Savannah monitor time!!!!!!!!!?

schanookie

O.K. i have decided after much thought that i am getting a Savannah monitor to add to my reptile family.

i just want some experienced owners opinion's.

set up

when its a hatchling (when i buy it) or possibly slighty older. I'm going to start it off With a 15 gal tank. Nice big hide and nice big water dish.
UVB
75 watt spotlight basking light
and Cypress mulch or reptile carpet.

when it almost gets two feet its moving on to my spare 40 gal critter cage. and when it hits just about 3 and a half or 4 feet of he/she goes to a costume made house. dint worry im good at that part have costume cages for iguana and bearded dragon.

Diet
well as a baby its gonna eat lots of crickets meal worms and small pinkies. when it hits like 2 feet it will eat larger mice XL crickets and possibly feeder roaches, eggs, lighty cooked ground Turkey, and some boiled chicken pieces.

and fruits!!!

but im not entirely sure what kinds of fruits are best can recommend some.

Tame?

well im expectingg it to be a lil feisty in its younger years. but i will do my best to tame it, is that part hard? is your sav tame?

well is there any thing else im missing?

thx for taking the time to read this 10 points for best answer hands down

Answer
Never give a Savannah Monitor fruits, they are not Crested Geckos or Gray's Monitor. I'd prefer to give hard boiled eggs with the shell because it's less messy and has extra calcium. I'd only give pinkies every 2-3 weeks for babies and rats/mice once a month for juveniles and adults because they are very fattening. Give them raw or boiled turkey, never fried, grilled, bake or broiled. Taming is really easy if you get them while they are babies, just handle them daily, hand feed them, walk them and give them treats while you play with them.

Can i keep two different baby monitor species in the same tank temporarily?

Exact

I currently have a baby Quince Tree Monitor in an 80 gallon terrarium and i'm getting baby Black Throat Monitor tomorrow but i don't have a terrarium for him yet. I was wondering if i could keep these two babies together (If they get along) until i find a suitable cage for my black throat. Let me know!
P.S. There are tons of videos on youtube that show different monitor species interacting.
Thanks!

Answer
Anything is possible. But, monitors are usually territorial. They might not get along. You just have to try it out and see how they react to each other. Try putting them next to each other with a pane of glass between them and see what happens. Even if they don't fight you might have other problems. Black throats get stressed easily and sometimes won't even house with other black throats. Stress will cause all sorts of problems. Not eating, bad sheds. you just need to experiment. I would be surprised if it works. I assume, if you have done your research you know that a black throat will grow a lot faster then your quince. Raised properly he will be much larger within months. So don't plan on this being for very long.

Is there any way to use my iPad as a remote baby monitor from my iPhone? Like pull up what the camera sees?

I would like to be able to pull up a live stream on my iPhone 4, from my iPad in a different room. Is this possible without a computer?

Do you believe in using electronics as baby-sitters?

iAnswer

Of course, many of you will answer "no" to this question, but realistically a large chunk of Americans do it.

Put on TV all day for toddlers.
Hand over the iPads.
Hand over the smart phones with games.

This stuff wasn't around when WE were toddlers.

In my opinion, children, young young children shouldn't be exposed to the electronics at all. But you can't hide it, so maybe monitoring the usage to a time limit a day, or a week.

What's your opinion? Are you one of those electronic babysitters?

All opinions respected!

Answer
Im in Australia and I will happily admit that my nearly 3 year old gets our Ipad and our Iphone if I need to get something done, normally maximum of 30 minutes, most definately not all day! And its a distraction/something fun for them to do while mummy is busy and cannot play with them right away.

Once my jobs are done, it's right back to playing on the swings/drawing/painting/tea party's/building cubbies etc..

Picking up other signals through a baby monitor?

Hank

How far of a signal do baby monitors generally have? We just turned off the main end of the baby monitor, and we forgot to turn off the receiving end (the listening end) and we started picking up a signal of a family having a conversation. I didn't think the monitors had that great of a signal? And even so, what is the likelihood of it picking up a signal from something else? (Some other electronic device)

Answer
Typically, a baby monitor can transmit about 100 feet or so, depending upon height, terrain, building's construction material etc.

And yes, the receiver's 'front end' can be overloaded by a transmitter's signal if it is close enough and/or strong enough, and you would hear that transmitter's modulation (the sound).

