Do you think corded phones are better than cordless phones?

hugo_miteb

Silly question but I was just wondering what you thought. Cordless phones are annoying. They have horrible quality, receive interference from just about any other device sharing the same network. Plus they need power to operate, so they are useless in a power outage. And there also in some ways a security breach. You can easily listen into a conversation with a baby monitor. And to top it off they lack most features that corded phones offer. So what's your opinion?

Answer
You clearly haven't used a modern cordless phone. A good digital cordless phone is unlikely to see any interference with much of anything, the link quality is indistinguishable from wired, and no, you cannot hear the call with a baby monitor. That's not to say that those things have not historically been problems, just that they're problems largely solved in pretty much all modern gear.

One good idea is to get a cordless phone system that does not collide with a home network or your microwave. Look for a 5.8GHz digital phone or a DECT (runs around 1.9MHz), rather than a 2.4GHz phone, which uses the same ISM radio band as your microwave, 802.11 network, X-Box 360, Sony PS3, Bluetooth phone, etc.

With that all said, yeah, I have a few wired phones as well as the cordless. Of course, this may also depend on how you get your phone service... if you're using POTS (plain old telephone system) phones, a corded phone is useful in a blackout. If you're on VoIP, FiOS, DSL, or Cable, there's a strong likelihood your network gear in the house goes down anyway, so the cordless phone is unlikely to be an issue.

I'm very happy with my digital 5.8GHz phones... one wired connection for a base station that supports up to eight handsets (I have four), phone to phone intercom system built-in, great range, enough to cover my house (4200ft^2) and the immediate areas outside (if I want to go for a walk in the woods AND talk on the phone, I'll use my cell).

Whats the difference in Hz mean in baby Monitors? Does more Hz mean clearer sound or farther range?

ex_boxer27

Looking into baby monitors and some only have 50hz when others have 950hz. I know that a hz = 1 cycle per second, just dont know what difference it makes in the monitor, clarity, range, interference, etc??

Answer
Those are different specs. But I doubt they matter at all.

50Hz or 60Hz is the AC power frequency, and is just the frequency required.

The 950Hz, I don't know, you will have to provide more details.

Answer
Well, before you travel make sure that you know that you will pay customs fees on entrance for every electrical item and your bag will be checked by the customs officers. Electrical items are hot taxing items by law. Will your profit making plan still be worth it?!
If you are able to pay duty and know exactly what you are doing...
*Wiiii and games and accessories at a good price
*i phone - people either love it or hate it
*Unusual things like baby monitors/walkie talkies
*PDAs are not for sale in Egypt but professional people do want them (HP / Palm TX / DEll 51 / etc)
* The Nokia N95 and similar phones are very popular but not sold in the major shops due to s'thing to do with it's gps

People want good high tech items at low prices.

Also remember that most things are available in Egypt now we are moving up in the world...!

What do you do when the baby has a hole in his heart?

boobah:)

Ok, so my mom is pregnant and she's 4 months preg so she went to get a ultrasound scan....i think thas what you call it. and well the baby has a hole in his heart but he's still moving. my mom is 36 and she her ulcers hurt recently....so i'm wondering what can be done. to heal the baby's heart. i mean what can my mom do? please help. thanks

Answer
It depends on the situation. My daughter has a heart defect that was found at a 20 week ultrasound. In our situation, they monitored her by doing echo-cardiograms throughout the pregnancy - it is like a high-tech ultrasound that focuses on the heart. We met with a pediatric cardiologist and reviewed our options - some holes will close themselves, others require treatment - every situation is a bit different. We delivered her via c-section at 37 weeks and the cardiac team was waiting. They immediately evalutated her condition and she ultimately had surgery and will need another near surgery in the future.

I am not surprised that her ulcers are acting up - it is so stressful. There is really not very much that can be done while the baby is still inside (some doctor have successfully attempted in-utero surgery but it is very rare) - try to relax, take it day by day, talk to your doctors - maybe meet a pediatric cardiologist. Tour the NICU, find the best doctors you can . . .most babies are just fine and they can do amazing things with science!

Be there for your mom - she needs you.

Keeping you in my thoughts!

Can anyone reccommend any good monitors? Alot of my friends are registering for the Summer Infant Video Monitor from Babies R Us, but I've seen that they got horrible reviews. Any help?

Answer
That happens to be the monitor I have and I absolutely love it. I can see my baby when she sleeps. It has saved me many trips to her room worrying if something was wrong. She is now 13 months old. The best part is, I just had a second baby 3 weeks ago and when I put her in her crib I wont have to buy another monitor. Just another video that will hook up to the second channel on the actual monitor so all I have to do is switch channels to see my girls sleeping. That's the one I would have recommended for you.

Does anyone know of a heart monitor that works during pregnancy?

Tina S

I had seen the Babies-R-Us one had bad reviews I was hoping someone knew of a sucessful product.
where can i get a heart monitor that works?

Answer
I found a good one on Amazon.com that I've been using and I find the heartbeat every time. It's only $25 dollars, so if it works then awesome, obviously you haven't shelled out tons of money and if it doesn't.. well obviously you haven't shelled out a ton of money! lol. I love it, and you can hook it up to a computer or your stereo system at home to let everyone else hear the baby. Or use a good pair of headphones and listen on your own. I just use a little bit of lotion or baby oil and works good :) I can find the heartbeat within a minute. Never once have I 'not found it' so I haven't been stressed out.. and obviously if you don't find it, don't stress either the baby could be laying in a weird position. It'll be quick sounding... like a train or a horse, much faster than your own. I'll post the link below!

What is the problem with my toshiba satellite and what are my options?

