I need a camera to mount on a remote control car. It needs to be light weight, with a light source, battery powered and wireless. Baby monitoring cameras appears to be ideal except I haven't been able to locate one that has a light source for picture or video in a darken room.

If you have any idea where I can find such a camera it would greatly appreciated,

Answer
most cameras are pretty light weight these days but as far as something that has it's own permanent light? I don't know of any. Maybe you could try this light as it's only 4oz. and a camera to go with it. Hope this helps in some way.

Has anyone used a video baby monitor?

Pregnant w

How do they work?
What are the pros and cons?
I am thinking about buying one that you can have two monitors and see two rooms at once and was wondering how many people prefer it.

Answer
Congrats on baby #2!

I couldn't live with out my video monitor!! I have the Summer Infant Day & Night Handheld Color Video Monitor. The picture is so clear both at night and during the day. I love being able to check on my baby with out waking her. I don't even have to get out of bed unless she really needs me! I think if I only had the audio, I would have been getting up a lot more often to investigate every sound, especially during the first few months. The handheld part has a button on top so you can turn off the video screen if the light bothers you at night. Then if you hear something you feel you need to check on, simply click the button and the video comes back on. I read the reviews for this product. Many people say they could not get a signal. I never had a problem. I also read that they can interfere with wi-fi. My husband is a web developer... he never would have allowed wi-fi interference!

I highly recommend this monitor to all my friends. The only con I can think of is that I have had to change the channel due to static. Seriously, it's a flick of a button and I've had to do it maybe 3 times in 7 months. No biggie! I know you can get an extra camera for this monitor, but I don't need one yet. Here is what one person commented: "We bought a second camera to go with the monitor we already had. I love being able to switch back and forth between my two kids' rooms. Only issue is if the monitor is too close to one camera, you can have interference when trying to check on the other one."

Hope this helps.

Im going to be a first time mom & my baby's nursery is on a different floor in my house. Im looking for the best portable baby monitor, possibly a picture one. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Answer
I would go for a basic sound only monitor. When I was setting up my nursery we bought a motion and sound monitor. I found it to be useless for a new born as the baby was too small to set it off. It needed an adult or something bigger to set it off as it needed big movements (a hand waving in front of it.) I have one by fisher price that came with 2 speakers and the base. It is really good and picks up all sounds (it is so sensitive that it picks up the grand father clock chiming in the dinning room!) I love it. It only cost us about $80 from baby target.

I have looked into digital monitors, but they're a little out of my price range. Does anyone know of any good classic style baby monitors? I am pregnant with my first child.

Answer
I love the Sony sound sensor baby call. It's voice activated so you don't hear the static. You do have the choice of listening to everything though. I bought a second one for my 3 yr olds room since I can't hear her if she calls out. They are only $35.00 at Target, great buy.

What is a baby monitor and how it works?

Amina L

I have an elderly client with this baby monitor. Is it possible to move it just like any other electronic by unplugging it and plugging it in another room? So that if I move from room to room I can still monitor that person. I do not want to mess with it by taking it off without knowing anything about it.
I would like to plug it in another room where I can turn on light and read, not to disturb the client and still hear hear her via the monitor.

Answer
A baby monitor can be 1 way , 2 way, an now they even have one with a camera attached. It usually has a base that you keep with the baby and a hand held you can walk around with. The 2 way allows you to hear the baby and speak back if you want. They work really well and its a great way to keep track of babies and small children while in another room or doing house work.
I have used these many times working in healthcare having elderly patients.

I'm having my first child in December and my mom and I are looking at baby monitors and we found on that had a camera and shows you a live image of the baby. My mom was pretty impressed by this as they weren't around when I was a baby. But they are outrageously priced! I think she wants to get one for me anyway, as this is her first grandchild and my mom's the type to spend way too much. So I was wondering does anyone else have these? Worth the price? Are they any good?

Answer
I actually did this, but I used a wireless ip camera. When my son was 9 months old we had to move from a condo to an apartment with no washer/dryer hookup. So I had to leave the apartment to do the laundry a couple doors down and needed a way to see what my son was up to in between loads. I agree that the video monitor setups are very steep. And something worth noting is that every single one I've seen on shelves is not a secured network. So that video signal is open for others to view nearby. I use(d) a dlink IP cam that is networked securely to my home wireless network and accessible via smartphone. It cost about 30 bucks and 15 minutes of setup and I was up and going. I've had this setup for almost 3 years now and it's been helpful. I don't think I've had any memorable absences, but it's a nice piece of mind to make sure my son was sleeping safely when I had to leave the apartment for a moment.

Is a wireless modem/gateway realy "wire"- less?

Tommy Slic

Hi, my parents are always pressuring me to help them buy a "wireless" modem/gateway for our DSL service, because they don't like cables connecting everywhere, but I am a little confused on this, because we already have "wireless internet gateway" that acts as a modem/router combination and it supports wifi connections...

So my question is, is it actually possible to have a literally "wireless" gateway that don't require any cables to plug in to it...? Or did my parents get the definition wrong and "wireless" really means wifi connections?
I mean is it actually possible for a "wireless" gateway to not require any cables at all? Even no power adapter required?

Answer
There are completely wireless devices that can provide broadband Internet to multiple devices via WiFi.

You may be able to get a WiFi device from your mobile broadband provider such as the MiFi. The MiFi device connects to the Internet via a cellular data plan and provides wireless routing functionality.