Question about SIDS. Mom and Dads please answer : )?

sxenerdx <

What is the exact reason you can't put the babies on their tummy to sleep? I personally think it is safer to put them on their tummy than on their back. The day I brought my baby home I laid him on his back to go to bed and he started gagging and choking (on his shit or tongue or something). So I started co-sleeping because I was terrified he was going to choke in his sleep and die. Anyway!! There has been 3 accidents where he was laying on his back and he started throwing up and started choking on his throw up. He couldn't do anything and if I hadn't been in the room he would have choked and died. (Luckily I was in the room) So I have been super paranoid about that and I always have him sleep where I can see him. But it's been wearing on me so I've been trying to have him sleep in his crib during the day (that way I can hear the monitor if anything goes wrong). But every time I put him in hs crib he only sleeps for about 30 minutes.
SO! I was doing tummy time the other day and he fell asleep on his tummy and I let him sleep. (He was in front of me the whole time) And he slept wonderfully!! So I put him in his crib on his belly at his next nap and he slept 5 hours!! He loves being on his tummy!
So I was wondering why is it safer to put them on their backs? Because to me the belly is safer. He can lift his head up wonderfully and scoot himself forwards and sidewards. So if he did throw up he could move himself out of the way.
Thanks for answering. Sorry it's so long : ) I tend to ramble!!
The word that they **** out was SPIT.

Answer
In New Zealand they have been doing a study for 11 years. They use a mattress wrap made of polyethylene. NO baby that has slept on one of these wrapped or organic mattresses has died of sids. NONE of them. Before they started this test, New Zealand had the highest rate of crib death. (2.1 deaths for 1,000 births) Now their rates have fallen by 70%.

After reading this article and doing further study, I really think it's not how you lay the baby but the toxins in the mattress that cause the death. That would explain why having a fan on helps lower the risk. It stirs up the air so the baby isn't breathing in the toxins as much. Read the article, it's full of helpful information. I wish more people knew about it.

epidural/ Pregnancy Help?

Harpreet V

What will you suggest having baby with epidural or without epidural. please share your experience.
Or should I go in with open mind and if it gets too painful then go for epidural otherwise not.

Is epiduaral painful?

Also when you go into the hospital and they check you in and check the blood pressure, monitor the baby what else they do? Do they insert IV even through you decide not to have pain medication.

Answer
Depends on what part of the world you are living in - it's completely different in America say, as opposed to Australia/New Zealand. - So to answer your question - this is such a personal choice! I encourage mums to prepare their mind and body for a drug free birth, but some mums think this is utter crap (pardon my language) and so I will support them 100% down the epidural path - it's her birth/her choice I say! If you do want to go drug free though - start preparing, either by doing breathing/relaxation exercises or meditations. A marathon runner doesn't just run a marathon without training his mind and body and neither should a woman labour without preparing her mind/body. Its a powerful moment in your life - be ready! In America, it seems everyone is "lucky" enough to get an IV - in Oz and NZ, you would never do that to a woman unless she was at risk. Epidurals don't hurt - it's just the local that they put in before the epidural (local stings like a really angry ant bite!). Take care and all the very best xo

Why do I hear my baby crying even when she isn't?

lagjan

Is this just sheer exhaustion, or is this some inborn thing to make me keep checking on her? If it weren't for the baby monitor I would be in her room ever 10 minutes.

Answer
It's common for new moms to have hypersensitive instincts with regards to their new babies, particularly in the early days. It's due to a combination of the protective mother's instinct in humans/animals, the anxiety of being wholly responsible for a new fragile being who is completely dependent on you, and yes, as you said, sheer exhaustion. Instead of being able to rest while their babies are sleeping, many new parents find themselves checking on their newborns multiple times, just to be sure that they're still breathing! It will improve as you gain confidence in your childcare abilities and become acclimated to being a parent. Needless to say, you'll probably still be the first one to hear her crying, the first to feel her pain, and the first to share in her every joy.

3 week old baby, scared to have him sleep in my bedroom?

i have been sleeping downstairs with him because im scared my room is to hot as i sweat at night because its so warm, i don't know how close i can put his basket to my bed. im so paranoid over him

Answer
Well keep in mind that babies need to be a bit warmer than us. So if your room is just a bit warm, baby should be completely comfortable. You could always lower the temperature in your room if the heat is the reason it's so warm, or turn on the air conditioner to help cool it down. You can crack a window or turn on a fan. And you can always dress the baby in less clothing. He doesn't have to be in multiple layers all the time. If a onesie is enough for him to be comfortable, that's fine. If you really don't want him in your room you can always put him in his own room and just put a baby monitor near him.

Which food give my 2year old baby boy?

Kamran

Answer
Bless his little tummy :) Serve foods that are packed with the nutrients he needs to grow healthy and strong, and limit the sweets as much as possible.

I continue to introduce new flavors and textures to my 2 year old daughter to help her develop a taste for healthy foods. She loves all types of fruits and most vegetables.

Here are some of the things she loves:

*Breakfast: Cup of a healthy Whole Grain Cereals mixed with sliced strawberries, blueberries or bananas.
*Lunch: Vegetable soup with a piece of whole-wheat bread (she specially loves broccoli cheddar soup), baked chicken with a side of cooked carrots & mashed potatoes, or brown rice with a medley of green vegetables are a few of her favorites.
*Dinner: Whole-wheat pasta with mozzarella cheese and zucchini.

