How can I correctly care for a Savannah Monitor?

Dummy D

I've done a lot of research and reading but I want to know for sure, what is the best way to care for a Savannah Monitor? I know there's different opinions and ways on caring for them but I want to gain some new ideas. I was thinking on buying one at my local pet shop, but my friend told me that Petco sells unhealthy pets that usually don't survive too long. I was convinced because I had a hamster I bought from Petco and he had died in the matter of 3 months, and I had the proper care and nutrients it needed. But anyways, I was thinking about LllReptiles. I really wanted to know how I can setup a home made environment for a Baby Savannah Monitor? What I mean by that is, have its homemade aquarium, heating lamp, basking spot, ect.. I do have the money to buy the appropriate materials so I don't want to hear "Why are you buying this pet if you know nothing about it/cant afford it" I just want to know if I can bare with a homemade lifestyle for the Monitor that way I'll have time to buy the pet a new aquarium and the appropriate materials.

Answer
The first thing you should do whenever you get a new animal is take it to the appropriate vet (with fecal sample).
If you can make the viv yourself- fine. It may be even better than ready made ones.
Look at online images for Savannah Monitor Viv/cages/tanks or whatever. That's how a lot of iguana vivs are done.

Do you think big brother is keeping tabs on the parenting section?

Sydly

I asked a question yesterday about the media making money off 9/11....and it was deleted by Y!A....was it deleted because it wasn't particularly a parenting question (even though it was addressed to parents) or because it was such a hot topic?

BQ: When you put your 18 month old down for a nap and they try to fight it, how long do you listen to them cry on the baby monitor before giving in and getting them out of their crib?

Answer
I've noticed a lot of new accounts here. Looks like the regs are getting taken over by 'newbies'. You were probably reported, which seems odd because all the newbies are trolls.

I always laid with my son until he was asleep. First time mom syndrome.

What do you know about Baby Sensor Mats?

Fairy Dust

I am doing a little research into baby monitors. I have seen the sensor mat/pad which lies beneath the baby's matress. It goes off if it does not detect any sound/movement for 20 secs.
Now, a few concerns...
a) does it go off quite often in the night (scaring you half to death) but usually false alarms.
b) how does it sensor movement when baby is laying still? breathing movements? of which it would have to be very sensitive!
c) Do they really work?!

Answer
we had one with our daughter. it senses the breath movements. The only time ours went off was when she finally figured out how to wiggle off of it giving me a heart attack lol.

What average amount of items needed in beginning prepping for a newborn?!?

Theresa

Receiving blankets, burp rags, swaddling blankets, fancier blankets, bibs, etc.

Answer
sometimes it depends on the baby, but for any I would say that surprisingly few things are needed. it partly depends on how often you want to wash things.

I would recommend:
-1 place for the baby to sleep
-1 baby monitor (one with a sensor pad gives piece of mind)
-3 receiving blankets (I pretty much used the same things over)
-1 infant bath tub (one with it's own slant for the infant is easiest to use)
-1 baby lotion (the less perfumes the better)
-1 baby shampoo and body wash
-1 hamper (to put dirty laundry in)
-1 change table, pad & cover (if you can get one with a drawer it helps to keep everything in)
-1 box of diapers (OR at least 12 cloth diapers)
-1 diaper rash cream
-1 diaper bag (get 1 that comes with a travel change mat)
-1 breast pump (if you are nursing)
-1 can of infant formula (even if you are nursing, it's good to have for emergencies)
-nipple cream (if you are nursing it helps, it's also good to use on babies scratches as its ok for them to swallow it)
-1 thermometer
-2 pacifiers (if you use them)
-2 bottles (wide mouth if you are nursing, usually come with a pump)
-5 sleepers (at least, other outfits are more likely to be worn later)
-2 hats (at least)
-baby nail clippers
-baby Tylenol & Advil
-baby D drops
-baby hair brush
-3 infant towels (with hoods)
-2 blankets
-3 burp clothes (I never used them, but you will want more if the child is a puker)
-5 face clothes
-1 box of wipes OR at least 12 clothes for wiping
-1 diaper pail (it helps reduce the stink)
-1 bouncy seat (if you buy nothing else, I found this most helpful!
-1 infant car seat
-1 stroller (preferably 1 that fits the car seat)
-1 swing (you can get away with just the bouncy seat)
-1 floor mat (at about 2 weeks old you should start tummy time, a floor mat helps keep things safe and clean
-1 humidifier (especially helpful if you live somewhere very dry like Alberta)
-1 dresser (to put clothes & blankets in)

That is pretty much the minimum of what you want to have. a few things I found unnecessary where:
---burp clothes (I never used them, but some children throw up more)
---car window shades (I never got any, just put a blanket over the seat to block the sun)
---high chair (baby doesn't need it right away)
---bibs (I didn't use them, unless the baby drools a lot of throws up a lot, you won't either)
---toys (for a little while they won't be playing, so not a priority right away)
---too many clothes (you end up with a few favourite outfits anyway, and rarely wear other items)
---nursing pillow (I used it, but you can just as easily use a regular pillow)
---nursing cover (a blanket works too, but you might want it for going out)
---teething rings/gel (I haven't really used it)
---an infant toothbrush (I have it and use it, but you can use a face cloth to wipe their gums)
---nasal aspirator (I hate using it)
---pacifier thermometer (the nurses/doctors wanted the reading done under the arm)

Hope what helps a little!!

