How long should a wireless router last?

Q. i have a linksys router and have had it connected for about 3 years but im not sure. We recently moved house and for a while it was fine but eventually connection problems started to occur and each problem was followed by another one. now its got to a state where all devices on the network are kicked off the internet on regular intervals. also the general connection strength drops from time to time. Do I need a new router?

A. Sweatshop Mogul has a great point. Do you (or a close neighbor) use wireless phones (not cell phones, a cordless home phone), or have a baby monitor? Many devices like this operate on the same 2.4ghz frequency and can interfere with wireless signals.

Unfortunately, there is not a great fix for this. There are phones out there that do not interfere with wireless (DECT is something to look for on the box) but you can't make your neighbor buy it if that is your problem. Hope this helps!

how to make cordless home phones work better?
Q. is there a way to make cordless phones work better with less static or longer range?
i have a 5.8 phone, but i need it to work better im not gonan get a new one

A. replace your phones with DECT phones...
only buy pansaonic..

stay away from uniden and vtech...

check your line with a corded phone to ensure that the static is not on the line or jack... and if there is static at the jack, check the NID with the corded phone to determine if the static is inside or outside of your home... if outside call your local telephone provider to make the repairs... if inside and you have wire maintenance then the phone company can come and make the repairs free, otherwise they will charge you - or you can do it yourself, or have someone else do it...

DECT phones operate on 1.9Ghz which is an unlicenced radio spectrum set aside by the FCC for cordless telephone devices only... so other devices should not interfere... also with RF the lower the frequency the further the range, so they will provide better range than 2.4 and 5.8Ghz phones...

2.4Ghz phones operate within the same frequencies as many consumer electronic devices - wifi, cordless intercoms, cordless baby monitors, cordless video security cameras, microwave ovens..... etc..

placement of the main base - that connects to the dial tone, is also important.. you want to locate the main base in a location centered on the area you are attempting to cover with the cordless phone... keep in mind that physical obstructions (doors, floors, etc) can block or reduce the signal level and range of the phones.....

my cordless phone just cut out while talking?
Q. I can no longer talk on the phone outside of the house, and lately the phones will just 'cut out' while talking. Phone doesn't go dead, it just 'cuts out'.

A. where is the question in all of that?

how old is the phone or batteries?
what frequency is the phone, 5.8ghz, 2.4ghz, 900mhz, 1.9ghz (DECT)?
do you have other wireless devices that operate in the same frequency as your phone, wifi, wireless cameras, wireless intercom, baby monitor, etc?

if the batteries are over 2 years old i would replace them...

if your phone is 900 Mhz or has a channel button on it, i would replace the phone...

if you have a 2.4 ghz phone and wifi, i would change the channel that the wifi operates on, or replace the phone with a 5.8ghz or DECT phone..

i would place the main base in a centralized location depending on where you want the cordless phones to reach.. up as high as possible..
