Why does WIFI lose quality and speed the longer you stay on?

best baby monitor android image
Q. Seriously, I'm computer retarded and just wondering why it does that. It goes from 54mb/sec to 10 or less sometimes.

Answer
If you speed is dropping then it is nothing to do with how long you have been connected it must be down to another problem.

Generic advice for improving wif reception [you give no info on the router or what device you are connecting with]

To start with the basic rule is to position the wifi router as high and as centrally as possible in your house.

1] Try changing the broadcast channel from the wireless setup interface for your router/modem.You can normally access this by typing "http://192.168.0.1/" into your browsers search bar and then look for the wireless settings menu.
You don't say if your router can use the 5GHz frequency or just the 2.4GHz. The best channels in the 2.5GHz spectrum are 1,6, 11, or 13 as they have less overlap with the other channels.

There is a useful article here about how to get the best performance by selecting the best channel.: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/21132/cha…

If you have an android smarthphone, or a friend does, then install the Wifi Analyzer app free from android market and use it to scan for the best channel and change your routers broadcast channel accordingly. This app will aslo show you all the wifi signals in range that your neighbours are using, so you can select a different channel to them, making a stronger signal for you. https://market.android.com/details?id=co…

2] You can use a tool like Nirsofts totally free WirelessNet View to look at all the local wireless signals that are within range and may be competing with your own router and interfering with reception. from here: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wireless_ne…

3] You can buy a Wi-Fi booster like D-Link 645 Smartbeam, here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/D-Link-DIR-645-W…
Devices such as these can actually boost the wifi signal by using multiple beams that bounce of the walls and are intelligently directed toward whatever device [smarhphone, laptop, tablet] you are using on wifi.

4] If your using the 2.4GHz frequency and not the 5GHz then other devices that use this frequency band can alsso interfere with your reception [eg baby monitors and microwave ovens use 2.4GHz]. Try and make sure that none of these devices are situated between your router and your wifi receiver eg laptop, tablet, smarthphone etc

Why is my internet so much slower on my laptop?

Danny G

I'm with virgin, both my computer & my laptop are connected to my via wireless connection. But my laptop gets but a small fraction of the speed my computer does.

Any ideas on how to sort this out?

Answer
I assume that although you say both the laptop and desktop use a wifi connection that they are not situated in the same place. It is likely that the signal strength will vary in different positions in your house. If the router supports the latest draft n wifi standards and so does the wifi adapter in your desktop then check that your laptops adapted supports 8011n too. If it only supports earlier wifi standards like 8011.g then this is much slower and the reason for the difference.

If the wifi chip in the laptop also supports the 8011n wifi standard then there are several things that can affect wifi signal and things you can do to try and improve things

To start with the basic rule is to position the router as high and as centrally as possible in your house.

Try exploring IP or internet camera, it include microphone and speaker for remote audio.

what are the wireless interference issues that could arise when you attempt to establish a wireless network?

Josh

And. What are the several options that could help alleviate the wireless inference issues?

Conduct an internet search using "wireless interference issues" to determine what causes interference and what problems arise as a result of interference.

Answer
Causes for wireless interference:

2.4GHz phones
baby monitors
microwaves
other wireless adapters running in ad-hoc mode

Ways to alleviate the problem? Remove the causes of interference by turning them off or move them further from the adapters.

If you had a spectrum analyzer, you could try and find each and every cause and try to eliminate it.

Sir Bartho

Im not talking about how long you are at work in a week. Im talking about how much time you are ACTUALLY working while at work.

Whats your estimate? What's your job title? Does your boss know you're a slacker?

Answer
I take care of my father and his business.
He had a stroke over two years ago, and I moved back to Canada to help when we were finally able to get him out of the hospital, he was there almost a year and a half. It's draining, but easier now. He can't talk or walk yet but he is better. I sleep with a baby monitor beside me, and sometimes I can't sleep because I'm afraid I won't hear it.
As far as WORK WORK is concerned, it varies. I take calls all day long and try to deal with issues over the phone, from home. Then other times I am at the office anywhere from an hour to all day, and some of those times it is just sitting there and other times it's non-stop work the entire time.
I used to be a teacher; 40 hours a week, full non-stop work as there was a new class every hour. I miss my students. Some still keep in touch, I think that is an honour.

what is the best age to wean a child off of breastmilk to food?

Q. also, do ihave to add cereal to it when he gets a little older?

Answer
1) You should breastfeed for a minimum of 2 years
2) You can begin non-breastmilk foods between 6-12 months, thought they are unneeded until 12-18+ months except for low-birthweight or preterm babies who should be monitored for zinc and iron levels.
3) No, cereal is junk food. Also if you can figure out where the cereal goes in your breasts go ahead and stick it in -but I'm pretty sure nature knows what she's doing.

Why Delay Solids?
http://kellymom.com/nutrition/solids/del...

http://www.askdrsears.com/faq/fit18.asp
No, you should wait until he is six months old, unless he is not gaining weight and your doctor advises you to start earlier. This subject keeps coming up, and the answer is still the same: the current recommendations (I didn’t make these up) are to wait until six months before starting solids. Starting foods too early can result in digestive or allergy problems later in life. We have learned that the old guidelines of 4 months are just too soon, and I am willing to bet that in ten years we will be recommending later than 6 months. But for now, the six month guideline seems reasonable. Click here, or here, to read previous FAQ's on starting solids or learn more by reading our Starting Solid Foods article.

WHY WAIT? 6 REASONS
http://www.askdrsears.com/html/3/t032000...

http://www.borstvoeding.com/voedselintro...
It appears that a baby's general development keeps pace with the development of his ability to manage food in his mouth, and to digest it. A baby who is struggling to get food into his mouth is probably not quite ready to eat it.

Pureed baby food is 'unnatural'
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/676279...
She said children should be fed only with breast or formula milk for six months, then weaned onto solids to improve control over how much they ate.

