What baby monitors keep working when the power goes out?Do battery Backups help?

Q.

Answer
I found this great video baby monitor that can run on battery backup. So you don't have to worry about the power going out. It's even got built-in night vision so that you can see your baby anytime. The audio is set up so that you don't get any interference from other devices in your home. The BabyView20 from SpyTown.com is probably one of the best baby monitors I've come across.

I hope this helps!

What are the essential baby items?

J.D.

I am making my baby registry and don't know what is essential. I am a single mother so I need things that will make my life as easy as possible, but I don't know if a bottle sterilizer or something like that is a waste of time, and money. Thanks

Answer
Here's a good resource: http://metropolitanmama.net/2009/04/unnecessary-baby-products-a-list-of-things-not-to-register-for/

There are several other lists on the web of unnecessary baby items. Just google it.

You don't need any bottle-related items at all if you can stay home with the baby and breastfeed until the baby is eating solids (6 months). As a single mom, you probably will have to buy bottles so you can give the baby to a caregiver while you work and then you may need more of the accoutrements that go along with bottles. I don't think you need a bottle sterilizer though. Most bottles can be put through the dishwasher, and some can be boiled. You also don't need a bottle warmer, since you can just get the bottle out a little earlier than you need it and let it warm to room temperature, or put it in a bowl of hot water.

You also don't need a designated changing table. Any dresser or countertop that's a good height for you can be outfitted with a nonskid changing pad. Or get several thin change pads (the kind you can just roll up) and use them to change the baby wherever you are; bed, couch, floor, seat of the car, etc. That's probably what you'll end up doing anyway. Just make sure to never take your hand off your baby when you're changing him/her on an elevated surface. That goes for changing tables as much as anything.

Also, you don't need crib bumpers, crib bedding, pillows, or stuffed animals for the crib. The baby should have nothing in the crib except a well-fitting mattress and a fitted mattress sheet. Anything else is a suffocation/SIDS risk. There is a lot of evidence that crib bumpers are not safe for young infants and yet they're still being sold all over, so parents may not be aware of that. To keep baby warm, register for swaddle blankets, receiving blankets to swaddle baby in, or sleepsacks/nightgowns.

A baby tub is nonessential. You can take a bath with your baby, or bathe them in the sink until they are old enough to take baths in the bathtub. However, baby tubs can be a convenient item since they may make bathtime a bit more comfortable or pleasant for the baby or relaxing for you. They sell some bathtubs that look like buckets, usually called Euro baths. These allow the baby to sit up in the water and are said to mimic a womb-like environment for baby. I have never used one, but I have heard them recommended for colic.

If you have a smaller house or apartment, baby monitors are also unnecessary. Or if you have a smartphone, you can get an app that turns your phone into a baby monitor; you just need to have a second phone.

You definitely need some kind of diapers, whether cloth or disposable, and you need a car seat. Actually, you only need a car seat if you are giving birth in a hospital and/or planning to take your child anywhere in a car. Someone who lives in New York might not be required to have a car seat if it is clear that they are walking home from the hospital. Otherwise hospitals require that you have a properly installed car seat before you leave the hospital. If you're having a home birth, your midwife may or may not require that you have a carseat, but of course you need one if you ever want to drive anywhere with your baby or toddler. Anyone who owns a car should own a car seat. I wouldn't register for clothes or baby blankets because you'll get tons of those as gifts. Diapers, clothes/blankets, and a car seat are really all your absolute essentials. You have a lot of freedom from there as to what products you want for convenience.

For convenience, I would consider registering for a wrap, sling, or baby carrier, wipes (these are pretty essential, but you can always get by with wet paper towels), disposable diaper sacks to control odor, towels, bottles, breast pump, breastfeeding pillow like Boppy or My Brest Friend, nipple cream, a high chair, bibs, burp cloths, grooming items like a nasal aspirator, thermometer, nail clippers, etc., stroller, crib, crib mattress, at least two sets of crib sheets, rocker/glider (for you), footstool or ottoman (for breastfeeding comfort), a waterproof mattress protector for your bed if you will nurse the baby in bed or have him/her sleep with you, breast pads, nursing tops, a food mill if you don't already have one (and want to make your own baby food), baby gate (if you have stairs or unsafe areas in your home), outlet plugs, pacifiers, baby or toddler dishes and utensils, and baby shampoo/wash.

