Which is the best source for connecting internet throught computer or laptop?

Q. Wired Or Wireless?

A. Wired [ethernet] will give you the most reliable connection at a consistent speed. Actual speed will depend on the package you have signed up to with your ISP an d what speed your phone line can support [if you have ADSL]. However you obviously cannot move the PC or laptop around much if it is hard wired.

If you choose to connect via wifi [wireless] for portability then although you can move the device around the signal will not be as consistent as other other factors affect the connection speed that do not apply to wired ethernet connections.
Such as: the number of competing wireless signals from neighbours etc that may have their own wireless netowrks. The use of other equipment that utilizes the 2.4GHz frequency range [used by all wireless routers, although some newer draft n devices can also access 5GHz frequency range].
Common things that also use the 2.4GHz frequency are baby monitors and microwave ovens.

Positioning of the router [best to position it as high and centrally as poosible for wifi] also affects wireless signal strength [and therefore internet and network speed].
The more walls and floors between the router sand the device connecting by wifi will also degrade and slow the signal.

Basically, a desktop PC should be always connected by ethernet cable [hard wired] to the router/modem, as it is not portable there is no purpose in using wifi.
With a laptop [which is portable and often used in different rooms or even in the garden] a wifi [wireless] connection is best. You can hard wire it but then you can't move it about and use it in different loctions [whole point of a laptop over a desktop]

For getting the best wifi signal strength and range, go for a router/modem that supports the latest draft n standard [IEEE 802.11n]. These devices can utilize the 5GHZ frequency [which is less cluttered by other signals] as well as the 2.4GHz range used by older wifi standards. Some draft n wireless routers can use both these frequencies at the same time, but they are more expensive than normal draft n routers.
To get the best speed and throughput over wireless you will need to have a wireless adapter that supports the draft n standard as well as a router that supports it. most modern laptops have draft n wifi adapter built in but if yours doesn't you can buy a USB dongle to use instead.

How to increase wifi signal?
Q. So I have a netgear wireless router connecting to my PS3. It gets like a 40-50% signal and wont always connect. How can I increase this signal? I dont really want to buy anything but will getting a cheap antenna for the PS3 do much? Should i aim the router antenna at the playstation? Making a sheet out of aluminium foil and placing it behind the router didnt seem to do much. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A. There are several things you can do; To start with the basic rule is to position the router as high and as centrally as possible in your house.

1] Try changing the broadcast channel from the wireless setup interface for your router/modem.You can normally access this by typing "http://192.168.0.1/" into your browsers search bar and then look for the wireless settings menu.
You don't say if your router can use the 5GHz frequency or just the 2.4GHz. The best channels in the 2.5GHz spectrum are 1,6, 11, or 13 as they have less overlap with the other channels.

There is a useful article here about how to get the best performance by selecting the best channel.: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/21132/cha

If you have an android smarthphone, or a friend does, then install the Wifi Analyzer app free from android market and use it to scan for the best channel and change your routers broadcast channel accordingly. This app will aslo show you all the wifi signals in range that your neighbours are using, so you can select a different channel to them, making a stronger signal for you. https://market.android.com/details?id=co

2] You can use a tool like Nirsofts totally free WirelessNet View to look at all the local wireless signals that are within range and may be competing with your own router and interfering with reception. from here: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wireless_ne

3] You can buy a Wi-Fi booster like D-Link 645 Smartbeam, here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/D-Link-DIR-645-W
Devices such as these can actually boost the wifi signal by using multiple beams that bounce of the walls and are intelligently directed toward whatever device [in your case your PS3] that you are using on wifi.

4] If your using the 2.4GHz frequency and not the 5GHz then other devices that use this frequency band can alsso interfere with your reception [eg baby monitors and microwave ovens use 2.4GHz]. Try and make sure that none of these devices are situated between your router and your wifi receiver eg laptop, tablet, smarthphone etc

What is the frequency transmission of wifi ?
Q.

A. There are two different frequencies. The 2.4GHZ and the more modern less well supported 5GHZ.
All routers and mobiles etc can use the 13/14 channels available on the older 2.4GHZ frequency whilst some newer devices that support IEEE 802.11n specification can also use the 5GHZ frequency. In many built aup areas where there are a lot of wifi enabled computers using the more widely supported 2.4GHZ frequency you can get signal problems, also cross over interference from other wifi devices that use the same frequency range, eg baby monitors.
Some, but not all, of the latest IEEE 802.11n capable routers can use both frequencies simultaneously and as the 5GHZ frequency is less crowded, a better signal can be acheived.
2.4GHZ does have a longer range though.

wifi not working till technician is baffled?
Q. it's ok if i connect it with cabel, but the wifi has a problem.. i called the operator but she said everything is alright.. so i changed the modem, but it still won't work.. so i hired a technician to handle the settings.. it went well at first, but the problem came back.. even my technician is confused.. even the troubleshooter won't work.. what's going on? are there external wave frequencies disturbing my wifi?