We just moved into a new house where our master bedroom is completely on the opposite side of the house from our son's room. The moniter that we have now works only sporadically (most of the time it flashes "out of range"). I really need one that will work well! It probably doesn't help that our bedroom is converted from the old garage, so there are literally 2 brick walls between our room and our son's room. Please help! Thank you!

Answer
I have a Mobi and it works great in my house. My house isn't huge but I can be upstairs and my daughter's room is downstairs on the other side of the house and it is clear. During the day the pic is in color, but turns to black and white at night. The only static has been when we have it too close to our remote controls and cell phones. It will get fuzzy but we move the items and it is fine.

Not sure if it will work between brick walls, but I have been out in our garage on my treadmill and had no problem.

I have a raccoon and 6-8 tiny babies in my tenants attic more?

Lndlrdlisa

I know I have to get a trap and cover the entrance. My concern is relocating the mama and babies safely. They are very tiny newborns but my tenant wants them out NOW.
I can bring them to my house near woods but how will the mama find a new nest?
The last 2 answers are both good, thanks so much. I'll let the voters decide.
Oh and BTW, where I live the wildlife rehab center can no longer take raccoons.
So I asked the tenant if I could put a light and radio up there and hope mama relocates them herself.

Answer
There is a humane way to deal with this.

1. The mother raccoon will be in the nest all day, sleeping and nursing. Now is the time to search for and locate all possible entrances and exits from the attic space. Gather all the things you might need to completely seal those entrances. Create a nesting box: a safe box, animal carrier, something with a soft blanket, a heat lamp or heated pad under the cage/box for the babies when you move them. (if the weather is cold, if not, just enough blankets for them to snuggle in may be enough)
2. The mother will go out in the evening to forage. Now you can gather the babies and put them in the newly acquired nesting box. If they do not have their eyes open, they will also not be able to hear, and they will give you no trouble when picking them up. Leave this box, and the babies inside and right by the entrance that you have sealed. The mother will come and take the babies to a new nesting site. Monitor this box, if the mother has not returned to retrieve the babies within 24 hours, please take them all to a wild animal rehabilitation center, where they can be raised and released.

Raccoons are highly intelligent and opportunistic. They often have several safe places of rest, not just your attic. Do not tangle with an adult, they are very fierce and protective of the young. Try to remain a reasonable distance away from the babies, so that she will feel safe coming to get them.

There are some companies that will do this for you, although I hear horrible stories of their inhumane practises IE: kill the mother, and let the babies starve. It will likely be expensive as well, since they will have to monitor the nesting box, and deal with the young if mother should not return for whatever reason.

It is illegal to re-locate a raccoon, you risk moving them into a territory that is already inhabited by a raccoon family. This will cause the death of both the mother and the young.

Raccoons get a bad rap in my view. They are misunderstood, considered pests. How is it a raccoon's fault that humans are unable to control their own garbage? Please treat them with respect and consideration. They are deserving of a little compassion.

EDIT: Please wear gloves, raccoons can carry some nasty diseases, easily passed to humans and domestic pets. Usually through feces, so wash, with bleach all items that have come in contact with the nest and babies.

Answer
i have the Angelcare Deluxe Movement Monitor and it is the most amazing thing ever it tells you the temp in babys room has a night light and monitors babys breathing and if there is none for 15sec a warning beep goes off and after 20 the thing goes crazy. I love it. I dont worry about sids and have been able to sleep much more then with my 1st.

How can we quiet down the baby in the middle of the night? She is not crying but cooing very loudly?

2fine4u

The baby monitor is by our heads. Our little diva is not a crying baby. She is a very happy baby. Our prince's room is next to the nursery and she keeps him up too. She coos and plays loudly for half of the night. The only time that she stops is when one of us goes into the nursery and she just smiles at us. Crying is easy, but she plays and makes all kinds of noises. She is fine, but I never want to turn the monitors off. Suggestions.

Answer
aww thats soooo cute. i suggest just turning it down a bit. if shes really crying you can hear more easily. so either that, or put it further away in the room. hopefully that helps =]

Well like during March, my mother was going to have a child but in the end it was self aborted. Then blood started to come out, and she couldnt keep her pee in. So the doctor was some crazy bitch excuse my language, and while cleaning her up she didnt let her pee. She told my mom oh i know you can keep it in, and if you dont keep it in im going to leave and do my next emergency. I was like mom cmon she doesnt care, can you hold it in please? The stupid doctor said haha ha i do care, ( LIKE THE EVIL DEVIL SHE WAS). The my moms likes she cant hold it, she cant hold it. It was like my mom was acting like a baby, and plus my mother didnt know english. Next that stupid woman saw in the monitor that her pee level was high and needed to pee. Then after so long she let her pee because the monitor said she had too. Like seriously lady? My mothers bleeding in that area and she needed to pee. Its august now, and this incident happened in March. Was this right for the doctor to do? If it wasnt cant I still sue her!
Im going to be 17 in september, i dont think im old enough to sue right?

