A. If you have interference any sort of repeater or amplifier will only repeat and / or amplify the interference (noise) along with the desired transmission (signal). The problem is likely a signal to noise ratio problem and interference.

I presume you have done all you can with repositioning the units to make them closer together without getting closer to the interference. If not try that

With the electronic interference it becomes even more difficult to address. A baby monitor is nothing more than a microphone in the baby's room and a speaker in the monitoring room linked wirelessly. Can you use a wired system? This may be your only practical choice. Perhaps a 5 MHz

A. I was going to buy it but my friend had too many problems with it. She took the baby out of the crib and the alarm didn't go off after 20 seconds. It went off a couple of times with her in the room and the baby breathing normally. Also, she had some major problems with interferance from other baby monitors. Others near to her had the same moniter and she would hear their children crying through the receptor. It's a scary time, but I had just a regualr monitor and my child is still alive. They are just trying to get you to pay more out of fear.

Does anyone know where I could find a double baby monitor?

Q. I need to find a double baby monitor for my sisters new house. She has 2 babies (16 month and 3 month) and needs a double monitor. What I mean is 2 receivers and 2 speakers that all work together so she can put a receiver in each of the babies rooms and 1 speaker upstairs and one downstairs. If anyone knows where I could find one online or in a store that would be great thanks :)

A. As far as I have been able to find, there is no such thing. You can't have two transmitters because they use the same radio frequencies - the signals interfere with each other so you just get static on the receiver. Same thing applies if you try buying two different sets of monitors - one for each baby - because ALL baby monitors share the same narrow range of frequencies due to government regulation of the radio frequencies.

My solution is to have one conventional baby monitor with 2 receivers (for one kid) and one intercom set for the other kid. The intercoms I'm using are a 3-piece set I bought from radio shack. They plug into the wall and will work 2-ways. You set the one in the baby's room to "lock" and turn the other ones on and it works just like a baby monitor. Since the baby monitor is wireless and the intercoms send the signal through the electrical wires of the house, the signals don't interfere with each other.

Can the start of labor ever feel like a kidney stone?

Q. I've had 2 kids and 30 kidney stones, but last time I was checked (a year ago) I had no stones left. It is possible one has formed since then. I am 36 weeks pregnant. I'm having a pain in my side that reminds me of a kidney stone but like I said, last check I had none. Can labor ever start on one side and feel that way? I don't want to go into the ER just for a stone.

A. I had a kidney stone while I was pregnant with my 1st child. I didn't know what it was at the time. I thought I was in labor so I went to the hospital and they told me to go home and wait it out. All they were able to do was to listen to the baby's heartbeat and monitor my contractions. They said my contractions weren't able to be timed so I should come back later. Then a week later the same thing happened again. (I had this happen to me 3 different times before I finally went into labor for real). My dad suffers with stones too and I told him what it felt like and he knew exactly what it was. (It's sad my own dad can tell me I'm not in labor and diagnose my problem when a doctor can't). But anyways, they can't do a CT scan since your pregnant so it's really hard for them to tell if that's what the problem is. Take my advice and call your doctor about it anyways, because it is better for them to know about what's going on than not. If you get to the hospital and they tell you that you aren't in labor then ask them to do an ultrasound; they had to do that with me (even though they still weren't able to find one). But most of the time they will be able to see if there is one in there. Labor can start almost any way it wants to. Some times it is called "back labor", but either way, I would let my doctor know what's going on.

I am 18 weeks with baby number 2 and I felt what I thought was the baby moving around 14 weeks, I still continue to feel little movements but I don't feel them everyday and they still are not very strong. I did not feel my first son move until around 21 weeks. Is this normal because I have been told that you can feel the baby move sooner with the second pregnancy.

A. I am pregnant with our 4th baby. My pregnancy with my daughter was the complete opposite of my sons. Some babies are very active and some not so much. I am 16 weeks along and have started feeling flutters and little movements but they are not strong enough for anyone else to feel them yet. It is normal for every baby to be different in the womb, just like your kids will have different personalities and traits. If you are worried you can always purchase a fetal heart monitor at a BABY store so you can listen to the babies heartbeat and feel reassured. You can also rent them from your doctor or hospital as well. Don't stress and good luck!!

Do you think corded phones are better than cordless phones?

Q. Silly question but I was just wondering what you thought. Cordless phones are annoying. They have horrible quality, receive interference from just about any other device sharing the same network. Plus they need power to operate, so they are useless in a power outage. And there also in some ways a security breach. You can easily listen into a conversation with a baby monitor. And to top it off they lack most features that corded phones offer. So what's your opinion?

A. You clearly haven't used a modern cordless phone. A good digital cordless phone is unlikely to see any interference with much of anything, the link quality is indistinguishable from wired, and no, you cannot hear the call with a baby monitor. That's not to say that those things have not historically been problems, just that they're problems largely solved in pretty much all modern gear.

One good idea is to get a cordless phone system that does not collide with a home network or your microwave. Look for a 5.8GHz digital phone or a DECT (runs around 1.9MHz), rather than a 2.4GHz phone, which uses the same ISM radio band as your microwave, 802.11 network, X-Box 360, Sony PS3, Bluetooth phone, etc.

