What are the essentials to buy for a newborn?

Donna C

My husband and I are going to be first time parents in 6 months - and we've noticed that the baby market is flooded with tons and tons of "must have" items. I'm wondering which of these items really are essential for our new born. We really don't want to buy things we don't need or would really appreciate having for convenience.

Any opinions or resources would be greatly appreciated!

Answer
I know how overwhelming it can be! People and stores act like if you don't get all of the crap... I mean gear then you aren't doing the best for your baby. The only things you need for sure are a car seat, diapers, sleepers and wipes... really thats about it... the rest is just extras. Now there are for sure some extras that make life better and I will tell you a few that I have found that are really used and some that really aren't.

Baby swing-- now this is one of those things that there are swings, bouncers, seats the whole lot and a lot of people seem to think that they need one of each.. I have found that this just isn't true. We had one seat when our first son was born and he hated it and if we wanted to put him in a seat of some sort we just put him in his car seat with some toys hanging from the handle and rocked it... worked great! When we were having our 2nd son we found a full size swing for a steal at the goodwill and bought it... good thing too because he loved it and also had to sleep sitting up and that worked great for it.. in fact he slept in the swing until he was 7 months.
Crib-- well unless you plan to have the baby sleep with you all of the time you will need some sort of crib or bed for the baby so thats pretty much it...
Crib bedding-- really is a waste of money because you don't need it and it can be a hazard to little babies
Change Table, wiper warmers--- big waste of time, money and space!! We had one with our first and I think it was used all of 5 times.
Stroller-- there are a lot of different ones out there but we had three favs... we got a travel system with the car seat and I loved that the car seat just clicked in and unlike the car seat only ones it worked after the baby was out of the car seat, we also loved our combi one because it folded down really well and was light (so small that we were able to run it through the luggage thing at the airport at security) so if you travel a lot this is the best by far, and our current fav is the phil&teds... it is a single and a double all in one so if you plan to have more than one it is cool to be able to add the second seat
high chair-- we waited until we started to feed our son to get one but ended up getting one that straps to one of our chairs because it saved space and was a whole lot less cash!
Jumper/waler/activity center-- we have a jumper one and both of our boys have loved it.. I pretty much pull it out when I put the swing away.. it's great to keep the baby entertained and out of stuff while you are cooking, cleaning and what not if they are crawling or walking.
bassinet-- are nice if you don't want to put the baby in their own room right away but with our first we borrowed one, our second we used the playpen one and with our third we got a moses basket that I put on my bedside table (it's really a big side table) I like them when the baby is waking up for night feedings when nursing because you don't have to get up out of bed but really if the baby is bottle fed you have to get up to get the bottle anyway
bottles-- we have used different ones with each of our children but pretty much found which one's they liked and got 6 or 7 of them... we pretty much use one bottle a day and wash it between feedings and then stick it in the dishwasher at night (I nurse and bottle feed and only nurse at night)
We don't use any of those sanitizer things or warmers.. if I want to sanitize the bottles I just boil them and we use room-temp tap water for bottles.
Nursing pillows and chairs-- I do have a boppy pillow and it is nice when the baby is little but a normal pillow works just as well but it is nice for the baby to lounge on.. I don't have a chair or stool but never really saw a reason for them because I just nurse on the couch or in bed at night.
Carrier--I really love my moby warp because I'm able to use it with my newborn but also with my 3 year old to carry them in.
Baby monitor-- I never had one... We don't have a huge place so if the baby is in their room I can still hear them when they cry... I find that people tend to get up a lot more if they have one because every little sound the baby makes they jump.

Toys and clothes... now a lot of people go over board with these but pretty much I try to have about two weeks worth of outfits and toys get given as gifts a lot and newborns really could care less... they are more like 4 months and older things..
I hope this helps a bit and congrats on the baby!!!

Is it hard to work at McDonalds?

Jude Ulyss

I just turned 16. And I want to work at McDonald's this summer. So can you people tell me if it's hard to work there. Tell me a story.

Answer
It's not hard work as long as you have good coworkers, a good boss, and good shoes.

I worked at a McDonalds for 9 months last year. The job itself is easy, as long as you can deal with the fast pace of taking orders, bagging orders, and handing them out. But most McDonalds are equipped with modern technology that makes it very easy.

The hard parts about working at a McDonalds have to do with the social side of things. My managers were very angry, mean women. They demeaned my fellow co workers and myself, they would never say good job and only pointed out faults. And they brought their home drama to work, constantly having yelling matches with their husbands over the phone. My coworkers were irresponsible, and didn't always do their job. My managers were also cheap, and wouldn't give us our 10-15 minute breaks which are required by OSHA if you work more than 2 hours. So I would work at least 4 hours in a row non stop. They didn't even let my pregnant co worker take breaks, and she almost had a miscarriage because of that. She ended up quitting, and all of the problems her baby was having dissappeared in a week because she was no longer at that job.