This could prevent babies becoming picky about food.

[...]

Solids best

After six months, Mrs Rapley said babies were capable of taking food into their mouths and chewing it.

Therefore, feeding them pureed food at this time could delay the development of chewing skills.

Instead, she said, they should be given milk and solid pieces of food which they could chew.

Mrs Rapley argued that babies fed pureed food had little control over how much food they ate, thus rendering them vulnerable to constipation, and running a risk that they would react by becoming fussy eaters later in life.

She blamed the food industry for convincing parents that they should give children pureed food.

She said: "Sound scientific research and government advice now agree that there is no longer any window of a baby's development in which they need something more than milk and less than solids."

http://www.borstvoeding.com/voedselintro...
The babies who participated in the research were allowed to begin at four months. But they were not able to feed themselves before six months. Some of the younger babies picked food up and took it to their mouths; some even chewed it, but none swallowed it. Their own development decided for them when the time was right. Part of the reason for this study was to show (based on a theory of self-feeding) that babies are not ready for solid food before six months. It seems that we have spent all these years working out that six months is the right age and babies have known it all along!

It seems reasonable to predict that if parents choose to provide babies with the opportunity to pick up and eat solid food from birth they will still not be able to do it until around six months. The principle is the same as putting a newborn baby on the floor to play: he is being provided with the opportunity to walk but will not do so until about one year – because his own development stops him. But: everything depends on the baby being in control. Food must not be put into his mouth for him. Since it is very tempting to do this, it is probably safer to recommend that babies should not be given the opportunity to eat solid food before six months.

http://www.borstvoeding.com/voedselintro...
Many parents worry about babies choking. However, there is good reason to believe that babies are at less risk of choking if they are in control of what goes into their mouth than if they are spoon fed. This is because babies are not capable of intentionally moving food to the back of their throats until after they have learnt to chew. And they do not develop the ability to chew until after they have developed the ability to reach out and grab things. Thus, a very young baby cannot easily put himself at risk because he cannot get the food into his mouth in the first place. On the other hand, the action used to suck food off a spoon tends to take the food straight to the back of the mouth, causing the baby to gag. This means that spoon feeding has its own potential to lead to choking – and makes one wonder about the safety of giving lumpy foods off a spoon.

Why not cereal?

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9646449/page...
Take rice cereal, for example. Under conventional American wisdom, it's the best first food. But Butte says iron-rich meat — often one of the last foods American parents introduce — would be a better choice.

Dr. David Ludwig of Children's Hospital Boston, a specialist in pediatric nutrition, says some studies suggest rice and other highly processed grain cereals actually could be among the worst foods for infants.

"These foods are in a certain sense no different from adding sugar to formula. They digest very rapidly in the body into sugar, raising blood sugar and insulin levels" and could contribute to later health problems, including obesity, he says.

The lack of variety in the American approach also could be a problem. Exposing infants to more foods may help them adapt to different foods later, which Ludwig says may be key to getting older children to eat healthier.

http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/solids...
Cereal is not at all necessary, particularly the baby cereals. Regular (whole grain) oatmeal is more nutritious for your baby.

http://www.askdrsears.com/faq/ci2.asp
The truth is, there is nothing special about these foods that makes them better to start out with. Babies don't actually even need rice cereal

http://www.llli.org/llleaderweb/LV/LVDec...
Meat provides additional protein, zinc, B-vitamins, and other nutrients which may be in short supply when the decrease in breast milk occurs. A recent study from Sweden suggests that when infants are given substantial amounts of cereal, it may lead to low concentrations of zinc and reduced calcium absorption (Persson 1998). Dr. Nancy Krebs has shared preliminary results from a large infant growth study suggesting that breastfed infants who received pureed or strained meat as a primary weaning food beginning at four to five months, grow at a slightly faster rate. Dr. Krebs' premise is that inadequate protein or zinc from complementary foods may limit the growth of some breastfed infants during the weaning period. Both protein and zinc levels were consistently higher in the diets of the infants who received meat (Krebs 1998). Thus the custom of providing large amounts of cereal products and excluding meat products before seven months of age may not meet the nutritional needs of all breastfed infants.
Meat has also been recommended as an excellent source of iron in infancy. Heme iron (the form of iron found in meat) is better absorbed than iron from plant sources. In addition, the protein in meat helps the baby more easily absorb the iron from other foods. Two recent studies (Makrides 1998; Engelmann 1998) have examined iron status in breastfed infants who received meat earlier in the weaning period. These studies indicate that while there is not a measurable change in breastfed babies' iron stores when they receive an increased amount of meat (or iron), the levels of hemoglobin circulating in the blood stream do increase when babies receive meat as one of their first foods.

http://www.westonaprice.org/children/nou...
Finally, respect the tiny, still-developing digestive system of your infant. Babies have limited enzyme production, which is necessary for the digestion of foods. In fact, it takes up to 28 months, just around the time when molar teeth are fully developed, for the big-gun carbohydrate enzymes (namely amylase) to fully kick into gear. Foods like cereals, grains and breads are very challenging for little ones to digest. Thus, these foods should be some of the last to be introduced. (One carbohydrate enzyme a baby's small intestine does produce is lactase, for the digestion of lactose in milk.1)

[...]