Answer
Wow, that sounds terrible!

Well. Anyone can sue anyone, but whether you have a case or not depends on a lot more than what you posted here. Your mom would be the only one that can credibly sue in this case-- your case would get thrown out as soon as the judge finds out that you are not entitled to bring suit, unlkess your mom suddenly became your legal ward.

Well, you might have a case for emotional trauma, and can sue of you are an adult, but any award would be low as the doctor's attorneys will just show that it didn't affect you in any crippling way.

Also, without a likely "winning outcome" -- with a cash award, no attorney will help you unless you want to shell out big bucks in advance.

A better route is to complain to the medical board and the hospital board where this doctor practices. And go on facebook and any review sites and review the doctor.

You must be very careful to be clear and factual, when you state what happened. You do not want to get in trouble for slander or liebl (spoken or written defamation of a person). You can also give your opinion about things such as whether you would ever recommend the doctor to anyone.

My mind is so clouded that I can not think straight. Can you give me a clearer picture?

My husband is abusive. He is verbally, emotionally, & at times physically abusive. He was abusive while I was pregnant with both of our children. He was abusive after they were born. He would say things like:
you can't do sh** right
your a sick bi*** (had/have postpartum depression)
etc. etc. etc.
He is a very self-centered man. Everything is about him & he always has some sort of issue to attend to. We even had to focus on him while I was in labor. He was angry about something...
He makes it known that I am his problem. I am the reason that he is abusive. I make him this way. If he was with someone else they would appreciate him more. (We live in a big house. I work as a elementary teacher part time to keep the kids out of daycare.) He thinks that I should be more appreciative because he is one black man that hasn't left his family. But to tell you the truth, this is worst than him just leaving me. He is here but he resents being here. You know that "work" of raising children. But he wants to award of being here for his kids, but on the side he is taking out his resentment on me. Always talks about how much work he does with the kids, i.e. helping with bath, diapers, monitoring, etc. He enjoys nothing with them it seems.

It is so hard to appreciate him because he is so abusive. I can not see past the abusive things that he saids and does. That is why I am leaving. My children who are in the infant & toddler phase do not deserve to grow up in such a dysfunctional environment. I am a excellent mother. My 2 year old already knows her ABC, counting to 10, etc. etc.
Can I be causing him to be abusive? Or is he using the fact that I am weak with postpartum depression to make me feel helpless & guilty enough to stay?

Answer
Sweetheart...there is no way on earth that it is your fault that he is abusive. That is a choice he makes, every time he does it. He can stop, if he so chose.

He is using your weakness to control you and cover his own problems. You can never do anything that is deserving of any type of abuse.

You are doing the right thing by leaving. It will be very hard, no doubt. You're heart might hurt, you may think you did the wrong thing, you may feel bad because you "hurt" him. Let me tell you, you are doing the right thing, the pain will pass, and as far as hurting him...he should have thought about the pain he'd feel while he was inflicting your pain.

You are right that the kids don't deserve to grow up in such an environment. They will lead much healtheir, more productive lives if they are not afraid. Also, they will learn respect and how to treat others properly if they are not hearing and seeing daddy be mean and uugly to mama.

You can do this....your babies deserve it! And as far as being weak....you have 2 children, work, and put up with an abusive husband! I don't see any weakness there! You are strong enough to see what he does is wrong, that your kids deserve better, and you are leaving. That takes strength. Now, you will have to put "strong" into overdrive to make it after you leave him....even if just for a little while.

God bless you, I'll be praying for you and your babies! You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you! (Philippians 4:13)!

I've had a headache all day, and I want it gone :( but I can't swallow pills and I already took baby asprin in the morning, and I took some liquid childrens medicine almost two hours ago. but it still won't go away. it's at bay right now, like it doesn't hurt as much but it's still bothering me a lot. and I can feel it like behind my right eye. and tips or remedies are appreciated. thanks in advance!

Answer
IHave you seen an orthodontist/dentist to be examined for TMJ/TMD. Tension stress from your TM joint in your jaw can make you sickly with migraines if out of place even a smidge.I got it from a jolt to my head and the tmj muscles stretched out causing sickening headaches, face pain and ear aches. Please check even with your doctor about it.

Many things can trigger a HEADACHES/MIGRAINES: using your arm in an awkward way (bowling) when you don't normally do that, lack of food (skipping meals), head resting in a hairdressers sink, going to a concert with light show, video game screen with fast movements & flashing lights, staring in the light (sun) constantly on your eyes...etc.

You may want to check your settings on all your digital items that you are using. Each device you use has a warning that MANY COMPLETELY IGNORE. Go under your settings for your screen settings on your computer, laptops, televisions, monitors, digital games, etc. AND LOWER THE BRIGHTNESS ON THE SCREEN.