I would also highly recommend buying a few books for your child. You'll want to read to him/her and allow him/her to handle books to promote literacy, and kids tend to chew on library books so having a few favorites at home to let your baby handle and munch to his/her heart's content is a good idea.

Bouncers, swings, jumpers, activity mats, and toys are total extras. If you have a colicky baby or one that cries a lot even if you give him/her lots of love and attention, you may want to try these distractors. By the time you have a second kid, they will probably come in handy, and they can be useful as a safe place to put the baby while you shower, etc. so it's not a terrible idea to invest in one or two of these now. But they should be last on your list, since all your baby needs to entertain him/her in the first year is you. YOU are the best, most educational, most developmentally appropriate toy your baby could ever own, so keep that in mind when picking out toys, even books.

36 weeksn nervous about my ob app today?

Stephanie

So I think my preeclampsia is back, and with my first they caught it at 38 weeks, and induced me. What will they do if they catch it at 36 weeks? Should I bring my things to the hospital today just in case?

Answer
I depends on how serious it is. It can be mild, and they will just monitor you. But if it is more serious, they might want to induce for your safety and the baby's health. I'd take your bag just in case - you can always take it home again if you are OK.

Can you keep a savannah monitor in the same cage for its whole life?

Ethan

I want to get a Savannah Monitor as a baby but I was wondering if I built a 9x4x4 Terrarium if it would be comfortable in that as a baby and as a juevinile. Please reply as fast as you guys can because I really need to know!

Answer
Its best to keep it in a cage according to how big it is so its not too far from his hides, food, water at any given time, considering you have a small monitor in an extra large cage. If its too big rather than too small it shouldn't be much of an issue but if its too small, that's not good at all. To answer your question, yes you can keep a savannah monitor in the same cage his whole life given that that cage will be fit for him and is big enough for him considering how big it he will be when fully grown. There are the pros and cons of having a baby monitor in a cage that is big enough to house an adult in but as long as you take care of him and monitor the monitor he will be fine. By he I mean he/she.

Advice on baby monitors?

Sarah

Right now we are using a hand-me-down monitor that we got at our shower. Its a safety 1st and we are completely OVER IT. My son is now 4 months old and I cant take the static or being a human antenna any longer. Its got a constant static and buzzing noise that drives my husband up the wall. I will have the volume down really low and then all of a sudden it will get really loud (it has woken my son up before and he is two rooms away)

So, which ones are good? We were hoping to find a decent one with out dishing out a ton of money, is that possible? Which ones have worked best for you? We greatly appreciate the help :)

Answer
We use the Graco iMonitor Vibe and it works just great for us! It's inexpensive, easy to use and never gives off the slightest bit of static. I never even remember that it's on until she cries in the morning.

I guess my only complaint is that it doesn't hold a charge for very long (probably 20-30 minutes max). The receiver pretty much has to stay on the base, plugged into the wall at all times. This isn't a problem for us, because we only use it at night while we're sleeping, but it might be an issue for somebody in a large house to wanted to use it during the day.

EDIT: Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but a baby monitor was not a waste for us. I am a heavy sleeper (which only gets worse when I'm over-tired) and my daughter's nursery is clear across our house. She could lie screaming for an hour without waking me.

crib movement sensors?

YoungSpark

i've been lookin into those little sensors that is placed under the crib and goes off when the baby doesnt move for about 20 seconds, what i dont understand is, if the baby is sleeping hes not going to move so is it going to be going off all the time when he is sleeping?

Answer
We have the angelcare system and it gives us peace of mind that is for sure! We have had a few false alarms with the system either from my son moving into the top or bottom corner or his crib or his new habit of sleeping sitting up with his face in his lap! lol I guess it doesn't monitor his breathing through his butt surprise surprise! Even with a few false alarms it was the best investment I ever got! I would rather a false alarm where I check on him then the alternative of him not breathing! I would highly suggest getting one especially if you have high anxiety about SIDS! My son is almost 10 months and I still rely on it!

will baby-movement-monitors prevent cot death?

Amiy V

Answer
There are no guarantees . . . but every little bit of extra protection helps and is worth it - especially if you sleep just a little bit better in those early months.

We got the BebeSounds Monitor with the movement sensor pad for our twins - there was one false alarm - but otherwise it has been great.

Best wishes!

two room (dual) monitor?

030809

can anybody recommend a two child room (dual) baby monitor? Regular and video ..