Heber

I have an older Toshiba Satellite running Vista, I think its like an '07 laptop (if I remember correctly). I want to look through all my pictures and transfer them onto my new HP Windows 8 laptop. I run into the issue that my lap top's monitor will not cut on, however the laptop itself is on (due to the fact that the power light is lit and you can hear the fan working, and the cd tray retracts when I push the button). Now, I have tried to connect the Toshiba to my tv through s video and vga, it didn't work. And now I tried my vga to my HP (I haven't tried usb from computer to computer). Here's the thing, I connect my iphone with the charging cable to my HP and it began to charge, however when I did the same on my Toshiba it would not charge. I am now beginning to think it is a deeper problem than just the monitor. I need to know if my monitor is not working for the same reason my ports are not working, what may have caused this issue, and finally what are my options? I cannot lose these picture because they are of my 3 year old daughter's baby pics and these are the only ones I have.

Also, this laptop has spent about a year turned off collecting dust, even when it is off for a day the battery is completely out of juice so I have to charge it every time I want to attempt to turn it on. I want to know my options from cheapest to more expensive; further, acquiring the pictures so that I can have them on my new computer and printing them is the only thing i care about, getting music and docs that I have is not important but would be nice to have.

Answer
Turn your Toshiba laptop over ad remove the Hard Drive from the compartment.
It will probably be IDE type so you can get a caddy for it and then connect that HD to your new laptop and copy your data over to your new system.
Once our done getting all your files then FORMAT the "old" HD this will then give you an external storage device that you can use to keep your important files on if you want.

Best way to track my fitness with iPhone apps?

philscalis

I have a degree in exercise science and am going to school for physical therapy now and really want to track my fitness now that I have an iPhone and I know the importance of health. However, after researching apps I'm not sure the best app or app combination to use. I want to get a heart rate monitor (wahoo or polar?) and many of the apps will sync with it. I want to track calories, GPS run mapping capabilities, nutritious intake, and I want to track my strength training regimen (sets, reps, etc). The my fitness pal app seems to do some of these things and you can also tie in other apps or sync them with it. However there are so many other ones and I want to know the best way to do this if anyone can help. So far I have downloaded: my fitness pal, endomondo, fitocracy, sportstracker, runkeeper, real intelligence fitness app, and digifit icardio. If someone can help me out it would be much appreciated. I would try them out but don't want to give my info and make an account for all of these apps if they aren't what I want.

Answer
I track some of the same stuff you do, but not everything and I've tried some of the products you have, but not all. However, here's my take:

1. I use Runkeeper as my basic app. I'm primarily a runner and so are most of my friends. It links easily to facebook if you are interested in that. For me, this is how I communicate with my running community. It has some other basic cardio functions in it as well (elliptical, etc)
2. Runkeeper has a GPS function to be used with the iphone, it's generally accurate within 0.1-0.3 mile. However, when I want to be really accurate, I still default to my garmin which I can still link to my Runkeeper account. (ie, when I'm racing or want to track elevation)
3. Realize also that when you use GPS function on your phone, it will wear down the battery very quickly. I'll use the Runkeeper GPS function if I'm running or cycling an hour or less, but it's not ideal for long distances.
4. Runkeeper and probably most fitness apps will link to a heart rate monitor. However, I'd first ask why you intend to use one? As a PT, myself, I've come to the realization that unless you have a medical condition that warrants it, tracking heart rate is overly burdensome for little pay off. Just used your rate of Rate of Perceived Exertion. Whether you are doing intervals or tempo workouts, it's your exertional effort that's the real issue. Most of the established "guidelines" for heart rate during exercise were established for patients recovering from cardiac events, not necessarily for healthy adult fitness. So, unless you want to get into research about cardiac effort, I'd say don't bother. I suppose you can use it if you want to get a MORE accurate idea of your caloric burn, but I have better options for that (more later). I DIDN"T use one for years, mostly because I take a beta blocker which throws the whole target heart rate out the window anyway. I'm using one now (more on that in a minute) only because I'm pregnant and NEED to make sure my heart rate doesn't go over a certain amount (and I have arguements about that anyway). I use the iphone app with it, but haven't linked it to my RK. It does record it on the wahoo site, but I never go back and look at it. The wahoo site also does GPS and if you get the hardware, you can link it with your bike or a foot pod.
5. If you do want to use a HR monitor, I use the wahoo. My husband and I both have Garmin 910XT's and even though he got the heart rate monitor for it, he's happier with the wahoo. Again, he's not even using it anymore and I am. However, I don't even bother logging my heart rate...I use it only as a warning system. I do think I can link it with RK, but haven't bothered. Once I have the baby, I'll stop using it. Not sure why hubby doesn't like the garmin monitor...I just took his word for it.
6. Now, onto strength. RK doesn't really have a place to log this. I used MapMyRun for awhile which at least gave me an idea of how long I was weight lifting and an approximation of calories. In my opinion, if you are looking for an app that does everything, I'd say be prepared for a really complicated app. I found that the more features it has, the less user friendly it becomes. This is how I felt about MMR. For strength training, I'd consider a separate app. Same thing goes for nutrition. There are probably apps out there designed just for that which are much more user friendly.
7. Back to calorie counting. All the apps give you a basic ESTIMATION of your calories burned based on your weight and work out parameters. Even if you are using a heart rate monitor, again, this is only an ESTIMATE. Unless you are in a lab, all these tools provide estimates only. However, if you really want to know what your body is using and burning, I'd recommend the Body Media System. It's about as accurate as you can get with calorie count without having to be in a lab. The web app also has a nutritional log.