Babies do produce functional enzymes (pepsin and proteolytic enzymes) and digestive juices (hydrochloric acid in the stomach) that work on proteins and fats.12 This makes perfect sense since the milk from a healthy mother has 50-60 percent of its energy as fat, which is critical for growth, energy and development.13 In addition, the cholesterol in human milk supplies an infant with close to six times the amount most adults consume from food.13 In some cultures, a new mother is encouraged to eat six to ten eggs a day an

Well like during March, my mother was going to have a child but in the end it was self aborted. Then blood started to come out, and she couldnt keep her pee in. So the doctor was some crazy bitch excuse my language, and while cleaning her up she didnt let her pee. She told my mom oh i know you can keep it in, and if you dont keep it in im going to leave and do my next emergency. I was like mom cmon she doesnt care, can you hold it in please? The stupid doctor said haha ha i do care, ( LIKE THE EVIL DEVIL SHE WAS). The my moms likes she cant hold it, she cant hold it. It was like my mom was acting like a baby, and plus my mother didnt know english. Next that stupid woman saw in the monitor that her pee level was high and needed to pee. Then after so long she let her pee because the monitor said she had too. Like seriously lady? My mothers bleeding in that area and she needed to pee. Its august now, and this incident happened in March. Was this right for the doctor to do? If it wasnt cant I still sue her!
Im going to be 17 in september, i dont think im old enough to sue right?

Answer
Wow, that sounds terrible!

Well. Anyone can sue anyone, but whether you have a case or not depends on a lot more than what you posted here. Your mom would be the only one that can credibly sue in this case-- your case would get thrown out as soon as the judge finds out that you are not entitled to bring suit, unlkess your mom suddenly became your legal ward.

Well, you might have a case for emotional trauma, and can sue of you are an adult, but any award would be low as the doctor's attorneys will just show that it didn't affect you in any crippling way.

Also, without a likely "winning outcome" -- with a cash award, no attorney will help you unless you want to shell out big bucks in advance.

A better route is to complain to the medical board and the hospital board where this doctor practices. And go on facebook and any review sites and review the doctor.

You must be very careful to be clear and factual, when you state what happened. You do not want to get in trouble for slander or liebl (spoken or written defamation of a person). You can also give your opinion about things such as whether you would ever recommend the doctor to anyone.

My mind is so clouded that I can not think straight. Can you give me a clearer picture?

My husband is abusive. He is verbally, emotionally, & at times physically abusive. He was abusive while I was pregnant with both of our children. He was abusive after they were born. He would say things like:
you can't do sh** right
your a sick bi*** (had/have postpartum depression)
etc. etc. etc.
He is a very self-centered man. Everything is about him & he always has some sort of issue to attend to. We even had to focus on him while I was in labor. He was angry about something...
He makes it known that I am his problem. I am the reason that he is abusive. I make him this way. If he was with someone else they would appreciate him more. (We live in a big house. I work as a elementary teacher part time to keep the kids out of daycare.) He thinks that I should be more appreciative because he is one black man that hasn't left his family. But to tell you the truth, this is worst than him just leaving me. He is here but he resents being here. You know that "work" of raising children. But he wants to award of being here for his kids, but on the side he is taking out his resentment on me. Always talks about how much work he does with the kids, i.e. helping with bath, diapers, monitoring, etc. He enjoys nothing with them it seems.

It is so hard to appreciate him because he is so abusive. I can not see past the abusive things that he saids and does. That is why I am leaving. My children who are in the infant & toddler phase do not deserve to grow up in such a dysfunctional environment. I am a excellent mother. My 2 year old already knows her ABC, counting to 10, etc. etc.
Can I be causing him to be abusive? Or is he using the fact that I am weak with postpartum depression to make me feel helpless & guilty enough to stay?

Answer
Sweetheart...there is no way on earth that it is your fault that he is abusive. That is a choice he makes, every time he does it. He can stop, if he so chose.

He is using your weakness to control you and cover his own problems. You can never do anything that is deserving of any type of abuse.

You are doing the right thing by leaving. It will be very hard, no doubt. You're heart might hurt, you may think you did the wrong thing, you may feel bad because you "hurt" him. Let me tell you, you are doing the right thing, the pain will pass, and as far as hurting him...he should have thought about the pain he'd feel while he was inflicting your pain.

You are right that the kids don't deserve to grow up in such an environment. They will lead much healtheir, more productive lives if they are not afraid. Also, they will learn respect and how to treat others properly if they are not hearing and seeing daddy be mean and uugly to mama.

You can do this....your babies deserve it! And as far as being weak....you have 2 children, work, and put up with an abusive husband! I don't see any weakness there! You are strong enough to see what he does is wrong, that your kids deserve better, and you are leaving. That takes strength. Now, you will have to put "strong" into overdrive to make it after you leave him....even if just for a little while.

God bless you, I'll be praying for you and your babies! You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you! (Philippians 4:13)!

Answer
Bless his little tummy :) Serve foods that are packed with the nutrients he needs to grow healthy and strong, and limit the sweets as much as possible.

I continue to introduce new flavors and textures to my 2 year old daughter to help her develop a taste for healthy foods. She loves all types of fruits and most vegetables.

Here are some of the things she loves:

*Breakfast: Cup of a healthy Whole Grain Cereals mixed with sliced strawberries, blueberries or bananas.
*Lunch: Vegetable soup with a piece of whole-wheat bread (she specially loves broccoli cheddar soup), baked chicken with a side of cooked carrots & mashed potatoes, or brown rice with a medley of green vegetables are a few of her favorites.
*Dinner: Whole-wheat pasta with mozzarella cheese and zucchini.

Remember, as you continue to introduce various types of nuts to your son, it is important to watch closely for any potential allergies. I would also suggest you download our free app, as food recalls are unfortunate common events that can have serious consequences on your child.

Features of the Recalls Plus App include:
•Proactively delivers timely recall alerts for the items on your Personal Watch List (a personalized list of the brands and products that you wish to monitor)
•Hand curates every product and food recall directly from government agencies (CPSC, NHTSA, FDA, USDA) for relevance to children and consolidates them in one place
•Provides parents a simple, easy-to-use solution to track recall information and instantly share it with family and friends.

ideas for the iphone, opinions?

hi what do you think of these 2 ideas for apps on the iphone. one is a thing where it monitors a baby crying and then you input what that cry was about. for instance, your baby is crying one day and you figure out he wants food. you record the cry and say that is a food cry. then in the future you just show your iphone near a baby crying and it will tell you what they are crying for by measuring his or hers pitch and tone. another one is a shock thing, like in the arcade. you hold the iphone and get shock waves through your hand for however long, and send your high scores online and the person who gets the longest time holding it gets a prize or something. what do you think? also do you have any cool app ideas?