With that all said, yeah, I have a few wired phones as well as the cordless. Of course, this may also depend on how you get your phone service... if you're using POTS (plain old telephone system) phones, a corded phone is useful in a blackout. If you're on VoIP, FiOS, DSL, or Cable, there's a strong likelihood your network gear in the house goes down anyway, so the cordless phone is unlikely to be an issue.

I'm very happy with my digital 5.8GHz phones... one wired connection for a base station that supports up to eight handsets (I have four), phone to phone intercom system built-in, great range, enough to cover my house (4200ft^2) and the immediate areas outside (if I want to go for a walk in the woods AND talk on the phone, I'll use my cell).

Q. Every night at the same time there is loud interference on our analog baby monitor. Other than this we have no problems with it picking up neighbors etc. Even if we turn the volume all the way down, we can still hear peoples garbled talking as if it were turned all the way up. There are pauses, like it is an actual conversation, but we cannot make out anything specific. It happens on both channels. We tried digital monitors but it was constantly losing signal with its base, causing the alarm to go off, no matter what we did. And that was the expensive one. (We tried two different ones)

A. ...ever seen the movie Paranormal Activity?.... that's probably what's happening if its in the middle of the night. You need to get someone to come to your house who has experience with spirits. A. As I and several others have told you repeatedly - there is no such thing as a tame Nile Monitor.

You're trying to make him tame by putting him through something that is obvious uncomfortable and stressful for him - this is going to lead to a large, aggressive lizard that absolutely HATES everything about you.

You need to stop trying to make him tame and settle for how he is, compared to others he is pretty good but that will change quickly if you persist.

A human-Nile Monitor relationship is one where the human feeds, cleans up after, and gives up an entire room to house the lizard, who in return at best tolerates the human and (usually) does not attack them.

Your persistence in trying to 'tame' this lizard, and your continued ignoring of our answers tell me you are not nearly responsible or mature enough to handle a lizard of this magnitude. I think you should try and find a new home for this little one before it gets any larger and sends you to the hospital.

Q. I want to go work with babies, ONLY babies. I know I have to go through the steps to get there. I'm really looking into working in the new born facility in the hospital. so can somebody tell me what really would be good to get there... people have tired to help but i need a clear answer not no half way answer please.
And what degree should i go for ? Associate's, Bachelor's etc.

A. Doctors typically have less hands-on care with newborn babies, they usually deliver the baby, do the first newborn assessment and any special procedures (circumcision for example) the newborn may need. Nurses on the other hand work extensively with the babies. Personally, I think if all you really want to do is work with newborn babies, become a nurse!

With nursing, there are so many different opportunities to work with babies (OB nurse: fetal monitoring and assisting with delivery; maternity: ongoing care for baby and mother while in the hospital; NICU: newborns needing specialized care; newborn code team: resuscitate babies who aren't doing so great; midwife: masters trained nurses who deliver babies; any sort of newborn clinic; pediatrics, although there are older children as well; and probably much more!)

As you can see, there are many options. Don't think you can just graduate and move right along to your dream job though. Usually, one would work as a maternity nurse for 1-2 years before being trained as an OB nurse or another specialized baby nurse previously listed (every hospital is different though!)

You have two options for your education like you mentioned, associates or bachelors (BSN). More and more hospitals are beginning to require (or at least prefer) bachelor prepared nurses. However, don't think you have to get your bachelor's right off the bat! You can complete a two year (plus pre-requisites) nursing degree at an associate program and then transfer to a "RN to BSN program" once you are done. These BSN programs can last between 1 and 2 years depending on how many credits you take and there are plenty of online schools for that. This route is so much cheaper than doing all four years at a University. It may take longer but will save you thousands (if not tens of thousands) of dollars (I personally saved $77,000 by going this route). As far as bachelor nurses making more, maybe only $0.50-$2 per hour more! And as far as less opportunities for associate nurses, not true (unless the hospital requires a bachelors.) You should research the hospital your interested in to find out if they require a BSN either right now or sometime in the future. Even if they did, you could always go the RN to BSN route.

Associate degree nurses usually have more clinical hours while in school because the focus is less on theory and more about hands-on skills. In fact, an instructor of mine coined her BSN education "Bull Sh*t Nursing." Also, one of the hospitals in my area actually prefers students from my associate degree program compared with the local BSN prepared students (who paid well over $80,000 for their education) simply because of the huge difference in clinical exposure!

Remember, this is simply my experience so please don't assume it's the same for everyone across the board!

Baby monitor with web connection where the in home monitor will work even if my internet goes down?

A. I think you are a bit in the future. Internet connections have to come from somewhere. Do you know how expensive a camera with its own internet connection would be? My home comcast goes down. My cell phone's 3G goes down. Even if you get a dedicated T1 line to your house it can and will still have down time.

Usually holes in the internet services are less then a minute long. While I realize a lot can happen in 1 minute, I doubt your nanny will be wonderful the whole day then magically know the net is down and start beating your kid.