Also, don't forget that all these items are a heat source and depending on how close you are to the item you are using, you are affecting your personal body sources. (ie. flickering lights affect the eyes, laptops on laps affect fluids. etc.)

You may be completely dehydrated if you aren't drinking adequates amounts of water daily. Here's a guide to help you figure out how much water you require daily for your weight.

? Your Weight Times (.5) Equals Divided By 8oz (or 1 Cup) Equals # Cups of Water/Day

• 150lbs x .5 = 75/8 = 9 Cups of Water/day
• 175lbs x .5 = /8 = 11 Cups of Water/day
• 200lbs x .5 = 100/8 = 12.5 Cups Water/day

If you take your medication with an extra caffeine drink, it will hit your system faster, but that only means enough to swallow the medication and wash it down. It does not mean drink an entire can or you will suffer from extreme caffeine withdrawal (rebound migraines).

1. I used to use a combination of medications which included 400mg Ibuprofen 4x a day with food. This takes the swelling and inflammation down. DO NOT exceed1600mg in one day and you may need prilosec for stomach protection as ALL ANTI INFLAMMATORIES are difficult on the stomach. ***You can use Tylenol with Ibuprofen and Aspirin watch for daily maximums & don't exceed.

2. Robaxacet is Tylenol (acetominophen) combined with methocarbonal (muscle relaxant)...this also comes with codeine on request from the pharmacist. This only relaxes any tight muscles around the pain and helps reduce some pain. You can use Robaxacet with Ibuprofen and Aspirin, BUT NOT Tylenol as it's already an ingredient in this pill.

3. Robaxacyl is Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) combines with methocarbonal (muscle relaxant)...this has a blood thinning active ingredient and isn't ideal for anyone under age 16 years or complications with blood pressure, ailments, etc. This both takes down the inflammation as well as treats the pain. You can use Robaxacyl with Ibuprofen and Tylenol, BUT NOT Aspirin as it's already an ingredient in this pill.
------------------------------...
4. Aleve is a Nonsteroidal Anti Inflammatory (Naproxen) which will helps reduce the inflammation, and as the inflammation decreases so does the pain; BUT you CANNOT mix this drug with any of the above mentioned safely.

5. Dynamint has been used on horses legs for years, but it does an amazing job on sore neck muscles. It's ingredients are Peppermint Oil, Eucalyptus Oil , Tea Tree Oil and Calendula Oil.

6. Deep Cold Gold is an alternative rub that works very well on tight aching tendons on your upper shoulders, neck and TMJ joints.

When I was 16 years old I had severe tension headaches that made the ligament behind my ear pop out like a big ole bump. The doctor prescribed a low dose of Elavil (amitryptaline) & it was gone within days. The Elavil in high doses is used for depression but they use it for car accidents because it relaxes the muscles from whiplash.

If you experience a headache with ANY LOSS OF WEAKNESS, SLURRING, IMBALANCE or FEVER, then you need to seek medical attention immediately for a consult to make sure there isn't something more serious going on.

Answer
Some people respond more to political rhetoric and not factual information. They lack the ability (or motivation) to think critically.

1. Deep-well hydraulic fracturing does not travel far enough through the rock to affect or harm fresh-water supplies. Millions of fracturing jobs and thousands of field-monitoring tests have confirmed this.

2. Statistically, the chance of even minor water contamination from fracturing chemicals in properly constructed deep wells is less than 1 in 1 million. This is documented in various studies.

3. The height of any fracture produced by hydraulic fracturing is limited by natural lithostatic, hydrostatic, and tectonic stresses, as well as frac barriers formed by overlying layers of rock with different geomechanical properties so the typical fracture height is 100-300 feet above the wellbore.

4. It has been standard practice in the industry for decades to line well bores with heavy steel pipe which is cemented around the outside of the pipe. This pipe is placed and cemented to depths that go deeper than any freshwater aquifer in the area (this is the law in most places) before any deeper drilling takes place, especially any deeper drilling that is expected to encounter oil and gas.

5. Water contamination due to spilled industrial chemicals occurs rarely, but is always associated with accidents related to road transport, leaks of on-site surface storage, or during mixing and well construction phases. These failings are already regulated, in fact in the US these come under the full jurisdiction of the Environmental Protection Agency and do not have any exemptions from the Clean Water Act.

6. In the deep wells typical of shale gas no documented examples of chemical contamination from hydraulic fracturing have been found (except for surface spills at the well site or during transport).

7. Hydraulic fracturing has not been documented to increase the presence of methane (a harmless non-toxic gas that has no odor and must reach 5% concentrations to be ignited). Poor well construction from any type of well, including a hydraulically fractured well, a conventional oil well, or even a deep water well can cause methane contamination of shallow fresh-water aquifers. Most cases of methane in fresh water aquifers are the result of biogenic methane bacteria, and/or drawdown of water pressure in the water well that allows the methane that was already there to come out of solution and be desorbed from surrounding rock. Shallow coals and thin shales found in aquifer rocks are often the source of this methane and not associated with oil and gas drilling. High pressure air-drilling is sometimes used by the oil industry, as well as the water well drilling industry, and this can stir up sediment and activate bacteria in shallow fresh water zones. More care in this type of drilling would be appropriate.