The MiFi is a very small, portable, self-contained device that uses a rechargeable battery.

A MiFi is convenient. I used one in the past for work and travel.

When wireless mobile hotspots on smartphones became commonplace, I cancelled my MiFi and started using a wireless hotspot app on my smartphone.

Same functionality at a lower cost, the add-on data plan is much cheaper than paying for two devices. I just turn it on on the phone and can connect up to 8 wireless devices.

You have to pay for a mobile data plan from your cellular provider.

Be forewarned that most have low monthly data limits and buying more is expensive, so you wouldn't want to use it to stream a lot of Netflix movies or try and replace your home DSL or cable Internet service.

I have a 6 GB shared family data plan and find that more than adequate, you'll have to monitor your mobile usage for a few months and upgrade or downgrade your data plan to match your usage. Verizon emails me an alert when I have used 50% of the data allowance. I usually receive this late in the billing cycle so I have never exceeded the data limits.

That being said,

For home use you are much better off with a DSL, cable, or fiber optic Internet service. Most of these types of providers have much larger monthly data limits of 150 GB or more. Here is a blog post on current ISP data caps: http://isp1.us/blog/current-data-caps-for-us-isp-providers/

You can either use a wireless router (which has much better WiFi range than a portable device such as a MiFi) or a gateway such as you use.

Another point,

WiFi connections are convenient, especially for portable devices such as tablets, laptops, etc., however convenience comes at a price.

Unless you specifically need a wireless connection, I would not generally recommend it especially for a fixed device such as a desktop PC or for a device used for serious online gaming or video streaming.

Wireless signals are affected by many factors including distance, wall density, electrical interference, directional antenna range, etc.

All of these factors will affect your actual wireless range. As wireless connection quality varies the connection speeds are renegotiated. The connection may start at 150 Mbps and end up at less than 20 Mbps or drop entirely.

You should try to centrally locate your wireless router or gateway up high and away from dense walls and electrical and 2.4 GHz wireless interference such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, baby monitors, etc.

For good consistent speed, your best bet is a direct Ethernet connection. Ethernet is unaffected by wireless interference and will give you a rock solid, stable network connection.

Remember, for Ethernet or WiFi connections, this is only the local network (LAN) speed. Internet (WAN) speed is determined by your ISP. For example a 3 Mbps Internet connection can only provide 3 Mbps even if connected to a Gigabit Ethernet network. No router or connection will make your Internet faster than 3 Mbps.

The only way to Improve your Internet speed is to upgrade your plan or switch to a faster ISP.

Good Luck...

I can not get signal from my router in the back room but can about 20 meters/65 feet up the house so would i be able to run a 20 meter/65 feet usb cable with a network adapter attached to it and get signal that way. I am aware that high speed usb connections are limited to 5 meters/16 feet but i dont know if a network adapter is included in those limitations. If it could even give me half strength i would be happy at that or if you have any other solutions please feel free to voice them.....Thanks in advance

Answer
USB won't go that far.

Wireless signals are affected by many factors including wall density, electrical interference, directional antenna range, etc.

All of these factors will affect your actual wireless range. As wireless connection quality varies the connection speeds are renegotiated. The connection may start at 54 Mbps and end up at less than 20 Mbps.

Just because a particular wireless router works good at one location does not guarantee that it will have similar performance in a different location due to variance in the factors listed above.

You should try to centrally locate your wireless router or gateway up high and away from dense walls and electrical and 2.4 GHz wireless interference such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, baby monitors, etc.

There are solutions,

The best solution is to run a Ethernet cable to your router. Pre-assembled CAT5 Ethernet cables are relatively inexpensive. Ethernet can be run up to a maximum of 100 meters.

A good quality 50' CAT5e is about $9.50 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001W26TIW/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B001W26TIW&linkCode=as2&tag=excharge-20

If it is not feasible to run cables you have other options such as powerline network adapters You plug one in by the router and one in the room where you need access and connect them to the devices with standard Ethernet patch cables. http://isp1.us/reviews/netgear-xavb2101-powerline-adapter/

The network signals are transmitted over your existing home electrical wiring which will not be affected by wireless interference.

However, if you need the wireless mobility there are various other ways to extend a Internet connection to areas with a weak wireless signal.

Devices such as wireless extenders that can expand your wireless range if need be. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004YAYM06/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=excharge-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B004YAYM06

The wireless range extender receives weak wireless signals and repeats them to extend the signal range to greater distances. Some models include 4 Ethernet ports in addition to the wireless radio.

Good Luck...

How do you connect a sensor to a radio transmitter and programming it to transmit one task only?

Q. I badly need advice on how to do this for our science project. Our project is to monitor garbage through radio waves and sensors... the problem is that how do we connect the sensor to the transmitter and how do we get to program it to transmit the garbage levels... and one more thing... What Type of sensor do we use?

Answer
Sounds like a cool project that's best if broken down by section.

The key to a successful science project is to keep it as simple as possible while demonstrating one or more concepts. Cost will also be a concern. The trickiest part will be your radio link since there are all kinds of government regulations about what you can and cannot do especially at the unlicensed level. Instead you want to find a transmitter and receiver that already work well together over short distances. Garage door or car alarm remotes can be difficult to work with on the receiver end. A pair of cell phones might work if you have unlimited minutes to burn. Low power toy walkie talkies might work if you had a way to push the transmit button for short intervals. An iPod type transmitter and FM radio might work together. So would a couple of WiFi enabled laptops networked together through a wireless router, but now we're getting complicated again. A battery powered wireless baby monitor just might be the ideal solution.