Remember, as you continue to introduce various types of nuts to your son, it is important to watch closely for any potential allergies. I would also suggest you download our free app, as food recalls are unfortunate common events that can have serious consequences on your child.

Features of the Recalls Plus App include:
â¢Proactively delivers timely recall alerts for the items on your Personal Watch List (a personalized list of the brands and products that you wish to monitor)
â¢Hand curates every product and food recall directly from government agencies (CPSC, NHTSA, FDA, USDA) for relevance to children and consolidates them in one place
â¢Provides parents a simple, easy-to-use solution to track recall information and instantly share it with family and friends.

The Recalls Plus App is available for free from the App Store on iPhone and iPod touch or at http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/recalls-plus/id499200328 and can be accessed on Facebook: http://apps.facebook.com/recallsplus.

care worker with elderly....can anyone mention some SKILLS?

I need this 4 my placement report...and i cannot find any...thx?

Answer
I have worked thru Hospice and on my own and for a National Company. I have certs in medicine assistance, cpr and first aid. You will need to read well, show compassion, do bathing and change diapers and move your client around often to avoid bed sores. Read to them and do laundry and cook and clean and using a baby monitor will give you peace of mind. You need to nap when they nap--if you are doing in home care. You need to know how to deal with friends and relatives, know how to deal with death and what to do when it occurs and have a strong heart and broad shoulders. I have also cooked and cared for mental patients in a private facility. You need to know that their privacy counts. You may have to clean up some horrid messes without a peep. Common Sense is very important.

Has anyone seen the show "The Baby Borrowers" ?

Connor's M

For those who have seen it, what are your thoughts?

For those who are unaware of what it's about, please read below and tell me what you think?

Each week a teenage couple aged 18-20 will set up a home and become parents beginning with a baby, then a toddler, pre-teens, teenagers, and finally elderly adults over the course of one month. The couples will participate in pre-natal classes prior to the arrival of the baby, every three days the couples will advance to the next stage. Some couples may have an only child while some may have the responsibility of taking care of siblings.[1] There are no eliminations or prizes (with the exception of experience).

Married couples volunteered to participate in the experiment by letting the teenage couple "borrow" their child. They would deliver the child to their home, offer advice about how to respond in certain situations and gave a manual with instructions (i.e. child likes/dislikes, favorite food or toys, when to feed them, etc.) The couples cared for the child (or children) away from their parents for 3 days. The parents stayed across the street in a home and were able to monitor their child and the couple on surveillance video that was set up all around the home. If at any time they felt they were needed or wanted to help, they were able to step in. A professional nanny also stayed with the couple and their child and monitored them. The nanny was only allowed to "shadow" to ensure the safety of the child and could only come forth in the event of an emergency. Once the age turned to the teenagers, there was no more parent or nanny monitoring.
___
I think it's a good idea. Like most of us, I just don't think teenagers put alot of thought into what parenting will actually be like. They live life with their head in the clouds and when told that it's not right for having babies at 15, one of their justification is 'Girls did it in the old days". Well, they were also married, had nothing else/weren't allowed to DO anything else and didn't need two incomes to survive.

I'm not bashing accidental teen mothers so for those of you who are, please don't be offended. I'm simply saying that teen girls who DO want to get pregnant.. the naivety is just incredibly frustrating.
There is no monetary gain, simply experience and hopefully a valuable lesson.

Answer
I think it's good for the teens but I don't think it's healthy for the loaned out babies. It's stressful and confusing for them to be taken from their home and put with strangers like that who don't know what they are doing. I mean I know their parents are in the next house watching them on TV and can intervene at anytime, but the babies don't know that and would still be confused.

Whats the best baby monitor?

Kelly Vibe

I am having my first child soon and would like a monitor that has good sound and picture quality day and night so i can make dinner ect and just look at my hand held monitor instead of going in the other room to see why he is making noise.

Answer
angel care, i get so much more rest knowing that angel care is monitoring my baby girl, it takes a little bit to get used to adjusting the sensitivity of the monitor so you dont get false alarms but its the best monitor out there, plus you can use it on into the toldler years when your kido sneaks out of bed the alarm will sound,

the alarm sounds if the monitor does not detect motion or breathing after 20 secs

there is not picture on this monitor but rather a motion detection system, when you go to sleep at night you know rather or not your baby is still moving and ok

Angelcare Movement Baby Monitor?

The Bucket

I'm looking at baby monitors and have some questions about the Angelcare Movement Monitor...so if you have it I would really appreciate some answers! It says that the monitor can detect when your baby stops moving, but wouldn't it be going off all the time when the baby is sleeping? Or is it so sensitive that it detects breathing? And how is the picture quality/night vision picture quality? And is the zoom feature good or does it just make the picture more grainy? Do you recommend this monitor? THANKS!