So here's my take in a nutshell:
1. Use a basic app for your cardio. Runkeeper is my personal favorite. Only use the GPS for shorter workouts
2. Use a separate GPS (I've only used garmins) if you want to be really accurate with your distance or if you are doing a long work out and simply sync it to your cardio app (like RK) from the garmin site.
3. Don't bother with a HR monitor unless you have a medical reason to do so
4. Use a separate app for your weight lifting and nutrition.
5. Consider a body media system if you REALLY want an accurate calorie count. It's expensive new, but I got a Core basic system used on ebay for $32. (myself, I'm content using the basic estimates from my cardio app).

Maybe there's an app that does everything, but I find that it gets too complicated....I don't want to spend 30 minutes logging my info.

How to make old iphone 3g as Home Spy Camera?

Trueme

I have two iPhones, the old iPhone 3g and the new iPhone 4s. now i wanted to use my old iphone 3g (iOs version updated) as a Home Spy Camera and wanted to watch my kids at home live stream to my new iPhone 4s while im at work. i also got my Home Wifi network. is there any best iphone application out there for this matter? or is it possible to use my Home IP address to use and access it for this concept?

Answer
There are many training videos telling us how to make iphone as home spy camera on line.
Um...I've found two:
1. http://www.wonderhowto.com/how-to-use-iphone-as-spy-camera-423938/
2. http://www.wonderhowto.com/how-to-make-iphone-secret-spy-camera-423940/
The second video looks like very easy to access, but I don't know if it is useful for you.

If these two ways are not fit, I suggest you to buy a Baby Monitor or Home Spy Camera. You can visit this online store:
http://www.accessbuy.com/wholesale-Baby-Monitor_120.html
http://www.accessbuy.com/wholesale-IP-Camera_113.html
It's a wholesaler, so its price is very low.

its like any girl 18 or older has a kid, is not with the kids father, has had many many sexual partners, and then always bitches they dont get child support or dont get enough (even if he pays what hes required to) its just never enough. its always "im gonna raise this baby" attitude and constant change in boyfriends, which of course leads to police visits when she wants him out over nothing, then restraining orders over BS and court. why are girls so slutty. they cant keep it in their pants either.

Answer
It's not any, it's just that 20% of sexually active females, over the age of 12, as actively trying to get pregnant. Tyra Banks featured the study on her TV show. It has nothing to do with child support, it has to do with having something they can own and have 100% control of. It's the idea that they can, so why not just do it. And, they do not have to have sex with the father of the child.

With the growth of the Self Insemination Kit industry, they can obtain kits, online, with full instructions on how to use semen after oral sex, or from a used condom, to attempt pregnancy. Spermicide in condoms have a very short shelf life, and those imported are not closely monitored by our government to determine even if it is spermicide being put in them. The industry has resisted government oversight. This means the boy can have sex with one girl, oral or with a condom, and she can than help a female friend get pregnant with it. An Illinois Doctor was ordered to pay child support the a woman who did this after oral sex, though he has been allowed to sue for for damages.

As for child support, this is petty issue to raise. There are by far worse ones.

Consider that a Michigan 12 year old boy has sex with the woman who takes care of him when his parents want to go to dinner or a movie. The woman gets pregnant, but she is married, so her husband thinks the child is his. The boy doesn't report the sex as boys are often taught that if they get "lucky" with an older woman, that is suppose to be great.

Now, 14 years later the woman is in the middle of a divorce with her husband, and he files for custody. She counters that he is not the father, so he can't get custody. However, she cannot now collect child support from him, so she files and is awarded a 14 year retroactive order on the "bio" dad. She couldn't be charged as the statute of limitations has run out which was the law for the time the act was committed, and old cases could not be grandfathered in under the new law.

A case in the news just recently involving a 13 year old Ohio boy, and a 19 year old girl, Jane C. Crane. He gets her pregnant and is ordered to pay $50 a month in child support, to be paid by his parents. The girl went to jail, however the child is now in the care of her mother. The boy cannot file for custody due to his age, and his parents do not have standing int he court.

In all states, underage males, who have sex with an adult, can be required to pay child support.

Child tells neighbor how mother, grandmother and 'daddy' died
September 27, 2011|By Linda Trischitta and Rafael A. Olmeda, Sun Sentinel

SUNRISE — The voice of a terrified 5-year-old girl, who had just seen her mother and grandmother shot to death by the man she called daddy, was captured on the recording of a 911 call released by Sunrise police on Tuesday.

The girl was the only witness to Sunday's murder-suicide at the Del Rio Village townhouses. Immediately after the shootings, the girl ran to a neighbor's house and pleaded for help. The neighbor called 911, but the girl's heartbreaking voice is clearly heard on the recording made of the call.

"She's dead," the girl said of her mother, Danielle M. Lorenzo, 30. "My grandma's dead and my daddy's dead."

"How do you know this?" the neighbor asked.

"Because," the girl answered, "I saw them."

Police confirmed on Tuesday that the weapon, a Walther PPK handgun, was fired by Marcus Nathaniel Trotman, 26, who fatally shot Lorenzo and her mother, Linda Scudera, 56, before turning the gun on himself Sunday evening.

Trotman and Lorenzo had been married for 18 months.

"Can I, can I live here?" the girl asked her neighbor as police were dispatched to the home on the 4000 block of Del Rio Way. "My daddy, my mommy and my grandma are dead and I need somewhere to live."

On Tuesday afternoon, Broward Family Court Judge Susan Greenhawt held a custody hearing for the girl and an older brother, whose whereabouts were not discussed. The girl has been staying with a baby sitter, with the Department of Children & Families monitoring as custody issues are resolved. A man claiming to be the girl's biological father was in court Tuesday and agreed to a DNA test to verify paternity.

If he's determined to be the girl's father, he would be awarded custody pending a review of his family's home by state officials.

Media reports have linked the recovered handgun to a local radio host, DJ Laz.

