that like spying in another room

do you guys know any iphone or ipod apps that can do just that like download the app on your ipod that has a camera and put it in a living room and see the recording on your computer or something

Answer
Interesting question. You have two basic options.

1.) Video Baby monitor: Some can be used over the internet to monitor your kitchen anywhere, anytime. Can be wired or wireless. It's powerful and most mothers use it nowadays. Downside is, it's not discreet and once your sister knows it's there, she can find a way to evade it.

2.) Video Spy Cameras: Your best shot. They are covert, can be hidden anywhere. You can easily find wall-clocks with hidden cams, flowerpot, tissue box, even a tape recorder. I bet you can also find microwave oven with hidden cams, so many more.

Of course there are other options but these two are the cheapest options you can get.

What is the best baby monitor and car seat for newborn?

green thum

Answer
Car Seats:

The ones I would recomend are Britax Companion, Graco Snugride, and Graco Safeseat.

The Britax Companion is Rated #1 on Consumer reports. It is made in London and thus adhears to European standerds (they're a little bit higher then American standerds). The Car Seat can hold a child up to 22lbs or 30 inches long (whichever comes 1st). The actual carrier itself weighs about 10 lbs. The car seat has a rebound bar on it to avoid the cacooning of the child in a car accident.

The Graco Snugride is a very basic design. The carrier weighs 8 lbs and can hold a child up to 22 lbs or 29 inches long.

The Graco Safeseat just came out this year. It weighs 10 lbs but it can hold a child up to 30 lbs or 32 inches long which should get you at least through the first year (the other two will on average get you to about 9 months).

Some people like Evenflo infant car seats but I don't because I feel like the erganomic handle makes it harder to carry as the child get's heavier.

Monitor:

Avoid Fisher Price. They break a lot. I would say the Sony 900mhz 27 channel monitor. You will avoid a lot of interfearance.

Hope this info helps :-)

what will i need for my newborn?

claridy

i need a list of things ill need for my newborn. shes due aug 24th. we have collected a few things from friends and ffamily but need a list of everything well need so i can make sure we are ready for her to come home. if you could list the things ill need id really appreciate it!

Answer
well, u can go to babies r us website and they have a list for ppl who are going to register..of course it has a lot of things on there that you don't need, but if you weed through you can get what you need out of it...the things i liked;found most useful, etc......

.i would def recommend:
a diaper genie 2; idk why ppl don't like them, there is NO smell in my dd 's room
changing table..will save your back, good for diap changes, clothes changes, sponge baths, etc and you have shelves to store your new baby must haves....i have canvas bins on the shelves to store things that are good to have in reach or easily available...
monitor--i like the graco imonitor, recently bought a second one for another room in the house bc i liked the other one so much, it has been working well for over 8 mos now, and it has good range, battery life, and i can hear EVERYTHING; never any interference....it works great..
boppy pillow with cotton covers, soft ones don't fit as well for some reason
lots of baby hangers, and baby hangers with clips to keep outfits together
primo euro bathtub
prince lionheart diaper depot and wipewarmer; ours works well and the wipes are still very warm when we get them to out dd's bottom; and she doesn't freak out when we are out and they aren't warmed, but seems to appreciate it when they are..
health kit: brush, comb, thermometer (not an ear one, not as accurate), nail clippers, etc.
baby meds, generic is just as good and a lot cheaper...desitin(or plain zinc oxide if you can find it)..not creamy, has less zinc ox in it....infant mylicon and tylenol
lots of diapers , make sure wherever you buy them will let you exchange them for a diff size if you need to even after the return period...brus let me do that, and buy a small pack of a couple brands to see which you prefer before you open the big boxes...wipes, lots of them, without alcohol or fragrance! we use swaddlers diapers and pampers sensitive wipes; no rashes, no reactions to their ingredients, diapers hold a lot when they have too and the netting tends to keep the wet off her bottom...
lots of baby washclothes, you may have to use them on baby's bum if it is really sensitive and gets a rash....and baby towels, but you could use your reg towels if money is an issue

swing, pref swings two ways and plugs in instead of batteries
bouncy seat
infant travel system! easy, easy, easy--we got the graco tour deluxe; it is great, folds with one hand, several seating positions, lays flat for sleep; has a big basket underneath and cup holders for mom and dad, one for baby , place for snacks for baby, and a 'pocket' up top for keys, cell phone, whatever you wanna put there...
play yard, get one with bassinet feature if you want to, easier to keep baby in your room for a while before putting them in crib in their room=we have chicco discovery and it is awesome, has more padding than most, easy to wash..machine wash, most are wipe down...very sturdy, has nightlight, vibration, etc and a flip up change table, has wooden slats that slide in under mattress for support...not that much more exp than the others and much better in my opinion
passys--she loves soothies and that is all she will take..
baby wash, again frag free, dye free
frag free , dye free laundry detergent
clothes hamper or basket
lingerie bag for socks, mittens, anything little so they don't get lost in the wash...
something to put baby toys in
extra toy links
lullaby cd and small cd player; my dd has come to love white noise, she naps with a fan and a womb bear; sleeps at night with a fan....
oh, mosquito cover for your infant carrier..it's where you can see in , baby can see out, but strangers cant just walk up and touch your baby, and they will!!!!!
all i can come up with now...LOL
diaper bags; big one for everything you may need, leave in car unless you will be somewhere a long time, and a small one to stick what you will need for a short run in so you don't have to haul the bigger one