Note that most of the transmit/receive link possibilities mentioned above involve audio. You'll want to use your garbage level to control either the frequency or volume of the audio you transmit. Volume is probably the easiest since you can use a relatively simple meter circuit at the receiving end to measure it.

One of the nice things about a science project is you can control many of the parameters. Use a small waste basket as your garbage can and use something that packs relatively uniformly like tennis balls or crushed aluminum cans as your garbage. Now all you need to do is weigh them to know how full the can is.

Place your garbage can on a plywood platform hinged at one edge and held up by springs. Get one of those slide style volume controls and rig it so that the slide moves as the platform edge moves under the weight of the garbage. Adjust the tension and number of springs as needed.

You'll need an audio source such as a simple oscillator or a steady tone saved on an MP3 player. This feeds the volume control on you platform scale which in turn feeds your garbage monitor transmitter (in place of the microphone).

The volume at the receiver (after substituting a meter for the speaker) will track the weight of the garbage. Lookup LM3914 for circuits that use LED's that you can label from empty to full.

I'm assuming that someone in your group can handle the basic electronic connections.

Now go get that A.

How do you use Clearblue Fertility Monitor? Is it worth it?

So I've been researching Clearblue Fertility Monitor, and am considering buying it. Has anyone had success with it? How exactly do you use it? Do you have to pee on a stick every day, or only certain days? Was anyone able to conceive with the help of it? I have heard OPK tests can sometimes be unreliable, or difficult to determine if they're positive or not. I have heard that the monitor gives a clear answer to when your fertile days are.
Thanks, and good luck to all TTC!

Answer
Hi! I have used Clear Blue Fertility Monitor and had success within the second month. I actually got my BFP two days ago at 8dpo!! The monitor is very picky and you must follow all the instructions carefully, but it is well worth the money!! I still can't believe I got pregnant using it! I told myself that if I got pregnant, I would answer some yahoo questions about the monitor to help others see the value and give them hope.

Sorry this is long:) but here's how it works:

You must buy a pack of ClearBlue easy Fertility sticks made for the monitor. No other sticks works with the monitor, and unless you buy a package that includes the sticks and the monitor (amazon sells them together) you must buy the sticks separately. They usually come in a three month supply assuming that each month the monitor only asks your for 10 sticks. However, if your cycle is long and you don't ovulate until later, the monitor will ask you for 20 sticks a cycle. When you buy the monitor you will set a little "m" button on the side, which means menses. You must start it within cycle day 5 of your cycle. Meaning if you buy the monitor and you are on cycle day three, you can still set the monitor, but you will have to wait for the next cycle if you are past cycle day 5.

Also, you must set it within a time frame that is reasonable for you to take pee samples everyday. When you set your monitor using the "m" button, you only have a three hour window each way to dip your stick in pee and let your monitor interpret the stick when it starts asking you for samples (usually on cycle day 6). For example, if you set the m button at 6 am in the morning on cycle day 4, cycle day 6 the monitor will flash the stick sign when you turn it on from 3am until 9am. This is the only time the monitor can read the sticks.

You can either pee in a cup or dip the stick a urine stream. I find that dipping it in a cup is much much more accurate, because again, the monitor is very sensitive about how long the stick is dipped in the pee. If you use a cup, you can only dip the test stick in it for 15 seconds.

When you are done dipping the stick, you turn the monitor on and it will flash a pee stick symbol to you. You will then put the stick in the monitor and it will flash for 5 minutes. When you take it out, it will give you a reading via bars on the screen. You will be either low fertility (one bar), high fertility (two bars), or peak fertility (three bars with an egg symbol). The days of high fertility vary between cycles and people.
The monitor does get to know your body for the first three months, so give it time, and don't get discouraged. Not everyone gets pregnant right away with the monitor because ttc is very sensitive even with perfect timing.

The first cycle I used it, I got high fertility from days 15-18. I peaked on day 19 and 20 and it followed with another high day. I did not get pregnant that cycle.

The next month I used the monitor, it showed only ONE day of high fertility and I peaked on day 17 and 18. I did get pregnant that cycle.

Each cycle, my monitor asked for 20 sticks because I have very long cycles. The hardest part some people say is remembering to put the test stick within the time window. For me, it was A LOT of fun. I would wake up every day and remember because I wanted to know what my "fertility status" was.

Most of all, it gives you peace of mind. I must say, I was disappointed I did not get pregnant in the first month, but knew that without the monitor it would have taken much longer. We tried for 5 months prior to using the monitor and I already have a baby so was disappointed when it didn't happen quickly.

The only thing that I can say is not to get your hopes up, and give the monitor a shot. There are hundreds of reviews on amazon and other websites and I would frequently read them to get hope and encouragement.

I hope this helps and I hope you get your baby:)

Oh, I also used preseed which I think was very helpful in me getting pregnant. Its a sperm friendly lubricant! If you try the monitor for 3 months and no luck, try using preseed, it helps with your cervical mucous needed to have a baby.

How can I stop my cordless phone from interfering with my wireless router?

I dont kno

I have 2.4 ghz spread spectrum cordless phone that autoselects the clearest channel everytime you use the phone and there is no way to change the channel manually. I also have a linksys 2.4 ghz wireless router. Using the cordless phone renders my wifi useless 9 times out of 10. I have tried to change the routers wireless channel (possible values are 1-11 I think) but that did not solve the problem. Does anyone know what I can do to prevent this interference?