Answer
you can use any monitor, just buy two, set them on the same channel and there you go. It happens in apartments all the time, your baby is sleeping and you hear crying over the monitor and it turns out to be the baby a few doors down, that's why they have different channels.

what's the best type of baby monitor?

penmaster

we're having our first baby and we're not sure of all the listening monitors out there, which one is best?

Answer
From my ConsumerReports.Org subscriptions:

Baby monitors
Baby monitors are an extra set of ears--and, in some cases, eyes--that allow you to keep tabs on your sleeping baby. There are two basic types: audio and video/audio. Both operate within a selected radio frequency band to send sound from the babyâs room to a receiver. Each monitor consists of a transmitter (child unit) and one or more receivers (parent units). Video/audio monitors have a small wall-mounted or tabletop camera to transmit images to a video monitor.

A baby monitorâs challenge is to transmit recognizable sound (and/or images) over a distance with minimal interference--static, buzzing, or irritating noise--from other electronic products and transmitters, including cordless phones that share the same frequency bands, cellular phones, appliances, and even fluorescent lights. Interference can also be hearing someone elseâs conversation, which makes it difficult, if not impossible, to decipher the sounds coming from your monitor. Interference can also mean fuzzy reception in video monitors. Overall, interference is probably the biggest complaint parents have about baby monitors.

SHOPPING SECRETS

Feel free to skip this purchase. Some parents are reassured by the constant surveillance of a babyâs every whimper and movement. Others find it nerve-racking and feel like they have to be hypervigilant. Decide which category youâre in before you go shopping. A monitor isnât a must-have. If you live in a small house or apartment or want a break when your baby is sleeping--which is legitimate--itâs OK not to have one.

Consider your home and lifestyle. You may appreciate a monitor with both sound and lights, so you can âseeâ your babyâs cries. The louder he cries, the more lights light up. If youâll be taking business calls during naptime, for example, it can be helpful to turn the sound down low and rely on the lights. A video monitor can serve the same purpose, though we believe an audio monitor with lights can suffice. Similarly, if you live in a large house, you may want a monitor with two receivers rather than just one. In general, look for monitors with features that make it easy to move about, such as a compact parent unit that clips onto your belt. Try it on before buying, if possible; antennas have been known to poke the wearer.

Factor in your phone. To minimize the possibility of interference, choose a baby monitor that operates on a different frequency band from other wireless products in your home. A 2.4GHz cordless phone and a 2.4GHz monitor can interfere with each other. The 2.4GHz frequency band is widely used for cordless phones.

Consider digital if you have nearby neighbors with babies. If you want to be sure the sounds transmitted by your monitor are heard only by you and not by neighbors who might have a similar model (or a cordless phone using the same frequency band), go with a digital monitor, not an analog one. This will also ensure that the sounds you hear are coming from your baby and not the neighborâs. Analog monitors operate on a particular frequency band, much like a radio, sending signals from monitor to receiver in a straight shot. Digital monitors, on the other hand, encode the signal as it travels between the monitor and the receiver, making it nearly impossible for the sounds to be heard by others, and reduces the possibility of running into interference from other electronic devices. (Learn more about wireless interference.)

Learn the return policy. Before you buy or register for any wireless product, such as a baby monitor, be sure the store will let you return or exchange it, in case you canât get rid of interference problems. If you receive a monitor as a baby shower gift and know where it was purchased, try it before the retailerâs return period (usually 30 days) runs out.

WHATâS AVAILABLE

The major brands of baby monitors, in alphabetical order, are: Evenflo (www.evenflo.com), Fisher-Price (www.fisher-price.com), Graco (www.gracobaby.com), Mobicam (www.getmobi.com), Philips (www.hearmybaby.com), Safety 1st (www.safety1st.com), Sony (www.sony.com), Summer Infant (www.summerinfant.com), The First Years (www.thefirstyears.com), and Unisar BébéSounds (www.bebesounds.com). Prices range from $15 to $200 for audio monitors, $100 to $200 for audio/video monitors. The higher the price, the more features and frills.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Among the models we tested, the digital baby monitors are top-rated. Short of DECT technology, thereâs no guarantee against interference with either digital or analog monitors, although digital monitors are less susceptible and more private. One digital model in particular, the Philips SCD 589, is loaded with features, and since it operates in the fairly lightly used, for now, 1.9GHZ frequency band, itâs unlikely to pick up interference. However, at $200, itâs pricey. (See our full report on this model.)