It can also be difficult because you are required to be nice, friendly and helpful towards people who can often treat you like trash. Some people who go to McDonalds think that just because you work in food service, you are simpleton, and it is very hard to not give them a good tongue lashing and put them in their place. It is also hard to see how the food is made, see the unhealthy ingredients, and then be the person who hands it to somebody to ingest.

I had a mother come through and order a big mac meal with a milk sake for her two 10 year olds. She then told them that they couldn't eat it until they got home. I looked concerned and she told me, "OH we're new to diabetes! So they can't eat their food until they have their insulin shots!" I wanted to reach out that window and strangle her neck for basically feeding poison to her diabetic children. There was a Subway one block down the street. If you care at all for other human beings, it is hard to give them McDonalds food and have a good conscience.

Eventually I just wrote to OSHA and tattled on them. Now the employees are required to take breaks, and the managers are monitored so that they never do that to employees again.

But yeah, the job itself is not hard. And not all bosses are gonna be shits like mine.

Replacing a Netgear cgd24g wireless cable modem gateway?

gerry

This unit keeps dropping the wireless signal. I unplug cable to unit from desktop and replug it, wireless often works, but not always for long. This Netgear unit came from the cable company. I was under the impression that my new HP Omni desk top had an internal modem and the Netgear was just acting as a router. Do I need just a router or another modem-router? I'd like to buy the right equipment to solve the wireless problem and send this unit back to Charter. I appreciate any insight you might share.

Answer
Two types of Internet devices are commonly sold.

1. Combination modem / routers, often called gateways.

2. Stand alone routers which can be connected to a stand alone modem.

DSL and Cable modems use different technology, for this reason you can't use a cable gateway (DOCSIS) with DSL or use a DSL gateway (ADSL2+) with a cable Internet connection.

The Netgear CGD24G is a cable gateway. http://support.netgear.com/product/CGD24G

A gateway is a combination modem and router in one enclosure.

A highly rated DOCSIS 3.0 cable gateway is the Motorola SBG6580. It is currently about $120 at Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0040IUI46/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=excharge-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0040IUI46

You could also buy a standalone cable modem and connect it to a separate wireless router.

You don't have to buy your modem, router or gateway from your ISP, you can get one from a local retailer such as BestBuy or Fry's or online from places like Amazon.

As far as the brand goes, the brand is not as important as the model. Some manufacturers release a good model but the next is crap. I would look at the Amazon reviews of models that interest you. Even if you don't buy from Amazon the reviews will tell you a lot about which models to avoid. Look for at least 20 or more reviews with at least a 4 star rating. Read a few and see if they sound like the particular model will work for your application.

Most cable Internet providers use the cable modem's MAC address to activate the modem.

You'll have to call your cable provider with the MAC of the new modem so they can activate it on your account. The MAC address is usually printed on a sticker attached to the modem.

That being said,

No desktop is going to have a cable modem. It might have a dial-up modem, though most newer PC's don't include one.

Many newer PC's do include WiFi and Ethernet adapters and this might be what you are referring to.

Here is how it works,

Your cable modem connects to the Incoming coaxial cable and provides Internet (WAN) access from your ISP.

This WAN connection connects to a wireless router, In your case, with a gateway, the connection is internal.

A router connects two separate networks and manage the traffic between them.

In most home network applications the router connects your local group of computers and devices known as the LAN with the Internet, commonly called the WAN or Wide Area Network.

There are usually 4 LAN ports on the router to connect PCs and other devices via Ethernet cables if need be.

A wireless router enables you to provide wireless (WiFi) Internet access to all of your WiFi enabled devices such as laptops, game consoles, cell phones and tablets, Streaming devices such as Roku boxes and Internet enabled TV and sound devices, etc.

Wireless signals are affected by many factors including wall density, electrical interference, directional antenna range, etc. All of these factors will affect your actual wireless range.

Just because a particular wireless router works good at one location does not guarantee that it will have similar performance in a different location due to variance in the factors listed above.

You should try to centrally locate your wireless router or gateway up high and away from dense walls and electrical and 2.4 GHz wireless interference such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, baby monitors, etc.

The best solution would be to use a wired (Ethernet) connection between your PC and the router.

A quality 50' Ethernet patch cable is less than $10 at Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001W26TIW/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=excharge-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B001W26TIW

If it is not feasible to run cables you have other options such as powerline network adapters You plug one in by the router and one in the room where you need access and connect them to the devices with standard Ethernet patch cables. http://isp1.us/reviews/netgear-xavb2101-powerline-adapter/

The network signals are transmitted over your existing home electrical wiring which will not be affected by wireless interference.

However, if you absolutely need the wireless mobility there are various other ways to extend a Internet connection to areas with a weak wireless signal.