Answer
Each device uses the same frequency band (as do garage door openers, baby monitors, Web cams, ....).

You can change frequency bands for one or the other. Use a 5Mhz phone, or a 5MHz band WiFi gear (802.11a).

Reduce the relative signal strength seen by the 802.11b/g stuff you've got. Move the phone to the other end of the house. Move the laptop (or whatever) closer, leaving the phone in the same place, ... Add an antenna (probably a corner reflector (chicken wire may be a perfectly sensible material) for the rubber ducky type of antenna design most commonly seen) to both ends of the WiFi link (you may not have to physically crack open the radios at either end, but note that this dodge increases signal strenght in one direction (and does the same to receiver sensitivity). Since both the phone handset(s) and the mobile WiFi device (a laptop, probably) is also mobile, this isn't any kind of universally adequate dodge. Find a way to reduce the phone's signal strength (probably not possible to non-techie types) unless it's possible to say, put soeme absorbing or reflecting material between the phone and the WIFi radios. An experimental bronze foil covered wall, perhaps. Ought to work well if you can keep the two radio types out of each other's effective range. May not be possible in some kinds of interior decorating environments. consult with those in charge before trying anything like this.

Another dodge ito try to arrange that the WiFi antennas are a 90 degree polarizatino difference than the phone antennas (as usually used; if you have sprawling teenagers, this may not be predictable).
Since both devices operate (or probably do) in a spread spectrum mode, each will appear to the other to be a general increase in the noise level against which they must work. Changing channels (if possible) isn't likely to be very effective. Too much noise, no radio receiver will be able to make sense of what it hears.

How do I get rid of these spirits?

Over the past 5-7 months, MANY spirits have been haunting my little sister. Bit marks appear on her in the morning, she doesn't like to go in her room, and often talks to a 'wall' as if someone is there. Recently, we inserted a baby monitor to see what happened. I can look in the monitor and see faces and body's in the crib. How can I get rid of these spirits? HELP! (There is also an adult.)
Also, there are orbs flying everywhere, faces and body's appear on the carpet [They CHANGE facial expressions.], walls, and even look at you.

Answer
This is no joke an evil spirit is harming your sister. You need a Priest who is strong in faith for this. To deliver her, protect her and cleanse her. DO NOT try and get rid of it (them) by yourself, they are intelligent beings and do not have any kind of morals. You also need a house cleansing and a house blessing but get a Priest first to get rid of the demon and its friends, he will also guide you with the cleansing and blessing. All you said above is classic demon activity. Call this Warrior Priest who is also a demonologist RIGHT NOW.

How much does a baby Red Eared Slider Turtle eat?

Desiree

My son was given a baby turtle 2 weeks ago by a friend, i have never had to take care of a turtle before. I have only seen Donatello eat 3 times since we got him. He runs around and swims all day so he is not acting like he is depressed or sick. Just wondering how often he is suppose to eat.

Answer
Red eared sliders are very common turtles and do make great pets!

Your turtle will always be begging for food. Red-Eared sliders have a voracious appetite. This will depend a bit on your individual turtle. A good rule of thumb is to feed as much as your turtle will consume in 15 minutes. If you feed in a separate container, it is easier to monitor how much and how fast your turtle eats. It is important to offer a variety of foods at the same time -- don't just give your turtle its favorite items.

As an alternative guideline, another common "rule of thumb" is to give meals that are roughly the same size (in total volume) as the turtle's head and neck. Still, you'll need to monitor your turtle's body condition and adjust if necessary.

Keep in mind, that if you are feeding strictly by these rules, feeding every day might be too much, and every two or three days might be too little. You will likely need to adjust the amount you give your turtle. The best guide is to monitor your turtle's weight and condition, and with a little experience you will get to know better how much your turtle can eat and stay in good condition. You also do not want to let juvenile turtles grow too quickly. If a growing turtle gets too fat or grows too quickly it can cause bone and joint problems

To ensure proper nutrition, strong growth and a healthy long-lived turtle, feed a varied diet to both adults and juveniles. Just remember that adults eat less animal protein and more vegetable matter. Juveniles must be fed every day; adults can be fed once every two to three days. Do not feed more than they can eat; the excess food will go to waste and foul the water. Feed a combination of the following foods:

Commercial diets (No more than 25% of total diet)
Trout Chow, commercial floating fish, reptile or turtle food (pellets, sticks or tablets). The pellets and sticks have the advantage of being formulated specifically for reptiles and don't decompose in the water as fast as other foods.

Animal Protein (No more than 25% of total diet)
Live feeder fish--do not feed defrosted frozen fish; they are deficient in thiamin and excess consumption will cause a thiamin deficiency in your turtle. Earthworms--buy them from a reptile or aquarium store; do not feed the ones from your yard as they may contain bacteria, parasites and pesticides against which your turtle has no immunity. Finely chopped raw lean beef, beef heart and cooked chicken are okay for treats, but are not appropriate as a major part of a balanced diet for whole prey eaters. High quality dog kibble can be offered occasionally as treats, too; like muscle meat, dog and cat foods are not appropriate when used as a significant portion of a turtle's diet.

Plant Matter (50% or more of total diet)
Offer leaves of dark leafy greens such as collard, mustard and dandelion greens. Offer shredded carrots (and carrot tops), squash and green beans. Fruit can be offered raw; shred hard fruits like apples and melons, chopping soft fruits such as berries. To help keep their beak in trim, let them gnaw on pieces of cantaloupe with the (well washed) rind still attached.