If you anticipate interference and want to spend less than $200, buy a less-pricey digital model thatâs not in the same frequency band as other wireless products in your home, and consider models with more than two channels. The other digital monitors we tested were very good: The Graco iMonitor ($90) has two parent units; a similar version with one parent unit is available for $60. The Summer Infant Secure Sounds ($50) is a good choice for privacy, though, like the Graco iMonitor, it has fewer frills than the Philips SCD 589. See our full monitor Ratings (available to
subscribers
) for details.

We suggest avoiding the Evenflo WhisperConnect Sensa ($50). It has a Pet Sensor, which is designed to alert you to any unusual movement around your babyâs crib--a cat or other pet climbed in, say. That feature worked well, but you can easily keep pets away from the crib by closing the door to your babyâs room. In addition, we found that one of the three samples we tested had an annoying problem: The âout of rangeâ alarm would go off at random. This happened over and over again with that particular sample, and once or twice with one of the other two samples we tested.

The audio/video monitors we tested have small color screens, and unlike earlier models, reasonably good pictures. However, we found them to be susceptible to interference, particularly from microwave ovens in use. Some models, such as the MobiCam ($190), let you tape to a VCR or watch your monitor on the television set. But overall, we donât see much need for a video baby monitor.

Highest rated one was the Philips Digital SCD 589 for 200$, the next one right after that was the The First Years Digital for 50$.

Severe left side pain (around waistline), lower abdominal pain, gas & horrible constipation, pregnant....?

LaLa

I am 23 weeks pregnant with my first "successful" pregnancy. A few weeks ago I went to the ER because I urinated 5 times in a 16 minute period but they said my urine came back negative for UTI or any infections. Everything has been great my whole pregnancy other than that- no morning sickness, healthy baby, strong heartbeat, healthy growth & weight gain (me & baby).... until a few days ago. I have alot of back problems due to a back injury almost 3 years ago so it's normal for me to have constant back pain. However, (it is Monday night now) Saturday morning, I woke up and felt fine... until about 11am when I started getting stabbing pain in my left side around my waistline and right behind it on the left side of my back. I looked in my books and online and figured it was probably round ligament pain. Around 8pm I finally went to the hospital after the pain got to the point where I just couldnt take it. It hurt to laugh, cough, move, walk, move my legs. My whole lower abdomen hurt right above my pelvic area and all the way up my left side. Then I would get these horrible stabbing pains that would go all the way up my stomach and last about 15-20 seconds. I also feel alot of pressure when I pee. The baby was still active but I was in so much pain that I went to the ER. They sent me to labor and delivery unit where they hooked me up to monitor the baby's heartbeat and to see if I was having contractions. The baby's heartbeat was strong. He was still very active, kicking and swishing around in there. No contractions. They took a urine sample and said I was a little dehydrated, so they ran some fluids thro an IV, did a Vag exam to check my cervix (which also looked great), told me it was probably round ligament pains and sent me home. Since then I have been in tears several times due to immobilizing pain in my lower abdomen and left side when I try to walk (especially if I'm sitting down and then get up). I have a very high pain tolerance (broken bones with no tears, severe back problems for years, severe migraines several times monthly even more often since pregnancy, fell asleep during 3 of my tattoos...... etc) so for me to cry because of physical pain is a sure teller that it is severe.
I am worried because my OB doctor and the ER doctors and the labor & delivery docs/nurses all say I am experiencing round ligament pain.... however this pain is too much and I truly feel like it's something else. This pain has not gone away for almost 3 days and I've been reading that there are other things it could be such as kidney infection, gall stones, restricted bowel, etc. If it was dull achy pains I would believe that it was round ligament pains, but I truly feel that there is another matter at hand.....
Please if you've had similar problems or any information or knowledge you'd like to share, feel free..... I would greatly appreciate it..... Thank you

Answer
It is sciatica. Pregnancy is also a cause of it. There are many reasons of sciatica like pelvic injury, fracture, tumors or piriformis syndrome. Every reason has different treatment plan.
I had the sciatica due to piriformis syndrome. Its a body disorder, not disease. You can remove pains by stretching your muscle. This iPhone app link helped me to remove sciatica.

What would i need and what would it cost?