My sister is pregnant with her first child, and despite economic times I really wanted to get her something nice and memorable. I was thinking of a video baby monitor with a camera and television screen, so she could actually see what was going on with her child. I was also thinking of getting her one of those digital video cameras to tape some memories of her kid, parents love that.

I think each gift would be nice, but I don't know what would be a good one for me to get. What do you think would be a good gift?

Answer
Something practical would be nice. Honestly, out of the two options you gave I would go with the latter. I basic monitor works just as well (heck, if she lives in tight quarters, she might not even need one. Believe me, a baby will make sure you can hear it cry). Something like a baby swing would be nice, also. Or a bunch of things she will need like diapers, baby wipes, different baby medicines, etc.

What baby monitor do you recommend?

We are shopping for a baby monitor for our second child (our first is 6 now so we long ago got rid of her baby things). We plan to "room in" (have baby in our room in a pack n' play) for the first 6 months or so like we did with our daughter, so this monitor will be used primarily during naps and after the baby has passed the most critical SIDS risk phase. With that in mind, which monitor would you suggest and why? TIA!

I'm getting a new laptop, a Dell Inspiron 17, and I won't really be able to afford security software that you pay for. But I've heard that you can get good security software for free online. So what's the best legit security software that you can download for free?

Answer
Consumer Reports's top honors 2009 went to a free three-pack of Avira's AntiVir antivirus program, Microsoft's Windows Defender antispyware software and the Spamfighter antispam program.

Avira AntiVir
Its scans are flexible, allowing the user to fully scan both internal and external hard drives, run a preloaded scan--for rootkits, for example--or customize a scan. The latest version introduces antispyware protections, scanning tech that can crack open "locked" files, improved internal security to prevent AntiVir's files from being maliciously altered, and one-click threat removal--no more baby-sitting. AntiVir is still challenging to fully uninstall. Despite these hang-ups and the nag screen that follows definition file updates, AntiVir offers such effective protection and a well-rounded set of features that as long as the updates keep coming, it'll be our first line of defense.

Windows Defender is software that helps protect your computer against pop-ups, slow performance, and security threats caused by spyware and other unwanted software by detecting and removing known spyware from your computer. features Real-Time Protection, a monitoring system that recommends actions against spyware when it's detected, minimizes interruptions, and helps you stay productive.

SPAMfighter has partnered up with Microsoft to build the strongest, safest, and most effective anti spam filter on the market. If you use Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Mail or Thunderbird and you want to get rid of spam, just install SPAMfighter

I want to use my cell phone with my laptop as a baby monitor for my newborn so that I can set the laptop up with the webcam on the baby & then I can watch it on my cell phone. Something similar to Skype but not Skype because it won't work with my phone. At least I can't figure out how to. Thanks!

Answer
gmail has video chat similar to skype. but then like skype, you'd still have to teach your baby to hit the "accept call" button when you call into your laptop.

Is there any way to use my iPad as a remote baby monitor from my iPhone? Like pull up what the camera sees?

Tommy S

I would like to be able to pull up a live stream on my iPhone 4, from my iPad in a different room. Is this possible without a computer?

Answer
It would be best if you consulted with a person trained in natural medicines who would work with you and your medical doctor (MD).

Proper medical treatment as well as follow up to ensure the infection is completely gone is required.

What could be used and suggested for you, and must not be taken without consulting properly trained professionals are:
Herbal extracts or oils: African Potato, Angelica, Astragalus, Barberry, Bupleurum, Buchu, Echinacea, Garlic, Gentian, Goldenrod, Goldenseal, Kelp, Mistletoe, Milk vetch, Myrrh, Olive, Oregon Grape root, Pau de Arco, Red Clover, Sage, Saw Palmeto, Schizandra, Thyme, Tumeric, Wild Oregano

Other Supplements: Vitamin A, Acidophilus, Apple Cider Vinegar, Colloidal Silver, CoQ10, Cranberry juice (unsweetened), Vitamin C, B-Complex, Vitamin E, Yogurt, and the minerals Copper and Zinc.

Extremely high dosages of herbs and other supplements will be required to be monitored and administered by a professional. Do NOT administer on your own as some of these herbs can have dangerous effects if not used properly.

Besides herbal and nutritional treatments, other therapies may be required such as Acupuncture, Acupressure, Aromatherapy, Homeopathy, Reflexology, Traditional Chinese Medicine, as well as self-administered Douching.

Men may experience symptoms of:
Discharge from penis, Burning sensation when urinating, Burning and itching around the opening of the penis or inflammation or swelling in the testicle.

Women may experience symptoms of:
Abnormal vaginal discharge, Burning sensation when urinating, Bleeding after sexual activity or between menstrual periods, Lower abdominal pain, Low back pain, Nausea, and Fever.

A number of serious health COMPLICATIONS may result from chlamydia and these include:
Male infertility or sterility
Painful Inflammation in the testicles
Reiter's syndrome, also known as reactive arthritis: inflammation of the joints, urethra and eyes
Pelvic inflammatory disease
Long-term pelvic pain
Infertility in women
An ectopic pregnancy
Blocked Fallopian tubes
Early miscarriage or premature birth

Babies born with Chlamydia infections have eye (conjunctivitis) and lung/respiratory infections (pneumonia).

Chlamydia is simple to treat with antibiotics, either a single dose or a course lasting up to two weeks:

Standard Medical Treatment of Chlamydia includes:

Doxycycline 100 mg 2-3 times a day for 10-14 days, or
Zithromax® (azithromycin) 1.0 gm (4 x 250 mg) a single dose, or
Zithromax® Z-pak® (azithromycin) - 500mg on day 1, followed by 1 tab (250mg) once a day for 4 more days

To avoid re-infection, any sexual partners should be treated too.

