I'm struggling to find a baby monitor that works in our apartment. We've tried 3 kinds and they don't work.?

Q. We always have terrible feedback and pick up other baby monitors, but never our own. I've heard there is a difference in short and long range monitors. Does anyone know anything about this, and if so, are there any monitors you recommend under $40?

A. There are two problems you may be experiencing. The first is your monitor is too low tech and is getting electrical interference or noise from electronics, power lines etc... The second is your monitor may be too "good" and has a large range, which encompasses other parents with monitors on the same frequencies.

Before you buy any monitor, make sure the store will let you return it if there is interference.

First I would try a good "low tech" monitor like the Fisher Price Surround Sound Lights and Sounds Monitor, $27.99 for 1 Receiver. It uses the 49 MHz band, which not many other things use now and could be the least expensive answer to your troubles.

If that doesn't work for you, skip the 900 MHz monitors and try the 2.45 - 2.54 GHz models, there is almost no difference in cost and a much better chance at clear reception. Models to look for are: The First Years True Choice ($40), Graco I-Vibe, Summer Infant Simply Clear Digital Audio Monitor
($49.99)

If these don't work the next level would be monitors with DECT technology. These are "guaranteed to be interference-free, and most clients who have them have had great luck with them. These usually run $80 and up. But I doubt you will need to go this route.

Hope this helps,

Alan

What is the best baby monitor?
Q. I have a Graco and it makes a lot of "white noise", also goes red on random times and doesn't even connect with the baby's room. I am looking for the most reliable monitor- regardless of cost. Any suggestions?

A. I also have the angel care monitor and it works great. I have never had problems with it. I used it with my daughter 4 years ago and now using the monitor part for my son who is 16 months old now. I used it from the time he was born as well. Basically we have used it for 4 years now and it still works great.

What is the general list of things I'm going to need for my baby?
Q. I know a crib and dippers and all the necessities like that. BUT what I really want to know is where you got your things and about how much did you pay roughly?
And how much of each thing am I going to need for lets say the first three months after the baby is born? roughly.
Im only 7 weeks along so I have plenty of time to stock up.

What setting do I set the shoulder straps on an infant car seat to bring home 5 - 7 lb. newborns?
Q. The straps are currently in the middle position. Do I need to put them in the bottom position for the newborns? How old / what weight were your babies when using each of the shoulder strap positions?

It is the Graco Safeseat, and it is twins, so they will be less than 7 pounds each when I bring them home.

A. It really depends on the size of your child - length/height will also impact where the straps go in addition to weight.

My twins were 5 lb 1 oz and 5 lb 4 oz - their seats were on the lowest setting when we took them home (around 3 months, we were at them middle setting, 6 months the highest setting and in rear facing convertible seats just before 8 months). Ask your hospital about a "car-seat test". They did this for our twins, they put them in the seats, adjusted the straps and hooked them to oxygen monitors to make sure that they were safe before releasing them. They make sure that the baby can breathe comfortably at the angle of the car seat.

At the hospital that we delivered at, if our twins did not pass, we could not take them home in the infant carriers and would have to get something called a "Car Bed" to take them home. It was available in the gift shop if we needed it - it is for preemies and babies too small to safely sit in a carrier. Thank goodness both of our little ones passed and were able to come home in their car carriers.

Congrats and best wishes!

ETA - I have seen your questions before and it seems like you are someone who likes to do their research etc . . . just in case - here is a picture of a car bed and a link to more info on the Car Seat Test sometimes called Car Seat Challenge:
