What kind of jobs do you perform as a nicu nurse? what are the job qualifications?
Q.

A. neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nurse cares for the newborns that need hospitalization. This is a difficult job that requires a great deal of knowledge and empathy. However, if you enjoy working with newborns and new families and want a challenging career in a health field, this may be the job for you. Read on to learn how to pursue this challenging and rewarding career.

Consider getting a Clinical Nurse Specialist degree (a master's in nursing) to help you take better care of your patients. In addition, the CNS degree may make you more marketable. Contact a local hospital's hiring department to find out if they prefer candidates a Clinical Nurse Specialist degree. Visit the website of the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists for more information.

The duties for a neonatal nurse may vary slightly at each hospital, but overall their care tasks are the same. A neonatal nurse is one of the primary caregivers of a baby in the intensive care unit, and often becomes the saving grace to worried parents who have plenty of questions and few answers about their situation. Below are just a few of the tasks on a nurse's daily to-do list when caring for the smallest and sickest of babies.

One of the main duties for a neonatal nurse is the general care of the infant. Babies, even tiny ones or those with physical ailments, need regular changes, feedings and cuddles. Customarily, the NICU will assign each baby "care times" throughout the day and night, usually about 3 or 4 hours apart from each other. At each care time, the nurse will change the baby's diaper, take his temperature, and feed him breast milk or formula. If a baby is receiving any medications, these may also be administered during these times.

Pros of Becoming a Neonatal Nurse
Excellent job growth (projected growth of 22% from 2008-2018)*
High earning potential ($69,000 mean annual salary for registered nurses in May 2011)*
Job advancement potential to advanced practice nursing positions*
Three education options to enter the field (diploma, associate degree or bachelor's degree)*
Cons of Becoming a Neonatal Nurse
State license required*
Job opportunities may be limited based on geographical location*
May require long working hours (up to 12-hour shifts)**
Can be emotionally draining**

NICU nurses can find work in a local hospital, childrens specialty hospital or hospital in a major city that has higher NICU levels. Smaller local hospitals usually stabilize the newborn in a Level 1 or Level 2 nursery and then send more critical babies out to hospitals with higher levels of care. You can even be a part of a hospital transport team that rides in the ground or air ambulance with the babies. These nurses travel to hospitals where preemies are born, stabilize them, give needed medications and/or hook them up to life support equipment and monitor their care during transport to a larger hospital.

i had DNC ON SEp 2,2008 and i wanted to know the cause of miscarriage so the doctor requested for chromosones ?
Q. the doctor says the test says there were 69 chromosones which were extra ...they want to send me for genetic counseling ..future pregnancies will be closely monitored .Is next pregnany a risk ? what should help me to avoid a miscarriage again ...what is genetic counseling can anybody....we are cousins is this a problem/? pls help me

A. I can only tell you what happened with a friend of mine. She had 3 miscarriages (all in the first 6-8 weeks) and one of the things they discovered was that her and her husband were somehow genetically incompatible. How the chromosomes would align is part of what caused the pregnancy to terminate. She had some other health issues as well.

She is now successfully 6 months pregnant with a little girl and having no problems. So this baby has fine genetics, but the doctors didn't do anything to help that. They just assisted with her other hormonal problems.

Best of luck to you, hopefully your doctor can help more. Genetic counseling is just explaining to you what the risk factors are for problems your child might have considering how you and your husband's genetics mix. They'll cover risks for down syndrome and other things to help you decide if you want to have a baby. Because you are cousins there is probably a greater risk for your recessive genes to combine and create problems for your baby. It doesn't mean you can't have a healthy child, they just want you to know all the risks you're up against. Nothing you can do to change your genetics.

Need honest opinions of my baby registries. Would love feedback. :)?
Q. So I'm trying to be conscientious of everyone and their budgets as I register for our first baby. I am currently listed for 2 (Target and Babies R Us) in hope that it makes for more convenient shopping for everyone involved. I'm having 3 showers (his family, my friends since I don't have family in the states, and work). We make more than his family, or mine and I want everyone to feel comfortable making purchases. I also dont want anyone to feel as if Im asking for too much. Its a delicate topic. SO Is this a good amount of product or too much? Is it realistic? Too expensive? If you were a guest coming to one of the showers would you feel as if I were being too greedy?

Thanks so much in advance for your feed back!

Here they are

Editing to add that my parents bought the crib, mattress, dresser and changing table. So that's taken care of. I'd buy it all myself, and don't really care if I have to. I just don't want to limit people. The only thing I might get sooner, rather than waiting is the carseat, since you never really know when you'll need it, and its kind of importaint....
Also failed to mention that I directly report to the owner and CEO of my company and I feel as if they'll get me a larger item for the work shower. So I feel as if I have to have something larger for purchase if that makes sense.
Thanks for your help. Im not really certain what you mean by obsolete as we plan on having more children and will therefore use these items again. Cribs and car seats arent disposable where I live

My registry is a list of items that I would purchase even if no one bought them for me. I dont need gifts. I can buy this all and it wont affect my finances. People would want to stab me, as people really do want to have a village feel in a new baby. Id welcome any gift, and really even a card if that were all they can afford. It is not about the gift, its about celebrating my new baby!

Oh, and thanks for adding all this up for me. Now that I see the total, its not that much. I have friends that have spent that much on baby furniture alone. But I guess this is like the Olympics and youre the Russian judge that low balls and nitpicks, and whos opinion just gets tossed out in the end. Theres always the bitter, jealous, negative-Nelly, and here and now its you

Good Luck.

A. okay this might shock you, but your grand total of things that you think you need for this first baby... is over two thousand dollars. i know cuz i added it up on my calcuator that's a lot of stuff and most of it will be obsolete in about a year. you could actually put a down payment on a house with money like that. i am not trying to be rude or mean in any way, but i do think you are going over board here.
here are a couple of my observations about your list... no offense just observations okay..
the breast pump is private should be purchased by baby's mom and dad
there are great stroller car seat combos for less than what you have the car seat listed for.
the spoons can be purchased at the dollar store
the humidifier should be bought by the parents if the child needs it
what did our grand parents do without a color screen baby monitor?
there are awesome pack and plays out there for under a hundred dollars (mine even came with a dual level mattress position and a changing center.)

p.s. before you get angry and think that i'm against the whole idea of these registries, cuz i'm really not, i just think that when a baby comes everyone usually brings really cool stuff to the showers and with you having three, i doubt very much that your little one is going to be missing out on anything.