"Apparently he was friends with Marcus, but it has not been confirmed it was DJ's gun," said Sunrise Police Sgt. Rodney Hailey. "He's missing one with the same make and model, but serial numbers have not been matched yet."

Trotman held a security guard license but did not have a permit to carry a concealed weapon, Sunrise police said.

According to Broward County court records, Trotman was arrested Aug. 21 by Sunrise police and charged with battery.

On Sept. 16, Trotman was arraigned on two counts of misdemeanor battery/domestic violence against Scudera and Lorenzo, said Ron Ishoy, spokesman for the State Attorney's Office.

Trotman pleaded no contest and was put on probation after Scudera filed a waiver of prosecution, Ishoy said.

As a condition of his probation, Trotman was not to have contact with his wife or mother-in-law, and was required to participate in a batterers' intervention program, as well as Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and anger management classes, Ishoy said.

Answer
Yes, it does... and I hate bring race into this or to race bait, but things like this are why I wouldn't tolerate any of my sisters being with black men. As sad as this is, it isn't uncommon to hear about it. Just like it isn't uncommon for them (not to generalize) to rape and smile or laugh when on trial, or to kill someone because they didn't have enough money. Now a little girl is alone without her mother because that animal took her away.

Transmission Band1.9 GHz? what does that mean when it comes to phones for examplez
American Telecom 1.9 GHz and is $36.00 a good price for this type of phone. im trying to buy a house phone that is cheap that is why im asking.

Answer
1.9Ghz is the RF that the handset and base communicate with each other.. that is the frequency that DECT phones operate on... it will provide better range compared to 2.4 and 5.8Ghz phones..

with radio waves the LOWER the frequency the FURTHER the range...

also, since DECT/1.9Ghz has been set aside for cordless communications there is no other consumer wireless devices in this frequency range such as in the 2.4Ghz range, where there is wifi, wireless video cameras, baby monitors, microwave ovens and other devices...

Is there a good landline phone, with LOUD volume & LOUD speakerphone, that works with Hearing Aids?

Dubber

I've heard there are telephones out there for the hearing impaired but what I am looking for is a land line telephone for my parents who wear hearing aids but refuse to wear them when using the phone. Both say they get ringing and feedback when using a cordless phone while wearing hearing aids, but when they remove them the volume of the phone isn't sufficient.

So...I am looking for a land line base phone, with speaker phone, and better than average volume and sound clarity. If possible, the phone system would come with one or more cordless phones, also with exceptional volume and sound clarity. Oh, I should also mention that they, and I, are very limited financially so can't spend a lot on this.

If a phone with these features doesn't exist, is there some sort of device that can be attached to the phone to increase volume and sound clarity?

Somewhat related, can anyone define a few things for me:

What is the difference between a 5.8 GHz, DEC 6.0, 9 GHz, and some other numbers and acronyms I can't recall atm.

Thank you for your help!

Kay

Answer
there are plenty of hearing aid compatible telephones http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/PNAEndecaSearchCmd?N=779832047&No=0&Nr=12001&Ns=&Ntk=MainSearch&URL=vShopSearch&cmTag=true&catalogId=13401&storeId=15001&Ntt=hearing+aid+compatible&cm_sp=SiteSearch-_-MainSearch-_-Consumer

DECT - Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications these phones operate in the 1.9Ghz frequency range - an unlicensed spectrum that the FCC has set aside strictly for cordless telephones.. this is the latest and greatest in cordless phone technology...

5.8Ghz operates in this unlicensed spectrum, there are some other consumer wireless devices that operate in this spectrum, but it is one of the least crowded frequencies - however since it is the highest frequency cordless phone on the market, it also has the least range from handset to base (some 5.8 cordless phones also operate on the 2.4 Ghz spectrum)

2.4 Ghz operates on this unlicenced spectrum with many other consumer wireless devices such as WiFi routers, microwave ovens, wireless video cameras, etc...

900 Mhz phones operate on a crowded unlicensed frequency with many other consumer wireless devices, such as baby monitors, wireless speakers, garage door openers, car alarms, etc... also unless the phone has DSS then it is insecure and can be monitored by a radio scanner... (DECT, 2.4 and 5.8Ghz phones all have some form of DSS, or FHSS)

DSS - Digital Spread Spectrum - a form of encryption to prevent eavesdropping...

FHSS - Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum - a form of encryption that also continuously searches for the best channel, and keeps changing to the best channel between the handset and base (normally these phones will not have a channel button, because the phone is constantly changing channels on its own)

Q. I am planning on getting the angelcare baby monitor it has the censor if breathing is not detected in 20 seconds there is an alarm, just wondering if anybody has used this one before and what did you think vs regular baby monitors. Thanks for your help.

Answer
I was going to buy it but my friend had too many problems with it. She took the baby out of the crib and the alarm didn't go off after 20 seconds. It went off a couple of times with her in the room and the baby breathing normally. Also, she had some major problems with interferance from other baby monitors. Others near to her had the same moniter and she would hear their children crying through the receptor. It's a scary time, but I had just a regualr monitor and my child is still alive. They are just trying to get you to pay more out of fear.

Can a baby monitor be used to listen in on a conversation?

wireless or wired? i'm confused! ok-right now, i have wireless internet,

is in my living room, and my pc is in my room, hooked up to my hdtv.
how, ever-i'm tired of paying comcast the extra $7 dollars a month!
so, i'm thinking about buying the "Motorola SB6141 DOCSIS modem".

i want to have a WIRED internet connection, and be able to share
that "wired connection" to my old '2006' pc, apple tv, wireless printer,
and an iphone 5. BTW..the pc will be DEAD soon, until, i can afford
another one! so, i'll only have the apple tv, printer and iphone, to connect.

do i need a wireless or wired modem, or wireless/wired router?
i appreciate your help. thanks.