Kolton McC

Today i was on Facebook and noticed one of my friends is starting to build her own home studio, she just recently started recording her own songs with her guitar teacher and sells them on itunes and so far she bought 600$+ worth of music stuff and it really shows me that if you try you can succeed. Saying that i was wondering how much would it cost to get the basic recording stuff. If i ever did this it would probably be just instrumental, and what would i need?

Answer
If you want to sound truly professional, here is what you need. It's not that expensive ...

1 - Recording software and broadcast quality computer interface -
http://www.guitarcenter.com/Avid-Pro-Tools-LE-Mbox-Mini-3--3rd-Gen--106091184-i1552697.gc

2 - Studio quality headphones - http://www.guitarcenter.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40fs-Precision-Studiophones-100265885-i1126646.gc

3 - High Quality Condenser Microphone - http://www.guitarcenter.com/Rode-Microphones-NT1-A-Condenser-Mic-Bundle-105619399-i1474748.gc

4 - Microphone stand - http://www.guitarcenter.com/DR-Pro-Tripod-Mic-Boom-Stand-101810125-i1170322.gc

5 - Microphone cable - http://www.guitarcenter.com/Monster-Cable-Performer-500-Microphone-Cable-102792009-i1128678.gc

That's all you need to get started. You may also need a good CD burner (software) but, it's not required. Another extra that I highly recommend which will make you sound a lot more professional when you sing, is the BOSS VE-20 Vocal Performer. http://www.guitarcenter.com/Boss-VE-20-Vocal-Effects-Processor-105654529-i1474806.gc

Eventually you may want a high quality studio monitor but for now you can use the headphones.

You will want to learn about Tunecore and Disc Makers and CD Baby web sites and you should probably join the International Songwriter's Association.

How to make a Video baby monitor?

i dont kno

Can someone please tell me how to make a video baby monitor? The only problem is i dont have any fancy gadgets, like an iphone or ipad or ianything! lol.
i have an extra laptop and i have an old webcam. could this work to make a video baby monitor??
i want to be able to connect to it somehow from my laptop that iam currently using, like skyp or something??
Iam very bad with computers lol
I understand what your saying and thats why i dont want to spend any money on this. But if i can figure out a way to do it with stuff i have laying around i would like to see him, and not have to sneak into his room to see him. ( because yes i will be going in to look at him, i have from day one and i dont think that will stop for quiet awhile)

Answer
I can't help you with any of the technical stuff, but I wanted to say that video baby monitors are quite useless. Its one of those baby items that is totally unnecessary.

What's important is that you *hear* your baby wake up and cry for you. Its not important to *see* your baby - after all, you will be very, VERY tired yourself. Its not like you'll be up all night watching your baby sleep.

I am going to be a new father as of August 2014. What is the best high tech baby monitoring video feed I can get?

Matt

Hi all.

I am going to be a new father as of August and we are in the process of putting together a registry. We are obviously going to get some sort of baby monitor but there is a LOT out there. I was wondering if anybody could recommend one that integrates with an iPhone or has a video feed?

Thank you so much for your time!

All my best,
Matt
**Edit**

With all due respect, I am not interested in your personal viewpoints regarding parenting and how to register for gifts. This is a simple product related question. Thank you.
Edit # 2

Wow, I am a little taken back with the amount of cackling this question has brought forward.

I do **NOT** care about your personal viewpoints on parenting, nor, if you think Baby Registries exist. Even I know baby registries exist! And they are called just that.

If you have personal experience into this product inquiry- great I would love to hear from you.
Edit # 3

My wife is a board certified surgeon and we will decide what is in the best medical interest of our child. Thank you.

Answer
Why do you need a high tech monitor? Why, indeed do you really need a monitor at all?

Baby will sleep in your room for the first 6 months or so, so you can easily hear him/her. And unless your house is huge, you will have no trouble hearing baby when s/he cries.

If you feel you must have a a monitor, any inexpensive one will do the job. (And if you are set on a fancy expensive one, you don't register for it. That's not the kind of thing you'd expect friends to buy for you.)

EDIT:
My point is simply that new parents tend to think that they 'need' tons of stuff. And usually, once baby arrives, they learn that much of the stuff they have bought (or been given) is, at worse, useless, and at best, not worth anywhere near what they spent on it.
Babies cry when they need something. You will hear your baby cry. You really DON'T need a monitor to hear it. And for safety sake, (or for ease of breastfeeding) you will want baby to sleep in your room for the first 6 months or so, so you can easily SEE baby and don't need a video link either. They money you plan to spend could really be spent in other ways.