Devices such as wireless extenders that can expand your wireless range if need be. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004YAYM06/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=excharge-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B004YAYM06

The wireless range extender receives weak wireless signals and repeats them to extend the signal range to greater distances. Some models include 4 Ethernet ports in addition to the wireless radio.

Good Luck...

Answer
Probably not. Baby monitors work on three different frequency bands, and even withing the same band use different channels and different ways of matching up to each other.

Im going to be a first time mom & my baby's nursery is on a different floor in my house. Im looking for the best portable baby monitor, possibly a picture one. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Answer
I would go for a basic sound only monitor. When I was setting up my nursery we bought a motion and sound monitor. I found it to be useless for a new born as the baby was too small to set it off. It needed an adult or something bigger to set it off as it needed big movements (a hand waving in front of it.) I have one by fisher price that came with 2 speakers and the base. It is really good and picks up all sounds (it is so sensitive that it picks up the grand father clock chiming in the dinning room!) I love it. It only cost us about $80 from baby target.

What are the best non-digital baby monitors on the market?

I have looked into digital monitors, but they're a little out of my price range. Does anyone know of any good classic style baby monitors? I am pregnant with my first child.

Answer
I love the Sony sound sensor baby call. It's voice activated so you don't hear the static. You do have the choice of listening to everything though. I bought a second one for my 3 yr olds room since I can't hear her if she calls out. They are only $35.00 at Target, great buy.

She is 15 weeks old. I have been letting her. I like it because it is portable, she can be with me wherever I am. I'm not ready to walk away from her even with a baby monitor. Is it safe? I also let her sleep in her infant swing, it doesn't sit upright. And what about the infant pillows? Are those okay? there is one attached to the swing and the bouncy chair.

Answer
I definitely would not. I was doing this with my DD and my pedi said that it was definitely not a good idea. We use the Nap Nanny for this reason- because it doesn't let her sleep flat it puts her at the perfect angle and she sleeps even better than she ever did in the swing because the Nap Nanny is actually designed for long term sleeping and for holding the baby in a safe position.

Whats the best baby monitor under 50 bucks?

Sweetest S

We are hoping to find one that will work well in my 2 bedroom apartment that's not fuzzy. We just recently purchased a safety 1st monitor from walmart and its horrible! I couldn't imagine sleeping with all the fuzz.

Answer
I think i have the same one as the women above BUT i don't really recommend it. MOst of the times it's great but sometimes it's horrible. I think it catches signal from cell phones or even computers because even BEFORE my phone sounds off when i receive a text message the monitor makes a fuzzy light beeping noise. I actually still like it thought because it came with 2 portable monitors and the one to put in your baby's room has a night light that you can leave on or turn off. I paid $30 for it. Here it is: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=7977222

I would assume that the newer Fisher Price monitor but the one that comes with only 1 works better, this one: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10727389

Also the lights light up red when there's sound and that's what i liked the most about it! When i thought i heard something i would just wait to see the red lights and that's how i knew if it was my son or not.

Can someone use a video baby monitor to see inside my apartment?

paparazzi_

I have a video baby monitor that has excellent range, but it got me thinking, couldn't someone buy the same monitor and switch to the same channel and see inside my apartment if they wanted to?

I have the "Summer Infant Day & Night Handheld Color Video Monitor" and I know it can work with an extra camera (if I bought one)... so in theory, couldn't that work for my neighbors too?

Answer
It may be possible my sister discovered she has the same baby monitor as her neighbour. One night she just put my niece to bed went and layed down and went to sleep. She woke up a few hours later by this time is was about 1am and her husband was in bed as well now. When all of a sudden she heard a low man laugh coming from the monitor she woke up her husband half screaming and told him to get the baby. He got up realising something was wrong and ran into the nursery and picked up my niece and bought her into their bedroom. They couldn't find the source of the noise and so the baby was in her room for the rest of the night. Then my brother-in-law was talking to them the next morning and they discovered they have the same baby monitor and they can hear them sometimes too and they freaked out when they first discovered it. I'm guesssing that the video one's though would be different because they have the camera but anything is possible, perhaps you could ring the company and ask them about it.

Answer
I'm looking at this book "Baby Bargains" (a must-buy!!!). They have a section that tells you which monitors they think are best. Here's what they say, broken down in good, better, and best:

GOOD: Fisher Price Sounds 'N Lights (starts at $20), no fancy features but a really good starting point
BETTER: Graco's imonitor ($55 single, $90 dual receivers), has digital technology, rechargeable batteries, and 2000 foot range.
BEST: Sony BabyCall NTM-910 is the top rated and starts at $40. Does a lot of fancy stuff, which you might like or not.

My advice is to go online and read customer reviews as well. I got Summer's video monitor for my shower, but this book doesn't happen to endorse these kind because of too many parent complaints.