Answer
Here is how it works,

A router connects two separate networks and manage the traffic between them.

A wireless router enables you to provide wireless (WiFi) Internet access to all of your WiFi enabled devices such as laptops, game consoles, cell phones and tablets, Streaming devices such as Roku boxes and Internet enabled TV and sound devices, etc.

In most home network applications the router connects your local group of computers and devices known as the LAN with the Internet, commonly called the WAN or Wide Area Network.

Two types of Internet devices are commonly sold.

1. Combination modem / routers, often called gateways.

2. Stand alone routers which can be connected to a stand alone modem.

DSL and Cable modems use different technology, for this reason you can't use a cable gateway (DOCSIS) with DSL or use a DSL gateway (ADSL2+) with a cable Internet connection.

A highly rated DOCSIS 3.0 cable gateway is the Motorola SBG6580. It is currently about $120 at Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0040IUI46/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=excharge-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0040IUI46

You could also buy a standalone cable modem and connect it to a separate wireless router.

If you buy an older DOCSIS 2.0 model and you are paying for a speed tier over 20 Mbps. then you will probably not see the throughput that you should.

Be sure to get a newer compatible DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem such as the Motorola SB6120. It supports bonded channels and will increase your cable Internet performance.

As far as routers go,

A fast wireless router does not make your Internet faster.

Your WAN speed is determined by your ISP and is measured in Mbps (Millions of bits per second).

For example if you pay for a 10 Mbps Internet connection, you will get 10 Mbps.

No router or modem will change your 10 Mbps Internet speed.

This Internet connection bandwidth is shared by your entire LAN via your router.

If you have a 10 Mbps plan and one user is utilizing 5 Mbps of the bandwidth to stream a HD Netflix movie that only leaves 5 Mbps for all of the rest of the users on the LAN.

Fast routers and network devices are designed to stream large files on your LAN quickly. The high speed routers permit fast transfer of files between devices connected to your LAN, however WAN speed is still limited by your ISP.

WIRELESS RANGE:

Wireless signals are affected by many factors including distance, wall density, electrical interference, directional antenna range, etc. All of these factors will affect your actual wireless range.

Many wireless connections also experience interference from microwave ovens and cordless phones which interfere with the 2.4 GHz band.

Dual band routers have multiple wireless radios enabling broadcast on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands simultaneously.

Using the 5 GHz band cuts down on interference from cordless phones and microwave ovens..

Not all devices can use the 5 GHz frequency. Many laptops and other devices only operate at 2.4 GHz. Thus the need for dual band routers.

Just because a particular wireless router works good at one location does not guarantee that it will have similar performance in a different location due to variance in the factors listed above.

You should try to centrally locate your wireless router or gateway up high and away from dense walls and electrical and 2.4 GHz wireless interference such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, baby monitors, etc.

Wireless routers are fairly inexpensive. http://www.amazon.com/s/?_encoding=UTF8&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957&field-keywords=wireless%20router&url=search-alias%3Daps&sprefix=wireless%20ro%2Caps%2C490&tag=excharge-20

You don't have to buy your modem, router or gateway from your ISP, you can get one from a local retailer such as BestBuy or Fry's or online from places like Amazon.

As far as the brand goes, the brand is not as important as the model. Some manufacturers release a good model but the next is crap. I would look at the Amazon reviews of models that interest you. Even if you don't buy from Amazon the reviews will tell you a lot about which models to avoid. Look for at least 20 or more reviews with at least a 4 star rating. Read a few and see if they sound like the particular model will work for your application.

Most cable Internet providers use the cable modem's MAC address to activate the modem.

Every device that has a network interface has a unique MAC (Media Access Control) address. This is usually expressed in hexadecimal such as 10:25:A4:59:EF:1C

You'll have to call your cable provider with the MAC of the new modem so they can activate it on your account. The MAC address is usually printed on a sticker attached to the modem.

Good Luck...

Most of them join Al Qaeda voluntarily, not by force. Mainly motivated by their religion and politics.

Answer
I think a major first step would be if the President quit surrendering to them. "We will leave by the end of the year!" ("Yea!!!" Say his toadies.) And "Yea!!" say our enemies. Then they turn to the farmer and say, "See? America is leaving in a few months. They'll be gone. They won't be there to protect you. We won. And you will pay."

If all he had done...and it is SO simple, but Democrats NEVER get it!...is don't SAY you're going to give up. During the Vietnam war, the NVA were constantly monitoring our radio and were constantly hearted by America's flagging resolve under Johnson. They knew that all they had to do was hold on and America would quit. And we did. Like Vietnam, Obama has lost this war. He lost it when he gave up.

UPDATE: Their motivation. Personally, I think religion has very little to do with it. I believe the key motivator is power. These guys aren't fighting to spread their religion, they're fighting to gain control. They USE religion as a facade to justify their tyranny. Think of the prince bishops in medival Europe. Power hungry with almost no regard for 'religion'. Religion was a means to an end. I was in Wurzburg, Germany in January. Toured the Prince Bishop's palace. Now this was THE guy, the big Kahuna in the Catholic church in the region and there was not a single...not one...representation of Christ in the entire palace. Lots of Greek gods, swords, spears and nekkid nymphs, but not a single representation of Christ and only one depiction of any Christian theme, Moses as a baby. The objective here was power and to project power, not religion. Al Qaeda is much the same way.

What do you see the world being like in 2030?

I am worried that we are going to be too controlled & monitored. Having little freedom or rights left. Like computer chips being placed directly in babies as they are born. Is there a way for us to all join together to stop something like this from happening? Maybe a place to hide? I am thinking New Zealand or a tiny island off the southern coast of Spain.. What do you think things will be like in the future?