if ffing:
avent formula dispenser; has better review than the ones made by sassy, and convert to a snack cup later...i loved it so much i bought a second one!
bottles--really liked playtex ventaire advanced when she was young, more pieces but it's easy to get them clean when the top and bottom comes off...and they vent through the bottom instead of the nip so no bubbles or foam going back up into baby's milk; they will leak if you don't put them together correctly, but we have had no probs with them and have never had to replace any parts on them..if u decide on them and have leaks, email me and i will explain how to keep them from leaking...:O)
bottle and nip brushes--i really like the ones by munchking that don't have a sponge on the end of the brush, they come in diff colors mixed with white and have a great nip brush in the handles....
drying racks--again, i really like munchkins...
formula mixer: i like dr brown's formula pitcher bc you don't shake it it is only abo

Baby breathing monitor?

Emma's Mom

How many of you mommies have bought any of the monitors on the links below?? Do they work good?? Not too many false alarms?? Would you recommend those ones or another brand??

http://www.target.com/Angelcare-Movement-Sensor-Nursery-Monitor/dp/B0000CEDRO/sr=1-2/qid=1234758095/ref=sr_1_2/190-7478296-6555765?ie=UTF8&rh=k%3Amonitor-angelcare&page=1

Answer
i have 2 of them....i LOVE love love them. our master bedroom is upstairs, the kids room downstairs, and my husband works midnights. that monitor is that only thing that ever gives me piece of mind for sleep at night esp since i have horrible hearing.
they make a bunch of diffffernt kinds...digital ones, ones with room temp on it, ones with extra long sensor pads. i prefer the extra long sensor pads, and never get false alarms.

this was worth every penny, esp if you plan to have more kids...and the resell on them is great.

i highly recommend them. try it out, if you don't like it it than save the receipt and return it.

Car Baby Monitor?

Lauren G

Hi! I was watching "A Baby Story" and this couple had a monitor set up in their car. The camera hooked to the headrest in the back seat (for a rear facing child seat) and the monitor plugged into the outlet next to the radio. I have searched online for this, but I can't find it! Can anyone please help me?
Okay yes it is a video monitor. How safe is it for the driver to turn around and look at their infant in a rear facing child seat? My God, why would I want an audio monitor specially made for my car? That doesn't even make good sense. As for the mirror, I understand, but again with the having to turn around to look at the baby's face in a rear-facing child seat. I have googled the fire out of this one. I just can't seem to find it.
And yes maam, I did specify. I said "The camera hooks to the head rest."

Answer
http://www.safetyed.org/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=43

I found several cameras at this page...they arent exactly for your car but they could work in your car...the camera could be strapped to the head rest or back seat and the video is hand held so you can put it where ever you want to in the front. The one at this specific page is wireless. So it only takes a few batteries. Im sorry but I could not find more then that. Just in case youre interested they do have mirrors so that you can see your baby from the rear view mirror with ease. They are called Baby in Sight Mirrors. Please check out this web page also.

Has anyone conceived with a LONG cycle?

Jessica

I have a period cycle of about 45-55 days. It ranges from like 48 days one month to 47 the next month, or 50 the next month for example. Has anyone ever had this, and how difficult to get pregnant? How long did it take you to get pregnant?

No, I dont think I have PCOS, because I have none of the symptoms and I am completely healthy, I just have long cycles.

Thanks

Answer
I myself have regular cycles and have been trying for 4 cycles with no luck yet. On the flip side, I have seen people get pregnant in the first cycle trying when they have very long and even irregular cycles. Length of cycle has little to do with the success rate. The key is knowing when you are fertile. Generally, no matter the length of your cycle, you are most fertile 10-16 days before your next period. Try using a fertility monitor or ovulation predictor kits (OPKs). The monitor might be best since your cycle is not regular. It can be pricey to use the OPKs all the time. The monitor might be more economical... and it tells you exactly when you are fertile and when to use it to your advantage!

Remember that even the most healthy couple may have to try for up to a year to get pregnant, but most are successful in 6 months. Best wishes and lots of baby dust to you!

ball python cage setup?

Michael

so i want to get a ball python but i dont have any cage ideas. i want to get a baby and put it in a sterlite tub. i need help with what size up, heat tape, and all the stuff i need (hydropmeter, thermentor etc...)

Answer
Ball pythons are relitvely simple in their setup and care.
First of all the cage. A baby ball python will be fine in a ten gallon aquarium. As it grows you can bump up the size. An adult BP can easily and happily live out it's live in a thirty gallon aquarium.

Next you'll need a substrate. Aspen, coconut fiber, newspaper. Anything really makes a good substrate to keep you snake on. With one important exception: NEVER KEEP YOUR SNAKE ON CEDAR OF ANY KIND. Cedar is toxic to your snake. I personally recommend newspaper as it is cheap and easy to clean.