Answer
I have the angel care monitor without the camera, the way it works is that it has a pad that needs to be put under the mattress, it cant be used under memory foam mattresses it has a sensitivity dial to work under diff mattress types and to detect tiny babies as well. it basically picks up babys breathing and if they have an irregular breath it alarms at 15 sec to warm you with a beep, then if the baby doesnt move again in 5 more seconds it alarms loud to wake the parent and the baby.

Mine worked a dream i followed the instructions carefully and it was brilliant as it also monitored the babys room temp and warned me if it got too hot or cold. the sound was great. we had 2 false alarms because my baby was 6lb and moved to edge of cot where monitor didnt pick up her delicate movements but at least i knew it worked.

i wouldnt have been able to sleep without it to be honest i give it 5 stars, the monitor version came out this year and has been awarded best buy so im guessing its good as well.i would highly recommend it.

Which baby monitor should I buy?

Martha

Hello!
My daughter is 4 months old and realized we've not got a baby monitor! I donât want to be spending too much but after some research I see there is a huge difference in prices from about $30 - $200s.
So what would you recommend, I want a video monitor which doesn't need to have lots of fancy features, only a reliable one.

Thanks!

Answer
I really searched about baby monitors before we bought ours. So here are my tips:

Before buying one,
Think what you need:
Do you want a video or sound only monitor? Do you want motion sensor feature etc.

Know your house and neighborhood, and other wireless devices:
Are walls thick, and do you live in a place with lots of parents. If so select a long range one with multichannel option. If not you will always experience interference problems. Chose a digital baby monitor!

I've been using a video one called Motorola MBP36 - its really good actually and has night vision which is a definite plus, it looks a bit like a really big ipod, which is kind of cool. I live in a house with thick walls and use it with no problem and even in long range the sound and video is very clear. It has many other features too like night vision and temperature alarm.

So I really recommend you to buy a motorola mbp36 baby monitor as Iâm very happy with it.

This Of Items Needed For A Newborn?

Angelica

I Need A List Of The Items Needed For A Newborn & Their Price If You Can. Thanks!

Answer
For a breast fed baby:
Clothes, car seat/stroller/travel system, burp clothes, lots of blankets, gripe water, diapers, wipes, diaper rash cream, infant bath tub with sling, baby soap, washcloths, towels, diaper bag, rubbing alcohol and q-tips for cord, thermometer (I have an Exergen forehead thermometer), nose aspirator (I use the one the hospital gave us)

Things that aren't necessary but are helpful:
My 2-month old sleeps in her Fisher Price Sleep Rocker during the day and was in her reclined swing for the first month and a half but is now in her crib at night. I also have a sheet saver on her crib in case she has a spit up so I won't have to change her sheets.
We used pre-made swaddlers when it she kept waking herself up with her arms/startle reflex. I have since switched to sleep sacks without sleeves because she can't have a blanket and kicks them off all the time anyway.
I use my video monitor whenever she's in her room and love love love it. It's a Motorola MBP36.
Contoured changing pad/cover. I also put waterproof pads over her cover because of accidents during diaper changes and extra poopy diapers.
I have a Medela Swing single electric pump, bottles and nipples for whenever I am too full or need to feed her while we are out. I expressed for 2 days when she was less than a week old because I couldn't wake her to feed her easily and wanted to monitor how much she was eating.
My baby doesn't take pacis, the cat just eats them.
Newborns don't need toys. My 2 month old still can't hold a rattle but I shake it for her and she seems to calm down some.
I use a travel wipe warmer when we are at home. She doesn't like cold wipes.
I use my diaper genie all the time.
Baby lotion
I also have a mobile on her crib but haven't turned it on since she still doesn't really focus on things.

>>> External Audio Interface help <<<?

Joe

hi, i'm looking to buy an external audio interface. which one should i get?
the main reason is to get the best sound quality i can out of my monitors (KRK Rokit 6s)
however it'd be good to be able to plug an instrument or mic or two in as well.
my budget is about £150 roughly (or around $230 for you Americans)
i also need help with the cabling. i think XLR is what i want, but the KRKs also have TRS (and unbalanced RCA). any advice about the different cabling would be much appreciated too.

interfaces i've been looking at already are the M-Audio Fast Track Pro or variations of and the Presonus Audiobox... any other suggestions are welcome.

Thanks!
also, it needs to be able to work with my Windows 7 (64 bit) PC and a MAC laptop i'm getting shortly

Answer
One of the things that you need to be cautious about is the stability of drivers. There are a lot of audio interfaces out there that do the job in terms of hardware and features. But their compatibility with software is horrible due to faulty drivers. Especially since you plan to use that on a 64-bit Windows 7 for a while, driver stability is all the more important.