But ok -- Here you go -- 1700 hits for 'baby monitor'
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_0_8?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=baby%20monitor&sprefix=baby+mon%2Caps%2C270

And 500+ for 'baby monitor iphone'
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_kk_2?rh=i%3Aelectronics%2Ck%3Ababy+monitor+iphone&keywords=baby+monitor+iphone&ie=UTF8&qid=1395929206

(But again, it's VERY unlikely that any friend is going to shell out this kind of money, so if you decide you like one of the pricy ones, please just buy it yourself. You'll look very greedy registering for $200+ item. Shower gifts are typically cute outfits and toys.)

EDIT: So far as I'm aware, surgeons don't spend a lot of time studying infant care during their residencies. So how does the fact that she's a surgeon mean she automatically knows that you need a video monitor that integrates with an Iphone?

Fun Baby Shower Games?

having my baby shower for our baby girl, need some unique ideas of games to play, I like the diaper game idea with the candy bars, any others....??

Answer
Baby Shower Games and Activities

Who Can Make The Mommy-To-Be's Baby?
(Materials: Baby Magazines, Scissors, Glue Sticks, Paper)

Divide your guests into groups 3 and give each group 3 baby magaizines (you can get these for free, usually, at local pediatrician offices or even the local hospital). Have them cut out pictures of different baby parts (eyes, ears, hair, smile, body, feet, etc.) and put together a picture of what they think mommy's baby will look like. Have the Mommy-To-Be judge the final results based off of what she thinks the bundle of joy will resemble. Give prizes to the winning team. This is a lot of fun and a really popular (yet not overdone) baby shower game!

Letters to The Baby
As the guests walk to the table (or designated location)where the gifts are being placed.....have a special station set up on the side of the gift table. At this station have cute baby themed stationary laid out with some nice pens. Beside the stationary have a card out asking each guest to take a few moments to write a note to the new baby. When the guests have finished writing their notes, have a tray or basket provided to place them in. Once all the guests have written their notes....the hostess can then choose one or two, at random, to be chosen for a prize (this could be your shower's door prize). When the shower is over these notes can be placed in a scrapbook or album to be enjoyed by the parents now and by the baby years down the road. Sweet and sentimental and sure to be treasured by the new family!!!

How Many Diapers in the Diaper Cake?
If you have chosen to have a diaper cake at the baby shower, play a fun game where guests guess how many diapers are in the cake! Make sure your diaper cake provider tells you how many diapers they used (so you don't have to try and count them all yourself!). Better yet, order your cake from Diaper Cakes by Becca and the amount of diapers will be listed on the "recipe" included along with your diaper cake (and we always try to make it a random, not-easy-to-guess number!)! The guest that gets closest to the actual number wins a prize.

help baby savana monitor?

Pedro

can i keep it warm with just a heat pad. its a 10 gallon tank

Answer
The very simple basics for savs ~

~large custom enclosure (minimum 4x4x2)
~2 feet of diggable substrate (DIRT)
~A basking spot that achieves a surface temp of AT LEAST 130F (aim for 135 or so)

A 10g is not even a good starter enclosure for a sav. Heat pads are useless in a proper set-up. Invest now in the proper enclosure and husbandry equipment rather than having to continually upgrade to finally get to the proper enclosure. Here's a link to some great enclosures that are actually relatively cheap and work great ~

http://www.proexotics.com/FAQ2.html#lizard_monitorhousing

Read through all the lizard FAQs, it's got some great advice. Be aware that most monitor info online is crap. Before using any suggested husbandry read through the entire care sheet or article and see if all of the other info is any good.

EDIT: Posted my response before I read through your other questions. Take the monitor back and get a leopard gecko. You need A LOT more experience before taking on a monitor. Do research and get ahold of local keepers, visit them and observe how to care for a sav properly... Even better, volunteer with a reptile rescue. I work with one and I think that volunteers coming in and learning from hands-on experience is great, it means that I probably won't end up with one of their lizards later on because they know what they are getting into beforehand.

EDIT (AGAIN): VARANID ~ Thanks for catching my mistake on the size thing. ~ooops!!~ Am taking breaks from studying for PSYC and SOC tests by coming to Y!A, feeling a lil fried. :-) Posted a great size enclosure for a beardie, not monitors.