Vitamin Supplements should be added twice a week. Use a good reptile or turtle multivitamin. Turtles must also be supplied with additional calcium; they often enjoy taking bites out of calcium blocks and gnawing on cuttlebone, so always have some available to them.

Why is my wireless adapter limiting my download speed?

best baby monitor consumer reports
on Best Baby Monitors Consumer Reports - The Goods on Baby Monitors ...
best baby monitor consumer reports image

Aaron Cost

When my router is plugged VIA Ethernet, I can get download speeds of 62,000 kbps (7.2Mb/s) and this result was supplied by multiple online download speed testers, and is true.

However, because I'm being forced into using a wireless adapter (Realtek RTL8187B 802.11g 54Mbps) and then my download speed is 6000 kbps, my connectivity to it is Excellent and it reports good signal strength... The 54Mbps cap is enough for 62,000 kbps.

I'm so annoyed, frustrated and confused.

Should I buy a new wireless adapter that is not a USB one? Is there a setting I need to change...?

Answer
Well, 802.11g is half duplex, meaning only one device can communicate at a time. Because of this (and a few other factors) 802.11g is only usually less than 50% efficient. So if your data rate is 54 Mbps, then you can expect an actual through of around 27 Mbps (or less). That would be 3 MBps. You also have to factor in the number of connected devices. Also 54 Mbps is only ~55,000 Kbps so you wouldn't get your 62k with it anyways..

WiFi is a shared medium, so if anything else is connected, that will decrease the available bandwidth to the device. Devices operating on the same channel will create interference which will also decrease performance. Microwaves, baby monitors, and other WiFi networks on the same channel will cause interference. Try to stay away from non-WiFi devices you are try to use the network and they are operational. Also, if their are other wireless networks near you, make sure you are operating on a different, non-overlapping channel.

Also, take into account the quality of the router. Some consumer grade devices aren't very at forwarding packets, so even though they report they support a certain data rate doesn't mean they will forward data at full line rate. Only way to test this is to try connecting to someone else's WiFi with a similar Internet bandwidth but a different router. If you get better performance there, its possible your router sucks.

Should GMO foods be banned until proven safe?

DaveW79

NaturalNews) A report published in the International Journal of Microbiology has verified once again that Monsanto's genetically modified (GM) crops are causing severe health problems. A legal challenge issued against Monsanto forced the multi-national agriculture giant to release raw data revealing that animals fed its patented GM corn suffered liver and kidney damage within just three months.

http://www.naturalnews.com/z028388_GM_crops_kidney_damage.html
Hundreds of sheep have died in India after grazing on cotton plants after the BT Cotton was harvested.

Answer
I've looked into this study and, statistically speaking, it is a textbook case of a Type I error. In science, we call this type of error a 'false positive'. In other words, there was a weak correlation between the liver damage and the consumption of Bt toxins that could have just as easily been attributed to chance. Therefore, it is illogical to jump to conclusions and declare that a causal relationship exists.

There are many, many other tests, on the other hand, that indicate that the toxin is perfectly harmless. Think about this for a second. The Bt toxin is naturally produced by Bacillus thurengiensis. This is a very common bacteria; it is found in most soils and on many plant surfaces. We have been eating this bacteria, along with the Bt toxin that it produces, for thousands of years. Bt corn has had the gene that codes for Bt proteins spliced into it. When these normally harmless proteins are exposed to alkaline conditions they change conformation and latch onto the walls of the intestinal tract, causing cells to lyse and eventually killing the animal. Many herbivorous insects have very alkaline intestinal tracts. Humans and other mammals, on the other hand, have acid to neutral intestinal tracts. In our GI tract, the protein remains in its harmless natural conformation.

I agree that GMO's need to be more heavily monitored, especially the ones that are modified to produce pharmaceuticals. IMO, they should only be grown in isolated hothouses so they cannot cross-pollinate with our field crops. But Bt crops and RoundUp ready crops are both harmless. When we grow Bt crops we don't have to use pesticides, which can be very damaging to the surrounding ecosystem and to the consumer.

When we plant RoundUp ready crops, then we can use RoundUp exclusively. I've studied herbicides extensively in college. Some of them are horrible chemicals, staying in the soil for years. Some of them will burn human skin if they touch it, basically popping our cells like balloons. Others, mostly auxin-based herbicides, can be carried on the wind for miles, burning the new growth of entire forests. Glyphosate (RoundUp) is a very safe herbicide. It isn't dangerous unless you drink large amounts of it (which would be incredibly stupid), breaks down in the soil after about three days, and doesn't leech nearly as easily as many other, more dangerous herbicides. It's only harmful to the environment if it gets into wetlands, where it can injure amphibians. But that can be avoided by using best management practices.

Some GMOs are dangerous. Many are actually helpful: they reduce the use of more dangerous herbicides and pesticides. Please don't throw out the baby with the bathwater.

What are the benefits or side effects from taking Zoloft?

best baby monitor for elderly

best baby monitor for elderly image

hillaryc59

My husband has been depressed and is considering asking a doctor for a prescription for Zoloft.

Now, we've heard both good and not so good things about Zoloft.
I'd appreciate any feedback from anyone out there, including physicians on Zoloft. How long before it starts to take effect or you notice any results. Drug interactions etc.