Multi- Antibiotic resistance strains of Chlamydia trachomatis do exist; please see your doctor or visit a sexual health clinic to get re-tested.

Is anyone else aggravated with the world?

When you were young I'm sure your elders would shake their head with disappointment and say to you in some form "you're generation is hopeless, you'll never accomplish anything."

I look at today's youth and I'm completely astonished with the vial, inconsiderate and selfish things they do. Which is sad for me to say because I'm only 20, but the 2000's babies have really lost sight of reality.

I feel like the world has lost originality, people applaud inventions of the same "item" just made to be more convenient. Such as I-anything, literally every 6 months they release the identical item with an extra feature or two. Nothing is new, exciting or interesting. It's all predictable and we've become the slaves of the predictability. You never hear of people creating beautiful master pieces any more, or symphonies. Instead it's about who can twerk the best on instagram.

Speaking of the young being selfish, did anyone else see the story of the 13 year old girls that bullied a little girl to kill her self. "Which I do not pity suicide...but what one of the little girls said irked me." There was a statement posted on Facebook by one of the girls stating "Yeah I bullied her, and she died IDGAF (I don't give a f**k)." Children are going to schools, and shooting their colleagues. They are no longer intelligent, spell check is on almost ever device now and teachers encourage students to use a calculator more than ever. Did you know that the IQ level was dropped because the level of mental retardation has become all to common? Literally people have become so dumb, that we have lowered what is considered retarded now. THAT IS CRAZY!

I could go on for hours about this. But I feel as though I'm so disappointed in the way the world is headed and no one else cares. Share your opinion.

I'm going to end this note with a quote:
America has become a cruel and vicious place. We reward the shallowest, the dumbest, the meanest and the loudest. We no longer have any common sense of decency. No sense of shame. There is no right and wrong. The worst qualities in people are looked up to and celebrated. Lying and spreading fear is fine as long as you make money doing it. We've become a nation of slogan-saying, bile-spewing hatemongers. We've lost our kindness. We've lost our soul. What have we become? We take the weakest in our society, we hold them up to be ridiculed, laughed at for our sport and entertainment. Kids beat each other blind and post it on Youtube. I mean, do you remember when eating rats and maggots on Survivor was shocking? It all seems so quaint now. I mean, why have a civilization anymore if we no longer are interested in being civilized? I mean, nobody talks about anything anymore. They just regurgitate everything they see on TV, or hear on the radio or watch on the web. When was the last time you had a real conversation with someone without somebody texting or looking at a screen or a monitor over your head? You know, a conversation about something that wasn't celebrities, gossip, sports, or pop politics. You know, something important, something personal.

Answer
LOL!

I'm a bit over-40, and have a somewhat different perspective. Every generation thinks the previous is a bunch of bums. You write like a sharp person, they said that in the 1700s, too: read Gibbon's "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" sometime for a hilarious commentary on late 18th Century English society!

I swore to never be like my old man, or at least his bad side. Which thankfully wasn't "so" bad. Would that all kids could be so lucky, and I mean that very sincerely (RIP, Pops).

However, you'll be surprised: once you own property, have a family or other loved ones, understand how people really operate, and fully appreciate the level of insanity in this country and the world, you'll want to run and hide. So what you do instead is go with the flow, nod and smile, take the big fat check, and do whatever the hell you want anyway ON YOUR TIME, not their's. Work is a dictatorship and a police state, not a democracy. Build your own family, and community, best you can. Vote. And that's mostly it.

Now: as a Reagan-era Gen Xer, we were thought of as the me-me-me generation and slackers, too. Used to get that smarmy commentary from my mom a lot, she of the so-called Silent Generation (after so-called Greatest Generation). Now, we run the country, Gen X and the Boomers. We're doing a mediocre job of it, at-best. Your job is to do better, you and the Gen Y's coming into yours in good time.

Millennials...your generation...are harder to keep interested and manage. The old command-and-control way of management flies like a lead zeppelin. I spend a lot of time coaching and motivating those of the short attention span era. It is much harder to get someone's attention when everyone has a microphone to bleat out stupidity, too. Truth is, though, I don't care if you spend half the day on Facebook, as long as you spend the other half creating interesting and valuable reports, charts, and analyses. That you may do both, almost at the same time, is interesting and took awhile for me to figure out.

I do notice y'all are better-informed about certain subjects than Gen X were. Gen Y is in the middle. We came of age as the Internet got off the ground, I was much older than you when it arrived with gusto (1994-1995, in my observation, with Netscape 1.0 and easily-available dial-up at 28K. Just TRY to imagine what the Web was like then. Dare yah. I developed in Frontpage in 1998 a couple years).

What is very different is the access to networks and information, as you say. When Gen X wanted to bully the effete homosexual boy or oddball, plain girl with the lisp, "we" did it in person. It was no less right then vs. now, of course, but that's what kids do. Kids are ruthless and unsympathetic enforcers of subjective right and wrong.

Now, it doesn't stop at school. It's 24/7. I pity teens and tweens today, with access to sex, violence, and connectivity to God knows what in-general that dwarfs what I had. Hell, it's hard enough for me to handle now, as a mature adult. Back when I thought the rare Playboy, Penthouse, Hustler, and dealing with Mark the bully a year or so when I was 12 was a hot old time. Jeez. I didn't so much as log on to a computer until age 14, and I was one of those oddball computer-whiz kind of kids, "Wargames" style (and damn near just like that, too). I'd guess 40% of my graduating HS class never logged onto to any computer so much as once. An iPad would have been the wildest Star Wars -style gadget imaginable to us.