My ackies are doing amazing!! And yes, I'll be dealing with eggs soon. :~) Didn't even think about breeding conditions and dirt temps when answering this question.... Just pictured an enclosure that someone was trying to heat with only a UTH (have actually seen that one more than once in rescues!!). Thanks for your clarifications.

Why is it slow to use net . Is there any problem who can tell me?

Nauman

Answer
You don't really give very much information to help us help you, do you? Nothing about your hardware or your network configuration/method of accessing the internet. Nothing about the speed your ISP says you should get or what speed you are getting.

If you are using a wifi router there are several things you can do to try and maximise speed:

To start with the basic rule is to position the router as high and as centrally as possible in your house.

1] Try changing the broadcast channel from the wireless setup interface for your router/modem.You can normally access this by typing "http://192.168.0.1/" into your browsers search bar and then look for the wireless settings menu.
You don't say if your router can use the 5GHz frequency or just the 2.4GHz. The best channels in the 2.5GHz spectrum are 1,6, 11, or 13 as they have less overlap with the other channels.

There is a useful article here about how to get the best performance by selecting the best channel.: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/21132/chaâ¦

If you have an android smarthphone, or a friend does, then install the Wifi Analyzer app free from android market and use it to scan for the best channel and change your routers broadcast channel accordingly. This app will aslo show you all the wifi signals in range that your neighbours are using, so you can select a different channel to them, making a stronger signal for you. https://market.android.com/details?id=coâ¦

2] You can use a tool like Nirsofts totally free WirelessNet View to look at all the local wireless signals that are within range and may be competing with your own router and interfering with reception. from here: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wireless_neâ¦

3] You can buy a Wi-Fi booster like D-Link 645 Smartbeam, here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/D-Link-DIR-645-Wâ¦
Devices such as these can actually boost the wifi signal by using multiple beams that bounce of the walls and are intelligently directed toward whatever device [smarhphone, laptop, tablet] you are using on wifi.

4] If your using the 2.4GHz frequency and not the 5GHz then other devices that use this frequency band can alsso interfere with your reception [eg baby monitors and microwave ovens use 2.4GHz]. Try and make sure that none of these devices are situated between your router and your wifi receiver eg laptop, tablet, smarthphone etc

Built new desktop, need wireless?

Tigger

Hi guys. I built a new desktop, and now I need internet. I can't use wired connection for reasons. Right now I'm using a TEW-645UB Trendnet adapter. It works but it only picks up a few bars, and it's laggy in game. I'm using my desktop for gaming.
Is there a better adapter out there?

Answer
That Trednet model is a decent High Power Wireless N Adapter with full backwards support for IEEE 802.11b/g, and support for latest IEEE 802.11n Draft standard. It is likely that the position of the router is causing thee problem.

I would certainly try and improve things by repositioning the router [I have suggested several things below] before rushing out to buy a new adapter that may or may not improve your signal.

It would obviously have helped if you had given details on the make and model of the router and whether it supports draft n wifi standard and if it has "Dual Band" support for broadcasting simultaneously on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequency bands.

There are several things you can do do try and boost signal strength; To start with the basic rule is to position the router as high as possible and there are as few walls as possible between it and the PC.

Things you can do to improve signal strength

baby monitor?

dirty4dirt

Any suggestions for a decent one for under 100? The reviews I've read in the $50 range haven't been great but any suggestions would be helpful.
I was looking at just a traditional monitor. I would like to spend under $50. Its hard to go by alot of reviews online because most people live in subdivisions with alot of activity.. I dont. I live in the boonies hah.. so maybe interference wouldnt be as bad..

Answer
I have the Graco Ultra Clear II Monitor with Nightlight. It was about $29 and I've been using it for 10 months with minimal problems. It gets really good reviews considering it's priced so low. Once or twice I have gotten a little static sound from it but it went away quickly and only came from the part I keep downstairs (basically the part that is upstairs with the sleeping baby has never had that problem). I do a lot of product research before I buy and it seems when it comes to non-video monitors even the pricey ones have problems.

Need review for the baby items...?

truecolor

Hi all...I am in my third trimester. I am going to register baby items at Babies r us this weekend. This is my first baby and I am not sure which items and brands should I pick is safe and comfortble for my baby and pricewise reasonable too. Please give me the review about the baby items and items I do need must. Thank you all.
Thank you all ....for sparing your precious time and giving me lots of information in detail. I am new in this country and first time mom. So, not much idea how to choose the right baby items. But your patience and support helped me alot to select the right things for my baby too instead of wasting money. I am going to print out all those information and check out those items in the store. Once again thank you.