I would advise you to buy the Focusrite Saffire 6 USB. It is available on Amazon UK for exactly £150. It has 2 microphone/instrument inputs with phantom power. And apart from RCA outputs, it has 1/4'' Phono outputs too(which is exactly the same thing as TRS. This baby's drivers are SO solid that it responds well to anything I throw at it. For my last song, it ran 24 tracks of audio with three plugins on each track! It is built like a tank, so it'll last a while too.

Now in comparison to the M-Audio Fast Track, this is far far better. My friend has the M-Audio, so I have hands on experience with both these interfaces. The pre-amps in the M-Audio are just not as good and the output is a bit muddier. The build quality is not as good, and there are a few latency issues. And more importantly, the drivers are a hit and a miss. So I would advise you to stay away from M-Audio Interfaces. Their keyboards and monitors are great. Interfaces, not so much.

I am not sure about the Presonus as I haven't used it. But this is what I found from a review. And if you are a guitar player this might effect you:

"I tried the PreSonus AudioBox recently and was extremely disappointed with it. I didn't try it with a microphone since I'm usually recording guitars direct, but the preamps are designed to ALWAYS have 20 db of gain being applied even with the input turned all the way down. I looked this up on their official forums, and it is intentional. Because of this, I was never able to get a signal that wouldn't clip when palm muting (even with passive pickups). They don't have any kind of software mixer either, so you have to buy an attenuator pad or find some other workaround.

There's also a knob that you use to blend the mix between the hardware direct monitoring signal and the regular output. Even with the knob turned all the way to the regular output side, you still get some "leak" from the direct signal coming through the monitors. This can cause feedback problems, give you inaccurate monitoring (in my situation, because I'm hearing dry/clean guitar signal at the same time as amp sim VSTs), and is just a general pain in the ass.

And just to add icing on the cake...I also discovered that the output starts digitally clipping with the output knob at only 9 O'CLOCK! Ridiculous."

So in conclusion. I will hands down recommend the Focusrite Saffire 6 USB. And if it is of any good, it is an English company based in High Wycombe (looked up wikipedia). So it is always good to work with a local company as support is far more available. M-Audio support is terrible. Enjoy!

What does an obstetrics appointment involve?

calisia_c

I will be having my first obstetrics appointment when i am 12 weeks pregnant. I remember when i was pregnant 1st time round, i never saw an obstetrician, and saw a midwife instead. So i am wondering what this involves? And also if i am referred to see the obstetrician, does that mean they consider me as high risk?

This will be my first appointment, so im not sure if this will involve the booking appointment, I will also be having my first scan at the same day.

All advice appreciated.

From UK.
Thanks for your reply. Im just abit confused why i am refered to obs, as i had a normal pregnancy. The only thing i think of is i am 1 point over obese. Hope its nothing to worry about though. :S

Answer
Obstetrician appointment - will discuss your medical history, previous pregnancy and birth, information on father to be, your current pregnancy, your due date, will take bp, maybe ultrasound (if obs has machine in office). It is a get to know you and your history and where you currently are at.

My first pregnancy i saw a midwife, 2nd pregnancy i requested an obstetrician, my 3rd (current) pregnancy, i automatically went back to my obs.

Being referred to an obs can mean your pregnancy is higher risk or it needs more monitoring, but this is not always he case.

My first pregnancy ended at 24 weeks when her heart stopped beating. My 2nd pregnancy was not considered high risk and i had the option of midwife or obs. I personally chose an obs, i wanted the special treatment, the regular reviews, a doctor. She was lovely, she also was/is into fetal medicine/research and reviewed my lost daughters autopsy/results and researched this further for me, but still no answers. She was caring, thorough, professional, observant and very reassuring.
Even though neither were high risk, previous pregnancy and current, i don't regret obs over a midwife. No offense to midwives, they are trained and do a great job, but for me, a specialist was reassuring even though not needed.

Good luck and congratulations

Add:
Surely that wouldn't be the case, if it is that's weird :)
An obs is no bother, just more qualified than a midwife. If you had no problems with your first then your situation is unusual or the midwife/place is unusual. You can always ask the obs why you were referred, the are pretty honest most of the time.
Try not to worry, midwife or obs, your baby and you are being looked after :)
In Australia, those with private health insurance automatically go to obs for private hospitals for normal healthy pregnancies, where as midwifes treat/monitor public patients.

Me and my partner are trying to have baby but its nt coming along so easy !?

I would like to hear from the woman who have PCOS and have had children im very interested in knowing how it happened. my partner and i are having difficulties and dont know what to do. PCOS (Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome)

Answer
ok, firstly I am aware I am not a woman :) but my wife has PCOS.

She started taking clomid 50mg (cycle days 3-8) last year, we got pregnant twice and unfortunately lost both (2012 was a rough year).