8. Chemical disclosure of well fracturing fluids is already required by law in the United States and is not inappropriate. Full disclosure is required by OSHA and MSDS sheets are required by law to be available at the well site. Most states and oil and gas drillers are now disclosing these chemicals on public websites.

9. The first fracturing job took place in 1947. It is a little late to get upset about it now because nearly 90% of the wells drilled in the world use some application of this process. Nor is shale gas something new- the first shale gas well was drilled in Fredonia, New York in 1821. Shale fracturing research was first begun in the public sector by the US Department of Energy in the 1970's.

10. Most of the chemicals used in a typical fracturing job are found in your kitchen and bathroom. Polyacrimide is used in baby diapers and as a flocculant in public water treatment plants that process your drinking water. Glutaraldehyde can be found in hospitals, and household disinfectants. Ozone and chlorine dioxide are used in municipal water supplies to disinfect your drinking water. Ozone is also emitted by your laser printer. Phosphonate is found in detergents and used as a medical treatment for bone problems. Surfactants are nothing more than a technical name for dish soap. These are the five most commonly used chemicals in a frac job.

11. Fluid forced into the well that is not part of the flow-back water is never coming back. Shales are dessicated when they have generated gas and oil and the water is chemically bound to the shale. It is not coming out of the rock- it is now part of the rock.

12. The radioactivity of shale and water coming back out of a shale is well below Federal safety thresholds. Surface rocks such as granite are probably more likely to have dangerous levels of radioactivity than shales (and this is why I will not live in a house with a granite counter top).

Here is a well written paper explaining more about hydraulic fracturing:http://www.kgs.ku.edu/PRS/Fracturing/Frac_Paper_SPE_152596.pdf

We are thinking of getting a video baby monitor. We are wondering what is the distance the signal can be picked up. People are telling us burglars and pedophiles will drive around and pick up the signals. But what distance does it take, because we can see around our house where someone might park to view our monitor and that is in plain sight. Thanks for the help.

Video monitors don't have a long range but according to the article below, the picture is scrambled. The sound monitors can be heard as far as 900 feet, which is pretty much a small corner of your neighborhood.

Although it does not have video, the Angelcare monitor is what I used for both my children.

It has a movement monitor that you slip under the mattress and sound monitor combined that is ULTRAsensitive. I was always scared that my babies would stop breathing during the night. I felt it was better than a video monitor since you can't sit in front of the video monitor 24/7, (and you certainly can't watch it while YOU are asleep,) but you will certainly hear the alarm on this monitor! Very reliable, gave me peace of mind and overall one of the best monitors I've ever owned.

I really need help deciding what surround sound Bose speaker system to get for my room?

starbucks

I have about a 12 by 12 foot room. I want a high quality system with at least four speakers, including one bigger than the others. It needs to be wireless so I can play music from my computer. I also need to have a jack for my ipod to connect to.

Answer
If you want a high quality system then absolutely do not buy Bose. For the same price you spend on Bose, you can get a much better sound system. The only thing superior about Bose is their marketing.

Right now, I would say that JBL, Klipsch and Polk Audio are probably the 3 leading speaker companies that consumers such as yourself should be looking into. They all have equivalently priced products as Bose, but with superior sound in that price bracket.

Another thing I would like to try to talk you out of is a wireless system. So much stuff these days rely on wireless technology (cell phones, computers, keyless entry key chains, baby monitors, etc.) that you will often get interference and bleed-over into your wireless speakers. Cell phones can produce a popping noise while things like baby monitors can actually cause voices to be heard in the background, behind the music.

And since these wireless speakers are active, meaning that they have to be plugged into an AC outlet for power, they can also get interference from "dirty" or unstable power coming from your wall socket. Unstable power can be caused by electric motors such as refrigerator compressor pumps, washer and dryers, and more. So one minute you may be listening to some clean music and the next minute music with a fuzzy background noise because your refrigerator kicked on.

To prevent dirty power, you can buy power filters. Of course you would have to buy one for each speaker. The good thing is that most of these power filters have built-in surge protection (which you will also want). The bad thing is that they start at about $60 per filter. So if you bought a 5.1 style speaker system, you would need $360 just for filters.

So think about it. Do you really want to spend a grand or more on "quality" speakers just to have them play hissing and buzzing sounds just because you wanted a wireless system? I wouldn't. Take the time to run some wires and do the job right. You can't half ass quality.

And if some sales person says to you that you will not get this kind of interference, just remember, it's his job to tell you this.

As far as your sound system goes, to choose a nice one, you need to take a few things into consideration like:

1. What is your budget?
2. Will this be primarily for watching movies or for music?
3. How many speakers do I want? Specifically. 4 plus a sub woofer? 5 and a sub? This makes a big difference in price.