Answer
I highly suggest taking a (relatively) new mom with you to register. My sister (who had a 2 year old at the time) went with me to register and she was a HUGE Help.

Here are a few suggestions.

There has been a lot of press recently about car seats so I'm sure you can google which ones are safest. The one that sticks in my head (b/c it's the one we have) is Graco Snug and ride. I would recomend getting a Snap and Go base so that you can turn the carseat into a stoller.

The crib is totally a matter of taste. We chose the Da Vinci Roxanne because I liked that it could transition into a toddler bed and I liked that it had a drawer under it.

If you get a changing table, make sure it has safety straps (so that baby can't roll off it). We choose the Da Vinci Roxanne changing table dresser combo.

Actually.... I still have my list that has prices and brands that I wanted. I can paste it here -- sorry.... it's going to be long.

â Hanging bookshelf (idea to hand shelf 12â to 18â below the ceiling around room to add lots of display and storage space)

Room Accessories
â Crib mobile (electric â the wind up ones stop to fast) Be careful what you pick out b/c all mobiles will not work with Da Vinci crib $40-$50

what router would you recommend if I use my computer and ipad?

909_

looking for a new router...........i use a computer(desktop) and ipad

i also use netflix a lot

Answer
Pretty much any wireless router can serve your needs.

It all depends on the features you need or want on the router.

There are currently two WiFi frequencies, with 2.4 GHz being the most prevalent. Some newer devices also support the 5 GHz band.

There are various backward compatible wireless standards.
802.11b = 11 Mbps
802.11g = 54 Mbps
802.11n = 150 (300) Mbps
802.11ac = varies 500 Mbps+ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802.11ac

If you are just using the WiFi connection for Internet access then the speed is pretty much irrelevant. Internet speed is determined by the ISP and no type of wireless or wired connection can make it faster.

Here is how it works,

A router connects two separate networks and manages the traffic between them.

In most home network applications the router connects your local group of computers and devices known as the LAN with the Internet, commonly called the WAN or Wide Area Network.

Your WAN speed is determined by your ISP and is measured in Mbps (Millions of bits per second).

For example if you pay for a 3 Mbps Internet connection, you will get 3 Mbps.

No router or connection settings will change your 3 Mbps Internet speed. This connection bandwidth is shared by your entire LAN via your router. In a shared setting with several users this can be a big problem.

For example if you have a 3 Mbps Internet connection and one user is utilizing 2.5 Mbps of the bandwidth to stream a Netflix movie that only leaves 0.5 Mbps for all of the rest of the users on the LAN.

The only real way to speed up your Internet connection is to get a faster ISP or speed tier.

As far as range goes,

Wireless signals are affected by many factors including wall density, electrical interference, directional antenna range, etc. 2.4 GHz WiFi connections also experience interference from microwave ovens and cordless phones which interfere with the 2.4 GHz band.

Dual band routers have multiple wireless radios enabling broadcast on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands simultaneously. Using the 5 GHz band cuts down on interference from cordless phones and microwave ovens.. Not all devices can use the 5 GHz frequency. Many laptops and other devices only operate at 2.4 GHz. Thus the need for dual band routers.

Depending on the size of your house and the factors listed above, you may need one or more wireless access points or wireless range extenders to cover all areas adequately.

Just because a particular wireless router works good at one location does not guarantee that it will have similar performance in a different location due to variance in the factors listed above.

You should try to centrally locate your wireless router or gateway up high and away from dense walls and electrical and 2.4 GHz wireless interference such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, baby monitors, etc.

All of that being said,

Wireless routers are fairly inexpensive. http://www.amazon.com/s/?_encoding=UTF8&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957&field-keywords=wireless%20router&url=search-alias%3Daps&sprefix=wireless%20ro%2Caps%2C490&tag=excharge-20

As far as the brand goes, the brand is not as important as the model. Some manufacturers release a good model but the next is crap. I would look at the Amazon reviews of models that interest you. Even if you don't buy from Amazon the reviews will tell you a lot about which models to avoid. Look for at least 15 or more reviews with a 4 star or better rating. Read a few and see if they sound like the particular model will work for your application.

If you are interested I use a dual band Netgear router. http://isp1.us/reviews/netgear-rangemax-wndr3700/

Good Luck...