Thank you!

Answer
Zoloft is an antidepressant and it didn't do much for me.

According to Drugs.com: http://www.drugs.com/zoloft.html
"You may have thoughts about suicide when you first start taking an antidepressant, especially if you are younger than 24 years old. Zoloft is FDA-approved for children with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). It is not approved for treating depression in children. Your doctor will need to check you at regular visits for at least the first 12 weeks of treatment.
Call your doctor at once if you have any new or worsening symptoms such as: mood or behavior changes, anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, or if you feel impulsive, irritable, agitated, hostile, aggressive, restless, hyperactive (mentally or physically), more depressed, or have thoughts about suicide or hurting yourself. SSRI antidepressants may cause serious or life-threatening lung problems in newborn babies whose mothers take the medication during pregnancy. However, you may have a relapse of depression if you stop taking your antidepressant during pregnancy. If you are planning a pregnancy, or if you become pregnant while taking Zoloft, do not stop taking the medication without first talking to your doctor....

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: skin rash or hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:

* seizure (convulsions);
* tremors, shivering, muscle stiffness or twitching;
* problems with balance or coordination; or
* agitation, confusion, sweating, fast heartbeat.

Less serious Zoloft side effects may include:

* drowsiness, dizziness, weakness;
* nausea, diarrhea, dry mouth, or changes in appetite or weight; or
* decreased sex drive, impotence, or difficulty having an orgasm.

This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Tell your doctor about any unusual or bothersome side effect....

Before taking Zoloft, tell your doctor if you are using any of the following medicines:

* tramadol (Ultram, Ultram ER, Ultracet);...

Zoloft is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). It works by restoring the balance of serotonin, a natural substance in the brain, which helps to improve certain mood problems….

Caution is advised when using Zoloft in the ELDERLY; they may be more sensitive to its effects, especially low blood sodium levels."

Serotonin is the neurotransmitter that is most often increased or decreased when trying to treat sleep disorders and Fibromyalgia. It has to be monitored carefully when taking Tramadol because of the increased chance of seizures. There are other drugs that can cause harmful interaction as well as alcohol.

Few antidepressants actually create a high in the person who is taking them, unless they are taken by someone who really doesn’t need it. This is where drug abuse becomes a problem, but if a person is prescribed the medication it is because they need it and that need reduces the chance of addiction as the medical properties are exploited.

Different antidepressants act upon various people in different ways as per their disease, their biology and frankly some unknown factors. We don’t know exactly how these drugs work; we only know what they SEEM to do and how effective they CAN be. The problem is that they can also not work for some people.

How can I stop being jealous of my sister's ideal pregnancy?

Robin

I have that ugly linea negra line. I gained so much more weight than her. She did not have morning sickness or anything. She just complained about her feet feeling swollen and feeling more tired. I have a change in appetite. I vomit. She had an ideal childbirth too. She took the pain relatively well. I am scared I am going to be those hollering pregnant women.

Answer
Yes, sibling jealousy is alive and well. It started way back with Cain and Able.
I came from a family of 7 siblings, now all grown and the older siblings retiring some are highly successful, others.. not so much.

You are probably right... you gained weight, you were sick, she seemed to skip through it all. Her kids will be perfect, her life will blossom, her kids will win the lotto etc..

You are not imagining things, there are people in this world that seem to get all the breaks.. not all the time but it seems like it in our eyes. I just stand there, scratch my head and say, "Really.... you have got to be kidding me...." as I look to the heavens for some explanation.

Well... there really is no explanation other than that's the way it is. However; I experienced something one day that made me stop that kind of thought that I want to share.

My wife needed a quick test done at a hospital so I grabbed the daughter and wife and took a 3 hr drive to a major hospital to do this test which has nothing to do with this story as the test was a no nothing... but as my wife was being tested my daughter and I went to a little tea room up on the 3rd floor. This tea room overlooked a park, had large glass windows to take in the beautiful view as the autumn colors was on the trees and an adjacent lake glowed with the fall color.

As my daughter and I sat there and sipped our tea an elderly couple walked in followed by a hospital gurney type bed with bright white sheets being pushed by an orderly. The bed had all the latest monitoring equipment attached, I.V.s tubes etc and in the bed was a man about my age who was bald, sickly thin, pale white and appeared to be suffering from an advanced disease. I suspected cancer.

His bed was gently pushed up to the window so he could see out as the older couple got some coffee and cookies. The 3 of them sat there, staring out into the beautiful trees. The elderly lady fed whom I guess to be her son a bite of cookie, he weakly smiled. Small talk ensued among them but mostly they just sat next to his bed, staring outside, spending what I can only asses to be precious remaining moments.

As I sat with my little daughter she gave me a look of concern as she had never seen anything like that and I gently smiled to assure her everything was o.k. It helped put many things in my life into perspective. What truly is important in my life. As that man was in that bed, ill, dying could have easily been me, or you, or my daughter, my wife.. you never know.

So I told myself events will happen. Some people just seem to skate, some fall on their bum and others face the full wrath of what the Terrestrial world can dump on them.

"By the grace of God, go I." I believe is the saying, Meaning it isn't my time to face the trials that that man was facing. My time will come, some time, in some way and I pray I handle it with as much grace as which was displayed by this elderly couple and their son.

Don't be a martyr, don't compare, don't complain, be happy for your sister.

Congratulations on your pregnancy. Sounds like you will make a great mom.