Once you have figured these things out, then your question can be better answered.

Is it okay to sleep a 2 month old on their tummy while an adult is present?

Kipani

My twins always fall asleep during tummy time... Anyway it would be so great if I could just allow them to sleep that way since they're up 90% of the day and it's so difficult to get them to sleep any other way.

Answer
Babies naturally are more comfy on their bellies and the risk of sids depends on so many different factors. I myself asked this question a month ago and did some research on sids and then decided my two month old could sleep on his stomach. He is in a cosleeper right next to my bed on a firm mattress and a sensor pad that came with my baby monitor which monitors his movement and breathing. This monitor has helped put my mind at ease. Now we are sleeping 6-8 hours a night :) instead of 2-3 intervals.
I would say as long as your babies can turn their heads from side to side try it if you are comfortable.....

Is it normal to be afraid your child is going to die in their sleep?

Kelly s

I know it's irrational, but my daughter is 6 months old. I can't sleep because I'm so afraid I'll sleep and she wont be awake when I wake up. There are times I'll touch her just to make sure she is awake. Is this normal? Will it pass?

Answer
I have this fear too, although it has got better as my baby has got older (he is 10 months) and we are past the highest risk time for SIDS.

What I have found really helped though, is we have the AngelCare monitor, with the sensor pads. They sound an alarm if there is no movement from breathing. It has made me a lot more relaxed.

Does this Free T4 & Free T# make me hypothyroid?

best baby monitor 1.0 image

Milla's Mo

I'm 26 wks pregnant and had hyperthyroid prior to getting pregnant. I've been on PTU from the beginning. Well, now my levels for the past month have been off. My Free T4 is 1.0 and my Free T3 is 267. My OB wants me at the high end of normal and well, I'm obviously not anymore.

Do you think this will have an effect on my unborn twin's brain development? It was at the high normal until I was 5 months pregnant.

Answer
Your free t4 is OK, but your free t3 is on the low side. Supplements like zinc, selenium, and lytrosine help with conversion of T4 into T3, though I have to wonder if you need supplemental T3. I'm hypothyroid, I only feel well if the free t3 is above 350. I think I'd call and talk to mt doctor immediately. It's vry important to have the levels just right when pregnant. I have a friend who miscarried her 2nd pregnancy because she wasn't having her thyroid levels checked every 3-4 weeks. With her 3rd pregnancy, she had levels monitored more often and had a healthy baby girl who is 5 months old now.

Call your doctor or see an endocrinologist who deals with pregnant women.

What if Gardasil?

Q. Do you think Gardasil is a totally safe vaccine? What if in five years from now they find out that the people who have taken the vaccine won't be able to have babies or become pregnant? Should people be taking this risk, since it is a new vaccine? Do you think it is a safe vaccine?

How do you get better reception on a baby video monitor?

best baby monitor for two rooms image

KMCelio

I just bought a Summer Video Monitor and it doesn't work without static between two rooms in our small condo. I am hoping there is a way to improve reception, because right now I can't even keep it on at night because the static noise is so great, and when I turn the monitor on the picture is pretty fuzzy and jumps in and out. Any advice?

Answer
Try unplugging any electronic devices between the transmitter and receiver, see if something is causing interference.

Has anyone used a video baby monitor?

Pregnant w

How do they work?
What are the pros and cons?
I am thinking about buying one that you can have two monitors and see two rooms at once and was wondering how many people prefer it.

Answer
Congrats on baby #2!

I couldn't live with out my video monitor!! I have the Summer Infant Day & Night Handheld Color Video Monitor. The picture is so clear both at night and during the day. I love being able to check on my baby with out waking her. I don't even have to get out of bed unless she really needs me! I think if I only had the audio, I would have been getting up a lot more often to investigate every sound, especially during the first few months. The handheld part has a button on top so you can turn off the video screen if the light bothers you at night. Then if you hear something you feel you need to check on, simply click the button and the video comes back on. I read the reviews for this product. Many people say they could not get a signal. I never had a problem. I also read that they can interfere with wi-fi. My husband is a web developer... he never would have allowed wi-fi interference!

I highly recommend this monitor to all my friends. The only con I can think of is that I have had to change the channel due to static. Seriously, it's a flick of a button and I've had to do it maybe 3 times in 7 months. No biggie! I know you can get an extra camera for this monitor, but I don't need one yet. Here is what one person commented: "We bought a second camera to go with the monitor we already had. I love being able to switch back and forth between my two kids' rooms. Only issue is if the monitor is too close to one camera, you can have interference when trying to check on the other one."

I am 11 weeks pregnant and I would like to hear my baby's heartbeat. I looked at target and babies r us but they both seem to have gotten bad reviews. Does anyone know where I can find an inexpensive one that works well.

I bought the Sonoline B fetal doppler from clinicalguard.com for 61$ including 2 day shipping. It work great & says it can detect the heartbeat at 12 weeks, but i have read of women using it as early as 9 weeks & hearing the heart.

