I have a laptop and a desktop computer, both with Windows 8. The desktop computer says I have Internet access, and everything is fine, no problems. The laptop, however, says I have Internet Access, but no Network Access. I see this when I hover over the bar icon in the task bar. It looks similar to this:
[Network Name]
Internet Access
Network
No Internet Access
My laptop is significantly slower because of this. Anyone please help?
Note: Both machines are like brand new, the laptop is from Christmas of 2012 and the desktop was purchased the beginning of this year (2013).
Answer
If you have Internet access on the laptop then you must have network access.
Here is how it works,
A router connects two separate networks and manages the traffic between them.
A typical home router connects your local group of computers and devices known as the LAN with the Internet, commonly called the WAN or Wide Area Network.
There are two types of connections that can be made between your computers and other devices and the wireless router.
1. Ethernet cable connections.
2. WiFi wireless connections.
A Ethernet connection is referred to as a LAN connection and shows the network icon that you referred to.
A WiFi connection is referred to as a WLAN connection and has a different icon that looks like a triangle with five vertical bars. When you have only a WiFi the Ethernet icon will show as no connection.
That being said,
Both WiFi and Ethernet connections give you access to your router and home network. Your router also can share a broadband Internet connection with all of the devices connected to it.
Although WiFi is convenient for mobility, wireless interference can cause it's connection speed and quality to vary wildly.
Wireless signals are affected by many factors including distance, wall density, electrical interference, directional antenna range, etc.
All of these factors will affect your actual wireless range. As wireless connection quality varies the connection speeds are renegotiated. The WLAN connection may start at 150 Mbps and end up at less than 10 Mbps or drop entirely.
For serious gaming or video streaming your best bet is a direct Ethernet connection. Ethernet is unaffected by wireless interference and will give you a rock solid, stable network connection.
For stationary devices I recommend Ethernet connections, however this is impractical for devices such as tablets, iPods, cell phones, etc.
You should try to centrally locate your wireless router or gateway up high and away from dense walls and electrical and 2.4 GHz wireless interference such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, baby monitors, etc.
If you still have a weak wireless signal you can either get a wireless extender or a wireless adapter with better range for your WiFi device.
Wireless adapters come in many types and sizes, you may want a high power USB model with external antennas. http://www.amazon.com/s/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&keywords=high%20power%20wireless%20adapter&linkCode=ur2&qid=1374458138&rh=n%3A13983791%2Ck%3Ahigh%20power%20wireless%20adapter%2Cp_72%3A2661618011&rnid=2941120011&tag=excharge-20
Devices such as wireless extenders can expand your wireless range. The wireless range extender receives weak wireless signals and repeats them to extend the signal range to greater distances. Some models include Ethernet port(s) in addition to the wireless radio.
Here are the two most popular highly rated models on Amazon.