Can you tell me: Which are the best diapers that won't break the bank? :

Answer
Well I'm a young mother of four all under the age of five my youngest is 8 months old. I know what you mean about things costing a lot of money so here is my opion, but in the end its up to you.
Huggies are great but cost way to much
Luvs are way to much and they dont hold well
Pampers they say are great but I have found out that they suck, they dont hold up at all
So, I use White Clouds they are about $15 for a box of 100 or more and this is if you buy them at walmart. Also they hold up very well no leaks no messes and no wet beds or clothes which always makes you happy when u have less laundry to do. Plus they are good for babies who have sensitive skin as well.
Now baby monitors moms alway need these nice to have. I have used the same one with all four of my kids and its still working great. The price is worht it as well specially if you want more kids. You can get it at walmart
Fisher-Price 900 MHz Digital Private Connection Monitor with Dual Receivers
A new design and feature set makes this 900 MHz. Now you can also buy the single and not the dual works just as well.
Now your really dont need a wipe warmer the wipes arent that cold and there really not something needed but if you want one go to walmart and they have two kinds that are not that pricey.
Prince Lionheart Ultimate Wipes Warmer
Keeps wipes warm and moist, non-browning, anti-microbial
or
DEX On the Go Travel Wipes Warmer
Warm wipes for baby, anywhere at anytime. The 1st one is 19 or so dollars and the 2nd is 16 dollars
I hope this helped you out and congrats

As a career? How do you decide what you will go to school for, what school, and what career you will like?

Answer
Go online and look at the websites for several colleges-state colleges, big and little state and private schools, and then look at the majors thaT those colleges offer. I didn't even know till I met my freshman roommate that you could major in speech and hearing theraspy and be a speech therapist.
You'll be surprised at all of the choices. Then, think about what your strengths are. If you're good at math and science, you might choose a chemistry or biology major. If you're good at writing, consider an English major. If you want to live in a foreign country-major in a foreign language.

Whatever you major in in college will lead you toward a certain career field.

Another suggestion, check out books from the library that include descriptions of careers and see what careers suit your personality.

Last--do your homework. Here's some info I just found by just searching the key term "top careeers of the future" in Yahoo.

Yahoo lists the info below as some of the best future career fields:

I'm trying to be more natural and eco-friendly any tips?

Answer
There are a gazillion things to do.

I've really been trying to cut electrical use over the last year. We've replaced every bulb in our house with Compact Fluorescent or regular fluorescent bulbs. We've planted trees near windows, installed room darkening shades, weatherstripping, and window tint to keep rooms from heating up so the AC doesn't run as often. We bought a 7 day programmable thermostat so we can have the AC adjust throughout the day automatically so we're not needlessly cooling when no one is home. We're diligent about turning off the computer every night, turning off lights, keeping doors and windows open during nice weather, and turning off fans when no one is in the room (fans don't make the room cooler, they just make it feel cooler - a sort of wind chill factor).

We bought a remote control power controller called Bye-Bye Standby from Amazon. With a click of the remote you can kill the phantom power used by your electronics. I can turn off all my electronics and then kill the power with this thing and hear the electronics really turn off. Of course this uses batteries, but our outlets are not reachable behind our freecycled entertainment center, but I guess you can't win 'em all.

Prior to doing all these things, our previous low on our electric bill was right about $100. We've since had electric bills in $60-$70 range, and once even hit $50 right on the head. So, obviously we're using less electricity. Most all these changes don't cost a whole lot and actually pay for themselves in the long run.

I mentioned Freecycle before. Search for a Freecycle group in your area. This is a recycle program in which people give away stuff to each other for free, no strings attached. Our local Freecycle is actually run through a Yahoo group. We've given away old pots/pans, clothes, baby stuff, a computer monitor, etc. and have gotten stuff like a lamp and a basketball hoop. So, instead of this stuff ending up in the landfill, it's still being used and it was all free.

Also, go to the library to get videos and books, rather than buying them or renting them online. Because you are borrowing from the local library fewer of the videos and books need to be produced so less paper or less plastic is used and it saves on transportation costs. Our library is about 2 miles away. Netflix, Amazon, etc. are several states away so to get something from them requires a lot more fuel to get the same thing to me. Best of all, the library is free.

Shop at a local fruit and vegetable stand if possible. We go to one that is about 6 miles round-trip out of my way. However, the prices are cheaper than the local grocery store and most of the produce is local, unlike the grocery store which is more international. So I'm saving money and it's better for the environment because the products don't have to be shipped as far prior to consumption.

Complete the recycle circle. When possible, buy 100% post-consumer paper, or paper-packaging. Buy things made out of recycled plastic like plastic "wood" boards rather than pressure treated/chemical treated wood.

Buy things made out of bamboo, which is a fast growing, rigid grass that can be used like wood and in place of wood, so fewer slow growing trees need to be chopped down.