What baby items do you wish you registered for? Need advice?

PrettyWife

I am registering with Babies R Us and this is our first baby. I already registered for the basics like a stroller, crib, dresser, high chair, etc.

What baby items do you wish you registered for?

What do you wish you didn't register for?

Any advice on making a baby registry?

Answer
I never needed or used a high chair or a "walker/exer-saucer." I didn't need the swing either; it was used twice. The bouncy chair that hung from the doorway was used for about 2 months. I never used the bottle sanitizer or rack for the dishwasher after the 1st time because it didn't do anything for us but make things difficult. I threw out the diaper wipe warmer - that dried out the wipes. The diaper genie was nice for about 3 months and then there was no cleaning it enough (it was always cleaned and sanitized on Mondays) to get that smell out... it's made of plastic, so it slowly absorbed the faint diaper smell... just throw the little butt-muffins out in a plastic grocery bag and take the trash out of the house! I used almost zero "baby proofing" products - I watched my kid. Depending on your house size/lifestyle, you probably don't need a monitor either. At night the bedroom doors are open so I can hear her, but if she's napping and I want to garden, I set up the monitor while I'm outside. I never used a pacifier - I never thought that it was necessary because they only pacify the parents, not the baby... and then it becomes a habit.

I did use the mittens - made of t-shirt material - so she didn't scratch herself. She never sucked her thumb/fingers either, maybe because of the mittens. I used almost everything in those little kits of baby things like the nose squeezy, thermometer, nail clippers... Never used powder or baby oil, but I did use baby lotion and diaper cream (for what they're each intended for, of course! lol). She didn't want socks, let alone shoes on her feet until about 1, so I never had to buy shoes until then. I did buy Dreft, the baby laundry soap. I never bought a gate; again, I watched my kid!

You can never have enough onsies and easy outfits. Fluffy dresses and suits are more of a pain than they are cute. Soft towels, washcloths and all-in-one bathwash/shampoo are never going to be thrown out. Socks, hats, boxes of diapers, and wipes will always be welcomed. Carseat/stroller combo was a huge time-saver. Having 3 sets of sheets for the crib was the perfect amount. I had about 9 burp cloths and 3 bibs at any given time; again, fancy ones aren't useful. I didn't need a changing table. I didn't use a diaper bag, I got a bigger pocket book.

And are you breastfeeding? If not, formula is a huge help too!

My family recently got the Netgear DSL Gateway Model 7550 from ATT and I would like to know how many devices can be connected to it. As of right now we have about 18 devices. 4 Iphone, 2 printers, and 12 computers. I recently just bought the new Lenovo Yoga ultra book with windows 8. and I have had some problems staying connected to the wifi. I would connect to the wifi, then shut down m Lenovo yoga and then I would get back on my computer and I would be kicked out of my wifi. can anyone explain why this is happening and how many devices my Netgear DSL Gateway Model 7550 can carry?

Answer
Most of the time you won't have problems until you reach 25 or more WiFi clients, this would not include Ethernet clients.

Wireless signals are affected by many factors including distance, wall density, electrical interference, directional antenna range, etc.

All of these factors will affect your actual wireless range. As wireless connection quality varies the connection speeds are renegotiated. The WLAN connection may start at 150 Mbps and end up at less than 10 Mbps or drop entirely.

Just because a particular wireless router or device works good at one location does not guarantee that it will have similar performance in a different location due to variance in the factors listed above.

You should try to centrally locate your wireless router or gateway up high and away from dense walls and electrical and 2.4 GHz wireless interference such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, baby monitors, etc.

That being said,

How fast is your DSL Internet connection? http://speedtest.net

DSL is among the slowest of the mainstream broadband types. Cable or fiber optic is generally much faster.

Your Internet speed is determined by your ISP and is measured in Mbps (Millions of bits per second). You can test your Internet speed here: http://speedtest.net

For example if you pay for a 3 Mbps Internet connection, you will get 3 Mbps.

No router or connection settings will change your 3 Mbps Internet speed. This connection bandwidth is shared among all of the users of your LAN. So any bandwidth others are using will be deducted from the total WAN (Internet) bandwidth that is available to you.

If you have a 3 Mbps Internet connection and one user is utilizing 2.5 Mbps of the bandwidth to stream a Netflix movie that only leaves 0.5 Mbps for all of the rest of the users on the LAN.

In simple terms, the more users you have the more speed will be required. Streaming video, such as Netflix and Hulu require a lot of bandwidth. Here are the minimum recommendations from Netflix. https://support.netflix.com/en/node/306

The only real way to speed up your Internet connection is to get a faster ISP or speed tier.

Good Luck...