This year the 50mg wasn't working, upped to 100mg still not working consistently. So they put her on metformin too (500mg twice daily). We went for an ultrasound to look for follicles on cycle day, no mature follicles but some tiny ones. I asked if she could ovulate late and the drs told me it should make her ovulate on day 14. Great, now what do we do? About a week later she gets the egg white mucous (I know tmi) and I said "hey why not, what we got to lose"... we did a pregnancy test negative. So she takes progesterone to restart cycle and gets 'flu' and throwing up a few days later . The regular dr kept asking "are you sure you're not pregnant?" so we did a test POSITIVE ! I guess they were wrong, you can ovulate late.

Today we saw our 19 week baby girl wiggling around on ultrasound.

Sorry for the long story, first they'll try either metformin or clomid, or both but it may take awhile to find the correct dose, find a reproductive endocrinologist not just a OB/GYN and if you do get pregnant do what I did insist on taking progesterone through first trimester, or as worst monitor your levels closely. I beleive that, and we kept taking metformin too, saved our baby this time :) There is a high risk of miscarriage with PCOS, like 40% but progesterone brings it down to the same rate as everyone else, I think 16%.

What and how much should I feed my baby(?) Betta?

Calvin Y.

It's a lot to read but I'd really appreciate good, honest answers.

I got a brand new Betta fish Sunday afternoon, along with a small-ish sized tank (small as in it fits on my computer desk, which isn't too huge. But I'm not sure if it's quite a gallon and I didn't think to check before tossing the box). I'm pretty sure it's a baby, or should be pretty young. I have a couple questions regarding the care of my Betta. ( I know they're easy to take care of but I want to make sure he's happy, healthy and lives long).

1. Winter is coming and so far the only heating he really gets is from his tank being right next to my hooded, flexible desk lamp; which I shine towards him, but not right in his face from 4am to about 2:45pm. Also the heat from the house. I put my fingers in his tank every so often to make sure it's not super cold and so far it feels barely colder than lukewarm. Should I dump the tank and put in warmer water?

2. I work at a CITGO/Subway, and by the end of my shift the little bins that the Subway ingredients are in (the ones right at the counter) have little scraps of bacon, cucumber slices, chicken, etc. left in there. I usually toss them but I've heard Bettas enjoy tasty food. I've recently begun contemplating putting some of the scraps like bacon or cucumber in a ziplock bag in my fridge to feed him in the morning. But I've also heard that once they've tasted something better than pellets, they won't eat them anymore. Also I'm not sure if Subway would be healthy for the fish.

3. Reflecting on 2, how often should I feed him? Sunday, I gave him 3 pellets of Betta food when I got home and Monday I gave him 1 in the morning (6am) and 3 right before work (6pm). Should I cut back? I feel like 3 every other day, like the PetSmart lady said is a little sketchy, and they would want it to be unhealthy and die so I 'have to get a new one'.

4. This will probably factor in all the previous questions: How old should I assume my Betta is? He wasn't the smallest one at the store, he's maybe a bit less than an inch long, without his tail included (from memory, the light is off and I don't want to disturb him by turning it back on)

I know that's a lot to read, but any help would be much appreciated! I love my fish and I want him to live at the very minimum a year, which still isn't long. Thanks for any help!

Here's a couple pictures of the fish up close and the tank next to my 23" monitor, if it will help determine if the tank is OK for now, and maybe his age if you can guess that by size.

Answer
There are many fry food that are easily available and can be found at home. For example, mixing a small piece of egg yolk from a hard boiled egg with water makes an excellent liquid food with plenty of protein good for fry. You can also get a jar of conditioned water and put a leaf of lettuce in it. Leave it out in the sun and when the water turns green, take a few drops of the water and put it in the fry tank. The green water is filled with microscopic critters, or infusoria.

baby monitor?

dirty4dirt

Any suggestions for a decent one for under 100? The reviews I've read in the $50 range haven't been great but any suggestions would be helpful.
I was looking at just a traditional monitor. I would like to spend under $50. Its hard to go by alot of reviews online because most people live in subdivisions with alot of activity.. I dont. I live in the boonies hah.. so maybe interference wouldnt be as bad..

Answer
I have the Graco Ultra Clear II Monitor with Nightlight. It was about $29 and I've been using it for 10 months with minimal problems. It gets really good reviews considering it's priced so low. Once or twice I have gotten a little static sound from it but it went away quickly and only came from the part I keep downstairs (basically the part that is upstairs with the sleeping baby has never had that problem). I do a lot of product research before I buy and it seems when it comes to non-video monitors even the pricey ones have problems.

What Is a good Baby Monitor?