If you holler, do so for all those many woman that can't conceive, that pray they could be you, at that time, in that place to hold that baby.

Best wishes.

What age did you stop using a monitor for your baby/toddler?

Texas girl

My daughter is almost 18 months and I still use a baby monitor. It makes me feel a lot better to have it on, especially at night because her door is closed and I have a floor fan going for white noise. I have no idea when I'll stop using it, but probably not anytime soon. I was just curious how old your LO was when you stopped using one.

Answer
My twin boys are almost 5yrs old and I still have a monitor in their room. I like to hear what's going on in there, especially when they are playing in their room and I'm 2 floors away doing laundry in the basement. My husband and I actually enjoy listening to their conversations after we put them to bed, and if they start playing around too much we can go up there and tell them to get to sleep and we can hear if they get out of bed.

In general regardless of the sex what will I need to prepare for a baby? Roughly how much will it cost for decent supplies, furniture, etc. Thanks tons

Answer
I found this site: http://www.babycenter.com/baby-cost-calculator .... it works.

or this site is helpful too: http://www.investopedia.com/articles/pf/08/budgeting-for-baby.asp

It says:

To get out and about you will most likely want to purchase a stroller, an infant car seat (required by law), a diaper bag, portable play pen and baby carrier. Total: $400 or more

To keep your little prince or princess occupied you may want to consider a portable swing, "bouncy seat," play mat and/or jump seat. Total: $200 or more

To begin, you will want to have a crib and/or bassinet, crib mattress, basic bedding and blankets, changing table, small dresser, rocking chair, monitor and diaper pail. Total: $1,100 or more

You'll spend a good amount of time and money feeding baby in the first year. Main items to purchase are bottles and equipment (nipples, brush), bibs, a highchair, utensils and burp cloths. Total: $200 or more (Note: If you're planning to breastfeed, add $200 for nursing items, such as a breast pump, nursing pillow and milk storage.)

How can I get my eleven month old to sleep at night?

Missy Mage

What can I do to get him to bed earlier? He doesn't have much of a set schedule because of my work schedule. I've tried all sorts of cry it out methods, but he gets so upset that he throws up everywhere! He refuses pacifiers, bottles don't put him to sleep anymore, rocking him doesn't work. And God forbid I lay him down in the crib! He just stands up and starts screaming. I've tried reading to him, he just gets excited and wants to "read" too. I've tried singing, but that upsets him.(Probably because I'm a horrible singer haha) I'm running out of ideas and running on very little sleep! Is there any advice that could help?

Answer
- You can try to keep him up during the day. Far go naps and keep him active. He was bill really tired (as will you).
- Do you have a night time routine? These work well for many moms. Usually a bath before bedtime, a night time story or both.
- How about a favorite toy? Plush? Both my children loves this musical seahorse. I forget the brand. It plays lullabies, and its stomach is easy for baby to start.

As my babies got into tot-hood, like yours they refused sleep. I had a lot of those multi sound and light toys that strap to the crib. I would turn one on to start them out, turn out the lights and run. They would still cry for about 5 minutes, then play with them, then later I would be able to check the monitor one last time before heading to bed.

I used babycenter.com. They have pros and just regular moms answering questions in their forums. I found it helpful. There are also a few other sites.

Alright so my best friend is having a little girl...shes the first of my friends to have a baby, and i want to get her something really nice. I'm willing to spend around 200 dollars on the gift.. id like to get her something practical but something thats still pretty special. Any ideas would be appreciated, my price range is a little flexible but i dont want anything too crazy over my budget!

Answer
I recommend getting her an AngelCare baby monitor that has a sensor pad that goes under the babies crib mattress and is sensitive enough to tell if baby is breathing or not. If it doesn't feel movement for 20 seconds the alarm will sound. My son is over 2 and we still use his every night. It is the most practical and usefull thing that she will ever receive.

What is the best (reasonably priced) baby monitor on the market?

Beff Proni

Are the video monitors worth the cost?... is there a better brand/model?

Answer
i have the Angelcare 401 sound and movement monitor.. i love it! it was about $200 so a little pricey, but i think its come down in price since they brought out the model with the video. i wouldnt waste your money on the video monitors. the movement sensor pads are fantastic so go for one with those, but you dont need the video.

Can someone use a video baby monitor to see inside my apartment?

paparazzi_

I have a video baby monitor that has excellent range, but it got me thinking, couldn't someone buy the same monitor and switch to the same channel and see inside my apartment if they wanted to?

I have the "Summer Infant Day & Night Handheld Color Video Monitor" and I know it can work with an extra camera (if I bought one)... so in theory, couldn't that work for my neighbors too?

Answer
It may be possible my sister discovered she has the same baby monitor as her neighbour. One night she just put my niece to bed went and layed down and went to sleep. She woke up a few hours later by this time is was about 1am and her husband was in bed as well now. When all of a sudden she heard a low man laugh coming from the monitor she woke up her husband half screaming and told him to get the baby. He got up realising something was wrong and ran into the nursery and picked up my niece and bought her into their bedroom. They couldn't find the source of the noise and so the baby was in her room for the rest of the night. Then my brother-in-law was talking to them the next morning and they discovered they have the same baby monitor and they can hear them sometimes too and they freaked out when they first discovered it. I'm guesssing that the video one's though would be different because they have the camera but anything is possible, perhaps you could ring the company and ask them about it.