Answer
2010s - The Rise of the Second Russian empire. A new cold war will be fought between America and an autocratic Russia attempting to build another empire. Poland will become a major ally of the United States in this cold war. The Islamic jihadists will slowly be pushed underground as slowly a more conservative Turkey will impose it's dominance over the Islamic world. China will reach the peak of its financial strength towards the end of this decade or the start of the next one. India will rise at a slower rate than China, but the stability of its government will continue the economic expansion longer. In the United States and Europe privacy rights will be expanded as people become more and more concerned.

2020s -- America and its ally Poland will emerge as the winners in the second cold war against Russia. Turkey will be the de fato leader of the Islamic world and will start to crash with American interests more. China will collapse as the world's new super economic power. Declining birth rates caused by the one child policy will cause China to have way too many old people to support. The mass amounts of corruption and bad loans to internal parties will prove the Chinese system is not superior to the Western World. There will be massive internal China political fights between the wealthy coasts and the poor internal Chinese. China will act in one of two ways to solve this problem: Seal China off from the world or fragment along geopolitical areas. Most likely China of the 2020s will look at a political level a lot like China of the 1920s. India will emerge as the expected economy to over take America. Japan, as the second largest economy in the world, will try to again assume de fato political power over areas of China, but this time by money, not guns. The first solar energy collectors will be placed in orbit and will start to beam their power back to Earth by microwaves. This will start to spell the doom for nations those primary export is oil.

2030 -- Computers will be monitoring us 24/7, but with the primary purpose of watching our health. A computer will notify emergency units of someone having a heart attack before it actually happens. Privacy laws will be very tough; however, it will be easy to monitor anyone. America will be starting another long economic expansion as the World's most powerful economy. Americans will start to worry about the number of Indian imports.

Which Baby Monitor is Best?

Bard

Hi friends,
I think it's an important thing to buy a baby items, but I have no idea which is best?
What would you suggest?

Answer
We use the Tomy Walkabout Premier Advance, it cost around £60 2 years ago and has always worked well. You can see the temperature in babys room, it also has a night light on the monitor in babys room and you can use the parent monitor to speak to your baby in their room, but I have never really used that feature. It also has about 5 or 6 different channels so if you get interference on one channel you can change it to a different one. You can get a good one for around £20 but I would recommend one with a temperature on it, it makes me feel a bit better knowing if I need to warm the room up a bit or cool it down. I would buy another Tomy one if I needed to.

By the way Obama voted for this 4 times and is in favor of it.

Answer
If the baby comes out alive, it should immediately be taken and put up for adoption. If a baby comes out breathing and/or screaming, it is flat-out murder to end its life. I'm sorry. There really is no arguing that point no matter what side of the fence you are on the topic. Now how to ensure compliance? Well, you would think a medical doctor would already have the ethics to do this, but I guess not. I suppose a mandatory videotaping of all abortions or a live, real-time monitoring of them, and the criminal charging of doctors who kill live babies.

Answer
On February 1st, 2012, I was home for work not feeling well. My fiance left for work at 7am. At 10am, I got a call from his sister. He had been in a head on car crash and was air lifted to a hospital an hour and a half away from where I lived. The hospital had gone through his phone to find someone to call, and had first tried "mom" and "dad", but they were on a cruise in the Bahamas and didn't answer. Next they called "grandma" who gave them his sister's number, and she finally he called me. The accident had occurred just 5 miles from our home, and I was only just hearing about it now. I called my mom to give me a ride, as I was crying so much I knew there was no way I could drive. On the way I called the hospital to see if they could give me information. They said they couldn't say anything about his condition, but that I'd better get there fast, and then asked me what religion he was. I was absolutely convinced that he was going to die before I got there. When I finally did get there, he was in a coma with a fractured skull, broken neck, broken pelvis, and lacerated liver. His brain was swelling and they had to put a halo on him and a pressure monitor in his brain. We called our pastor and he came immediately to pray with us. I had never been so scared in my life. They planned a surgery to fuse the broken vertebrae in his neck, but they couldn't do it until his brain stopped swelling, so for now it was just sit and wait. I ended up getting a room at the place across the street from the hospital, and spent a week and a half just waiting, not knowing if he would have brain damage or be paralyzed. When the swelling finally went down and he started to wake up they did surgery which was successful. After surgery they finally removed his breathing tube and I got to talk to him. He couldn't move his right arm, but he could move everything else and he had no brain damage. After months of physical therapy, he regained movement in his right arm and got his halo off just in time for our wedding.

June 9th, 2012 we got married. Our pastor married us, the one who was there the night of his accident. It was very emotional, and I had never been so happy.

On September 19, 2012, I found out that I was pregnant with our first child. Since then we have just been going to doctor appointments, slowly putting the nursery together, and anticipating the birth of our baby in May 2013.

I'd say it was one hell of a year.

I want to try for baby over the next year, and I posted a question on what the costs of having a baby are (such as everything that needs to be purchased) and someone suggesting asking a question about what ways there are to save money with having baby (thanks for the suggestion!!!)

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Answer
-get whatever you can secondhand- from garage sales, craigslist, friends, wherever

- limit the stuff you get and choose ways of caring for your baby that take less stuff. For example, my partner and I plan on getting a baby sling and not a stroller. A sling is cheaper and we think it will be better for the baby to be carried by us close to us where he/she can see our faces and the faces of other people (as opposed to seeing knees and feet whenever we go out anywhere.) Other examples- if your baby is sleeping in the same room as you, no need for a baby monitor and if you cosleep, no need for a crib/baby bed. (Common practice in the country where I live and it helps prevent SIDS - Asian countries have lowest SIDS rates in the world and highest cosleeping rates)
There are a lot of choices like this, and different options, so don't give in to the marketing that says you need an expensive crib, stroller, toys, etc. Do the research and figure out what things will work for you. (Different people will have different things they consider necessary- some moms I know swear by their strollers and cribs, it's just not for me and my family.)