I wouldn't bet money IQ is declining across the board, over time, however. In certain groups, yes. Achievers will continue to achieve, we are definitely becoming more socially-stratified: wealth becoming wealthier, poor becoming more dependent on government that would screw up a one-car parade. In my HS graduating class, a couple went to Ivy League. Many went to top-tier public and private uni. Most went to mid-tier state schools (like me). The other c. 40% went into trades. A few went into the grass, dead from stupid stuff (coke or booze overdose) or bad luck. A (very) few also went to Club Fed or Jackson State Penitentiary for extended stays. Nothing new or interesting in that distribution, though: ends of the Bell Curve, my friend.

Since, I've worked very hard to live in a nice neighborhood, surrounded by fellow-professionals and other 3-percenters. Not the ghetto, surrounded by dunces on EBT and SNAP benefits and disability, living in poverty in all but name. The latter will be shut down one day, about one or two economic crises from now, at which time it will be open-season on people like me, I fear.

There's something for you to aim for: don't be a have-not, in the coming decades. The party cannot continue forever as-is.

Friend, take steps. If you can't save the world, save your corner of it. That's what I do, and concentrate on my family and community. My peers, direct reports, and executive management, I can influence. Can't change human nature. Stand for what you believe in, choose your words and causes wisely. You'll do alright.

How to interfere with a baby monitor?

Sounds cruel, I know, but it's not what you think. See, my grandmother is really fucking nosey and has a baby monitor hidden somewhere in our living room so that she can listen to the family talk while she is "sleeping". Personally, I can't stand it when people can't keep their nose out of my business and would like to put an end to this. Is there anything I can do or maybe something I could buy to block the signal? Help, please?

Answer
If it's a baby monitor, it can't be that small. Do a thorough search and find it. Then open it up, pry several components off the board and put it back. Or if you know where she keeps the receiver wait until she's away, open it and pry a few components off the board. Or tape the transmitter to a waste pipe so she hears every time a toilet flushes.

Answer
i'm not sure about the target ones but i was thinking about buying one from walmart and based on the reviews i read for it i'm unsure whether or not to go ahead and get it.
2 reviews said gave it good rating and 2 gave it bad ratings.

heres the link for the one i was looking at:
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5983010

its only $20 so i guess if it doesn't work it isn't too big of a loss. plus you can always return it.

if you do decide to get one make sure you read the reviews. they're very helpful.

so i couldn't be more of a help.

My aunt asked for a new baby minitor in her baby gift registry and I was thinking of getting her the Handheld Color Video Monitor from Target. Its $199.00 and I want it to be worth the money. Is it worth it? Anyone like it/dislike it? Please give me your opinions. I think it is really neat that you can see the baby and everything, but is it too good to be true?

Answer
I disagree with the above answer. We actually have a video monitor for our 6 month old son, and it's great! With regualr monitors, all you hear is the sound. You cant always tel whats going on just by the sound you hear. With the video monitor, you can hear the sound, and see what is going on as well. Sometimes, with just a regualr monitor, you will hear somthing strange, and run in to check it out, and it really be nothing. We had many false alarms becasue sound alone doesnt answer concerns.

The video on the monitor is actually pretty clear. On some, you can actually record on it too, incase you want to use it as a security camera!

Where can I find information on what are considered good baby products?

Mamamia121

I am trying to register for my baby. I am so confused. There are 5 different brands of infant/newborn bottles, 15 different brands of baby monitors, 3 brands of infant care products. How do I know which is the best? I am very overwhelmed. Please help.
None of my friends have babies. My sister-in-law has two children but they are 7 and 4. This would be foreign to her.

Answer
Ask friends, family, coworkers, etc. what products they like and dislike and why and that should help you make a choice. Be sure to save receipts and shop at "return" friendly stores just in case you find you don't like a product. Target tends to have nicer things but I find they can be a bit of a pain when returning things sometimes. Wal-Mart has a much more lenient return policy.

If you want to e-mail me questions about products you're unsure of I'd be happy to share my experiences with you. I have a 2-year old and a 6-month old and I think I've tried it all! I went through the confusion with my first and got a lot of things I didn't like or didn't use/need.

Good Luck!

Video baby monitor with ip capabilities?

Twin baby girls on the way and my wife and I are looking for a video baby monitor. I would happily throw down some more dough if they made a video baby monitor with ip capabilities so I can watch them at work. I would buy just a good ip camera but I cant find anything that can link a wireless handset to it. If there are any solutions without having both a monitor and then a separate camera please let me know. Thanks.
The ip setup isnt the big deal. The problem is that we'd like to set up a portable monitor (as seen with regular vid baby monitors) to use around the house. The home portable monitor would be the primary use, while the ip settings will be my selfish way to still be with all three of my girls =)~... Let me know if theres means to accomplish =) thanks.

Answer
I have heard of a friend-of-friend who uses the following setup as a dog monitor (to watch the dog from home via webcam) which might work for you:

1. wireless IP camera setup to view whatever you're after,
2. create a skype account to run at home,
3. set the skype account to use the IP camera for video calls and
4. set the skype account to auto-answer incoming video calls.

he can then video-call from his own skype account at work to the dog's account and see what's going on throughout the day. and the camera can be moved to a new location without moving the computer.

the catch is, you can't operate the panning of the IP camera via skype. if you need this, perhaps something like Team Viewer might be better - it's a remote desktop app free for non-commercial use, that will let you remote in to your home computer and access the IP camera controls that way (Team Viewer is REAL easy to use).

for your case, I suppose you'd want sound as well, so seek out an IP camera with mic (if you want to hear them) or with both mic and speakers (if you want them to hear you too).

**Edit** Oh, I see what you mean - you want a portable receiver unit with a screen to relay the video to. I had a poke around and came up with not alot.

I can find wireless cameras with receivers (usually 4 cams + 1 receiver) - ie. glorified baby monitors,
and I can find a couple of iPhone apps to receive a signal from an IP Camera (see links below), but no IP Camera portable receiver.

Baby monitor with camera?