A. Something practical would be nice. Honestly, out of the two options you gave I would go with the latter. I basic monitor works just as well (heck, if she lives in tight quarters, she might not even need one. Believe me, a baby will make sure you can hear it cry). Something like a baby swing would be nice, also. Or a bunch of things she will need like diapers, baby wipes, different baby medicines, etc.

A. Aaaa who love's ya baby?

Your lexus is equipped with an oil life monitor. It takes into account crankcase temperature, moisture in the oil and other stuff and tells you when to change the oil. You should get a message on your display when it's time for a change. Do it within 1000 miles. When you do get the oil changed you must reset the oil life monitor. Check your owners manual for the procedure. Usually the mechanic will do it for you but confirm they do by checking it its set to 100%.

Even if you ignored the maintinance indicator I do not think it would keep your vehicle from starting. I am with others maybe a battery issue.

Give us some more info does it turn over our just clicking when you turn the key?

Edit : if you have not turned it on in 2 months its just a dead battery. Slap a charger on it 2 amps overnight or get it jumped and let it idle for an hour. Then start it up every few days.

Have illicit drug addiction/usage rates increased or decreased over the years?

Q. I am having trouble finding comprehensive statistics regarding drug use that go back a number of years. Any sources of information would be greatly appreciated.

A. The two surveys that cover this are Monitoring the Future and the Household Survey on Drug Abuse. An internet search will turn up various links to them. You will probably not find extensive stats that predate the Internet age.

Before you look for them, you should understand that there are a number of problems with the surveys.

The first is that people are not likely to answer a question honestly when someone asks them if they have recently engaged in criminal activity.

The second is that it depends on what you mean by increased or decreased. Drug use goes through various cycles and use of one drug may go up while another goes down.

The third is the time frame in which you ask. Again, drug use goes in cycles so you can expect to see rises in the use of some drugs for a while, with later falls in the same use. Depending on which years you pick, you would get an entirely different answer.

You should also note that when people attempt to answer this question it is often because they have a political agenda so they will pick whatever numbers suit their political point. If the numbers don't suit their political point, then government officials are prone to just make up numbers to suit them.

If you look at the really long term there is an interesting picture. Prior to 1914, all of these drugs were legal and sold over the counter in the US without restrictions. Kids could buy the drugs as easily as they buy aspirin today and heroin was even included in baby colic remedies. Even under those conditions the rates of addiction were not substantially different than they are today.

Q. I asked this last night but no one had used or knew about this type of monitor. It clips on the baby's diaper and is supposedly more reliable and easier to use than the sensors that go on top of or under the crib mattress. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

A. after my older twin died from SIDS, we had my younger son on a monitor. it was annoyingly loud, and he was always fine, they set it wrong at the hospital.

if your baby isn't at risk for SIDS (newer research links it to a damaging of ear sensors for CO2 at birth, which fits the bill in my son's case) and if you take the precautions, its not worth the money or the worry.
but if your diaper wrapping techniques are tight, and you want to have nightmares involving beeping horribleness, and if you believe your child is at risk for breathing difficulties, by all means use it. you might try punching the name of the product in combination with 'reviews' or consumer feed back into your favorite search engine.

Looking for a video camera with good audio... any suggestions?

Q. I have a piano recital coming up, and I need a suggestion for a fairly cheap camera with good audio recording capabilities, as the last camera we used recorded the sound absolutely horribly ( i assume it was because the camera was made to only capture the human voice's spectrum ).

I just want something that can capture the full span of sound that a piano can emit without hisses or cracking noises- or if there is no such camera, share some ideas for best recording the event (e.g. maybe a suggested external mic or whatever)... I have one month. Thanks :)

A. Camcorder microphones aren't usually professional level, but they aren't bad, either. What they are is poorly located to get audiophile level recording. Way too far away far away from the source of the sound, they'll pick up noise and chatter from close to the camera. If you're filming at the 3-6 foot range, most camcorder audio will work fine. Farther away requires more effort. Bottom line is that proper microphone placement is critical for good recordings.

Depending on the stage setup (if any) at the recital, see if one of the following options is feasible:

1) If the piano is miked into a PA/speaker system, recording the line output of that device onto a CD or other recorder gives some of the clearest possible sound. If you leave your camcorder running continuously during the performance, it's fairly easy to sync the CD audio to your digital video in any of the movie editors and get top notch audio and video. Leave your camcorder running so you only have to sync one spot, not at every scene. Once synced, you can then cut out boring sections of the video. (~$0 expense if they have a CD recording system already in place)

2) If the piano isn't miked, you can use a digital audio recorder. The good ones aren't cheap, but you'll get baby monitor quality sound if you go cheap. Place the recorder in a good location near the piano (test before the recital if at all possible). These small devices are unobtrusive, and can get quality recordings if placed properly. 3) You can buy a camcorder with an external microphone jack and get a wireless mic system or a shotgun mic (think teleaudio to match your telephoto zoom). Unless your existing videocamera has an external mic jack, you'll have to factor in the additional cost of a new camera with a microphone input. External microphone jacks have been removed from the feature list of most consumer camcorders. HD cameras with the external microphone jack tend to be ~ $800-$1000