How to make a Video baby monitor?

i dont kno

Can someone please tell me how to make a video baby monitor? The only problem is i dont have any fancy gadgets, like an iphone or ipad or ianything! lol.
i have an extra laptop and i have an old webcam. could this work to make a video baby monitor??
i want to be able to connect to it somehow from my laptop that iam currently using, like skyp or something??
Iam very bad with computers lol
I understand what your saying and thats why i dont want to spend any money on this. But if i can figure out a way to do it with stuff i have laying around i would like to see him, and not have to sneak into his room to see him. ( because yes i will be going in to look at him, i have from day one and i dont think that will stop for quiet awhile)

Answer
I can't help you with any of the technical stuff, but I wanted to say that video baby monitors are quite useless. Its one of those baby items that is totally unnecessary.

What's important is that you *hear* your baby wake up and cry for you. Its not important to *see* your baby - after all, you will be very, VERY tired yourself. Its not like you'll be up all night watching your baby sleep.

I have some questions about fish please?

1) How long should one "cycle" a new tank before putting fish in?
2) Can one have a small pleco & a apple snail in 20 gallon tank with them getting enough food, adding a algae pellet a day?
3) Our molly had babies & we isolated them in one of those box nets at top of tank. How long time wise or length of fish wise should we wait before we release them back in tank?

Answer
1. A fishless cycle (recommended) will take between 3 and 8 weeks. Add a source of ammonia such as fish food or household ammonia to the tank and monitor levels on a daily basis until ammonia and nitrite are 0.

2. The term "pleco" describes a HUGE variety of catfish - many of which grow quite large, so it depends on the specific plec you're after.

3. They need to be too big to fit into the largest fish's mouth. What other fish do you have?

Note: If you have an established filter, you can take some of the media (sponge, bio-balls, ceramic plates, etc) out of the filter and put it in the new filter. That'll act as seed bacteria and speed the cycling process up.

My sugar glider refuses to eat crickets?

Morgan_Hor

I've had my glider for quite a while, but she has recently started to refuse crickets. She eats everything else (fruit, eggs, LOTS of apples, etc.) fine though. I have to go to the city 45 minutes away to get meal worms, so the only protein (besides Leadbeather's) I can give to her are crickets. Why do you think she isn't eating them? How can I make them 'tastier'?

Answer
a lot of things actually wont eat crickets
when my monitor was a baby he'd turn his nose away (now he eats anything that i offer him...), my current baby monitor wont touch them, and neither will my older female leopard gecko
maybe she just doesnt like them?

when my crested gecko is being a bit picky, i'll dip the crickets in honey and he'll go for them right away - maybe thats worth a try

you could try other feeder insects. Locusts and hoppers and roaches are always available, and none of my lizards can resist either
and if you know she eats mealworms (or even superworms), then they are very very easy to breed. Buying one box could mean you dont have to go back to the shop for over a year

How can I cool down my baby's room? Really worried about SIDS/cot death?

It's reading 29C on my baby monitor and I have a fan on full pelt, window open, all windows open upstairs and the door open trying to circulate the air but as yet nothing seems to be working.
She is sleeping just in her nappy but I am worried about going to bed and leaving her in that heat

Answer
Not every house has AC, I'm in the UK and it's rare for homes to be fitted with AC.

It's baking here in England at the minute and my son's room is the same - reading 26C on the baby monitor. He's ten months old.

Usually when it's hot I just strip him down to the bare minimum for sleeping in - tonight he has on just a vest and a nappy. I have his window open and the curtains open a little to let the air get through. Leave her bedroom door open and try open a window on the opposite side of the house to create a draft. For example, my son sleeps in the back bedroom and his window is open, we sleep in the front bedroom and our window is open, I have our bedroom door open and his bedroom door open, this lets the air flow through the house and helps to cool it down.

If it's hot tomorrow (which it likely will be) then leave the window in her room open all day if you can. Keep her curtains shut though as this will block out the sunlight and cut the thermal heat down a little. If you can afford it then invest in a black-out blind for her room as they have a thermal lining in them, this keeps the room warm in winter and cool in summer. These are available fairly cheaply, Wilkinsons do them for around £12 in a variety of colours.

Take some water to bed with you in a baby bottle so you can offer her a cool drink. The temperature will steadily drop overnight and her body temperature will cool slightly too if she is a deep sleep. I promise you she will be fine as she isn't wrapped up in any blankets and her head isn't covered so her body will be able to shed heat via the exposed areas of skin (particularly her head and her feet). If you are very concerned then move her into a cooler room for the night - if your bedroom or any other room is cooler than her room then put her in there.

At what age did you stop using the tick alarm on your angel care baby monitor?

<3 my baby

I have been using the angel care monitor with the tick alarm. Its a sensor to monitor the baby's breathing. My baby is now 6 months old and is starting to move all around her crib and when she gets in a corner the monitor doesn't pick up her movement and the alarm goes off. I am considering if i want to stop using it but I am scared of SIDS...

Answer
Most SIDS cases occur before the baby is 4 months old, after 6 months they're "out of the woods", then after 12 months they're okay. It's up to you, 6 months seems like the reasonable time to stop using it, but I can totally understand your concern - you're a mum and you worry like every other one of us.

Whenever you choose to stop using it, you'll wake up every 2 hours and listen to hear them breathing - like me! Lol.