Love

I'm having my first child in December and my mom and I are looking at baby monitors and we found on that had a camera and shows you a live image of the baby. My mom was pretty impressed by this as they weren't around when I was a baby. But they are outrageously priced! I think she wants to get one for me anyway, as this is her first grandchild and my mom's the type to spend way too much. So I was wondering does anyone else have these? Worth the price? Are they any good?

Answer
I actually did this, but I used a wireless ip camera. When my son was 9 months old we had to move from a condo to an apartment with no washer/dryer hookup. So I had to leave the apartment to do the laundry a couple doors down and needed a way to see what my son was up to in between loads. I agree that the video monitor setups are very steep. And something worth noting is that every single one I've seen on shelves is not a secured network. So that video signal is open for others to view nearby. I use(d) a dlink IP cam that is networked securely to my home wireless network and accessible via smartphone. It cost about 30 bucks and 15 minutes of setup and I was up and going. I've had this setup for almost 3 years now and it's been helpful. I don't think I've had any memorable absences, but it's a nice piece of mind to make sure my son was sleeping safely when I had to leave the apartment for a moment.

Whats a good baby monitor for a 2 story house?

Any dog trainers....I have a challenge for you...?

best baby monitor for hearing impaired image

I have a family member on my husband's side that is hearing impaired (along with his room mate). They just got a puppy not too long ago (A yellow lab). The dog is ALMOST completely potty trained, but is having urination accidents every now and then in the house. The problem is the dog doesn't know how to tell the owners when it has to go.

Does anyone know a simple way to train the dog to either nudge or send a cue to the owner that it has to go to the bathroom? I've heard of the dogs ringing a bell by the door when they have to go....but that doesn't really help them when they can't hear it.

Also I guess the dog has a barking problem, but the owners can't discipline when she barks because they can't hear her.

Any hints would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all!

Answer
For the potty training, have them pick up the dogs paw and hit their leg before leashing the puppy and taking it outside. This pup will soon learn that everytime it goes outside, it needs to hit the owners leg first. It is similar to the bell. You're training a behavior that produces a certain result.

With the barking problem, the only way to discipline is when they SEE her mouth moving like a bark. They can also use a baby monitor with the ligfhts, so they see when puppy is barking.

fish everyday?

preston197

hey is it unhealthy to eat fish everyday?ive heard different stories, ive heard its bad to eat fish every day and to just eat like 4 times a week, then I hear somewhere else its very healthy for you,not sure what to believe lol,can anyone give me their opinions?thank you

Answer
Fish has mercury in it which is really bad for your body, and can cause birth defects in children. While fish is good for you, you need to research which fish have the lowest mercury levels, and which fish are not endangered.

By the way, the guy talking about eating a can of tuna a day, don't listen to him. Tuna has one of the highest levels of mercury, and is dangerous to consume large amounts.

For fetuses, infants, and children, the primary health effect of methylmercury is impaired neurological development. Methylmercury exposure in the womb, which can result from a mother's consumption of fish and shellfish that contain methylmercury, can adversely affect a baby's growing brain and nervous system. Impacts on cognitive thinking, memory, attention, language, and fine motor and visual spatial skills have been seen in children exposed to methylmercury in the womb. Recent human biological monitoring by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 1999 and 2000 (PDF) (3 pp., 42 KB, About PDF) shows that most people have blood mercury levels below a level associated with possible health effects. More recent data from the CDC support this general finding.

Outbreaks of methylmercury poisonings have made it clear that adults, children, and developing fetuses are at risk from ingestion exposure to methylmercury. During these poisoning outbreaks some mothers with no symptoms of nervous system damage gave birth to infants with severe disabilities, it became clear that the developing nervous system of the fetus may be more vulnerable to methylmercury than is the adult nervous system.

For more information on fish consumption advisories across the country, visit EPA's fish consumption web pages.

In addition to the subtle impairments noted above, symptoms of methylmercury poisoning may include; impairment of the peripheral vision; disturbances in sensations ("pins and needles" feelings, usually in the hands, feet, and around the mouth); lack of coordination of movements; impairment of speech, hearing, walking; and muscle weakness. People concerned about their exposure to methylmercury should consult their physician.

Hope this helps! I've included links to this information, and a link to a mercury calculator. The calculator will help you determine how much fish you should eat in a week by what kind and the amount.

Take care :)

what can i buy now that will last the next few months (little things not a crib or car seat of course) that will last?

Answer
little things 2 buy as u go...girl or boy?

baby kit with thermometer, clippers, hairbrush, comb ,etc--some of these can be bought 2gether or sep

baby monitor
onesies
socks
receiving blankets (would only buy a few if u r having a shower)
baby washclothes/towels
passys
avent formula divider cup 4 when u r out and need 2 feed baby; can be switched 2 a snack cup later
if ff bottles
bottle brushes
drying rack
dr brown's formula pitcher--great 2 keep out bubbles instead of shaking
snuzzler
swaddle me, by kiddopotamus, only 10 bucks at babies r us--easier and baby cant kick out
bibs
couple thicker blankets
diaper bag
a few sleepers with material suited 2 your area--good 4 baby 2 wear at home if cooler, onesies better if it is warmer in your home
crib sheets
waterproof lap pads (gerber is my pref, carters didn't seem as well made)
waterproof mattress protector
if u will be getting a bassinet and/or play yard u can buy wp pads and sheets 4 them
and 4 crib, check out 'the ultimate crib sheet'
bouncy seat/swing--prices vary greatly and u could get them 2nd hand
boppy--good for feeding either way, holding, baby sitting in, tummy time
boppy covers--cotton ones are cheaper and they fit better
changing table pad and covers
bins or baskets to organize things under table
baby hangers, baby hangers with the clips for outfits
clothes hamper
diaper genie2
refills
small infant toys
teether toys
wipewarmer
diaper depot
baby meds--generics are cheaper and just as good--tylenol, mylicon for now
desitin regular, not creamy (more zinc oxide than anything else i can find)
frag/dye free laundry detergent and baby wash
don't buy too much formula in case u need 2 switch :)
play mat with a toy bar, prices vary greatly here too
mirror for baby in car so that u can see them in your rearview
sunshades for car windows
lingerie bag for washing those little baby socks
baby sleep sacks
hand mittens so baby doesn't scratch their face up
hats since it will be cold and babies esp lose a lot of body heat through their head
*not sure where you are, but when you buy up diapers, make sure that wherever you buy them will let you exchange them for a diff size if needed after their return period is up bc it is gonna be a while before you know exactly what size you will need the most of...i bought the huge boxes at babies r us bc per diaper they were the cheapest i could find and i asked and they said it would be ok to exchange and i had too and they let me, walmart will too, but they don't carry the big boxes..by buying the big boxes of swaddlers, i save a ton! i looked at the grocery store and luvs would be more expensive per diaper if i bought them there, i guess bc they didn't have the big boxes, but i have never seen a big box of those anywhere
if you are having a shower you may get most or all of this stuff at your shower, so if you are having one, i would hold off on things that you wouldn't want duplicates of that you can't return....some things, doesn't matter, you will use them eventually, others, not so good...alll i can think of right now...LOL, sorry for the book, but i hope it gives you some ideas, most aren't necessitites, but are really nice to have..good luck