How can I get my infant to fall asleep on her own? What age is ideal for starting?

kweenB

I have a five week old baby, and I have been holding her until she falls asleep then putting her down in her crib afterwards. When and how do I get her to fall asleep on her own?

Answer
What are the signs of sleep readiness?
Your baby may show signs of being ready for sleep when you see the following signs:

rubbing eyes
yawning
looking away
fussing
How can you help your baby fall asleep?
Although it is surprising, not all babies know how to put themselves to sleep. When it is time for bed, many parents want to rock or breastfeed a baby to help him/her fall asleep. Establishing a routine like this at bedtime is a good idea. However, be sure that the baby does not fall asleep in your arms. This may become a pattern and the baby may begin to expect to be in your arms in order to fall asleep. When the baby briefly awakens during a sleep cycle, he/she may not be able to go back to sleep on his own.

Most experts recommend allowing a baby to become sleepy in your arms, then placing him/her in the bed while still awake. This way the baby learns how to go to sleep on his own. Playing soft music while your baby is getting sleepy is also a good way to help establish a bedtime routine.

What sleeping positions are best for a newborn?
For many years in the United States, babies have been put to bed on their stomachs. In most other countries, babies sleep on their backs. Research has found a link between sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and babies who sleep on their stomachs (in the prone position).

Experts now agree that putting a baby to sleep on his/her back is the safest position. Side-sleeping may also be used, but this also has a higher risk than back sleeping. Other reports have found soft surfaces, loose bedding, and overheating with too many blankets also increase the risk for SIDS.

Place your baby on his/her back on a firm, tight-fitting mattress in a crib that meets current safety standards.

Remove pillows, quilts, comforters, sheepskins, stuffed toys, and other soft products from the crib.

Consider using a sleeper as an alternative to blankets with no other covering.

If using a blanket, put your baby with his/her feet at the foot of the crib. Tuck a thin blanket around the crib mattress, only as far as the baby's chest.

Make sure your baby's head remains uncovered during sleep.

Do not place your baby on a waterbed, sofa, soft mattress, pillow, or other soft surface to sleep.

According to the task force report, bed sharing or co-sleeping may be hazardous for babies in certain conditions. The report advises the following:

Parents should consider placing the infant's crib near their bed for more convenient breastfeeding and parent contact.

If a mother chooses to have her infant sleep in her bed to breastfeed, care should be taken that the baby sleeps in a non-prone position, soft surfaces or loose covers are avoided, and the bed is moved away from the wall and other furniture to avoid the baby becoming entrapped between them.

Adults other than the parents, children, or other siblings should not share a bed with an infant.

Parents who choose to bed share with their infant should not smoke or use substances such as drugs or alcohol that may impair their ability to awaken.

To prevent overheating, the report recommends that the infant should be lightly clothed for sleep and the room temperature kept comfortable for a lightly clothed adult. Avoid over bundling and check the baby's skin to make sure it is not hot to the touch.

Additional research has found that infants should not be put to sleep on a sofa, alone or with another person, as this practice increases the risk for SIDS.

While babies should sleep on their backs, other positions can be used during the time babies are awake. Babies can be placed on their stomachs while awake to help develop muscles and eyes and to help prevent flattened areas on the back of the head.

I've looked a little bit online and found a monitoring system where you basically hook your whole house into this receiver (phone, doorbell, alarm clock, baby monitor etc) that comes with light functions and a vibrating disk to put under the mattress. The baby monitor is sold separately and can be hooked up either way also. Together, all of this costs about $225-250. Do they have cheaper systems? In the 2 years that my husband and I have been together, we've never really seen the need to get anything like this for the phone and such...and since we have an apartment, we don't have a doorbell anyway.

Reason being - my husband is hearing impaired and we're thinking of having a baby in the next year and a half or so...I just want to be prepared. :) I don't think the little Fisher Price monitors that vibrate would be strong enough to wake him if I was at work...

Any suggestions for baby heart monitors?

preshus316

I'm 13 weeks pregnant and would like to purchase a baby heart monitor to listen to the baby's heart beat. Can I get one now at this stage or wait until my 3rd trimester?

Answer
You can get one at this stage. There's called fetal dopplers. You can get one from ebay for anywhere between $50-1000.00

You'll hear from quite a few people to buy those cheap ones at Kmart and Walmart. Sure, they're cheap. Around $20. But, you won't hear a heartbeat on them. I have twins, can't hear either one of their heartbeats, and I'm 17 weeks. But I can hear them move around, kick the monitor when I'm pressing on the belly, hear my own heartbeat, or all the water that I just drank gurgling around...but no twins' heartbeats. I heard the kids playing outside far better than anything else that thing could pick up. I took it back and bought a real one on ebay.

You'll want a 2.5 Mhz or a 3.0 - I personally would suggest a 3 if you want to start that early. Your baby should have a heartbeat at this time. My doctor heard ours at 10 weeks.

If you don't hear a heartbeat this early, just remember that you're not a doctor. Doctors have more experience finding the heartbeats, and when a baby is that small, it's not that easy.

I bought one, although I am not a doctor, and although I can feel both of my twins move, to settle my fears. Every day I check to make sure that I hear both heart beats. Then I go on about my day.

I'm adding a link to one from ebay. They have a lot of them on there. Just so you can see that it's similar to what the doctors have in their offices.