Pam

I've been looking on amazon for a baby monitor but it seems like all the reviews i read contradict each other. i was hoping someone could compare the experiences they had with baby monitors and talk about which brands they loved or hated

Answer
Hi Pam,

It depends on your budget and what you want from a baby monitor. Basically there are three ways of monitoring; audio, video, or movement sensing. Generally the cheaper baby monitors are just audio ones, and the more expensive options use video. For under $100, I can recommend the Angelcare Baby Movement and Sound Monitor or for a video monitor, the Levana Jena. For higher end baby monitors, the Samsung SEW-3037W and the Levana Astra are both good choices.

need a good baby monitor that will reach my upstairs?

ahhhhhhhhh

My babies room is down stairs and my room is upstairs my monitor will not reach my room since my house is a little large. what is a good monitor that isnt too pricey that can reach up stairs?

Answer
i bought a safety first monitor, it's super cheap but honestly it is the best monitor ever. My older kids' go to school across the street and one day my son was napping at the time i was to pick them up, I tested it out and it worked ( a little static but I could still hear him breathe). I stayed at my cousins house a few months ago and she had this really pricey monitor, it was crap, her house wasn't even that big!

hope this helps!

Can you keep a savannah monitor in the same cage for its whole life?

Ethan

I want to get a Savannah Monitor as a baby but I was wondering if I built a 9x4x4 Terrarium if it would be comfortable in that as a baby and as a juevinile. Please reply as fast as you guys can because I really need to know!

Answer
Its best to keep it in a cage according to how big it is so its not too far from his hides, food, water at any given time, considering you have a small monitor in an extra large cage. If its too big rather than too small it shouldn't be much of an issue but if its too small, that's not good at all. To answer your question, yes you can keep a savannah monitor in the same cage his whole life given that that cage will be fit for him and is big enough for him considering how big it he will be when fully grown. There are the pros and cons of having a baby monitor in a cage that is big enough to house an adult in but as long as you take care of him and monitor the monitor he will be fine. By he I mean he/she.

Best Baby Monitor?

@>*~Be@ut!

I am researching monitors. I am looking for one with a camera, but I know some of them work better than others. Any suggestions on which one gives the best picture? Which one has less static? I've heard so many different reviews. I found one that I really like....

http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2943603&fromRegistryNumber=44067222&product_skn=760504

But the price is a bit high. I am also looking for 1 that has the option to add a 2nd camera. I have a 3 year old daughter also, and it would be nice to be able to watch her too.

Answer
We own this camera and overall LOVE it. We really like the fact that the screen is large. We tend to get a clear picture although sometimes there is some flickering. We remedy this by just moving it a little bit. It does not pose much of a nuisance for us. We can also move it around the house and not worry about it sucking up a ton of batteries (this was a major issue with our previous monitor - it just gobbled up batteries). We have never gotten images of other people. No issue there.

Warning though: It does not have the best audio. The lowest setting is somewhat loud for my tastes. However, we did not care about the audio as we can hear our baby cry just fine. Also, there are also only two channels with this monitor so you don't have a lot of room to search for a better connection.

If you want great audio to go with the screen, I would recommend looking into some monitors with small screens. The only downside to those is the battery issue.

On a final note, I would absolutely recommend investing in a video monitor. We used to have a regular audio monitor but kept rushing in every time we heard the baby cry. Unfortunately, many times she was just yelling in her sleep and we were the ones waking her up. The video monitor allows us to see if she is really awake or just in transition sleep. Lately, she has been rolling over in her sleep and it allows me to keep track of her. Great purchase!

Best baby monitors?

Q. What baby monitor do you have or do you think is the best? There are so many different ones and I dont know which one to get. Thanks.

Answer
I have the simple FisherPrice system with one base and two "walkie talkies." I got that one because a lady at Babies R Us was returning the video monitor because she said it was a waste of money and you can never get a clear picture. Her sister had the one I mentioned and loved it. I also loved it was only $25.00.

Internet access, but no network access.?

annishia h

I have a laptop and a desktop computer, both with Windows 8. The desktop computer says I have Internet access, and everything is fine, no problems. The laptop, however, says I have Internet Access, but no Network Access. I see this when I hover over the bar icon in the task bar. It looks similar to this:

[Network Name]
Internet Access
Network
No Internet Access

My laptop is significantly slower because of this. Anyone please help?
Note: Both machines are like brand new, the laptop is from Christmas of 2012 and the desktop was purchased the beginning of this year (2013).

Answer
If you have Internet access on the laptop then you must have network access.

Here is how it works,

A router connects two separate networks and manages the traffic between them.

A typical home router connects your local group of computers and devices known as the LAN with the Internet, commonly called the WAN or Wide Area Network.

There are two types of connections that can be made between your computers and other devices and the wireless router.

1. Ethernet cable connections.
2. WiFi wireless connections.

A Ethernet connection is referred to as a LAN connection and shows the network icon that you referred to.

A WiFi connection is referred to as a WLAN connection and has a different icon that looks like a triangle with five vertical bars. When you have only a WiFi the Ethernet icon will show as no connection.

That being said,

Both WiFi and Ethernet connections give you access to your router and home network. Your router also can share a broadband Internet connection with all of the devices connected to it.