How to care for baby turtles?

Tarra C

We have 2 baby belly slider turtles, whats the proper way to care for them such as what to feed them, how often to change the water, how often to feed them, etc.

Answer
See safe feeding list at bottom for food. If you have a good filter (see below canister filter) you will only have to do 20 % water changes once a month (adding water when needed) and break it down once a year. This also depends on size of tank. Certainly if it looks dirty clean it. A good link on filtration,
http://www.austinsturtlepage.com/Articles/filtration.htm Do browse the other articles for lots of other great info!!

You will need:

1.You need the biggest tank you can afford upfront. A good rule of thumb is 10g per inch of shell, so no a 10g would not be fine unless you have a 1in hatchling, but it won't last you long so it doesn't make sense to buy small. Sliders can easily grow 12 in or more with proper care! If you can't afford a large tank, there are other options, a kiddie pool, a preformed pond liner, a rubber maid tote etc. Turtle tanks / the side cut out is a waste of money. Also Sliders like deep water so fill the tank!

2. You need a UVA/UVB light the box must say UVB and it must emit at least 5% UVB but 10% is best.

3. You need a Heat/Basking lamp, this can be a clamp lamp from a hardware store for 5 bucks and a household bulb.

4. You need a Basking spot. This needs to be a place for the turtle to come completly out of the water to dry off and sun himself. You can use a log, a platform, a dock, a ramp, etc as long as the turtle can fit on it comfortably. Basking temps need to be high 80's low 90's.

5. You need good filtration. Turtles are messy. Shoot for 2x the gallon size but more is good too. For example if you have a 40g get a filter made for an 80g or bigger.

6. Submersible heater. Depending on where you live, you may need a heater, the water temps should be mid to high 70's if you cannot achieve this w/out a heater, then get one.

7. A thermometer so you can accurately monitor the temps.

8. Substrate, you may use substrate but do not buy gravel!! Turtles can and will eat it. Usually with dire consequences. A good alternative is river rock bigger than the turtles head upgrading if needed.

9. Decorations/plants (llive or real as long as not toxic see safe plants under food below) a place to hide. This are not absolutly needed but plants and other hiding places reduces stress.

10. A good herp vet. If you want to be a responsible pet owner, you need a good vet BEFORE trouble happens. http://www.anapsid.org/vets/index.html

11. Food, turtles need a varied diet and need to be fed in the water;

Hatchlings
Hatchlings should be fed everyday for the first year of their lives. They should be given as much as they can eat in 10 to 15 mins time or as much as you could fit into their head if hollow. You can feed them all of it at once or you can slit it up into 2 feedings.

Hatchlings tend to be more Carnivorous than adults, so make sure to check out the suggestions of live and protein-rich foods below for how to supplement accordingly. (Make sure you still give fruits and veggies at this stage!)

Juveniles/Adults
Once your turtle reaches the 4" mark, we recommend that you change their feeding schedule to every other day. Giving them greens or live plants in between.

Adults tend to become more Omnivorous, so make sure to check out the suggestions of fruits and vegetables below.

Vitamins and Calcium
You should supplement your turtle's diet with both vitamins and calcium, every third feeding or once a week. To give them vitamins many people will give them a Vitamin Bath once a week. You can also either soak the pellets in a liquid vitamin or dampen them and roll them in a powder vitamin before feeding.

It is recommended you have a light that supplies UVA and at the very least a 5.0 UVB output. The UVB is necessary for the absorption of calcium and vitamin D3. Turtles need both calcium and Vitamin D3 for strong bones and shells.

**Feeding Tip Feedings should be done in a separate container so that you do not have to frequently change the water nor the filter media.

Common Diet Errors

Feeding Cat or Dog Food
Despite what some pet store employees may tell you, turtles should not be fed dog or cat food (Sounds insane, but we've heard it!)

Pellet Only Diets
Pellets provide many benefits, but variety is key!
Supplement their diet with veggies, live foods and some fruits. Check out our safe list below.

Giving in to Beggars
Turtles will always beg whether you give in or not- they know you are the supplier of food!
Supplement between feedings with greens or live foods they have to chase to eat. ( Iceberg lettuce is a common filler that doesn't contain much nutritional value, but will keep them content.)

Safe Feeding List

* Spirulina-enriched Brine Shrimp
* Bloodworms
* Plankton

Live Foods (Carnivorous)
* Guppies or Rosies Reds (no goldfish they are too fatty and have very little nutritional value)
* Crickets (Gut-Loaded)
* Pinhead Crickets (for smaller turtles)
* Earthworms, Night Crawlers
* Ghost Shrimp
* Aquatic Snails/Apple Snails
* Slugs