Answer
Well I'm a young mother of four all under the age of five my youngest is 8 months old. I know what you mean about things costing a lot of money so here is my opion, but in the end its up to you.
Huggies are great but cost way to much
Luvs are way to much and they dont hold well
Pampers they say are great but I have found out that they suck, they dont hold up at all
So, I use White Clouds they are about $15 for a box of 100 or more and this is if you buy them at walmart. Also they hold up very well no leaks no messes and no wet beds or clothes which always makes you happy when u have less laundry to do. Plus they are good for babies who have sensitive skin as well.
Now baby monitors moms alway need these nice to have. I have used the same one with all four of my kids and its still working great. The price is worht it as well specially if you want more kids. You can get it at walmart
Fisher-Price 900 MHz Digital Private Connection Monitor with Dual Receivers
A new design and feature set makes this 900 MHz. Now you can also buy the single and not the dual works just as well.
Now your really dont need a wipe warmer the wipes arent that cold and there really not something needed but if you want one go to walmart and they have two kinds that are not that pricey.
Prince Lionheart Ultimate Wipes Warmer
Keeps wipes warm and moist, non-browning, anti-microbial
or
DEX On the Go Travel Wipes Warmer
Warm wipes for baby, anywhere at anytime. The 1st one is 19 or so dollars and the 2nd is 16 dollars
I hope this helped you out and congrats

can you buy replacement parts for a sony babycall baby moniotr?

sony babycall baby monitor

Answer
You'd have to work through Sony's customer care site, which is here:

http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/SYCustomerCare?storeId=10151&catalogId=10551&langId=-1

Be warned, it may not be worth getting replacement parts. You may simply want to replace the unit. Note this experience:

I purchased this monitor when I was pregnant with my first child because it was from Sony. I was happy with it the first few months and then the reception started to wane. After a year or so (ironically just after the warranty expired) our reception got awful and we decided to replace it. After we bought the second I made sure to fill out the warranty info and sure enough, a few weeks later I needed a replacement cord (vacuum accident). When I called Sony I was told it was not under the warranty (Ok- it was my fault anyway) and that to replace this tiny cord would cost me $22.95 PLUS $6.95 shipping PLUS tax. I was livid and tried to replace the cord at Radio Shack and surprise you can't do it because it is not a standard cord. The monitor only cost $30 and I could have bought a new one for what they wanted to charge. I think Sony could make a better product and they should not price-gouge consumers that way. I since bought a Safety 1st dual receiver monitor that has even better reception than the Sony (I can hear her breathing clear as a bell which I never could with the Sony) and having two receivers saves me from having to move it every day from the upstairs to down. Also it gives me a back-up in case of another vacuum incident. Bottom line is the BabyCall is a disappointing product from Sony that should perform better, and the customer service is a joke.

I hope this helps!!

I don't really want to end up buying 18 cages throughout the course of his life.
& when he's fully matured is it okay to have him out wandering in my room?

Answer
You can start with a 40-50 gallon. But, they grow 2ft within the first year, and will need a 4x8x4 viv. Allowing a monitor to roam your house presents some problems. They have sharp claws and are very destructive. They can also carry salmonella in their skin. Monitors are not cats or dogs they don't like to be handled. They are deep burrowers and require 18-24 inches of substrate. This is especially true of females the need to dig so they can lay eggs. If they don't have a suitable nesting site they may retain the eggs and die. Read this website, it is one of the most complete guides to savannahs I have found. http://savannahmonitor.org/

Anyone have labor induced because of the size of the baby?

BabyGlennI

The doctor says it is possible that my baby is too big and he would consider inducing me. I am 38 weeks pregnant and I have an ultrasound tomorrow to check on his size. I do not have any medical conditions, he just has always measured further along. My question is, has anyone ever had an induction due to the size of the baby? And if so, how big was the baby? Thanks in advance!

Answer
Don't let anyone who hasn't experienced an induction scare you. I've had two successful inductions and I have two happy, healthy, intelligent little girls who are advanced for their age. Induction doesn't mean that harm will come to you or baby, the technology for monitoring the contractions is really sophisticated and baby's heart rate will also be continuously monitored as well. There is relatively little risk of fatality if the induction is performed for a good reason and under the supervision of an experienced OB/GYN. Sometimes induction saves the mother's life as in my case. I was diagnosed with preeclampsia with an extremely high spike in blood pressure, and protein in my urine. I could have had a heart attack or stroke from this pregnancy induced disease. Delivering baby in a timely way saved both our lives as this is the only cure for this life-threatening condition.

In my family the women tend to give birth to large babies (ie. 10-11 lbs) and we have relatively small frames. There are several of my siblings and cousins who had birth injuries because of their large size and drawn out complicated births. It is better to induce early if the Dr. thinks that there is a chance for macrosomia (big baby). In this case a child can be born with a brain bleed, like my sister did and she is mentally retarded and partially deaf. It was a birth injury. My cousin has learning disabilities as he was also birth injured. His long labor resulted in a forceps delivery and a broken collar bone in addition to head injuries because the babies in our family are heavy AND have big heads. Let your Dr's expertise be your guide. Better not to gamble with going to term if it looks like your baby is over 9 lbs. Some may disagree with me but I know two family members who were carried to term and wound up being 10 lb.+ babies and the mothers suffered long painful deliveries, episiotomies or 4th degree tears and had babies who grew up with major disabilities. I know from personal experience. Don't gamble with your baby's life. If the Dr. says "induce" then listen. It could make the difference in having a healthy child. They advise this for a reason.

I also have been diagnosed with a large baby and we may induce early. I'll be monitored with ultrasounds until my delivery to check for cephalopelvic disporportion and a large baby. If it goes over 9 lbs, I'm scheduling a C-section. Its worth the extra pain not to have a mentally handicapped child.