Although WiFi is convenient for mobility, wireless interference can cause it's connection speed and quality to vary wildly.

Wireless signals are affected by many factors including distance, wall density, electrical interference, directional antenna range, etc.

All of these factors will affect your actual wireless range. As wireless connection quality varies the connection speeds are renegotiated. The WLAN connection may start at 150 Mbps and end up at less than 10 Mbps or drop entirely.

For serious gaming or video streaming your best bet is a direct Ethernet connection. Ethernet is unaffected by wireless interference and will give you a rock solid, stable network connection.

For stationary devices I recommend Ethernet connections, however this is impractical for devices such as tablets, iPods, cell phones, etc.

You should try to centrally locate your wireless router or gateway up high and away from dense walls and electrical and 2.4 GHz wireless interference such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, baby monitors, etc.

If you still have a weak wireless signal you can either get a wireless extender or a wireless adapter with better range for your WiFi device.

Wireless adapters come in many types and sizes, you may want a high power USB model with external antennas. http://www.amazon.com/s/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&keywords=high%20power%20wireless%20adapter&linkCode=ur2&qid=1374458138&rh=n%3A13983791%2Ck%3Ahigh%20power%20wireless%20adapter%2Cp_72%3A2661618011&rnid=2941120011&tag=excharge-20

Devices such as wireless extenders can expand your wireless range. The wireless range extender receives weak wireless signals and repeats them to extend the signal range to greater distances. Some models include Ethernet port(s) in addition to the wireless radio.

Here are the two most popular highly rated models on Amazon.

Good Luck...

Baby Registry Help PLEASE?

Torie

I am starting my registry for my first baby and I have registered at Target and Babies R Us and I have a few questions. First, should I put the same items on both registries? Next, I am having a rather large baby shower (50 guests) because we both have large families so I want to put enough items on my list but I'm not sure if I should ask for things that baby will need months after she is born like a potty chair, teethers, stuffed animals, etc. I feel like I should just register for the really important stuff that I will need for when the baby first comes home and I can slowly buy that kind of stuff later down the line as I need it. I'm going off the check list babies r us gave, but I am only like half way done and already have like 70 things on my list! Also, I heard that a lot of people don't even buy things off your registry and just buy whatever they feel you need, and in that case I don't know why I'm wasting my time doing research trying to find out what is the best, trying to get things that will match the nursery, and how much of what I need if they aren't even gonna look at it! Sorry if I seem edgy I have just been working on this for a few days now off and on and I'm getting very frustrated.

Answer
First of do you know what you are having?
If you don't then make a long list of neutral baby clothes for the summer that's coming up. Also make sure you ask for doubles or more of everything, and get many of clothing items in larger sizes. Make sure just in case to get a few Preemie baby clothes just in case.

Also I would also like to recommend both http://www.diapers.com/ , and http://www.babyearth.com/ . For registry. I don't like the Target selection, and what ever these sites don't have Babies R Us might have extras or back ups.

Also here is a list I came up with, with a few helpful item idea's.

Whats wrong with my wireless internet?

julie

My wireless internet disconnects every 5 - 20 minutes. Then after about 30 seconds it will reconnect?
I've had different guys come out here four times already. I've tried changing the channels to 11 and everything. We've had the router replaced already, but that wasn't the problem either. Can anybody help this situation? Its a comtrend ASDL router.

Answer
Other wireless devices such as cordless phones, baby monitors, wireless cameras/surveilence equipment can interfere with your wifi signal, if you have any of these devices turn them off and see if your wifi connectivity improves. If it does, you could try using different wifi channels to find one that doesn't conflict with the broadcast channel the offending device/s is using. Also other wifi networks in close proximity to yours (ie: neighbours' wifi networks- especially if you live in an apartment complex) can interfere with your wifi, again you can try different channels, there is no particular advantage or benefit in setting to channel 11 specifically. If you are useing the same phone line for telephones and ADSL make sure you have line filters connected to each phone and your modem in your house. Check that the phone cable from the wall to your modem is good and that this cable is no longer than it needs to be, the shorter the better.

Wireless router connection interferes with baby monitors?

Lucia

Ok I am not that computer-savvy so please bear with me...yesterday we switched from a modem connection for our high-speed internet, to using a wireless router. We have two babies at home and we use baby monitors for their rooms, and since installing the router we are getting tons of loud static/interference on the baby monitors, we tried switching channels but nothing works. I asked the provider about putting a filter on the modem but they said it's not doable. This is probably not the most common problem out there but we are wondering if anyone has any suggestions that could help? (besides switching back to wire modem) - thanks!

Answer
Hello,
And yes, that's possible that these two devices are interfering with each other.

If your router has this feature (or your baby monitor), try changing the frequency. If not, try moving the devices as far away from each other.

I hope this helps. Best answer, please!