I have 4 bottle babies I would like to monitor while I am at work to see what they are up to and I have an iMac with the iCam inside. Is there a way to set it up so I can view the puppies from my work computer?

Answer
You can download Orb for Mac here:
http://corp.orb.com/download/Orb20Setup.dmg
which will let you stream just about anything from your computer (including a webcam) to a browser, your phone, gaming console, etc.
As long as your work doesn't block it, you can get to the stream by logging into mycast.orb.com and opening the stream with your work computer's video player, like windows media player on windows.
If it is blocked and you have a capable phone, like an iPhone, BlackBerry, etc. you can watch it there.

How much would it cost to equip a home with deaf technology?

Katie

If you were to add a special smoke detector, door bell lights, vibrating alarm clock, TTY, and other technologies, how much would that cost?

Answer
I am 100% Deaf.. So from experience
A TTY is VERYYYYY out dated, it is hardly used now. We have Video Phones now and the VRS (Video Rely Services) They are provided by the government by agencies such as Sorenson VRS or Purple communication or ZVRS. All require a TV or Computer and a high speed internet hookup. That cost is your own responsibility to provide. (19inch flat screen 299$ best buy, Dell ultrabook 699$ internet ATT 56$ with cell serivce a month)
The alarm clocks very in price depending on what other features you would like it to have. a basic alarm only function can be found between 25-60$ the more fancy one that can attach to lights or smoke detectors and provide multifunction I have found to be about 200$
The door bells are an easy hook-up and can be applied to all lights or certain ones in the house each adapter is about 10$
The smoke detectors can be bought at about 65$ for each room you want one in, or you can have a universal system installed professionally for about 500$
Baby monitors can be attached to the alarm clock as a separate function otherwise I find them hard to use.
For the cell phone, I have VRS on my Iphone and a discount on my bill because I do not need a voice plan. unlimited texting. there is also face-time and other things like skype and google plus. Also with phones there is a nation wide program called Cap-tell (if the Deaf person can and willingly uses voise to communicate) that captions everything on a landlines phone(or cell phone is you have sprint) that the hearing person on the other line is saying
ummm thats about it from what I can think of. Other wise for appointments and class and college stuff like that and for more direct communication I use a ASL (sign language) interpreter.
There are also High power hearing aids, cochlear implants and the BAHA (bone anchored hearing aid) if you want to try and "restore" some hearing, or use residual hearing you may have. but note these methods are case to case and are not always effective and can fail

best economical baby monitor image

I am 5 months pregnant and I am going crazy getting things ready for the baby. The baby was not planned but we are still excited for its arrival. The problem is that I am so stressed out that I don't even know what I need!

My husband made me a list of what I need but it does not seem like much. This is what is on his list:
sippie cups
utensils
plates
formula
diapers
clothes
toys
crib
diaper bag
mobile
monitor
bottles
highchair
safety gates
pacifiers
Am I missing anything?

How much do baby supplies cost all together? I just moved in a new house with my husband about 8 months ago and I am worried I might have trouble getting enough money for the baby.

Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

Answer
sippie cups - not till about 9 mos old
utensils- ? You will need some little spoons after the babies a few months old
Plates- for whom, adults eat from plates
Formula - only if you don't breastfeed, which I highly recommend. It's economical, it's healthier, you lose the weight faster, etc. etc.
Diapers
Clothes- just onesies, jammies and socks are necessities
toys- not many for a newborn, you can pick them up slowly and second hand toys many times have almost no wear
crib-get it second hand from craigslist or classifieds
Diaper bag- any large shoulder bag will do
Mobile - fun to have but definitely not a necessity
Monitor- nice to have but definitely not a necessity (get it second hand)
Bottles- only a couple if you breast feed
Highchair- not until the baby can sit up
Safety gates- not until the baby is mobile at five or six months
Pacifiers- maybe, if baby doesn't suck his/her thumb
Am I missing anything-yes first I'll list necessities then I'll list the things that are just nice to have.
**car seat
*infant tub- if you're not a pro it's difficult to bathe a newborn without one, I like the one that fits in the kitchen sink.
*blankets, about six receiving blankets and at least two regular baby blankets depending on your climate.
*burping cloths or substitute a pkg. of cloth diapers
*you'll need several sets of comfy pajama type clothing, babies dirty they're clothing often so how many changes of clothing you have will decide how often you are washing clothes
*2 sheets for whatever bed the baby sleeps in
*Toiletries such as diaper cream, baby wash/shampoo (I love the lavender one), baby powder, baby lotion

Things that are nice to have
*portable crib/bassinette- I like the one that's an all in one portable crib/bassinette and changing table, You can set it up in your room for when the baby's a new born and everything will be at your fingertips in the middle of the night.
* Carrying sling or pack
* One set of hand covers
* Stroller, possibly one that works with your infant car seat
*waterproof cloth mats, to lay under them so that you don't have to change their sheets as often

I'm sure I can think of other helpful things, I have six children you are more than welcome to email me. Also remember, many very nice things are available second hand at a tremendous savings.
Congratulations!

I want to be able to view threw phone and still have a monitor at home with little or no monthly fees to view online is there such a system?

Answer
You can check Foscam ip/network cameras. It works over wifi (wireless) or with cable to your internet connection router. It costs around 80 dollars I think... Some models have 2 way voice, too... With night vision and everything... You can even change the camera direction remotely from your phone or computer... It's not easy to setup initially (the user manual was horrible when I bought it 6 months ago), but once it's done - no problems... I have 2 of them at home.