A good heat source is vital to your snakes health. Bps need a temperature gradient (as do all snakes incidentally). You'll need to maintain a hotside of about 88-90 degrees, and a cold side of about 78-84. This allows the snake to thermoregulate (Choose which body temp is most appropriate). You can use heat lamps to achieve this temp gradient. But an Under the tank heater (UTH) is much more economical in the long run, and doesn't mess with your humidity like a heat lamp would. Flexwatt is the most widely used because it's very cheap and very easy to wire up. Just make SURE you wire it to a thermostat so you can control the temperatures. I'd recommend a ranco prewired set.

Next you'll need hides, water sources and a way to monitor it all. Ball pythons are nocturnal by nature, so they appreciate good hiding places during the day. Make sure you have one hide on the hot side and one hide on the cold side so the snake never has to choose security over temperature. Next you'll need to maintain adequate humidity. Ball pythons need humidity levels in the low to mid sixties, remember they ARE from Africa. Put a water dish large enough for the snake to soak in if it desires on the cold side of the cage. To monitor it all you need a hydrometer/thermometer. Digital kinds are the best. Walmart sells Accurites, which are good. Put the unit itself on the cold side and the probe on the hot side to accurately tell temps.

Once you've got space, hides, temps and humidity downpat, then you can worry about feeding. I've heard a lot of people say BPs are picky eaters. As long as you meet their requirements, nothing could be further from the truth. Most BPs will readily take frozen/thawed (F/T) mice or rats their whole lives. Only in rare circumstances should you have to feed live. As a young Bp, you should offer food every 5-7 days. If your snake eats, leave it alone for at least 24 hours before you handle. If you handle too soon, it could lead to regurgitiation. As your snake ages, you can switch to every 10-14 day feeding schedule.

On shedding/problems:
Periodically, your snakes colors will dull, his/her eyes will go misty and their belly will turn pinkish. This is a sign your snake is going into shed. You should immeadietly bump humidity about 10% above what you normally keep it. Leave it that way until your snake actually sheds. Keep in mind that the shed conditions will clear up a day or two before the snake actually sheds, so keep the humidity elevated until you actually see the old skin in the cage with it.

Occasionally, or when you get the snake you may notice little bugs crawling around on it, or little black pepper like dots in it's water bowl. These are mites. They are tough to get rid of, but it can be done. Go to www.pro-products.com and get provent a mite. Follow the directions to become mite free

Good luck and congratulations on your new pet. Bps are wonderful creatures.

Baby monitor for Middle East?

rooney

I live in the US and I want to buy a video monitor for family in Iran but I know the electricity is different. Can I still purchase it for them and purchase some apparatus that would convert the electricity?

Answer
after your purchase the monitor, see what the watts are so you make sure you buy a converter That is big enough for the usage the monitor requires, (you will need to get 2 converters as there are 2 parts to the monitor system)then look for the converter...you may also try to buy a monitor from amazon.com.uk they would have 220v appliances and no converter would be needed. or look at other European websites for monitors. Good luck with this

What is a good monitor?

Austin

What kind of monitor should be a good pet that wouldn't mind being touched and tamed?

Answer
Most of the medium and large monitor lizards, if you get them as babies, will become tame.
The small monitors and the arboreal species (tree dwelling) don't tame down so well.

If you have not kept monitor lizards before then consider a Savannah [Bosc's] Monitor lizard. They are relatively cheap to buy, tame-down well and are quite "tough" when older.
The main problems with them are that they are very greedy and can quickly get obese and, unless they are given excellent exposure to ultra-violet light and lot & lots of calcium they tend to get metabolic bone disease quite rapidly.

You need a considerable $$$ outlay on equipment for any type of monitor lizard:
Glass is not a suitable material to use for keeping high-temperature / desert living reptiles in !

You need to start with a 36" x 15" x 15" wooden vivarium with glass sliding doors for Monitors, something like this:
http://www.petspantry.tv/acatalog/vx48walt.jpg
and progress to a 60" x 24" x 24" as they get bigger.

Wood has better heat-retaining properties and will also stop your lizard having too much humidity in the enclosure. Glass tends to cause chest infections & skin conditions due to condensation and lack of ventilation.

Heating should be provided by a roof-mounted 100 watt or 150 watt ceramic heat emitter:
http://www.petsolutions.com/images/Products/15522044.jpg
or a reptile radiator:
http://reptilekeeping.co.uk/images/eurorep/Radiator72.jpg

connect either device to a thermostat set at 75ºF. The probe should be sited 3" off the floor at the opposite end of the vivarium to the heater [the cool end].

It is ESSENTIAL that the heater is protected by a mesh guard to prevent your lizard burning itself:

or
http://www.customguards.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/wpsc/product_images/reptile-radiator-guard-white.jpg
Day-time Ultra-Violet light, "normal" light and basking spot heat should be provided by a 160 watt mercury vapour UV & Heat Lamp such as the Zoo Med PowerSun lamp. This should also have a guard over it and switched on from 12 to 14 hours a day.
